It's the same weak argument as always, one I've discussed many times before. Except this time, it’s really grasping at straws. Ariel isn’t an anthropologist who "studies" humans, she’s a geeky collector of things she doesn’t actually understand. It’s not the same.

And, as I’ve said before, it’s still not a strong argument because, once again, if I erase the entire movie up until Ariel rescues Eric, the plot doesn’t change at all. Her collection has no impact on the storyline or her time on land. Practically, Ariel’s entire journey revolves around Eric, and even as a human, she becomes way more physically dependent. It took me years as a kid to realize this—I actually liked Ariel more as a mermaid than as a human but couldn’t quite explain why. Over time, I realized that, even at the script level, Ariel is pretty useless and even boring as a human. She loses a lot of spark, independence, and even physical dynamism or body language that she recovers in the right moment she becomes a mermaid again.

But anyway, it’s the same argument every time. People cling to Ariel’s prior obsession with humans, which, in practice, is irrelevant since throughout her contract with Ursula, Ariel is tempted solely with the prince. Neither Flotsam, Jetsam, Ursula, nor Ariel herself ever mention that Ariel is going to escape the water by any other means than through Eric. I mean, literally, Flotsam and Jetsam convince her by throwing Eric’s stone face ( which also leads to the fact that Ariel didn't cry for her cave until Eric's statue was destroyed, this script is just bad) at her—what more proof is needed? And this scene is even worse in the live-action film (everything in general is worse there, even though it’s twice as long, unbelievably), where Ariel has the personality of a cardboard cutout, and Ursula practically eats up all the dialogue and forces her out of the water while Ariel has a perpetual 😐 face, it’s hilarious.

Or there’s the second overused argument: "Triton is a fool and a bully who destroyed her cave." So, the king of the sea destroyed a cave full of potentially dangerous human artifacts accumulated illegally under his nose for years by his own daughter, the crazy human supremacist. What else is there to say? Aside this being a very over the top moment in the script to demonize Triton and makes us feel sorry for Ariel in a cheap way, his attitude is not far from anything that many, many people would have done. Many apocalyptic stories start with characters who have Ariel’s attitude, lol.
