🦉The Panathenaia🦉

28 Hekatombaion

The annual Panathenaia in Athens was Athena’s biggest civic festival, in which Athena Polias, Athena Nike, and Athena Hugeia were honored. The main purpose of the Panathenaia was to deliver a new saffron-colored robe (peplos) to the olivewood statue of Athena Polias in the Erechtheum. Woven into this peplos was a depiction of Athena’s victory alongside and in support of Zeus in the Gigantomachy. A second myth that was of great importance here was Athena’s birth from Zeus’ head, her birthday being celebrated on 28 Hekatombaion. The festival may have originally only been celebrated on this day, but later grew into an 8 day long occasion from 23 - 30 Hekatombaion. Competitions took place on most of the days, with an all-night celebration (pannykhis) on 27 Hekatombaion preceding a dawn procession up to Athena’s Great Altar on the Akropolis for a grand sacrifice of a hekatomb and the presentation of the peplos.

Like many festivals, it was a chance for the population to celebrate their communal identity, but as it developed and grew and was influenced by national events, the festival also became a chance for Athens to display its growing power and wealth. Athena’s adopted son in myth, King Erikhthonios, was credited with establishing the festival and also with erecting the statue of Athena Polias. Through him, the Athenian citizens were in a sense descendants of Athena, adding to the importance of this festival. In 566BC, it was supposedly Peisistratos who instituted the “Greater Panathenaia” which would happen every four years, a grander version in which even non-Athenians could compete in the events. Following Kleisthenes’ democratic reforms, Athenian-only tribal events were included. After the victory at Salamis during the Persian Wars, a trireme on wheels was added to the procession. After the headquarters of the Delian League moved to Athens, increasing its power and domain, Athens’ “allies” were required to participate in the festival and also to provide a panoply and sacrificial cow for the festival.

The Peplos… and the Peplos

As mentioned, the annual peplos for the statue depicted the Gigantomachy and was saffron-colored. It was started nine months prior when the loom was set up during the artisan festival of Khalkeia. The arrhēphoroi, four high-born girls aged between 7 and 10, and the ergastinai (female workers) who were also high-born women, were involved in the making of this peplos.

A second ‘peplos’ later came into play. This was the massive sail of the trireme that was added to the procession after the Persian Wars. It also depicted the Gigantomachy, now with increased importance as a metaphorical and mythological link to Athens’ battle and victory against the Persians. This sail was made by male professional weavers and was only presented at the Greater Panathenaia.  It is important to note that originally these two were conflated in scholarship, until John Mansfield’s dissertation in 1985, The Robe of Athena and the Panathanaic Peplos. Walter Burkert’s Greek Religion, a common resource for Hellenic Polytheists, predates this, being published first in 1977.

The Pannykhis and The Procession

The Pannykhis was a celebration on the Akropolis that lasted all night on 27 Hekatombaion. Not a lot seems to be known about it, but choruses of young men and women were featured, as was the sunrise torch race. This team relay race started outside the Akademos at the altar of Eros, where a sacrifice may have been made to both Athena and Eros. It went into the city, through the agora and up to the Akropolis to light the flame at the Great Altar of Athena for the sacrifice.

At sunrise, the procession would gather at the Dipylon Gate (main gate to the city walls) in the Kerameikos (potters’ quarters). Male and female, citizen and metic (resident foreigner) and even former slaves took part in this. It was led by members of Athena’s cult which would include her priestess, the kanēphoroi (basket-bearers) who wore white makeup and carried baskets containing ritual implements for the sacrifice, and the arrhēphoroi and ergastinai (female workers) who had worked on the peplos. After them came the other religious and government officials.

Metics would wear purple robes and carried silver trays of cakes and honeycombs, and their daughters carried water pitchers. Former slaves carried oak branches. Handsome elder aristocratic men (thallophoroi), would carry olive branches. Accompanying the procession would be musicians playing music, and the sacrificial animals.

Events

Based on inscriptions listing prizes for winners, a possible program has been reconstructed as follows:

Day 2 - Athletic Contests for Boys and Youths

Day 3 - Athletic Contests for Men

Day 4 - Equestrian Contests

Day 5 - Tribal Contests

Day 6 - Torch Race and Sacrifice

Day 7 - Boat Race

Day 8 - Awarding of Prizes, Feasting and Celebrations

Musical contests included competitions for solo aulos (“flute”) and kithara (“lyre”) players, singing and playing the kithara, and singing with aulos accompaniment. Along with these there were competitions for the recitation of epic poetry.

Athletic contests included footraces (200, 400 and 4800 meters), boxing, wrestling, hoplite race, pentathlon (running, wrestling, long jump, discus and javelin throwing), pankration (Combination of boxing, wrestling and kicking). Many of the contests had two or three age divisions.

Equestrian contests included a horse race, chariot races with both two and four horses, a javelin throw from horseback, and a mule-cart race. In the horse and chariot races, it was the owner of the horses who was awarded the prize, and thus it was possible for women to be ‘winners’ of these events.

Tribal contests were for Athenians only who would represent their tribe. It included a pyrrhic dance (armed dance using movements reflecting battle), euandria (male beauty or fitness contest), the torch race and a boat race in the harbour. The apobates race was also one of the tribal contests associated with this festival (but not unique to Athens), in which warriors jumped from speeding chariots. It’s unclear if they finished the race on foot, or if they hopped on and off the moving chariot. Traditionally, Erikhthonios was considered the inventor of charioteering in battle attire. 

Prizes for musical contests were gold crowns and money. For athletic and equestrian contests, they were special Panathenaic amphorae filled with sacred olive oil. These had an image of the event on one side and of an armed Athena on the other, and symbolized the many aspects of Athena celebrated at the festival. Prizes were also given for second place.

Offerings & Communal Meal

The biggest offering during the festival was the hekatomb for Athena Polias at the end of the procession - a sacrifice of a hundred or more animals, primarily cows but also sheep. This may have come after preliminary offerings, and either the thigh pieces or the bones and fat would be given as burnt offerings, with musical accompaniment. It wasn’t just Athena Polias who would receive offerings, however; during the procession to the great Altar there would be individual sacrifices given to Athena Nike and Athena Hugeia at their temples. There would also be special cakes offerings. After the sacrifices, the meat would be roasted and distributed as communal meals for residents of the city, but tribal banquets subsidized by wealthy citizens may also have contributed to these meals.

Ideas for Modern Celebration

Length: Could be celebrated for 8 days, just on 28 Hekatombaion, or that day plus the night before if you want to include inspiration from the pannychis

Torch race: If celebrating with friends or family, you could stage a relay race. If solitary, you could include “torches” in a procession by using a lit candle

Procession: A procession could be made (at dawn if possible) from your front door, front gate, or other location that could stand in as a “gate”. A candle, offerings, and olive or oak branches could be carried, and music played.

Contests: In the days leading up to 28 Hekatombaion, or on the day, you could engage in competitions with friends or family

Music: Play a devotional playlist or other music, play an instrument if you know how

Reading hymns and prayers

Communal meal: You could cook and share with family and friends

Honor Athena Nike, Athena Hugeia and Athena Polias with offerings, you could light candles for each of them with the candles from your procession

This is why the battle over pronouns has been so pitched. For right wingers, gender is a means of structuring society, of enforcing order, of reverting back to a prior hierarchy. Of course, gender is a construct, and particularly for non-binary people, the demand that a person adhere to their sex is a form of control, a denial of the reality of their identity. For some years, liberals tried as a matter of courtesy to use pronouns that a person used for themselves. To enforce a rigid order, right wingers understood they needed to destroy this practice as a means to superpose the power of fixed categories over the complexity of gender.

I'm slow on the uptake sometimes and have to ruminate over new ideas. I've been chewing all day over this post.

A couple stories jumped out in my social feeds. A North Carolina high school valedictorian was prevented from speaking freely about the plight of trans people in his graduation speech. And a library branch manager, an employee at the library branch for fifteen years, was summarily fired for allowing the inclusion of a book, When Aiden Became A Brother in a patron-led book display themed "Color Our World."

I've been slow to understand gender politics. I had to learn a lot and I'm sure there is so much more I need to learn. The authoritarian use of language that Marcy wheeler points too provides a useful perspective to understand these stories in a way I hadn't before.

Like a really large number of Americans I basically live pay check to pay check. Firing someone seems a big deal to me. For a dedicated professional like Lavonnia Moore, she's effectively run out of town too. And she's concerned that no matter where she might move to take a library position a hate campaign may follow. It's just so injust!

Last week OpenAI revealed a new conversational interface for ChatGPT with an expressive, synthetic voice strikingly similar to that of the AI assistant played by Scarlett Johansson in the sci-fi movie Her—only to suddenly disable the new voice over the weekend.

On Monday, Johansson issued a statement claiming to have forced that reversal, after her lawyers demanded OpenAI clarify how the new voice was created.

Johansson’s statement, relayed to WIRED by her publicist, claims that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman asked her last September to provide ChatGPT’s new voice but that she declined. She describes being astounded to see the company demo a new voice for ChatGPT last week that sounded like her anyway.

“When I heard the release demo I was shocked, angered, and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference,” the statement reads. It notes that Altman appeared to encourage the world to connect the demo with Johansson’s performance by tweeting out “her,” in reference to the movie, on May 13.

Johansson’s statement says her agent was contacted by Altman two days before last week’s demo asking that she reconsider her decision not to work with OpenAI. After seeing the demo, she says she hired legal counsel to write to OpenAI asking for details of how it made the new voice.

The statement claims that this led to OpenAI’s announcement Sunday in a post on X that it had decided to “pause the use of Sky,” the company’s name for the synthetic voice. The company also posted a blog post outlining the process used to create the voice. “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice,” the post said.

Sky is one of several synthetic voices that OpenAI gave ChatGPT last September, but at last week’s event it displayed a much more lifelike intonation with emotional cues. The demo saw a version of ChatGPT powered by a new AI model called GPT-4o appear to flirt with an OpenAI engineer in a way that many viewers found reminiscent of Johansson’s performance in Her.

“The voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson's, and it was never intended to resemble hers,” Sam Altman said in a statement provided by OpenAI. He claimed the voice actor behind Sky's voice was hired before the company contact Johannsson. “Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky’s voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn’t communicate better.”

The conflict with Johansson adds to OpenAI’s existing battles with artists, writers, and other creatives. The company is already defending a number of lawsuits alleging it inappropriately used copyrighted content to train its algorithms, including suits from The New York Times and authors including George R.R. Martin.

Generative AI has made it much easier to create realistic synthetic voices, creating new opportunities and threats. In January, voters in New Hampshire were bombarded with robocalls featuring a deepfaked voice message from Joe Biden. In March, OpenAI said that it had developed a technology that could clone someone’s voice from a 15-second clip, but the company said it would not release the technology because of how it might be misused.

Chapter II: My Everything

Lucien

Lucien would never forget the day he met Elain. He’d heard the rumors about her, of course. She’d come into her power a few months before the solstice, recognized and revered as a seer almost immediately. There had been a mild interest shown on his father’s part, but he had no interest in arranging or rushing Lucien’s marriage. Considering the chaos and scandal that preceded his own union, it wasn’t exactly a surprise.

Lucien’s business in Summer was strictly professional, all about turning on his charm as a courtier and setting down new political anchors. But then the energy of the room had shifted. A thread pulled taut inside of him, winding out. Across the vast space of the ball room, he found the other end of it.

She was stunning in every sense of the word, dressed that evening in a sunset pink gown, her face slightly flushed from dancing, even if her partner seemed to be lacking in any sort of aptitude for the task. He knew he’d have to remedy the issue himself, making his move the moment it was socially acceptable. Luckily enough, the male moved on before Lucien could make himself look like an entitled ass in his desperation to speak with his mate. He’d crossed the floor, offered his arm, and that moment—taking her hand and drawing her into that first dance—had started it all. Had led them here.

Once again they stood hand in hand, eager to accept the silken fabric of white and gold meant to be wound around their joined hands where they stood before the court's High Priestess prepared to say their vows. Elain was resplendent in her mating gown, a lightweight dress that complemented the palette of the scarf binding them. The off-shoulder gown left her arms bare, the pleated bodice hugging her figure close before the skirt flared loosely from her slender waist, its sheer golden train trailing a few feet behind her.

But beautiful as all of that made her, it was the unadulterated joy in her eyes as they exchanged their vows that stole his breath. Hope for what their future holds. “You’re exquisite,” he’d breathed the moment he saw her. “Simply exquisite.”

The bond between them had thrummed as her cheeks heated, living and writhing between them with the tension building with each day they waited to truly accept the bond, putting on this grand display for their families and courts. All he needed was a bed and four walls to see their bond to its full glory, but with Elain’s raising… Though the concern could never be brought into conversation with polite company, Lucien could read Lady Archeron’s fears well enough. Elain was her most beautiful daughter and greatest prize on the marriage market. She wasn’t going to chance anything physical happening before vows were exchanged with a prince some dared call rakish. And Elain was the dutiful daughter, to a fault.

It had been a special kind of torture, shoving back the instinct to claim, claim, claim when he snuck into the guest room his family provided Elain. To wake each morning and fall asleep each night with her smaller form flush against his, her soft little breaths at his ear, her scent—so uniquely Elain—that stayed caught in his nose in dreams and reality both.

Now, seeing her in her mating gown, haloed by a sunset that just kissed the waters beyond, Lucien thought it was almost worth the wait.

Elain adored Lucien’s parents in every sense of the word. It’s why she’d had so few disagreements with the lavish event their mating ceremony turned out to be, planned with the help of his mother. If she was honest, the entire evening had been a girlhood dream come true. And yet all she could think of was the events that would follow the reception’s closure—or at least their leave from it.

Even with that said, all that came before it made for a night to be remembered, particularly their first dance together. Whatever fuss her mother and father had been making was long forgotten, with the ceremony and formal mating offering behind them.

What had started as a formal dance slowly morphed into something softer, hands once so carefully placed now drifting to pull each other close. One of Lucien’s hands had splayed across her lower back, drawing her in until she melted against him, arms coming up over his shoulders, her nose pressed against his pulse. His other hand slipping beneath her hair to cradle her neck. It left only enough room between them so they didn’t trip over one another.

It didn’t leave any room for her to misunderstand a single word leaving his lips, too quiet for anyone but her to hear, even as the worst of Day’s gossip-mongers twirled around them.

So, like warm honey each endearment flowed from his lips, their tender charm cleaved only by a filthy promise to complement each one.

Each and every time I see you, you seem more beautiful than the last. Tonight… I don’t know how much longer I can play this game when all I can think about is ripping this dress to pieces and worshiping every inch of you.

Every word was spoken so easily. His face never shifted, his scent never changed. Even as she felt desire pooling deep within herself. She saw the hunger in his eyes alone when he pulled back enough to claim her mouth. There was a familiar pressure around them. And the next time she opened her eyes the party had vanished, replaced by a massive bed and a crackling hearth.

She couldn’t help but laugh. “Your mother—”

“My mother is a mated female. She’ll understand. And if she actually has a problem with us leaving early, she can take it up with me after the honeymoon. Now—” A feral grin crossed his face, a silent vow of wicked things to come. “—I believe I was just beginning to tell you my plans for our time away.” His nose swept down the side of her neck ever so gently, lifting away only for him to press a soft kiss beneath her ear. Elain didn’t bother trying to suppress the shiver that coursed through her. “The things I want to do to you,” he groaned, circling her until his breath warmed her nape, his nimble fingers unfastening each button at the back of her dress until the white silk pooled to the floor. “Mate.”

That word was her undoing. His fingers had just started working open the corset’s tie when she whipped around to face him again, dragging him down by the neck to kiss her. The taste of him would ruin her, that she couldn't deny.

There was a sudden heat down her spine, gone as quickly as it appeared, the stench of singed fabric cleared with a soft wind. Breaking the kiss, she scowled at her mate. “Did you just burn my clothing off?”

“I singed a few laces,” he purred, ripping through the weakened garment in a single motion. “You can keep pretending you actually care or you can let me take you to bed and fulfill every filthy promise I made on that dance floor.”

His mouth was on her again, the tip of his tongue sweeping across her lower lip. The heat of the bond only built as she let him in, channeling what focus she could manage into working open the buttons of his jacket and shirt. They fell to the floor in a forgotten tangle of fabric, buried beneath the skirt of her dress seconds later. “Cauldron. You’re going to be the death of me.”

“A bit dramatic, don’t you think?” Elain panted. “I’m just going to ruin you for anyone else.”

He chuckled, laying her down on the mattress at her back. “Little dove, that was done the moment you accepted my request to dance.” His calloused fingers traced down the tender flesh of her stomach, dipping just low enough to graze her clitoris, drawing out a soft whimper. “Hmm.”

“Lucien.”

“Such a mouth on you and one little touch later, where are we?” A single finger pushed into her core and she groaned. “Sweet, needy girl, already soaked for me.” Adding a second finger almost immediately, he curled them both inside of her, setting her trembling in his arms.

Reaching up, she loosened the knot of leather tying his hair out of his face, her fingers twisting through the strands at the back of his head. She needed to taste him again. Mate. Mine. Claim. She didn’t need any sort of daemati gift to know the same thought had lodged in his own mind, a tempest of need and emotion flooding her very veins.

Groaning into her mouth, Lucien rolled his hips into hers, the hard length of him all the more obvious to her with her legs spread to cradle his hips. She broke away just long enough to gasp out something that ended up sounding more like a plea than a command, but he honored it all the same, quickly stripping his pants and shirt.

She reached to plant a hand on his chest, trying to keep a clear enough head to think of something other than the firm muscle beneath her palm—the hard length of him against her “We can wait, Elain,” he offered, reading the nervous energy that had cut through the fog of lust that had nearly consumed them both.

“No. Just…”

“I guarantee there is nothing you could do tonight to ruin the gift we’ve been given, Elain.” And if that didn’t cut right to the root of the issue. “Let me show you, my love.”

She nodded. “Close your eyes. All I want you to do for now is feel. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes,” she whispered. She hoped. But so inexperienced, who was to say—The first stroke of his tongue banished any concern of inadequacy from her mind. Elain hadn’t even noticed him move that far down the bed through their short discussion of her reservations. “You don’t have to—”

“You have a few things to learn, Elain, if you’ve convinced yourself that tasting you is an inconvenience to me. It’s all I’ve thought about for weeks. Relax,” he finally crooned.

It only took a moment longer for her to go pliant beneath his touch, earning a groan of approval, his calloused hands wrapping over the tops of her thighs to lock her in place against his mouth. “Gods.” She bit her lip nearly hard enough to break skin, trying to keep from revealing how easily his touch destroyed her self-control.

“None of that,” he growled, pulling away just long enough to scold her. “I want to hear every sweet little sound you make for me, Elain. How else will I know how to satisfy you in the future?”

At this point she doubted there was much he could do that wouldn’t satisfy her, not that she had any intention of feeding her mate’s ego more than this moment undeniably would.

Her case wasn’t helped any by the near violent trembling in her thighs when his head dropped again. “Lucien. Lucien, wait. Too much.” His mouth closed over her clit, two fingers pushing deep inside of her. She screamed, fist clenched tight in his hair as the first wave rolled through her.

She wasn’t sure if he realized how new all of it was to her. Of course Lucien knew she hadn’t gone as far as to let a male into her bed, but had he pieced together she hadn’t so much as touched herself? How could she, so fearful of judgement from her family and their staff if they could scent it on her the next morning?

There beneath her mate she couldn’t manage more than a whimper of protest when he continued working her through the crashing wave of sensation, unbearable pressure building too quickly. “Come on, sweetheart,” he growled, the vibration rippling through her.

“I’m almost—”

His fingers curled sharply, teeth pinching down enough to sting until her second climax broke through her. He slide up her body, mapping each tender point of skin along the way, his fingers keeping a steady rhythm inside her to drag her back down, spiraling back to some semblance of coherency.

Cassian’s brows furrowed concern laced on his features, but he nodded, “I need to go out to the Illyrian camps and make sure my soldiers are up to my standards.”

“And you were going to leave without saying goodbye, Old Man?”

Cassian’s wings twitched as his eyes widened. “Old man?”

I jokingly pressed a palm to my forehead, “Oh I’m sorry, I meant Old Male? Better?”

The General crossed his arms looking at the floor and muttered, “I’d prefer it if Old was dropped all together,” He looked back at me his features softening at me as I grinned back at him. “Do you think I’m old?”

Too quickly he pulled away and lowered our hands from my face. I laced my fingers with his and we walked out to the balcony. Cassian flared his wings, the sun highlighting the dark red hues and membrane on his wings.

He turned to me and gave me a playful wink “Safe travels, General, wouldn’t want you to hurt your brittle old bones.” He laughed, flicked my nose, and launched into the air.

I leaned on the balcony railing watching him take to the skies in awe and tilted my head when he paused and turned to me, I gave him a smile, knowing he probably couldn’t see me and waved at him. He lifted his hand in response and turned and headed out, I stayed out there until he was out of my line of sight and headed into the dining room. Only to be met with a second pair of Hazel eyes. “So, Cassian’s pretty cute,” He joked, throwing the line I said to him a few nights before.

Heat flared in my cheeks, “Busy body.”

Azriel just pointed his thumbs at himself, “Spymaster.”
