one thing that does stick in my head is the time i was a temporary hire at a bookstore, working under the unofficial agreement that if they still liked me once my probationary period was up, they'd hire me on permanently. i started in september and they had me commuting 20 miles a day (no expenses paid, naturally) on three different trains and working insane hours right up till christmas day for minimum wage while repeatedly extending my probation and saying they just needed "a little more time" to decide. and then as soon as the christmas period was over they fired me on the spot

I'm having a bad mental health day but I had to go teach this morning, so I told my students I wasn't feeling well and apologised for not bringing the usual energy into the session. I struggled way harder than I expected and knew I was doing a bad job, and then one of the students went "hey how about we discuss the questions in groups instead and you can take a minute" and then, when I apologised again, assured me I was doing a great job and they appreciated me showing up, and then they organised themselves into groups and had a lively discussion and everyone said "get well soon!" as they left and ??? I may have shed a tear or two

This obsession so many liberals and leftists have with RFK just proves that many of them are not actually paying attention to policy or political positions these candidates have. The left is supposed to be the ones that act more intelligently however moments like this really proves how much in common the left has with the right.

Was Paul Barras attracted to men ?
Warning not a very serious post
Some time ago, I heard Françoise Kermina suggest the hypothesis that Paul Barras might have been attracted to men. She based this on Talleyrand’s memoirs (which are not the most reliable, and whose nature I don’t fully know). Apparently, one day, Talleyrand was surprised to see Barras in tears. A young man named Raymond had disappeared into the Seine and drowned. Since becoming a Director, Barras had "promoted" him politically, reportedly made him his aide-de-camp, and was said to be very fond of him. Françoise Kermina was surprised because it was not Barras' style to cry openly in front of his political colleagues since he was a tough, authoritative man.
Still, I think this is a rather thin basis for such a claim. Not to mention the general rule that even the least admirable figures of the French Revolution had people they genuinely cared for – and vice versa. (Perhaps with the exception of Turreau.) So it’s entirely possible that Barras simply felt sincere friendship, however surprising that may seem. Assuming, of course, that the anecdote is even true.

Also, for what it's worth, I don't actually use the term 'baeddel' like, at all anymore and I don't encourage people saying it. Nowadays I tend to call the kinna person who espouses those beliefs transradfems, and they complain about that just as much, but that at least, imo, gets into a bigger debate about what I believe defines trans radical feminism, which is much easier to articulate and is more objective than a word with a complicated and toxic history going back centuries.
okay since you brought up transradfems: if any transradfems are reading this i think you're very cool and sexy. my DMs are always open.

naming animals at work is such a difficult job 😔 “can you look up people who died of dysentery? he’s so particular looking and looks like he has to be by the sea for his health” “this one is caprisun and the other is kool-aid” “he’s a distinguished little man. let’s name him Frederick” “you’re a white dog so you’re blizzard. oh shit. you actually respond to that” etc etc

there are all sort of self-deprecating people with high standards for their niche activities i encounter on tumblr but the ones who really warn me off learning about their hobby the most are serious Dog People involved in the Dog World (constantly in some kind of hideous agony about their dog's tail being slightly too high in a way no casual observer would find possible to perceive). this is surmounted only by Dog People who also have a hobby of Semi-Serious Photography that they seem to have started while trying to get good at photographing the dog. those people can be miserable about the quality of the photograph and the quality of the dog simultaneously while still never making a single complaint over years that im even remotely capable of comprehending
areas where it seems actively self-defeating for your ability to enjoy the activity if you learn too much information about it

hi maya, just read an article on taylor from the guardian and it was interesting to hear from his perspective of his performance in the current and 2024 seasons. turns out we also got an answer on what taylor wants to do after he retires: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/jun/25/taylor-fritz-wimbledon-tennis-grand-slam
thank you for sending this, it was really interesting!

I just am kind of :/ about the idea that "a poor depiction of [x serious topic] can NEVER be harmful, and NOTHING is inherently better or worse than anything else because ALL art is an EQUAL value of neutral." Because like. Y'all (rightfully) get up in arms about Bury Your Gays. Because that particular story patterns reflects a wider societal issue of queer people being seen as Less Important™ or More Disposable. Obviously you can grasp that sometimes things Come Across Really Badly and it's okay to complain about that.
No, killing off a gay character in a show in a hamfisted and narratively-stupid way isn't the same thing as an actual irl hate crime, that's. Ridiculous. But if, say, a woman hates the way women are portrayed through a shallow, misogynistic lens; or black people hate the way black characters are treated in 90% of mainstream stories; or trans people are tired of seeing so many examples of trans characters being A Punchline; or disabled people see yet another depiction of disabled life as An Unending Torturous Death Sentence That Will Rob Them Of The Ability To Be Happy Forever; or people are tired of graphic violence against marginalized characters that doesn't add anything to the story...they're not Doing Purity Culture for criticizing that? Like. They're allowed to be. Uncomfortable. About that.
#the thing is. looking at how things are portrayed in mainstream fiction can give us a good idea of how society in general feels about#(or POSITIONS itself as feeling about) various topics/issues/types of people.#if people go 'hey this reflects a Negative Societal Trend I would like that to change' then. I feel like that's more than fair???#sometimes works of fiction DO present things like white supremacy or the subjugation of women or eugenics or mistreating#your partner or seeing your children as objects as Good™ things.#granted. people run with this WAAAAAAY too far and refuse to look at things in context. and a lot of 'how this concept is presented'#is VERY subjective. and as always it's possible for something to excel in its handling of one social issue while completely failing in#regard to another. and sometimes something is well-meaning enough that you can make peace with it. but like. please tell me that#you understand the merit of criticizing things that openly espouse and celebrate harmful ideology. because you CAN actually do that in art.#and I'm not like. idk. saying Do Vigilante Justice Over People Who Create Said Art or something. I just want some fucking nuance here.#you ARE allowed to criticize something for depicting a topic poorly. you ARE allowed to evaluate something to decide whether it#fits the 'poorly-depicted' label or not. I promise you can embrace the existence of art that makes you uncomfortable AND criticize shit#we're in this weird place where people need to be Less Critical™/more open-minded AND need to be more willing to point out the#flaws in various works. it's. very strange.#anyway. fiction does not equal reality. but that doesn't mean all fiction is free of flaws or negative complications.

The Autism Allegations
Made a bet with my significant other on whether my ASD evaluation would come out autism positive (the partner's stance) or autism negative (my stance). Evidence for both sides is as follows:
Autism Positive - "Your Entire Existence" - quote from partner - Everyone else thinks I'm autism sus - ADHD test came back as 3/5; some traits but not enough for a clinical diagnosis - Liked trains as child - regularly uses chew toy
Autism Negative - Will the doctors know what they're talking about? - I've never met the medical stereotype fully - And even if I did, those idiots somehow missed me with how obvious everyone says my supposed autism is. - I could just be weird
We staked 30 of our hard earned, american dollars on this bet.
