Random thought of the day of Jiang Cheng being hunted by Wei Wuxian’s memory.

Jiang Cheng definitely saw Wei Wuxian everywhere he went. It had been months since the siege had happened, yet the shock of it had lingered ever since. It was an odd feeling, he had seen the dark cultivator die with his own eyes. He had the bamboo flute that had created an indescribable terror in the cultivation world to prove it. The evidence of said event was right there… Why couldn’t he shake the feeling that Wei Wuxian would come back?

No matter how many times he gazed at the flute, no matter how many times he would get praised for vanquishing the evil Yiling Patriarch, Jiang Cheng still saw the boy he grew up with running through the empty halls of Lotus Pier, his laughter carried on the wind that made his red ribbon flutter with each movement.

Sometimes the quiet and stillness of the night would be too much to bear, and some nights it was better to remain awake. Just like when they were younger, how he would notice Wei Wuxian’s absence because he used to sneak out and the room would fall quiet without the constant shifting in his sleep and soft sleep filled mumbles.

He’d often wake up in a cold sweat, muttering his name before dragging himself in a daze towards the lake in the middle of the night, because he knew Wei Wuxian liked to sneak out and take a midnight swim, especially after his mother found whatever excuse to punish him. But there was no one there. No one swims under the moonlight, disturbing the still waters of the lotus lake. There was no quick yet quiet sound of a certain sword cutting through the humid air, the head disciple of Yunmeng practicing his sword forms over and over, even if everyone in lotus pier knew he didn’t have a need to do it, because he was already extraordinary and a skillful swordsman.

“Jiang Cheng, It’s so hot in here, let’s go for a swim!” He’d hear that excited, cheerful voice next to him, as if time had remained frozen on the good days. If he focused his gaze towards the horizon, he could trick his mind into thinking Wei Wuxian was sitting next to him. “Look, the sky is so full of stars! I bet they look better from the lake, come on, we’ll be back before anyone notices!”

“I hate you… I hate you so much…” the words are gritted out, fingers gripping the dark bamboo flute tight and closer to his chest. The water sloshes quietly, and he hates how quiet it is. He never thought he would hate the silence so much. “I hate you, Wei Wuxian. You took everything from me…” He whispered over and over, hoping to believe those words over the tears silently sliding down his face.

once again, instead of being a bitch on someone else's post, i'll keep my thoughts on my own blog.

i've seen people contrast yunmeng shuangjie by arguing that, while wei wuxian comes across as a rebel and jiang cheng comes across as highly mindful of social norms, in reality their social abilities are the opposite: that, in reality, it is wei wuxian who is socially apt and jiang cheng who is socially incapable.

for some fans, this then translates into political ability. these fans argue that it is wei wuxian and not jiang cheng who is capable of making connections.

come on now. this makes no sense. in fact, i'd go as far as to say that the story of MDZS as it is written is only possible if jiang cheng is actually better at making long-term connections - political connections - than wei wuxian.

certainly, wei wuxian is more personable and fun to interact with than jiang cheng; certainly, if everyone was a kid on a school playground, then most of the other kids would probably prefer to play with wei wuxian over jiang cheng. and yet, the world of MDZS is a bit more complicated than a school playground. wei wuxian might be more friendly and social than jiang cheng, but in no way does this translate to actual political ability.

it is true that wei wuxian most likely made a large number of friends at the cloud recesses lectures (such as one nie huaisang), before he was expelled for punching jin zixuan. one might then want to call these friendships future political connections. based on this, one might then expect that, after leaving yunmeng jiang to protect the wen remnants, wei wuxian would have some connections to cash in on.

and yet, this did not happen. where were these supposed "connections" when wei wuxian left yunmeng jiang to defend the wen remnants? where were these "connections" when wei wuxian was living in the burial mounds with no one but a bunch of escaped POWs, all for the sake of what was just? and where were these supposed "connections" when the entire cultivation world showed up on wei wuxian's doorstep, calling for his head?

the whole point of the first chronological half of the story is that wei wuxian stood alone. when wei wuxian chose to do what was right over what was easy, he stood alone. when wei wuxian chose to protect the innocent, he did so alone. and when wei wuxian refused to give up on the wen remnants, severing his single strongest political tie in the process - he ended up standing alone against the rest of the cultivation world. no one came to save him. no one even came to stand by him. none of the connections he made before his downfall as the yiling patriarch - save for one, which only stepped up after he died once - actually ended up lasting.

therefore, one can only conclude that, for all his friendliness and inherent likability, wei wuxian actually isn't all that great at forming and maintaining useful political connections. no matter how much people might like him at first, for almost everyone, he's ultimately too politically inconvenient to stand up for.

(funnily enough, the fact that almost all of wei wuxian's connections save a handful were fair-weather friends is highlighted by wei wuxian himself, in the following exchange during the second siege:

One of the cultivators standing at the forefront of the formation said, with bitter grief, “Wei Ying, you truly disappoint me. To think I used to admire and look up to you! I even said that, if nothing else, you were a founder, someone who established the first generation of your own sect. It’s almost nauseating, in retrospect. From now on, you and I stand in opposition!” Wei Wuxian was taken aback by this speech at first but then burst into hysterical laughter. “Ha ha ha ha….” He laughed so hard he could barely breathe. “You admired me? You say that, but why did I never see you, back when you admired me? And when everyone began to bay for my blood, you popped up waving your little flag to cheer in support!”

meanwhile, the plot of MDZS is fully impossible if jiang cheng is bad at making political connections. first, consider what happened right after the massacre of lotus pier: the golden core transfer happened, wei wuxian was thrown into the burial mounds, and then three months later jiang cheng and lan wangji found him again. by that point, jiang cheng had already called enough new disciples to his banner that yunmeng jiang was considered a contributor to the sunshot campaign. given that jiang cheng had literally no one by his side after the fall of lotus pier save jiang yanli, it is highly unlikely that jiang cheng would have been able to recruit this many new disciples if he had no interpersonal skills.

(one could potentially make the case that jiang yanli recruited the new disciples, but i find this difficult to believe. people in this time period would assess the strength of a political organization - one asking them to do something as dangerous as go to war for them - by the quality of that organization's leader. not by the quality of the leader's sister who would have inevitably married out of the organization. sucks to suck but that was how things worked back then.)

furthermore, jiang cheng rebuilt lotus pier. jiang cheng rebuilt lotus pier from literally nothing. some jc antis like to argue that wei wuxian contributed more to the rebuilding of lotus pier than jiang cheng, but this is absurd: wei wuxian was only around during the postwar period for 1-2 years at most before he left for the wen remnants, and a few years after that he was dead. after wei wuxian's defection, and then in the 13-year time period between wei wuxian's death and his resurrection, who was left in lotus pier? was in charge of lotus pier? who was running lotus pier so efficiently that, by the time of wei wuxian's resurrection, yunmeng jiang had gone from what wang lingjiao called a joke to one of the strongest sects in the jianghu?

of course - none other than jiang cheng.

this level of political rebuilding, for an organization that was literally decimated less than 20 years ago, is only possible if the leader of said organization is highly politically capable. during the 13 year timeskip, jiang cheng as yunmeng jiang's leader would have had to deal with rival sect leaders, make alliances with other sects, strike deals with other sects, and keep a constant awareness of the political landscape. all of this is only possible if jiang cheng is capable of making useful political connections. frankly, i think fans are putting too much emphasis on jiang cheng's surface-level mannerisms (which he also is only showing because wei wuxian is around, lbr), and too little focus on simple logic. if jiang cheng did not have the ability to make political connections, then yunmeng jiang would have collapsed.

it's easy to read MDZS and conclude, based on a surface-level analysis, that wei wuxian is better at making connections than jiang cheng. yet this take is at best shallow and at worst actively misses all the main points of the novel. for all his charisma, sociability, and wittiness, wei wuxian is actually not that socially apt - if he were, he and the wen remnants would not have died. and - for all of his snappishness, grumpiness, and irritability - jiang cheng is actually not a social klutz - if he were, yunmeng jiang would not have survived to see wei wuxian's resurrection.

the socially-apt underdog you're thinking of is jin guangyao.

(also, as an aside: nie huaisang did not mastermind wei wuxian's resurrection because he was, secretly all along, wei wuxian's ~great friend~ who was just so sad and disappointed about what happened to poor wei-xiong. it's a nice bit of fanon, but that's not what happened. nie huaisang masterminded wei wuxian's resurrection - 13 years after wei wuxian's death, i might add - because of wei wuxian's expertise. he needed someone with wei wuxian's specific expertise to both solve the nie mingjue dismembered corpse problem and to get revenge for him on jin guangyao. i don't know where bleeding heart huaisang came from, but it certainly wasn't canon.)

i think a lot of mdzs fans, especially those of the novel canon, would benefit from revisiting the source material to re-familiarize themselves with just how terrifyingly powerful, and unpredictable, and dangerous wei wuxian actually was, both during the sunshot campaign and leading up to the first burial mounds siege. he was not just some rule-breaking scamp starting a farming co-op with some little guys in the burial mounds. lots of people were frightened of him and his power, and with very good reason.

Yunmeng Jiang did not lose its main Sect home nor was it pillaged like the Lan library had been.

At Jiang Cheng's disposal was personally being Wei Wuxian's clan leader. They had built up Lotus Pier to what it had been months after the war due to disciples flocking to them. Lan Wangji according to cultivation standards is just a gusulan disciple, he is not in the run for holding a position as leader just as Jiang Yanli did not being a woman. He was the one to stand up with the smaller people (Mianmian) to say slandering Wei Wuxian was a lie and he was not a danger unless provoked. He was ignored even by his own brother who had gone with the crowd and coming to the assumptions that Wei Wuxian was indeed trying to cause a rift and trying to make a power claim.

The one to provoke was Jiang Cheng, who had no need to call Wei Wuxian an enemy to the four clans after going to the Burial Mounds. He is the one who was made to go to see for themselves, and solidified that Wei Wuxian was doing as Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao suspected.

I will also posit, Lan Wangji had little aid to give as well by that point, he had lied about being on a nighthunt to tell Wei Wuxian of Jiang Yanli's wedding. He also goes just as Jiang Cheng did to "really see" what was going on. Their visits are the polar opposite in reactions. Jiang Cheng exasperated a dire situation where as Lan Wangji tried to at least listen and hear what Wei Wuxian had to say himself and aided the awakening of Wen Ning. The actual listening is what Wei Wuxian wants in his life and to be able to solidly have that which he was never given in his first life.

There is a lot put upon by many that Wei Wuxian should have accepted aid, yet he as a character at that point will not because he is already labeled as a danger. Any help he would accept would have been seen as some sort of ploy by him and yet another blot on ruining the foundation of safety the sects kept preaching about. However late it was, Lan Wangji did decide to take a stand, why else would he have been there when the clans secretly went on to attack Wei Wuxian behind his back? Lan Xichen was just as shocked to have seen Lan Wangji there and fleeing to protect Wei Wuxian from the whole of cultivation society. His stand by Wei Wuxian's side at that point, and after in his second more grounded in this belief, is the point of Lan Wangji's arc. He has matured enough to not let his heart be swayed by the distrust of others in Wei Wuxian because he has learned to trust in his own morals that are like Wei Wuxian's.

I still have a lot of love in my heart for the adaptations of MDZS, but the book is just...undeniably better.

Especially when it comes to the depiction of the main couple. Of course, this can largely be attributed to censorship, but even still, I feel like the adaptations have a great misunderstanding of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji in general. Or at least CQL does. I have not watched the animation in years, meanwhile I recently binged both the live action and the book.

Lan Wangji is...deeply in love and deeply devoted to Wei Wuxian. I often see him depicted in the fandom as a stickler for the rules, someone who tries to force them onto Wei Wuxian at every turn. This might have been who he was when he was a teenager, but adult Lan Wangji - who knows what sticking to those rules so strictly leads to - is not like that. Like. At all.

For all he pretends to stick to the rules - telling Wei Wuxian not to speak while eating, no alcohol, no excessive noise, etc - he doesn't actually give two shits if Wei Wuxian sticks to them or not. It is more force of habit than anything.

He doesn't even care too much about following them himself anymore. In fact, he happily breaks them time and time again. The only thing that Lan Wangji cares about after he finally has the love of his life back is that that same love is happy.

I think this excerpt from the Chapter 116 Banquet Extra perfectly exhibits Lan Wangji's stance on the Lan rules.

(side note; it is unbearably sweet that he went out of his way to make sure his husband didn't have to eat food he didn't like, and also went out and got him something that would satisfy his hunger. He loves him so much).

He would do anything to make him happy. Anything.

I feel like the CQL really fails to express that. Changing the events of the Nightless City and taking away the first Burial Mound Siege causes a lot of problems in the MDZS story telling (maybe more on that in another post because it pisses me off) but I think maybe one of the biggest things it impacts is showing to us Lan Wangji's devotion.

While it is true that he was conflicted, emotionally constipated, and still tied down by the rules he was taught to obey for his entire life during the events pre 13 year time skip, he was still deeply in love with him and he has pretty much always stood by his side.

He spoke up for him, defended him where he could when no one else but Mianmian would (also maybe more on her). And when push came to shove, when it was him against the entire world, he made the active and violent (not said in a negative way) decision to defend him with everything he had.

He hid him away from pursuers for days, desperately trying to nurse him back to health even while he himself was also injured and exhausted. He even chose to hurt his own people in defense of him when it came down to it.

I think the Nightless City, while not his turning point, was what truly cemented it for him. It doesn't matter who it is, it doesn't matter what rules, Lan Wangji will always, always go against them for Wei Wuxian.

I've been thinking about the fandom's attitude toward trauma, and I find it deeply problematic. I'm going to ramble a bit about it.

Here's the thing, either people completely dismiss the element of trauma in the story, or they turn it into a free-pass that can excuse any future shitty behavior from the character.

Specifically, when it comes to Wei Wuxian, I see that his childhood trauma from losing his parents and being left to beg on the streets, and from being made a scapegoat by Yu Ziyuan - who was extremely abusive towards him, both physically and emotionally - to the war, the trauma of being thrown into the burial mounds, and everything that happened from the moment he created the ghost path of cultivation until the first siege of the burial mounds and his death, can all be minimized or all together dismissed by certain parts of the fandom when analyzing his actions in the first life. That's part of why I hate takes that portray Wei Wuxian as oblivious to Lan Wangji's feelings or too emotionally unintelligent to understand the romance, when, actually, there was a ton of shit going on in his life and he absolutely had no energy left to think about romance, of all things. The trauma also becomes progressively more relevant when we look at Wei Wuxian's actions towards the end of his first life - because traumatic experiences kept piling up - and when we get to the battle of Nightless City and later the first siege of the Burial Mounds, it's basically impossible to separate Wei Wuxian's actions and reactions from the trauma he'd endured up until that point.

On the other hand, the certain parts of the fandom really emphasize Jiang Cheng's trauma way beyond the point where it would be relevant to do so.

Yes, Jiang Cheng had an awful childhood because his mother was abusive towards everyone around her. And I can excuse his poor temper when he was a child based on that.

And it's true that losing his parents and sect was traumatic. However, the problem is that in Jiang Cheng's case, his trauma has frequently been used to justify and, in fact, to excuse, all the atrocities he went on to commit in his adult life.

Wei Wuxian, despite his trauma, never became the abuser. In every instance where he used violence, it was either during the war, or he was provoked first. He never took the initiative to be violent or to hurt others otherwise.

Jiang Cheng was completely different. He lashed out because of jealousy and a desire to satisfy his own ego, he betrayed Wei Wuxian and the Wen Siblings, knowing that he owed them his life. And yet, his stans will insist that his past trauma is enough to excuse this behavior. I'm not going to go into how Jiang Cheng's actions were entirely voluntary in this post. Suffice to say that the book makes it quite clear that he turned against Wei Wuxian not because Wei Wuxian's prominence hurt his ego, and the other sect leaders exploited that. But the Jiang sect wouldn't have been in danger had Jiang Cheng chosen not to turn against Wei Wuxian.

I suppose my point is that at some point, trauma can no longer excuse bad behavior. And in this case, when a sane adult chooses to commit genocide, that choice cannot be excused by anything, not even by a traumatic past. When his stans say that he was a victim, they forget about his victims. Sometimes, a victim goes on to become the perpetrator.

In the novel, several characters have extremely traumatic pasts. Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao. Most characters, really.

MXTX draws very clear parallels between Wei Wuxian and several of those characters. Wei Wuxian and Jin Guangyao both have a lower background in a world that bases a person's value on their birth. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian both lived with Yu Ziyuan for several years, they both watched Lotus Pier fall, they both lost Jiang Yanli. Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang both came from a lower social background, they were both street kids at one point, they were both victims of societal injustice.

And yet, Wei Wuxian chose to break the cycle of abuse. No matter how much abuse he endured, how traumatic his past, he didn't go on to become the next monster, the next abuser. On the contrary, he actively chose to be kind and just and nurturing. He was only ever violent when he was forced to be so - when he had to defend himself or others. Even in Nightless City, after he'd just lost Wen Ning and Wen Qing, he wasn't the first to attack.

On the other hand, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao, Xue Yang, and many others chose to continue the cycle of violence and abuse. And at some point, the trauma in their pasts can no longer excuse their later choices. Those three characters, for instance - I know there are others but I'm not going to list every single MDZS character with a traumatic past who went on to become shitty people themselves, otherwise I'd be here all day - ruined many lives themselves, often those of people who were completely unrelated to their own traumatic pasts.

And if their actions are excused because of trauma, then what about their victims? What about the Wen remnants, who were old, disabled people, and a toddler, all innocent of Wen Rouhan's crimes? What about the people Jiang Cheng captured and murdered under the suspicion of the being demonic cultivators, on the off chance of them being Wei Wuxian? And the book doesn't even confirm that those people were actually demonic cultivators, they were taken because they were suspected of being such. And nowhere in the book does it say that any of those people did anything wrong at all. And what about Qin Su and her child? What about the entire clan Jin Guangyao framed for murdering his son and exterminated under such an excuse? What about the people of Yi city? What about Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan and a-Qing? What about the nameless, innocent victims who didn't get justice?

A traumatic past can never excuse the trail of victims they left behind.

Here’s a response from @randomness-is-my-order about that because it was much easier to find than the one I made years ago and 100% matches what I said. If not for Wei Wuxian protecting the Wen remnants, we’d be missing a whole ass character cause—contrary to fanfics—Lan Wangji is not the initial person who rescued and adopts Wen Yuan. If not for Wei Wuxian protecting the Wen remnants, the rest of the cultivation world would be dead because of the second siege. When Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning have their first convo post-resurrection, they literally talk about the Burial Mounds settlement, and at some point Wei Wuxian mentions how they built a memorial for Wen Qing and Wen Ning after their “executions.” When wangxian and Wen Ning go to the Burial Mounds to rescue the juniors, they get emotional at the remains of their former homed burned to the ground and its inhabitants long dead. How is this not a reaction?

I don’t understand what relationships are meant to be changed by the deaths of the Wen remnants that were not already irreparably broken, but their deaths absolutely have ramifications for future relationships and interactions. Wei Wuxian severed all ties and affections with his childhood friend, he neither respects nor cares about getting close to his cultivation peers, and his involvement in the plot is a complete fluke because his original goal after resurrecting was to permanently leave the cultivation world. How is none of this considered relationship-affecting?

I've come across many posts being like, why is JC held more accountable than likes of JGS, NMJ and LQR when it comes to first siege of burial mound

well first off, everybody knows JGS was the main instigator, theres like very little debate about that, but for the rest;

its because he's the one who owes WN a life debt, he's the one who visits BM's sees the weak and elderly and declares WWX an enemy to the sects the next day when they agreed on defection, he's also the one who provides the most resources for the siege and is the one that leads it.

and yet theres so much defending people do for him, thats why theres so many posts pointing out that no hes not 'avenging his sister' [she died saving WWX before his very eyes, if anything its an insult to her final actions], that he's not justified in any sense for leading a siege on WWX which would directly result in Wen Remnants death

if i had been in jiang cheng's position immediately after the fall of lotus pier, i probably would not have tried to strangle wei wuxian.

i don't like dealing with negative emotions, so instead i'd probably say some bullshit like "whaaat? no, it's not your fault and i don't blame you at all, so don't worry about it," and then just put all my energy towards trying to survive. except i would blame wei wuxian. i would very much blame him, from the depths of my soul. even if i tried my hardest to convince myself not to blame him, that i should not blame him, that i do not want to blame him - nonetheless, my subconscious would remain convinced that, were it not for him, my family and everyone i grew up with would still be alive.

i would not save wei wuxian from that wen patrol. even if i did love that deeply, my resentment would still blunt my reaction time and i would not be able to act in time. for the sake of convenience, let's say that wen ning rescues wei wuxian from lotus pier anyways. wei wuxian lives. what happens then? on one hand, i still resent him for causing the deaths of all my family; on the other hand, though, now i also feel guilty for allowing him to be captured and tortured simply because i would not die in his place. how do i deal with these complicated emotions - these unsightly, ugly emotions? i don't. i bury them and pretend they don't exist, because running away from difficult feelings is how i've always lived my life - i run away from him, because whenever i see him, this twinned of resentment and guilt rear their ugly heads again.

thus, because of my emotional unavailability, the relationship tanks. maybe wei wuxian gets his core melted, somehow picks up demonic cultivation anyways, and is thus pulling away from me as well; maybe the avoidance comes from both ends. and if wei wuxian instead notices that something is wrong and starts pestering me about what's wrong - well, i have full faith in my ability to deflect. i am long-practiced in diverting the focus of a conversation specifically to imply that the other party's concern isn't welcome.

thus, by the time the sunshot campaign ends, our relationship would have severely deteriorated. and then, because of this, i would take wei wuxian leaving our sect to protect the wen remnants as the actual end of our bond. unlike jiang cheng, i would not even argue against wei wuxian's leaving, nor say things as sentimental as "if you insist on protecting them, then i cannot protect you" - instead, i'd simply write off our relationship as doomed and sever it peacefully.

after all, he owes me nothing. i am entitled to neither his labor nor his presence. if he wishes to leave, then he is free to go; if he wishes to no longer be family, the i will no longer think of him as so. in fact, the less familiarly i think of him, the better: it is at once much easier and much more comfortable for me to believe, in a post-hoc sense, that someone who has left me actually never wanted to be with me to begin with, and i therefore have not lost anything of value at all. and this loss would not hurt me as much as it hurt jiang cheng in canon. after all, i, unlike jiang cheng, am a veteran at avoiding all thought on topics that distress me; instead, i'd soon find something new and exciting with which to distract myself.

i would not visit wei wuxian in the burial mounds. if jiang yanli insisted on seeing him, perhaps i would accompany her there, but i would not make any conversation with him myself beyond what is absolutely necessary. i would consider the death of jin zixuan unforgivable. i would consider the death of jiang yanli unforgivable. but perhaps i would not feel as wretchedly betrayed as jiang cheng does in canon: after all, i in this scenario, unlike jiang cheng, have already given up on wei wuxian a long time ago.

i would probably lead the first siege of the burial mounds. i would not hold the same level of animosity against the wens as jiang cheng does in canon - in general, while i can hold onto subconscious resentment for a long time, actively clinging onto seething hatred for extended periods of time is difficult for me. perhaps i'd even speak up more for the wen remnants, out of purely some abstract moral concern for the wellbeing of POWs; however, i'd stand down the moment any of said speech put my own people in danger. perhaps i'd lead the first siege of the burial mounds because it is expected of me. or perhaps i'd genuinely want the man who hurt my sister to die.

either way, if i then encountered wei wuxian in the burial mounds battlefield, i would actually kill him. it would be easy for me to do so.
