CG and Execution Thumbnails

I recently got my hands on the V3 art book and I am absolutely obsessed with it!! I wanted to share some of my favourite (mostly subtle) differences between CG/Execution thumbnails and their final iterations.

In this death road of despair cg, Miu was originally supposed to be in the same slice as Kokichi and Gonta, and a tenth unknown person in the top left corner.

Angie seems much more defeated in the original sketch for the other death road of despair cg, with her head drooping rather than praying.

I just find Shuichi's grimace in the sketch of the first training cg Very funny compared to the final one (which is much more dignified).

Shuichi and Kaito's shocked expressions in the original sketch for the cg with Maki joining in training are delightful to me, I wish they kept them.

Maki originally was reaching out to Kaito in the trial 4 cg where his illness is revealed, as opposed to her straight posture in the final cg. Shuichi's expression in the thumbnail is also very funny to me.

The stupid little nose they gave kiibo in the sketch of the cg where he's lying flat in the hydraulic press made me giggle.

Maki's expression was much more intense in the original sketch for her pointing the crossbow at Kokichi in this cg.

Himiko's >_< face made me smile in the cg of everyone (minus Kiibo) training together after trial 5.

THIS thumbnail from trial 6 is especially interesting to me. I wonder if the thumbnail was made before the trial character placements were decided at all, so this portrait and figure are random. Or maybe this was done later on when it was partially decided, and a survivor was initially next to Tsumugi, before they were moved later. It's kind of hard to tell because of the, uh, lack of detail in this one. But I'm very curious.

In the dark belt bonus scene in chapter four, originally Himiko, Shuichi, and Gonta were in their normal outfits! Also, Gonta's expression is MUCH different. I'm glad we got that cute little smile in the end, its such an iconic Gonta CG and probably one of my favourites because of it.

Initially, the end of Kaede's Execution had everyone sitting as members of the audience. Its much less intense then the final result, so I think this was a good change.

Originally, there was no death fake out for the v3 survivors! Kiibo just let them be and proceeded to blow up the school.

BONUS:

Nothing different here as far as I can tell, I just LOVE how detailed the storyboards are for Kaito's execution. This is just one example. Its so, so pretty looking

Stories about men who come from nowhere. John Silver in Black Sails who refuses to disclose his past and is reborn through the crew of the Walrus, through his relationship with Flint and later through his relationship with Madi. A man who is defined primarily by those around him, casting him into different roles.

Sentain and Galoup of Beau Travail who have no backstories at all. Sentain because he came from nowhere and belongs to no one, and Galoup because the action of the story is his back story. Much like Silver, he is defined by the narrative taking shape around him. Unlike Silver, the military gives him a clear sense of self that is unsettled by Sentain.

And somewhere nearby conceptually is Don Draper of Mad Men, who sees the opportunity to divorce himself from his own narrative and start over, only to discover himself still entrapped by his own life. He wants to be a man who comes from nowhere with no backstory, and yet his past never lets him go. And he discovers as time goes on that he makes a new past which is always piling up behind him. He cannot avoid becoming entangled in his own narrative. Until the very end, where he makes another attempt to exit the story and become a new person again.

I guess the thread that ties these men together is their inability to stay out of the story no matter how hard they try. They are men trying to fly under the radar, averse to exceptionalism and attention except in so much as these things are useful, and yet the narrative shines a light on them. They are press ganged into action. We get to watch their nightmare become a reality. They are part of a story whether they like it or not.

12-22 decade mix kinda disappointing ngl. I have waited for this for 3 years! And it's just so frantic and crammed full of mashups and we basically don't spend more than 30secs on any one song and it just sounds like how an anxiety attack feels. Sorry. And then you compare it with something like the 70s mix which flows so beautifully and comfortably and is confident in its choices and takes its time. Like night and day

i always see the Hockey Narrative Poetry Posts and think ‘what if i do that but quotes from other dumb shit i’m hyperfixated on?’

anyway this is a long winded way of saying i intend to combine Oh, Hello! On Broadway with the leafs

so what was up with that swan bed?/ the chateau lore drabble

soooo one thing about me, is i love a literary reference, and i love writing characters as odes to others in stories

the swan bed- isn't really something subtle, as (well as far as i know anyway) there's really only one story with a swan bed in it, that story being flowers in the attic (in corrine foxworth's bedroom) which I used as inspiration/set dressing for this piece.

in the chateau the bed is beautiful and lush, but is where reader is forced to suffer the excruciating pain of feeding the vampires. in flowers in the attic, corrine's bed is seen as where the "sin"/main conflict of the book comes from. i don't want to spoil anything about the book, but if you know literally anything about FITA, you probably know what i mean. (and is obvi mirrored late on in the book via the dusty, abandoned mattress in the attic later in the book)

but i also kinda used corrine as an inspiration for Spy, as someone who was once humane and caring- only to metamorphize into someone selfish and cruel by the end of the story. (not to say Spy was ever self-less, but he was at least human before he was vampire, and i wanted to have the implication he's only so vicious bc he's been living as a vampire for so long- and can't see his reader as a person anymore. reader is a recourse and a captive- but not human, not anything like Spy himself, like how corrine doesn't even see her own children as family by the end of the book, they're nothing but a liability.

corrine has always been one of my favorite villains in fiction, and really is one of the best utilizations of fairy-tale tropes subverted by FITA. at the start of the book she's like a fair, beautiful and kind-hearted princess, faithful to her husband and loves her family more than anything in the world. But during the events of the story she becomes the villain after returning to living with her mother (who is meant to be like a wicked witch/evil step-mother character, someone who is ugly inside and out contrasts corrine who is beautiful on the outside and REPULSIVE on the inside.)

corrine and spy aren't really all that similar characters all things considered, but i wanted to write them motivated by their shared vices here (selfishness/greed/possessiveness/callousness) and have some fun writing Spy at his worst, and trying to examine how he would be if he were to go all in on the materialistic vanity so common in vampires. corrine motivated by these vices would go on to betray her family (no spoilers but JESUS this lady is evil) and Spy would trick/coerce Engie into "overdoing it" while feeding- knowing he's too new to feeding from humans to have the self-control to stop himself.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that on tumblr fandom used to be practiced very differently. now everyone fucks off to their discords or tumblr groups to discuss everything with a select few, making tags be nearly only used for posting some finished fanworks or not at all

a decade ago people didn't have tumblr groups. people didn't even have dms. if you wanted to talk to anyone about anything you had to make a post, or send an ask (which more often than not would get published and thereby become a post in the end too)

so next time you think "I have a fandom thought but I have to find a small group of hyperspecifically like-minded people to share it with in private" remember all the freaks you could be missing out on meeting by keeping the tags dead. use tags, make friends. fuck discord.
