Phanes Ruler of the Zodiac Phanes is the Greek primordial god of procreation and the generation of new life. In the Greek myths, Phanes is portrayed as being a deity emerging from a cosmic egg, entwined with a serpent. He had a helmet and broad, golden wings. Time, who is also called Aion, created the silver egg of the universe, in which hatches the first-born, Phanes. Earlier Greek myths show that Phanes was believed to have been hatched from the World-Egg of Chronos and Ananke or Nyx in the black bird form and wind. He was called Protogenus by his older wife Nyx. According to Aristophanes, where he is called Eros, he was born from an egg created by Nyx and placed in the boundless lap of Erebus. He then mates with Chaos which led to creation of the birds. This passage states that the birds are considered older than all other living creatures, even older than the other gods.

I am not sure if someone else has asked, but do you have any hcs for Phanes? In Orphic he's the first one to come from the cosmic egg, androgynous with two snakes and sometimes Nyx is his daughter. Danke!

hiii sorry for the wait!! hope this is okay: 

Phanes means “to bring light” and generally he was thought of as a good deity

so i imagine him to be a Baldr-type character where he’s pretty much universally loved and cherished

Phanes emerges from the cosmic egg that Chronos (not Cronus the titan!) and Ananke (”necessity”) create so i suppose that in this version of the creation of the universe, Chronos and Ananke are the first gods...

or perhaps they aren’t really sentient beings at all and are closer to Chaos, in that they are sort of “dormant” and not actively awake to walk and talk.

in some versions of the myth, the cosmic egg that Phanes emerges from is created by Nyx, but i personally prefer it being made by Chronos and Ananke because it reminds of the saying “necessity is the mother of all inventions”.. the story gives a literal take on that phrase and i think the imagery is really awesome ^-^

there are also versions where Phanes is the husband of Nyx, and in these myths, he goes by the name “Protogenus” which means “first-born” so if we were to fit Phanes into Hesiod’s traditional description of the creation of the universe, then i’d put down Phanes as being the first living, walking, talking, moving, sentient being to emerge from Chaos.

but otherwise, solely sticking with the Orphic tradition, i imagine Phanes to be a very wise and kind god

i think he retains his youth although he’s actually pretty much the oldest being in the universe

and i say this because he’s meant to be the god of procreation and new life- he is eternally youthful to represent the vitality of life

the idea of Nyx as his wife is interesting to me because this follows the usual pattern in many other cultures’ myths where day and night are represented as spouses.. 

in Hesiod’s tradition, Nyx and Erebus are a couple, but they aren’t opposites of each other- they are night and darkness as opposed to night and day so that’s just something i think is intriguing, and i know it’s not a headcanon but i thought it was worth mentioning ^-^

i said before that Phanes was a “wise” god, and i’m saying that because in the myths, he’s described as the first king- the first ruler of the universe before Zeus, Cronus and Ouranos.. and i’d like to think that he was a role model, and idealic king that all future kings would look to for inspiration when they themselves ruled.

anyways, all in all, i think Phanes would have been a very gracious and honourable god- always smiling and laughing and imparting good counsel on those who sought it ^-^
