Turtles are my favorite, and this tortoise won my heart at the #EarthDay #farmersmarket. Thanks @hattiesburgzoo for sending these precious creatures to #Downtown events. . . . . #getdowntown #inspiringchildlikewonder #visithattiesburg #lovewhereilive #tortoise #turtles #grasseater #preciouscreatures #fantasticbeasts #nikon #nikond7200 #dslr #18140mm #animalphotography (at Town Square Park)

Flashback Friday ~
While sifting through boxes of junk in my garage to throw away, I ran across a very special fossil that I thought had disappeared decades ago. This is *thee* very first piece of instructional material I bought when I decided to begin incorporating aspects taxidermy into my artwork back in 1997. It also was the only piece of instructional material I owned for many years. I'm self-taught in the realm of taxidermy. There weren't pop-up D.I.Y. taxidermy classes back then. Very few people had a personal computer, and YouTube was 8 years away from being launched. I only watched the video 3 or 4 times in total, each time I would occasionally pause to replay parts. Through trial and error, I was able to devise ways to apply the bird techniques shown in the video to other animals (i.e., mammals). I forged ahead with blood, sweat, and tears (mostly my blood). These were the days when taxidermy hung on the walls on hunting shacks, not on the walls of art galleries. Taxidermy was practiced almost exclusively by men, and dead animals were not considered a medium that could be used to create sculpture. My work was trapped in a limbo – the bastard child of taxidermy and fine art. I was pooh-poohed by the art world, and scoffed at by taxidermists. I was accused of creating my work for shock value. I was called a vivisectionist. I endured years of hate mail. Those of you who knew me back then will remember my business cards said "I call it art, you can call it whatever you want". But now.... there is no question. The day I removed that tagline from my website felt momentous... because it was #Youv’eComeALongWayBaby. Hats off to all of the women that came before me who began the process of breaking ground, and high-five to all the gals who are carrying on the legacy, with special thanks to instructors @diamondtooth-blog,  @preciouscreature, and @afterlifeanatomy who are continuing the mission of reshaping taxidermy ethically, esthetically, and demographically. All 3 of these ladies were part of a trailblazing artist collective founded by Scott Bibus, Robert Marbury, and myself in 2004. Please give them all a follow!~ I encourage you to visit www.Sarina-Brewer.com to continue reading about the humble beginnings of our art movement, and how it spurred an international taxidermy revival

Oh my godddddd I wrote a thing for the @nypost! It's about alternative pet aftercare options and discusses the work of Seattle's own @restingwaters as well as the beautiful work of @preciouscreature. 🖤🖤🖤 Read here: http://nypost.com/2017/05/16/these-extremely-loving-owners-preserve-their-pets-for-eternity/ #deathpositive

An oldie - one of my first pieces of taxidermy from 2011. I usually try to not get attached to my work but this one I will keep forever. #taxidermy #preciouscreature
