dipping back into early twentieth century murder mysteries again and it's been a mixed bag so far
tried out clinton h. stagg's thornley colton the problemist, sadly didn't like anything about his writing style, the characters, or the story
dorothy l. sayers' lord wimsey has been fairly enjoyable, i'm several novels deep there, and i've heard it only gets better. lord wimsey is a certified Silly L'il Guy. been getting some pretty wild whiplash though; i'm pretty used to girding my loins against old-timey racism/antisemitism/etc. in books, and sayers' work has clearly been "edited for modern tastes", but sometimes there'll still be something so outrageous it makes me go 'bruh'. while at the same time writing the cliche poc/jewish/etc. characters as being amongst the nicest characters in the books who are never the murderer and who get avenged or a happy ending? it makes for a hard read on just how much sayers was writing into the characters as characters themselves compared to her own thoughts
man, not sure how to feel about father brown. i've always been uncertain how i feel about g.k. chesterton's writing, as the man who knew too much didn't actually do much for me previously, but father brown's one of the big early fictional detective characters so i was very curious to check him out. i liked the twist as to who the actual supporting character would be in the first several stories, but i'm kind of eh so far overall. almost all of the stories and their solutions have been so absurd as to take me out of the story in the ones i've read so far, and the characters have been kinda bland. too much 'something happens and then after little actual investigation and some silent thinking the main character just leans back and explains the entire wild b.s. scenario at the end' for my tastes. also there's an unreliable narrator story where it just straight up lies to the reader (through omission) and i hate that shit
hopefully it gets better in future stories but currently i'm so annoyed at father brown that i'm shelving it for the time being and just rereading crooked house instead

Quote
As he explains so brilliantly in Speak, Memory, [Nabokov] would come to see the relationship between author and reader as analogous to the relationship between chess problemist and solver.
