Amid anger and protest over the Trump administration’s plan to deport millions of immigrants, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to monitor and locate “negative” social media discussion about the agency and its top officials, according to contract documents reviewed by The Intercept. Citing an increase in threats to ICE agents and leadership, the agency is soliciting pitches from private companies to monitor threats across the internet — with a special focus on social media. People who simply criticize ICE online could pulled into the dragnet.
[ ... ]
If this scanning uncovers anything the agency deems suspicious, ICE is asking its contractors to drill down into the background of social media users. That includes: “Previous social media activity which would indicate any additional threats to ICE; 2). Information which would indicate the individual(s) and/or the organization(s) making threats have a proclivity for violence; and 3). Information indicating a potential for carrying out a threat (such as postings depicting weapons, acts of violence, refences to acts of violence, to include empathy or affiliation with a group which has violent tendencies; references to violent acts; affections with violent acts; eluding [sic] to violent acts.”
[ ... ]
Once flagged, the system will further scour a target’s internet history and attempt to reveal their real-world position and offline identity. In addition to compiling personal information — such as the Social Security numbers and addresses of those whose posts are flagged — the contractor will also provide ICE with a “photograph, partial legal name, partial date of birth, possible city, possible work affiliations, possible school or university affiliation, and any identified possible family members or associates.” The document also requests “Facial Recognition capabilities that could take a photograph of a subject and search the internet to find all relevant information associated with the subject.” The contract contains specific directions for targets found in other countries, implying the program would scan the domestic speech of American citizens.
[ ... ]
The posting indicates that ICE isn’t merely looking to detect direct threats of violence, but also online criticism of the agency. As part of its mission to protect ICE with “proactive threat monitoring,” the winning contractor will not simply flag threatening remarks but “Provide monitoring and analysis of behavioral and social media sentiment (i.e. positive, neutral, and negative).” This includes regular updates on the “total number of negative references to ICE found in social media” from week to week. Such sentiment analysis — typically accomplished via machine-learning techniques — could place under law enforcement scrutiny speech that is constitutionally protected. Simply stated, a post that is critical or even hostile to ICE isn’t against the law.

Genuine question, since I'm another person your recent posts have inspired to contact government officials: why is calling the best method? Is it because constant phone traffic disrupts everything else, the idea that people people only call about things they really care about, or something else that isn't apparent to me? I'm really curious as to how this particular feature of government works.
And thank you again for maintaining hope while still spreading awareness. Kindness ripples outwards to touch many lives. Anyway, here's a picture of my service dog being real confused about what we're supposed to be looking at.
Tumblr media
Calling is the best method because congressional staffers actively monitor the number of constituent calls that they receive on [x] issue and have to present that information to their congresscritter on a usually-weekly basis. Whereas emails can easily be responded to with a form letter/go straight to junk/dismissed as a crank/etc. However, I want to emphasize that again, any contact and any proactive action to make your concerns known to your elected officials is better than none. If you are scared to call and want to do an email first to get the hang of it: that is okay! You are still forcing SOMETHING into the system and at least making them register your email. I am not here to shame anyone for taking the steps that feel best to them at first.
Calling is also important as a blue-leaning person because red voters call/badger elected officials more often and have no shame about doing it, so this is the one time you have to channel your inner Republican and make a stink at elected officials. It does work and consistent public pressure/feedback can move important votes and actions either left or right. I do not expect everybody to spend all their time calling their elected officials about every single outrageous thing Trump/Musk/et al are doing, because otherwise you would be doing nothing but. Pick a few issues and monitor them and see what you need to do and who you need to pressure, but if you also need to take a break for your mental health, do that too. That way if there is something you really feel that you have to speak out on at once, you will be more ready to do it and more ready to engage over a longer period of time, rather than just in spasmodic rage bursts about whatever outrage of the day they've cooked up now.
(Also, what a good puppy. Not patting because they are working hard and I respect that, but yes.)

"Today, December 20, marks the official end of the Marburg Virus Disease outbreak in Rwanda. It has been 42 days – two full incubation periods – since the last confirmed case left the national Marburg treatment centre after testing negative.
In previous outbreaks, Marburg, which is caused by a virus related to Ebola, has killed up to 88 per cent of people infected. And Rwanda had never seen this disease within its borders before the current outbreak began in September. Despite Rwandan physicians having never encountered it before, the mortality rate observed in this outbreak is under 23 per cent – the lowest-ever death rate for a Marburg outbreak in Africa.
While the virus initially spread fiercely in two major hospitals in the capital Kigali and among family members of one of the initial cases, Rwanda’s rapid response, with implementation of strict infection prevention and control, isolation and containment of cases, prompt initiation of aggressive supportive care, delivery of investigational therapeutics and vaccines, and tracing and monitoring of contacts quickly brought the outbreak under control. The rate of new cases halved between the outbreak’s second and third weeks and dropped by around 90 per cent thereafter.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this response was an international effort, initiated and led by the Rwandan government, to administer thousands of doses of a promising experimental vaccine to front-line health workers under a clinical trial protocol, with the first subjects vaccinated in a remarkably short timeframe.
...
Rwanda, for its part, has invested heavily in its healthcare system and has incorporated epidemic preparedness into its national health policies. Rwanda has well-trained medical staff working in well-run hospitals and community-based health services. It has been investing in technology-based disease surveillance systems and its laboratories can handle fast, accurate diagnostic testing at scale.
In early September, after months of planning, Rwandan scientists and health officials joined CEPI and other private sector partners to walk through a “tabletop exercise” about the 100 Days Mission. It was through this in-person training exercise that key relationships between disease outbreak experts, Rwandan health authorities and researchers, vaccine developers and clinical trial specialists were cemented.
...
We also have no doubt that with the right focus and funding, such nationally-led, globally-supported, life-saving responses to novel disease outbreaks could be accomplished by any government in any region. By taking a proactive approach and using the 100 Days Mission as a game plan, all countries can get ahead of epidemic and pandemic threats and neutralise their catastrophic potential."

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
According to a new report by the U.S. National Drought Mitigation Center, or NDMC, and the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification, or UNCCD, the combined effects of global warming, drought, and El Niño have triggered similar crises all over the world, from Mexico City to the Mekong Delta.
Using impact reports alongside government data, scientific and technical research, and media coverage of major drought events, the authors examined case-by-case how droughts compound poverty, hunger, energy insecurity, and ecosystem collapse in climate hot spots around the world. They measured impacts in 2023 and 2024, when the planet saw some of the most widespread and damaging drought events in recorded history. What they found is a lesson and a warning sign: Increasingly severe droughts caused by climate change are laying waste to ecosystems and economies everywhere.
“This report is a blistering reminder that climate change and punishing drought are already devastating lives, livelihoods, and food access,” said Million Belay of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, and general coordinator of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa, who wasn’t involved in the research. “We need to get serious about resilience and real adaptation.”
All told, the authors argue that without major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, rising temperatures will lead to more frequent and severe droughts by continuing to inflate heat, evaporation, and volatile precipitation patterns. All the while, urbanization, land use changes, and population growth are expected to continue to strain water resources and influence which assets and areas are most vulnerable to drought impacts. The world’s resilience to those impacts, the report denotes, ultimately depends on the fortification of ecosystems, the adoption of changes to water management, and the pursuit of equitable resource access.
“Proactive drought management is a matter of climate justice, equitable development, and good governance,” said UNCCD Deputy Executive Secretary Andrea Meza in a statement about the report.
Stronger early warning systems and real-time drought impact monitoring, for example, those that assess conditions known to fuel food and water insecurity, are some of the ways countries can better fortify their systems in preparedness for the next big drought event. Others include watershed restoration, the broad revival of traditional cultivation practices, and the implementation of alternative water supply technologies to help make infrastructure more climate-resilient. Adaptation methods, however, must also account for the most vulnerable populations, the authors say, and require global cooperation, particularly along critical food trade routes.

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
Transgender people who U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials detain are no longer recognized by their gender identity, and detention facilities are no longer required to take special care in housing trans detainees. A contracting specialist with the Department of Homeland Security, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal processes, described to The Advocate how the system was unraveling from the inside. The policy shift dismantles a 2015 memo — written, ironically, by President Donald Trump’s now border czar Tom Homan — that detailed how trans people were to be treated in ICE custody. It also puts ICE facilities in danger of violating a congressional mandate that requires ICE to track the number and conditions of transgender detainees. It further means that under the new rules, transgender immigrants are being classified strictly by their sex assigned at birth, often housed in facilities that disregard their identities, and denied basic accommodations they previously were entitled to.
Although ICE detention centers are technically supposed to keep following the old standards, such as keeping data on trans immigrants detained, until new contracts are finalized, the DHS official explained that once those contracts are updated, the previous protections and rules — again, such as for trans immigrants —are just gone.
[...] Homan’s 18-page guidance detailed procedures for identifying transgender detainees during intake, using respectful names and pronouns, ensuring privacy during searches, and providing appropriate medical care, including hormone therapy. Facilities were required to create individualized detention plans developed by multidisciplinary Transgender Classification and Care Committees, all aimed at reducing the risk of sexual assault, medical neglect, and mistreatment. Under the 2015 policy, ICE also committed to collecting and reporting data on transgender detainees, a practice that allowed advocates and legal service providers to monitor conditions and push for accountability. All of that has now been reversed.
In a memo dated April 17, 2025, Acting Executive Associate Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations Kenneth Genalo declared that ICE would “no longer proactively screen for, or record in ICE data systems, related information on aliens who self-identify as a sex other than their biological sex at birth.” The same memo eliminated requirements for specialized committees and individualized housing plans, instructing detention centers instead to house detainees according to their sex assigned at birth. These policy changes originate from Trump’s January executive order titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government,” which mandates that all federal agencies define individuals strictly by their sex assigned at birth.
That directive is now fully reflected in the updated 2025 National Detention Standards, which show the depth of the policy overhaul. “In 2025, ICE is again revising NDS to align with the Executive Order,” the updated standards read. “Accordingly, references to gender have been replaced with sex throughout the standards.”
The Trump Regime tears apart the 2015 memo written by Thomas Homan (who is now most infamously known for being the Trump Regime’s propagandist on immigration) that protected trans detainees in ICE custody.
This is part of the war on trans people conducted by the Tyrant 47 Regime.

Why don't cars have a dash board warning light alerting you when a taillight or headlight is out? You normally don't know until you get pulled over by a cop. Even if you check them before each trip they sometimes burn out while on the trip.
The absence of universal dashboard warnings for burnt-out exterior lights (headlights, taillights, etc.) is a mix of cost, design priorities, and technological limitations—but solutions exist. Here’s why most cars lack this feature and what drivers can do:
Why Most Cars Don’t Warn You Cost-Cutting by Manufacturers:
Adding a monitoring system for every bulb requires additional wiring, sensors, and software, which automakers often omit to keep prices low, especially in budget vehicles.
Example: A $20 circuit to detect bulb failures adds up to millions in production costs across a car model’s lifespan. Simpler Electrical Systems:
Older cars use basic circuits where a burnt bulb doesn’t disrupt the electrical flow (unlike a blown fuse). Modern CAN bus systems can detect failures but aren’t always programmed to alert drivers. Assumption of Manual Checks:
Manufacturers assume drivers will notice via:
Reflections (e.g., light bouncing off garage walls).
Dashboard icons for specific systems (e.g., brake light warnings tied to the brake pedal circuit). Regulatory Gaps:
The U.S. doesn’t mandate bulb-out warnings, though the EU requires rear light failure alerts in newer cars (via ECE Regulation 48).
Cars That Do Have Warnings Luxury/Modern Vehicles: Brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Tesla include bulb monitoring systems in higher trims.
LED Lighting: Many EVs and hybrids with full LED setups (e.g., Ford Mustang Mach-E) self-diagnose faults since LEDs rarely fail abruptly.
Aftermarket Kits: Products like LightGuardian (50–100) plug into taillight circuits and trigger an alarm if a bulb dies.
Why Bulbs Burn Out Mid-Trip Halogen Bulbs: Prone to sudden failure due to filament vibration or temperature swings.
Voltage Spikes: Poor alternator regulation can surge power, killing bulbs.
Moisture/Corrosion: Water ingress in housings causes shorts over time.
Practical Solutions for Drivers Retrofit Your Car:
Install LED bulbs with built-in failure alerts (e.g., Philips X-tremeUltinon).
Use Bluetooth-enabled bulb holders (e.g., Lumilinks) that notify your phone. Routine Checks:
Nightly Reflection Test: Park facing a wall and check light patterns.
Monthly Buddy Check: Have someone press brakes/turn signals while you inspect. Legal Workarounds:
In regions requiring annual inspections (e.g., EU, Japan), mechanics flag dead bulbs.
Use dual-filament bulbs for redundancy (e.g., a brake light that still works as a taillight if one filament fails).
Why It’s Likely to Improve LED Adoption: Longer-lasting LEDs (25,000+ hours) reduce failure rates.
Smart Lighting: New cars with matrix LED or laser lights often self-diagnose.
Consumer Demand: Aftermarket alerts (e.g., $30 Wireless Car Light Monitor) are gaining traction.
Bottom Line
While universal bulb-out warnings aren’t standard yet, technology and regulations are catching up. Until then, proactive checks and affordable aftermarket gadgets can save you from a traffic stop. 🔧💡
Pro tip: If your car has automatic headlights, toggle them to “off” occasionally to manually check all lights in a reflection.

Cost vs. Quality: What to Consider When Investing in Switchgear
Tumblr media
In today’s energy-intensive world, switchgear plays a critical role in managing power distribution safely and efficiently. Whether you’re upgrading your industrial facility, building a commercial plant, or powering a large infrastructure project, choosing the right switchgear is not just a technical decision — it’s a strategic investment. One of the most common dilemmas buyers face is balancing cost vs. quality. So, how do you decide?
Understanding Switchgear: The Heart of Electrical Safety
Switchgear is a combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses, or circuit breakers used to control, protect, and isolate electrical equipment. Its primary role is to ensure the reliability and safety of your power system.
Types of switchgear include:
· Low-voltage switchgear (for commercial and residential use)
· Medium-voltage switchgear (typically for industrial applications)
· High-voltage switchgear (used in power transmission)
Investing in the right switchgear directly impacts operational continuity, personnel safety, and overall infrastructure reliability.
The True Cost of Cheap Switchgear:
While it’s tempting to opt for budget-friendly solutions, low-cost switchgear often comes with hidden risks and long-term expenses.
Inferior Material Quality
Cheaper models often use substandard materials that degrade faster, leading to frequent maintenance or early replacement.
Safety Hazards
Low-quality switchgear can result in arc faults, insulation failure, or overheating — putting workers and equipment at risk.
Increased Lifecycle Costs
Although the initial price may be low, the total cost of ownership (including downtime, repair, and energy inefficiency) is usually higher.
Limited Scalability and Customization
Budget systems are often rigid and harder to scale as your facility grows or needs change.
Why Quality Switchgear Pays Off

Look for trusted brands with certifications like ISO 9001, CE, or IEC 62271. Positive reviews and case studies add credibility.
3. Lifecycle Costs
Don’t just compare sticker prices — consider maintenance, service availability, spare part costs, and expected lifespan.
4. Customization & Flexibility
Choose systems that can evolve with your operation. Modular designs support upgrades and expansions more efficiently.
5. Support and Service
Ensure the manufacturer provides robust after-sales support, technical training, and warranty services.
Cost vs. Quality: The Bottom Line
When it comes to switchgear, cheap is rarely cheerful. Cutting corners today can lead to outages, hazards, and hefty repair bills tomorrow. On the other hand, investing in high-quality switchgear ensures operational resilience, safety, and long-term savings.
The smartest strategy? Aim for value, not just price. Evaluate switchgear as a long-term asset, not just a one-time purchase.
