Words swam before Xunfeng's eyes. If only they'd stop wriggling, he could pin down their meaning! Fresh light spilling from the lantern set on the desk beside his work sent them darting away as his eyes were drawn to the motion.

Strong arms embraced him. Gratefully, Xunfeng slumped into their steady hold, the weight of his crown braced on braided leather armor. He pressed his aching eyes into the constant warmth of Shangque's throat. The dragon general rumbled soothingly.

"It is late, Your Highness."

"The trade agreements..." Xunfeng protested half-heartedly.

"Nothing moves until His Highness commands it. They will wait until morning."

Xunfeng knew that. But everyday, it felt like he fell further and further behind. So much needed to be done, even after peace had been firmly established through great sacrifice. His chest seized for a moment and he pressed himself further into Shangque's hold. His dragon tightened his arms around him. Secure. Safe.

"I don't know how he could read reports and inquiries all day, and then still read novels in his free time," Xunfeng grumbled. Petty jealousy was an easier emotion than the yawning abyss of grief.

Shangque laughed and pet his hair. The slight rocking motion of his shoulders unspooled some tension in Xunfeng's back. "And he would read them so swiftly! It always impressed me. He would send me to fetch more volumes to read every week on the campaign trail, when he had finished his current stack."

Xunfeng chuckled, until it broke on a jaw-popping yawn. Shangque tutted and urged him to stand. Together, they walked the short distance to his rooms. Xunfeng blearily watched clouds move across the face of the moon as Shangque reverently stripped the robes of Moon Supreme from his body. A great sigh of relief escaped both of them when the crown was lifted and set onto its holder.

Crawling into bed, peeled from the shell of responsibility, the man who was Xunfeng curled into the welcome hollows of the man who was Shangque. Their kiss was warm, welcoming, familiar, and the last tension drained from his body. He let Shangque arrange him however he wished. His eyes slid closed as talon-tipped fingers massaged through his hair.

"How are the children?" he mumbled. He did not want to sleep yet. They barely spent enough time together.

With his ear pressed to Shangque's chest, many of his words were lost in a soothing rumble. Xunfeng caught enough of the happy stories of Jieli teaching the orphans math to ask follow-up questions in the morning, but despite his best attempts, he slipped into sleep between one breath and the next.

Summary
