Lou Reed - October 1974
The Lou Reed archival releases via Light In The Attic have dealt with the very beginnings of Lou's career and the tail-end of Lou's career. And lo, they were good. But now it's time to move into other eras ... namely, the 1970s, a decade that Reed defined in many ways. You could start with a time period that isn't represented by a live album â the bleached-blonde Sally Can't Dance tour! The most dissipated, sleazy and funky tour of the man's life, maybe? Maybe!
Here we've got a nice patchwork job from almost exactly 50 years ago â tracks 1-3 and 11 are from the Felt Forum in NYC on Oct. 9; the remainder are from the Palace Theatre in Dayton, OH, on Oct. 27. Together, they're the best representation of the Sally Can't Dance band in the fall of '74, when the newly released LP was enjoying some somewhat unlikely chart success. Lou was delighted with this development.
"Can you imagine putting out Sally Can't Dance with your name on it?" he asked Creem. "Some of the songs were good before they got butchered, and then it gets popular. That's really horrifying."
Oh well! The performances in NYC and Dayton are extremely fun â as cartoonish and un-subtle as Lou ever got, but so what? Let's just revel in those wakka-chicka guitars from Danny Weis, Prakash John's ridiculous bass solo, the soul-pop-psych keys of Michael Fonfara. Even if Reed was horrified by his newfound bona-fide rock star status â sing along with Lou! â he sounds like he's having a great time onstage, whether dispatching the hits (with plenty of nasty asides) or jamming on some rarely played Sally numbers. The roaring version of "Kill Your Sons" is definitive. Definitive, I say!

Lou Reed performing at Copenhagen in September 1973, as captured by Jan Persson.
"For that 1973 world tour, Reed had put together a fantastic and very energic band they were all from Detroit and they all knew their business. The concept of the tour was to deliver «Berlin» to an eager public. As Reed had been musically brought up in the Warholâs factory, he had become a master of manipulation and he knew how to bring the hysteria element within his crew. Very high on diverse drugs, Reed silently enjoyed it when all his staff, manager, musicians, roadies and friends, fussed around his person. Andy Warhol had found out the lights concept by himself: «What is needed» suggested the Pope of Pop» is to borrow the light effect conceived by Albert Speer» for what will later be known as the «Hitlerian ceremonies»: White light spots, (whiter than white) and with a tremendous intensity all focussed on Lou Reed on an immense black background. And thatâs what they did. The Tour started on September 17 at the Paris Olympia, with eleven European dates to follow. On stage, Lou Reed was wearing black leather. His face was a livid mask and he had an Afro. In Amsterdam, the bootlegers stroke, and realeased a Pirate album called «RocknRoll Animal» That made him laugh and «now here is a title for me» will he declare. Every nights, his big black Mercedes will take him to different venues, and every nights, heâll arrive at the last moment. And his Roadies had to practically carry him up on stage where he had to stagger to reach the mike. The tour was a colossal success thanks particularly to his guitarists who had found a way to «metallize» his repertoire. His band was driven by an tremendous rhythm section: the drummer Pentti Gian played ocasionally with Steppenwolf, and the bassist Prakash John, had just resigned from Funkadelic to be replaced by Bootsy Collins. The lead guitarist Dick Wagner, had debuted with Frost, a band used to the Grande Ballroom. And so thatâs why Steve Hunter was the perfect counterpart: a veritable virtuose who loved to put danger in his technique. Hunter, had once belonged to Detroit (behind Mitch Ryder) and already in the old days he used to cover the Velvet Underground «RocknRoll» on a rather hard mode, and thatâs been the option adopted from the beginning to the end of that mythic tour. Every night the two guitarists will have guitar duels in front of eager crowds. Lou Reed was taking all kind of drugs, and his roadies will confess: he took everything coming his way: coke, speed, weed, valium and Johnny Walker Black Label and the roadies had to hide bottles for him into the amps. Rock critics will put it that way: «Itâs been like a black mass into a Gothic Cathedral with Heroin as a God». jltambo.wordpress.com

In the early 20th century, âmalaria was common even as far north as Cleveland,â says Prakash Srinivasan, PhD, MS, an assistant professor in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology and at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute. The disease was endemic in the U.S. until the 1950s. In 1951, malaria was considered eliminated from the country.  Many factors contributed to achieving that status. Industrialization, the clearing of wetlands where mosquitoes breed, the use of insecticides and window screensâon top of public health measures like malaria-preventing drugs and improved diagnosticsâwere âgame changersâ in the U.S. and most other Western countries in terms of stamping out the disease, says Srinivasan. Anopheles mosquitoesâthe genus that carries malariaâis still present in the U.S. âBut because malaria transmission in the United States has not been a big issue, there is no surveillance of Anopheles populations,â explains Photini Sinnis, MD, a professor in MMI and at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute.
Malaria delenda est, but you'll notice that exterminating mosquitoes wholesale has never been a necessary part of that project.
Mosquitoes actually are not replaceable in any ecosystem that naturally has them and that includes replacing them with any of the non biting species because these are the traits that make them so core to food webs:
Tiny
Can use every single pool of moisture to raise generations no matter how dirty and stagnant and low in oxygen
Can fly
Males get by on just sugars
Females take protein from larger animals to manufacture thousands more eggs
All these things combined allow thst ecosystem to make huge volumes of insects from conditions barren to most other macroscopic life. You might think there are other insects that seem to make huge massive swarms out of nothing but there's really nothing that hits all the same qualities *except other insects that also suck blood.*
It's the precise combo of being able to "prey" on things millions of times larger and breed in nothing but a few drops of filthy rainwater or the moisture in a rotten log. That's the most efficient combination for anything that size to multiply that rapidly where nothing else can even survive, except of course the things that can move in because they eat them :)

Lou Reed - Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden, May 14, 1974
Fifty years ago tonight, Lou Reed was back across the pond, bringing the sleaze to Europe and the UK with the help of a new haircut and a new band â Danny Weis (guitar), Prakash John (bass), Penti "Whitey" Glan (drums) and Michael Fonfara (keyboards). The sound they make could be summed up as Rock and Roll Animal ... plus funk! The rhythm section is definitely nimbler and more dance-able than the previous year, with Weis and Fonfara vamping happily over the top. (Check the breakdown on "Rock & Roll" â are they channeling Head Hunters?)
By the time Lou and the gang hit Stockholm to kick the tour off, they'd already recorded Sally Can't Dance, which would hit shelves in September. The Swedes get a little preview here in the form of an appropriately languid "Ride Sally Ride." That's the outlier â most of this great FM broadcast is high energy stuff, with Lou sounding pretty engaged and pleased to be there (not a guarantee in this era by a long shot). "I love you, too!" he responds at one point to a besotted fan, maybe a bit surprised by the warm sentiment. Then he immediately starts singing about "looking through the eyes of hate." Oh, Lou!
In the encore, the Sally Can't Dance band gets a crack at the Lou Reed white whale â "Sister Ray"! At just about eight minutes, it's a fairly truncated version, launching at a brisk tempo and more or less staying there in monomaniacal fashion, while Lou tries, once again, to hit it sideways. Just like Ishmael said: "I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts."
Lou Says: People make movies in color, but there really aren't any color movies. They're just black and white movies with color. Why not have red grass in a movie? I can go out and see green grass any time, but I can't go out and see black and white.
