Day 1 of vis comm, art foundation on 30/10/2020.
I created a collage piece and decided to shrink it in the printer. The text says “Think communist be flexible. Be lazy like a dragon lay on pink fluffy carpet.
After that I have to worry about coding in unity and adding an art piece for instagram.

I stuck at it! This was a real struggle to see if I was actually able to carry this on into February, but I’m really happy with how it came out. Hope you all enjoy :)

Week Two: 21st September.
Sarah was not in college on this day, so we worked with Tom on the more technically side of production. We were able to run through how to use the 'VLE' section on the college site, and how this can benefit our discussions when not at college and we have some free time on-line. I found this incredibly beneficial as it meant that everyone can keep up-to-date with each other and we won't forget through-out the weeks what we've done or what we've decided to do to improve different sections.  We also got the opportunity within out technical role groups to brain storm what our responsibilities are. For example, I'm apart of the music team, so we thought about specifically:
How we'll be creating our music.
Which programme are we going to use
Who are we going to keep in contact with on a regular bases
How often are we going to report back to the group about our ideas.
I'll post what we thought our responsibilities were after I post this. The original copy is on the college's VLE, but I think it would be a good idea to have a copy here as well as I feel I'll be using tumblr a lot more often.
Finally, we had a read through of the whole script where everyone read their own individual parts. This gave everyone a clear idea on what the main story is through-out Fugee and we started discussing rough idea's to which sections we're thinking of filming and which we'll keep as live performance.
Over-all, I think this was a really productive day and that everyone's contribution of idea's, on how we'll develop this play, were really great.

Project Diary: Nautical Cross-stitch Pillowcase
Greeting from the Hobby Hole! (As a side, it quite literally is a “hole”. My hobby “room” is a space in my basement behind my furnace).
Anyway - have you ever scrambled for a personalized crafted gift for a loved one and not known what exactly would work? My mom is a January birthday which makes it hard to find her something as a birthday gift when I just finished stressing out and scrambling for an appropriate Christmas one. This year, I have made the decision that nothing says “I love and appreciate you” more than something I’ve toiled over and stressed about. So I’ve gone the homemade gift route!
My parents have finally meandered into retirement and have made the decision that they would live by the beach 6-ish months out of the year; specifically when there are copious amounts of snow on the ground and the rest of us are stuck in the cold. In light of this decision, I thought a nautical-themed pillowcase would be a great addition to their Carolina-room.
Like most crafters, I know how to sew but I don’t actually own a sewing machine. (Something to add to my list of wants/needs). This means that any sewing activities I engage in require careful, hand-stitched attempts. With it being the end of December and my mom’s birthday fast approaching, I came to the conclusion that any attempt I made to hand sew a pillowcase would take too long and would mean I couldn’t devote the amount of time I needed to cross stitch the pattern onto the actual pillow. So, IKEA to the rescue!
Instead of sewing a pillowcase, I bought a Gurli 20x20" (50x50cm) white pillowcase (on sale - $4.99!) as the base of my project. A little more difficult to work with because the pillowcase is actually not in pieces like it would be if I made it but still manageable enough.
If you decide to go this route - just remember - make sure you only stitch one side otherwise you’ll stitch your pillowcase closed. (Not gonna lie - I thought I had actually done this when I first started. It was a false alarm, thank goodness).
The second step was to find a pattern. (Thank you Pinterest). I selected something from CrossStitcher June 2015 - “All at Sea”.
The image was kind of blurry which led me to Zinio where you can purchase the individual magazine issue.
One of the other things I liked about this particular pattern was that there weren’t that many colors required so the cost of the DMC floss was very reasonable.
Tumblr media
The pattern I selected was really meant to be made into wall art and was not even close to the size of my pillowcase. (My bad - I misread the pattern thinking it would fit, not realizing the pattern size was in metric while I had looked at the imperial size of my pillowcase). Time for a little ingenuity!
Instead of making the pattern as is, I improvised and started shifting the pattern around. (I also totally miscentered the pattern on the pillowcase, so even if I had followed the pattern to the letter, it would have looked lopsided. Moral of this side note: always measure twice before jumping into the stitching!)
Since the pattern was built around the idea of “patchwork”, shifting the pattern around wasn’t too difficult. I also realized I wasn’t too fond of the choice of pattern for the writing or location of the saying of the pattern although I really do like the saying “every day is a new adventure”. Given that I had made the pattern my own at this point, what was one more change?
Now the question was how I was going to get the pattern from the image to the actual pillowcase. I invested in some tear-away Aida 14 cloth which is available at most craft stores (you can also use the soluble type of Aida cloth if you would prefer). I basically tacked this onto the front of my pillowcase and voila - you now have a working grid which can be pulled away when complete.
For those of you that can’t find the tear-away or soluble Aida cloth, regular Aida works just as well - I have tested this theory. Just make sure your stitches aren’t too tight and I recommend investing in a pair of tweezers when tugging otherwise it’s a special endeavor to remove the Aida.
I am now in progress with stitching the pattern and looking for some different alphabet patterns on Pinterest.

Performed my first illustration using sewing it came out well. Although I am creating a metal bird so sewing won’t be very effective.
I really like the last illustration of the bird.
Last note will be that I need to re consider what my book will look like. I was recommended a book whose pages slowly fold into a bird.

I wasn’t lying in the last post I made here, I’ve spent the past month filming bits of my life and after about 6/7 days of editing, I’ve finally finished the first of the 12 I plan to create. I’m super proud of this.

First day of term 2 and I have been tasked with creating a book on a object. My object is a metal bird.
The image above was produced by me miss understanding the task.
One of my ideas for this week is to create a book showing illustration about creating the bird but present it as something else (like how to cook a fish).

Week Fourteen: 21st March
Unfortunately, we found out today that we couldn't do an evening preformance in front of our parents and friends, as the college couldn't stay open late enough for us. So we got ready to do just one preformance in front of the students doing preforming arts.
In the morning, I collected the pictures for the powerpoint that would run in the background for our preformance. Some of the images were already collected and decided on, so it didn't take me too long to complete.
For the rest of the morning, we basically practise the play over and over again to make sure that the running order was smooth and all the props were in the correct order of being on stage. After a couple of times running through the play, everything seemed to be running smoothly. There were only a couple of hiccups with props not going on quick enough, but that was easily fixed.
After lunch, we got back into costume and ready to be able to preform in front of the students for 2 o'clock. Apart from the fact that the play finished a lot earlier then it should of, (seeing as the college's students interpreted one of Joe's acts as the final scene) everything went really smoothly. I was so incredibly nervous about my monologue, and under the pressure of people watching, I completely forgot half of my monologue and had to make something up on the spot. It made me realise that I love being apart of the preformance, but not for a preforming role. I enjoyed working behind the scenes with the filming and with the choosing of sound effects.
I'll go into more depth with my evalution of the preformance, but over all: it was a really good preformance and I loved being apart of it.
