PROGRESS UPDATE + VOTING RESULTS!! [4/20/24]

Hey Witxhes! So the votes are in and first of all, I can't tell you all how much I appreciate the time you took to read & vote for the samples. The process was very illuminating, to say the least, hahah. 

I'll start with the voting results! With 64.8% of the vote, 2nd person POV came out on top (which isn't too surprising!).

Next up, winning 66.7% of the vote, y'all made it VERY clear that you would much rather have your MC in their lab, working away at trials of the Hangover Cure. 

Now, onto the tricky bit... OG vs AU. It seems you guys had as hard of a time deciding between them as I did, leaving the vote split pretty evenly. 

So that being said, I'm gonna go back to the storyboard to see what threads I can take from the OG and AU stories to weave into something new... something that combines the best elements of both. A new story where the reader can choose if their MC has been closer or more isolated from the Silverlakers, among some other things. But I'm excited and really intrigued to see where this new story format ends up taking us! 

And as planned, I'll be adding a bunch back to the prologue so the reader can get a better feel of the Silverlaker dynamics, right off the bat. 

Alright, onto the most frequent thing I was asked about during this run... Ash. Soo I heard a lot of feedback from some readers having issues with MC having an established relationship in their teenage years, that was out of the control of the reader/MC. And while I'm not trying to take away your character's autonomy, I am trying to tell a story that begins a specific way. 

I know that this story is new, and our relationship as writer and reader is also new and tentative and vulnerable, but I'm asking you to trust me with the story I'm telling. There will be sooo many options, dearest readers, for you to explore all of the ways your MC's relationship with Ash was or wasn't... whatever. And how MC feels about it now. Nothing will be assumed or shoe-horned, as there will be lots of choices, questions, and room for customization. 

So! While I work away on the first rewrite, I'll be posting character profiles. ROs & Silverlakers to start with, and then family & some of the outer Witching World. As for the actual demo, I'm going to try to have it written and posted for 15 May. But if everything aligns and I finish it before then, I'll be running over here to share it with y'all. So thanks again, and please don't forget about me & the Silverlakers in the next couple weeks 😅

I have to mention how when I got introduced to Genesis' Selling England by the Pound album by my friend, I initially misinterpretted the cover as having frog people in old-style british clothes there because they appeared green in colour, and I though the album's name was Selling England by the Pond

PROGRESS UPDATE #4 — 1O MAY 2024

hey Witxhes! sooo the Jules epiphany has temporarily taken ahold of the story, specifically the prologue. MC has a rather intense childhood/background, and I'd been planning to dole it out as necessary... in bits & bites throughout the story

but the Jules Changes™️ have forced my hand much earlier and honestly... I think the story will be better off because of it. as the reader, you get to start shaping your character's past and current reactions to their early life, giving you [I believe] a much better idea of the Witxh you're creating.

the real big change is that it immediately starts pretty really fucking dark. like, with your MC's scariest & worst memories of their evil Witch mother, and then we're just off running from there. my concern is that by not easing into the bleak soul shit, that I risk losing some readers.

I reeeally hope that's not the case because I think this will end up being the absolute best version of the story I want to tell. your MC will not be railroaded into feeling or reacting a certain way to these events and I think it lays a better foundation... not necessarily for the good vs bad elements or variables, but to allow for different characters to emerge from shit circumstances.

anyway as I keep saying... the more I write, the more fucking excited I get to being one step closer to sharing the new demo with y'all. my original plan was to release it like I did with the OG/AU demos, as a prologue + chap1 package.

but the more I keep adding to my storyboard and moving things around... I think it's more likely that I release the full prologue, followed by chapter 1 released in two VERY LARGE parts. Probably 7-10k each, but right now this is all very much in flux until this Jules shit settles down, hahah. I'll keep y'all posted but I'd like to have the prologue up next week, sometime close to the original projected date of 15 May.

History of Frog Rock

The initial spark for Frog Rock lit in 2005 when childhood best friends Theo Eustis and Lilac Glazier met in a coffee shop in Portland. Theo writes in his memoir, Before We Croak: 

Lilac was wearing her tie dye t-shirt, with a giant frog in the center giving a peace sign. I was wearing a Nirvana shirt that I had spray-painted a giant X on. We had been playing together in some crappy alt-rock outfit, and we both hated it. The rock ethos of the time,  the self-flagellation, moaning “rape me before I kill myself” or whatever, just seemed pointless. Why can’t you rock out and have fun? We were talking about this, getting more and more frustrated, and all of a sudden I stopped, looked at her shirt, looked at her, and said “I’ve got it. Frog rock”. And that’s how it started.

The pair joined up with drummer Kylie Swift and keyboardist Ben Beckham. They called themselves Ribbit, and quickly developed an aesthetic- and a cult following- centered around bright colors, crazy stunts, and a free-for-all attitude. Their first concert was in the middle of  a performance by the Portland Circus, in which the band snuck backstage, ran on stage carrying instruments and pushing a drum set on a trolley, got quickly set up, and played three full songs before getting kicked off again.

Ribbit’s first album, The Ribbit Show featuring Rex the Frog, was released on June 7th, 2007, and was a minor success among college stations and internet users. The record caused a slight controversy when many parents, thinking they were buying a children's record, were shocked to hear lines such as “death metal is for punks/ and punk is for bastards/ we’re not like that, we’re Ribbit, baby/ fuck first, think after”. The scandal escalated to the band being sued for false advertising, after which they were forced to put a sticker on records saying We Are Not Actually A Children’s Band.

The Ribbit Show eventually caught the attention of two other musical misfits. One was Lynne Cason, a 19 year old from Eugene, Oregon, who was inspired to start a similar band called Amphibalicious with drummer Sid Bennet and bassist Clarence Duke. Her brand of frog rock was slightly more fine-tuned, with notes of David Bowie, Prince, and later on Nancy Wilson.

The other protogée was Portlander Ruthie Danniel. He discovered Ribbit at 18 and quickly became part of their small circle of crazed fans, the Froggies. Ruthie briefly had his own frog rock group, the Order Anura, and later started a record label called Skin Shed Records. He is credited with bringing the frog rock community together, and supposedly invented many of their traditions, such as the Frog Rock Circus, an annual music festival (named in honor of the infamous Portland Circus show), and the Frog Olympics, in which band members and fans compete in ridiculous sports such as Rock Paper Scissors Mega and Frogball, a fast-paced combination of tennis, dodgeball, and rollerblading.

The first wave of Frog Rock quieted down around the 2010s, making way for the second wave: the London Revival. Seminal records by Ribbit, Amphibalicious, Chorus of Colors, and Pipa Pipa were imported to indie stores in London, and slowly new bands started to form. The South London music venue Maniac Mansion became a hotspot for these new british Froggers, which included The London Croakers, Darwin Frog, and Poison Dart.

This time around, the ringleader is universally identified as Vincent Cobb, aka Mr. Hopp, aka the Kermit Crimelord. The young musician with bright green hair and a Bowie-esque stage presence was also the co-founder of LiliSounds, the label that pressed most of the important London Revival records.

The London Revival took the bare bones of American frog rock and added a dash of britpop and British dry humor. This is the frog rock (at this point it was always written lowercase) that, to some extent, spread around Europe: to France (Les Crapauds, Empoisonné), to the Netherlands (3eaweed, the first "frog rock boyband", and Superkwak) and even to Basque Country (Igela Izan, jauzi egin).

Nowadays we are living in the third wave of frog rock, kickstarted during the pandemic and thriving on the internet. With a glimmer of hyperpop and gen-z culture, this wave is dominated by bands like Messrs. Marsupial, Tie-Dye-Die-Time, and The Bowling Stoners. Though frog rock is now international, and more and more online, the original frog rock community still holds much weight, and events like the Frog Rock Circus and the Frog Olympics have been going strong since the very beginning.

i really want to finish chapter 13 this week, its looking to be busy at work during my 12hr shifts but maybe i can squeeze it through…

my biggest weakness is transitioning between scenes, i always get stuck going from one thing to another naturally 😭 i always feel like i should be adding more to a scene before moving on

It's Wednesday my dudes! I have a lot of projects floating around so I wanted to consolidate most of them in one long post. Not included is my Evenstar (because I just posted a photo yesterday), and a couple experimental unfinished pieces I don't know if I will finish.

Chugging along with this guy. I'm on row 83 out of 111 and just about to hit the second colour change. At this point it's mainly stockinette so the rows are going pretty fast for how long they are.

Slow prog on this blanket since I only work on it when I'm in bed or on the couch. But since it won't be cold enough to need this until next year I'm quite fine with that. I also think it's probably too wide but I'm not redoing it.

Started this on a whim to play with sweater construction and now I do like two rows every couple days. I do want to eventually finish it but it's quite boring. Maybe I'll add some plain stockinette rows in just to make faster.

This shawl is Haunting me. It's so pretty but extremely boring to knit and extremely slow going. Plus it's taking up two sets of needles. But it's so prettttyyyy. Eventually I'll come up with a plan to finish it but until then it lives in shame.

The first of my two "doctor's appointment" projects. I haven't really been knitting too much in the waiting room because of how bad my back is so he's barely different looking. I've been tempted recently to frog this and restart with either a different pattern or just better brioche skills but I haven't been willing to pull the trigger on it yet.

The second "doctor's appointment" project. I had enough of this yarn for three pairs of socks but haven't hard the urge to knit any until now. Nice and simple toe up vanilla socks in worsted weight is very relaxing.
