Look, Pencil Brushes! And a nice paper texture! They're only €3 on Ko-Fi, what's the harm in trying them?
5x Brushes for Clip Studio Paint and 4x Brushes for Procreate, simulating the feeling of drawing in a variety of slightly temperamental pencils!
Comes with a scanned sheet of Arches cold-pressed watercolour paper, where you can adjust the highlights and shadows individually.
These pencils are all meant to be a little quirky, espically the rainbow pencil! I use the blunt ones mostly for very loosey goosey sketching, or the rainbow. The rainbow pencils have a variable amount of colour variance, I'd encourage playing with them. And between you and me, the clip "scratchy pencil" is my favorite for sketch and lines at the moment.

I also have a few watercolor brushes i use for backgrounds but those were downloaded years ago and i dont really remember where they came from im so sorry 💔

Im still not entirely happy with the quality output from procreate. Even on a canvas 5x larger, im having difficulty exporting an image that isnt compressed in some way. The app is fun to use, and much more mobile than csp, so ill continue to sketch and troubleshoot as i go.

I'm going to weigh in and say it probably has everything to do with the cost of software over the cost of hardware. Your average Cintiq is going to run you about $1000 USD brand new, but a good cintiq will last you easily a decade, which makes them a solid long-time purchase (especially since they're not OS dependent like other tablets are - the same cintiq that's hooked up to a Windows 7 works on a brand new M Chip Mac)
With software, it's a whole 'nother story. Toon Boom Harmony is about $1000 a year, Adobe Animate hovers around $270 a year, Moho runs $400 for a perpetual license, Clip Studio EX is $240 for perpetual, etc. It doesn't sound like a lot for a large company, but when you factor that this is the price per license, your costs get exponentially higher depending on the size of your team (and I know that studios often get bulk deals, but it's still going to be a wicked expense).
Procreate, on the other hand, is a one time purchase of $13. It's peanuts compared to everything else available. Even if you're still paying about $1000 for an iPad Pro (which these guys clearly are not using - this looks like older generation iPad Minis), you're savings is in the thousands of dollars.
Is this a problem? Sometimes, it is, actually. Specifically, this becomes a problem for the parent studio that is commissioning a show.
I've worked for Warner Brothers as a retake animator for nearly 5 years now (and have been an industry professional for about 8) and I can say with the uptmost confidence that there is little else that's more frustrating than getting sequences back from overseas studios and realizing that I've been handed flat images. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to make changes to flat png sequences? My whole job is to make changes and adjustments to animation that has come from our vendor studios, and it makes my work take 5x longer when I have to paint over flat images than if I had just been given the source file to begin with.
Is this always a problem? Not usually when we're talking about a studio that's handling all the animation in house. But it becomes an insanely big problem when there's multiple studios involved and none of their pipelines are compatible. It's a larger conversation about the state of the animation industry, where we cut corners, and how we exploit workers. But that's another post for another time.
Anyway, software is likely the bottleneck here, not hardware, and depending on if a studio is working for a larger company, it's likely that they're not being paid enough to begin with to support their hardware and software needs.

Mastering Brushes in Procreate: Techniques and Tips
Tumblr media
Procreate's brush library is a treasure trove for digital artists, offering an incredible range of textures and effects. Mastering these brushes can significantly enhance the quality and efficiency of your artwork. Here are some techniques and tips to help you get the most out of Procreate’s brushes.
Understanding Brush Types
Procreate offers various brush types, each with unique properties:
Sketching Brushes: Ideal for initial outlines or drafts. They often mimic traditional pencils or charcoal.
Painting Brushes: Designed to replicate the effects of painting with physical media like acrylics or watercolors.
Texture Brushes: Perfect for adding surface effects and intricate details.
Inking Brushes: Offer a smooth, fluid line, great for final outlines or calligraphy.
Customizing Brushes
One of the most powerful features of Procreate is the ability to customize brushes:
Adjusting Settings: Enter the brush settings to tweak properties like opacity, size, and flow. Experiment with the sliders to see how they change the brush’s behavior.
Creating Your Own Brushes: You can create a custom brush from scratch or modify existing ones. Try adjusting the shape and grain source for entirely new effects.
Importing and Exporting Brushes: Share brushes with the Procreate community or import brushes others have made. This can significantly expand your creative possibilities.
Brush Techniques
Pressure Sensitivity: Use varied pressure on your Apple Pencil to create dynamic strokes. Light pressure for faint lines and increased pressure for bolder strokes. Click over here Zaided
Layering Strokes: Build up color and texture by layering brush strokes. This is especially effective with semi-transparent brushes.
Tilt Your Pencil: Some brushes respond to the tilt of your Apple Pencil, offering different effects and widths.
Tips for Effective Use
Practice Regularly: Spend time experimenting with different brushes to understand how they behave.
Use Blending Brushes: These brushes are excellent for creating smooth transitions and blending colors.
Keep a Favorite Set: As you experiment, save your most used brushes in a set for easy access.
Take Advantage of Dual Brushes: Procreate 5X introduced dual brushes, allowing you to combine two different brush types for unique effects.
Utilize Brush Opacity and Size: Quickly adjust brush size and opacity using slider controls. This allows for quick changes while working.
Try Out the Smudge Tool: The smudge tool in Procreate can use any brush style, offering a vast array of blending options.
Conclusion
Procreate’s brushes are versatile tools that can dramatically change your digital art. By understanding the types of brushes available, customizing them to suit your needs, and practicing regularly, you can master these tools and bring your artistic visions to life. Remember, experimentation is key; don't be afraid to try new combinations and settings to find what works best for your style.

I use the acrylic one from https://www.georgbrush.club/blog/2020/12/22/free-procreate-concept-art-brush-set-free-xmas-megapack-xxl-updates?rq=Concept%20lite! I don’t test brushes often, it just so happens that this is the one I’ve tested w Cheesebot and liked the texture 🫶 it seems like the entire pack may be worth exploring though
Tumblo isn’t letting me add videos to reblog>:( I’ll send it over on discord hehehehe (rubbing my hands evilly)

Feeling the pressure from finals, so I drew an equally stressed-out Skwisgaar. I’ve been meaning to draw this iconic look for a while, and I needed to try out a new pencil brush.

First of all thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. Here’s a step-by-step of how I do coloring, using the sketch of that Stonewood family as an example.
For me, the hardest part of doing colors is choosing them! Color theory is rough, but I usually start by blobbing them on really roughly behind the line art until I get something I like. (if I’m having a particularly tough time I use other art as color reference) When I’m done it looks something like this:
Tumblr media
After that, I add a clipping mask so everything stays in the lines, and I clean up the colors, making sure to add details wherever possible.I use a flat, opaque brush for this. Then I go back in with a textured brush to add blush, dirt, cloth texture etc. This is when I would color any lineart that needs it, too. Then it looks like this:
Tumblr media
I use a multiply layer to shade the characters using an the selection tool and an opaque but textured brush (I used the 6B pencil procreate brush here but it honestly changes every time). Then I add a gradient clipping mask over the entire work and mess around with the layer settings until I like it. Then it’s done!
Tumblr media
Hope this helps! Layers under the cut:

(I have a couple other drawings grouped in there but it should still make sense)
