blinded by your light (you fill up the room)

a fill for @cljprompts. AKA a fic I never intended to be as long as it was, but I was having too much fun. I even had to get some art for the occasion ;)

“Zhuren…” the woman greets, “it’s me! Firefly Spirit Stone! I cultivated my body, aren’t you happy?” Firefly Spirit Stone? Reflexively, he reaches for his belt, where the Firefly Spirit Stone always hangs. Sure enough, he feels the familiar tassel, the knotted rope, and the stone itself. The stone is still there—smooth to the touch and teardrop-shaped. It feels the way it always does between his fingers whenever he plays with it unconsciously, but something has changed. It feels… empty. Hurriedly, he glances down. The stone is still there, right where it should be, but it doesn’t have the same sparkle as before. It’s just a plain blue stone now, pale and patterned and lifeless. The firefly is gone. Or, Changheng wakes in Lucheng with a visitor.

For WIP Wednesday, here's two short little snippets for this fic I'm writing based on a prompt (@cljprompts) with Changheng and the Firefly Stone. I think I'm getting close to the end and I can post it soon. Maybe.

Long ago, Changheng had intended for the Firefly Spirit Stone to be Xiao Lanhua’s. He had orchestrated everything, from the first time Xiao Lanhua picked the stone off the forest floor, to the afternoon he secretly released a tiny firefly before Siming Hall. From beginning to end, he had done his best to give her this gift. It had seemed that the firefly wanted to stay with her, too, by the way her light pulsated in protest when Xiao Lanhua attempted to return the stone. But after the affair with Yulin, the Firefly Stone seemed to accept him. Perhaps she understood it was safer for everyone like this. Luckily, times have changed. Now, everyone can be put back in their proper place.

“It’s just…" he begins. "Considering you were the master she chose all those years ago, I thought you’d want to teach her." “Me?" Xiao Lanhua dismisses. "No—I have too much to do. Between rebuilding the clan and running affairs in Cangyan Sea… how would I have time for a disciple? Besides, the Firefly Spirit Stone has been yours for some time. If she didn’t like you, she wouldn’t have stayed in the stone. I suspect she didn’t allow herself to be given all those years ago because she knew what you wanted. I think she’d always chosen you as her master.”

I'm bringing another Wip Wednesday snippet today. This is for a fill from @cljprompts. No idea when it'll be posted, but I've been enjoying working on it alongside my other wips!

For context: Changheng wakes up to an unfamiliar visitor.

“Firefly Spirit Stone!” the woman explains. “I cultivated my body, aren’t you happy?” Firefly Spirit Stone? Reflexively, he reaches for his belt, where the Firefly Spirit Stone always hangs. Sure enough, he feels the familiar tassel, the knotted rope, the stone itself. The stone is still there, smooth to the touch, teardrop-shaped. It feels the way it always does between his fingers, but something is changed. It feels… empty. Hurriedly, he unties the stone. The stone is still there, but it doesn’t have the same sparkle as before. It’s just a plain blue stone now, pale and patterned and lifeless. The firefly is gone. His eyes drift up to the woman, still kneeling on the bed, beaming down at him. Her eyes are big, alert. Her mouth is quirked into an eager smile. He has never seen this face before, but something about her does seem familiar. Despite the situation, he feels strangely at ease. He does not feel as he should, having woken with a strange person in bed with him. He untangles himself from the sheets and stands up to get a better look at her. The spirit takes this as a cue to launch herself into his arms. Changheng catches her easily, though he does take a step backwards in surprise. The woman clings to him, burying her face in his neck with a squeal of excitement. At his belt, he feels the stone reawaken with recognition. Perhaps it really is as she says. “Firefly Spirit Stone,” he repeats. “I knew you’d recognize me, zhuren!” she exclaims, snuggling even closer. “Now, you won’t ever be alone again—I’ll accompany you forever!”

Here is a sneak peek of my new fic! It's from the first chapter of the @cljprompts that I claimed. I will hopefully start publishing tomorrow, so be on the lookout!

For now it is strangely quiet. Nearing the end of the business day, his phone is actually silent and his email is organized into what can be done later. So he decides there is no better time and picks up the red envelope that Shangque had prepared for him. After all, from what he understood he would get to set the parameters of their meetings, and if things didn't work out then he could just write a check and forget the entire business. Her name is Xiao Lanhua. She owns a business called the Arbiter, which is by reference and appointment only. Apparently in Shangque's search for alternative stress management, her name kept coming up in the circles of the elite. A candid picture is included, but the sunglasses and hat she wears obscures most of her features. There is a background check that is clean and a run down of her known addresses, an apartment and her studio, and a few notes on recommendations from other clients. He turns to a profile on the business, his brows raising slightly. Dongfang is aware of the nature of her work, but this is surprising. First is a list of preparatory items, questions to think about and be ready to answer at their first appointment. He reads through them with a half-smirk on his face. What is your threshold for pain? Do you find pleasure in service? How many sexual partners have you had? He tosses the folder back on his desk with a huff. Maybe this is a mistake.
