In Lucifer 5x05, Amenadiel gets a message from God that hell no longer requires a warden. Was the deus ex machina plot device used here? Is it literal "god from the machine"?
Talk about your anti-climax, amirite?
I ... will be really shocked if that throwaway little scene was what it looked like. If it is, that was the heaviest-handed deus ex machina I’ve seen employed. I think maybe they wanted us to see it as a deus ex machina ... not unlike the quite literal deus ex machina in the final scene of the (half) season (coincidence, or ...?).
I can’t be the only one wondering about these so-called “messages from God,” right? Because as far as we know (and have been told), these messages aren’t like, Amenadiel was minding his own business when God strolled in and said, “Hey, go bless this lady” or “Nah, Hell’s good, run along.” In fact, we’ve been reminded many times that God’s messages aren’t bullet-pointed lists or direct conversations. Or even strings of emoji texts.
I’m not spoiled for things in 5B, so I don’t have anything to go on other than my suspicions and a solid understanding of storytelling. I suspect that “Hell’s fine, go home” is part of a bigger plot that involves Michael and even, perhaps, Lilith. I’m not saying the writers have never misstepped before, but “By the way, Hell doesn’t need a warden” is pretty huge for a handwave or a retcon. So, frankly, is Lilith’s “death” right after Maze shows up.
When coincidences or conveniences start piling up, all my narrative spidey senses go on high alert. And there are a lot of coincidences. I mean, we’ve got Michael and Lilith popping up at the same time; we’ve got a serial killer whose weird-ass MO involves creepy white lilies happening in the same season where Lilith “Lily Rose” makes a fairly important appearance; we’re literally dealing with an angelic prince of lies ... I don’t think anything should be taken at face value right now.
If I were writing it, I think Michael’s influence and string-pulling and (potential) partnership with Lilith (the lesser brother, the lesser wife) would go way back. Waaay back. I’ve mentioned it before, but Michael means “Who is like God?” and it’s quite possible we’ll find out that some things ascribed to God will not actually have come from him.
Who let Mum out of Hell? Who distracted Azrael long enough for Uriel to take her blade? Was it God that sent Amenadiel to Penelope? Maybe. Was it God who sent Amenadiel to ‘return Lucifer to Hell’? Or was it someone who, perhaps, felt a lot freer to meddle once old “God’s mightiest warrior” wasn’t around to deliver those atomic wedgies?
For that matter, did Lilith send Lucifer an army—or did she ensure an army would be where she expected it to be when she needed it? Is the ring a ring of immortality? Or was that another misdirect? A ring someone never takes off would make an awfully good method of spying, for example. And a promise that keeps demon children from connecting with themselves, others, or the lonely Devil who ‘rules’ them and hardens them into heartless, soulless soldiers would be an awfully devious way to keep that army ready and that Devil dark (and would echo what we already saw Cain do with his devoted ‘army’—so it’s not like the writers haven’t played with this concept before. And hey ... who whispered in Cain’s ear that God preferred Abel, anyway?).
The way the pieces are set up right now, I can even see a couple of little plot points they might borrow or adapt from the comics.
I have no idea, but it’s fun to think about. And I guess if they use none of this, I can write a really kickass fic ;D
Anyway. Long story short: I’ll be REALLY surprised if it was the deus ex machina it looked like.
