the great tragedy of supernatural is that it has lines it's not allowed to cross. it can't depict textual incest or even too much maladaptive affection; it can't show the reality of prolonged homelessness or food insecurity or the actual dangers of fraud and theft; it can't delve too deep into the lasting effects of abuse and neglect or trauma; it can't talk about political issues in any meaningful way—it can't contain anything too morally objectionable or uncomfortable for viewers. it has to build and maintain a fantasy that lets people ignore what they don't like. and that's a shame because of its roots in horror, so instead of being free to explore the themes and elements that form the show's foundation, a lot of it is left to subtext, to subtle nods, to "if you know you know" moments.

what the show does manage to depict on screen is rich and captivating, but at the end of the day it has an image to maintain that doesn't align with the reality of its own themes. the show is at odds with itself and its executives, and over time it gets progressively scrubbed clean just like the gritty, low saturation, high contrast lighting of early seasons. it departs even further from its horror foundation, relegates more and more of its worldbuilding and characterization to subtext, or even just memories of the past.

i just think it's a shame that despite its (original) genre, it faced so much opposition and so much sanitization that it never really had a chance to go all-in with its world and characters, and that what little it was able to depict was sucked away over time until it became a ghost of the american gothic horror it once was.

HI CHIP!! of course theres so many things I want to see after waiting so long but honestly I think a ggy game is what I'm expecting next. honest to god anything ranging from vanny!cassie to ggy and all the (human and not Cassies dad) characters in between I would be very happy with. it's why I'm so excited for sotm to finally release and end the mimic incorporation era. literally everything else it has left to cover are things that I would love

but yeah I think a ggy game would be absolutely hype and is actually very likely because of the THREE references/easter eggs weve gotten for him in a row!! I'm very excited to see what they're doing for him because damn ggy for Gregory's backstory has gone untouched for so long

I would love to see it explored in a campaign scenario of Gregory himself finding out about it but tbh I'm honestly expecting some prequel game about it that mostly just confirms it exists and expands upon content we dont know about from ggy like Rabs design and how he interacts with vanny. campaign would obviously be so much better for everyone involved but any ggy content is a win in my book

Hey BMCers what do we think jeremy/michael/christine’s anime opinions r. It seems p reasonable 2 assume Jerry is a pretty big anime fan (I mean “sexy anime female” had 2 b based on smth) but what kind of anime u think he watches specifically? I’ve seen some fan stuff in which he likes mech stuff like gundam/evangelion which is v real v good v true, defo feel that esp with his interest in space and tech stuff. Super cutesy stuff a la My Melody also makes sense considering Hello Kitty shoes but I feel like that would only b an interest he rly explores after canon, when he’s mellowed out a bit n stopped caring about being a Dudely Dude. Jeremy Heere #1 Sanrio Danshi fan. I also been thinking bout Jeremy watching those shitty dime-a-dozen Cute Girls With Swords sci-fi/fantasy harem anime, ykwim? Asterisk War, Irregular At Magic High School, In Another World With My Smartphone,,,,, other one idk my anime knowledge is pretty dated at this point but u know what I mean!!! The real trash ones. THATS what bestie j-dawg is into. It’d b funny if part of his perception of what a “cool hot masculine guy” is like (plus some of his hang-ups with women) comes at least in part from those types of shows. Michael n Christine r more interesting to me bc they’re not explicitly into anime like jerry is but they’re both enough of Weird Artsy Fartsy ppl that they could get into it. Michael’d b into the more retro stuff obvi, n prolly the more like ~experimental~ n ~avant-garde~ shit too. Defo Evangelion, Akira n Ghost In The Shell seem right to me… Serial Experiments Lain jumps out as one he’d b into, plus Kaiba but that’s more recent (aka after the turn of the century lol).
