Jude: Gotta real sinister look on yer face, whadda ya up to?

Kate: Heeheehee……I just think you look adorable, Jude.

Jude: What’s with the shady laugh?

Kate: Don’t criticize the way people laugh.

His expression couldn’t change, but when I picked Jude up, I knew he was looking at me suspiciously.

Kate: Jude. When I was a kid, I loved tying ribbons to my stuffed toys.

He was lowered onto the edge of the desk, looked up at me and made a low voice.

Jude: Oy, wait.

I took a small box from the shelf and opened it.

The box contained colorful ribbons. I picked up a few and showed them to him with a bright smile.

Kate: Which do you like?

He made hoarse noise as he stood up and tried to step back.

Jude:…..Dont’cha dare.

But he stopped when he realized the position he was in.

I smiled even more when I saw Jude standing on the edge of the desk, where he would fall if he took just one step.

Kate: Maybe this deep purple ribbon? Ah, this one is nice too!

Jude: Yer the worst.

Kate: It's nothing compared to what you usually do to me.

Jude: Hmph, yer the one who enjoys bein’ bullied.

Kate: Well, let’s table that for now…..

Jude: Let’s not.

I clear my throat and pick up the deep purple ribbon.

Kate: It’s not a big deal, it’s just a little ribbon.

Jude: Ya can’t be serious— Oy!

Catching Jude as he tries to escape, I place the ribbon around the back of his head, bring up both ends at the top of his head and tie them off—

(Oh, soooo cute…!)

The Jude doll is now complete with a ribbon tied on him.

Jude: ……This's the worst.

He looked so cute just sitting there while looking the other way, that I had to use both hands to cover my grinning.

Jude: Satisfied now? Lemme down.

Kate: Oh, I want to tie this frilly ribbon around your neck too.

The moment I picked up the pretty, white frilly ribbon, Jude stood up and lost his balance.

Kate: Be careful!

I quickly picked him up so he wouldn’t get hurt, but he was flailing around in my lap.

Jude: Are ya kiddin’ me, why do I gotta wear some frilly arse ribbons?

Kate: Please don’t move so much, it’s dangerous.

Jude resisted with all his might, refusing to wear the frilly ribbon, so I held him down.

That’s when—

Kate: Waah!

Suddenly, smoke billows in front of me and my lap becomes heavy.

After blinking several times, my vision finally cleared and I met Jude's eyes.

Jude: Huh…..?

Kate: Y-you changed back already?

Jude open and closed his hand several times to confirm that he really changed back, and the sighed haggardly.

Jude: ‘Twas down right awful….Don’t ever wanna go through that again.

Jude: The hell’s with turnin’ into a stuffed toy. Betcha that quack doc mixed dodgy stuff into our food again.

Jude: Thanks to that, I went through a right mess. Should go ‘n give him a good kick fer it.

Jude got up from straddling my lap, and started grumbling about Roger again—

Kate: Ppfff-

Jude: Hm?

I couldn't help but laugh because on Jude’s head….

Kate: Jude, you're wearing a cute ribbon.……

The purple ribbon he was wearing as a stuffed toy was still tied on top of his head.

The long ribbon fits perfectly now that he’s back to its normal size, with a beautiful bow sitting on top his head.

Jude: …….

I clutch my stomach, unable to handle this unusual sight of Jude.

Without altering his expression, he untied the ribbon—

Jude: Princess, hold up yer hands.

Kate: ? Sure.

I did as I was told and stuck them out, and in a flash my hands were bound tightly together with the ribbon.

Kate: Ah.

Jude: Real good job ya did earlier.

Kate: Well, uhhh~…..

He looked down at me with a crooked smile, and when I averted my gaze, he instantly carried me away….

Kate: WOAH!!

Jude: I’ll turn ya into a dress-up doll too, but…..

I was surprised when he threw me on the bed, and he immediately hovered over me—

Jude: ‘Fore that, we gotta strip off all yer clothes, yeah?

It didn't end with just taking off my clothes, I was tormented more severely than usual.

And I decided that if he ever turned into a stuffed doll again, I would definitely dress him up in frilly clothes.

thinking about martys relationship with his father and the doc. about how the george marty grew up with was terrified of rejection and never put himself or his work out there for fear of contempt and criticism. about how doc is always and forever fearless in his pursuits, throwing every little thing at the wall to see what sticks because he knows the one little thing that does is going to make it all worth it, even if everyone around him thinks hes a quack. about how marty will do anything to prove hes not chicken, not like his father, but has to be goaded into doing so, never taking the first step himself, exactly like his father. about how marty and doc, so starkly contrasted at first glance in all ways, share the same desire to be known and seen, to create something new and shiny, the likes of which have never been seen or heard before.

Out of all the hermits, only 5 people know how to do first aid without relying on potions. Healing Potions are useful in a pinch, but over using them is advised against, as they have the adverse effect of weakening your immune system.

Xisuma and his twin lived a hard life in the past, causing them to have to learn how to patch themselves up to not die of an infection or bleed out. They are extremely by the books, and always carry proper first aid kits in their armour. They make sure to replenish it monthly and keep track of the expiration dates.

Gem has always been confrontational and curious about the world, so to keep on fighting and exploring, she learned natural remedies and anatomy to keep herself going. She’s more akin to a war medic, where she often has to improvise her tools, such as tearing her clothes to use as bandages. She’s the one people go to if they are sick as she always keeps a stock of medicinal herbs on hand. She can’t beat Etho’s ass if he’s dead, y’know?

Doc is a master of cybernetics and prosthetic limbs. Due to a series of accidents that left him severely wounded, he used his redstone knowledge to construct cybernetics for himself. He’s even got a cybernetic heart. He believes everyone should get cybernetics to become better at their jobs and make their day to day lives easier. He and Zedaph are the only ones qualified enough to give surgeries.

Zedaph is a quack surgeon. He doesn’t have any kind of certification nor did he actually go to a university to study, but he just… innately knows how to perform surgeries on people, from heart to neurosurgery. However, he has a habit of “improving” others without asking, such as giving them several hearts or an extra brain. According to him, a revived someone who was decapitated by transplanting all their organs into their head and throwing the rest away.

Me and my sister watched TDTEBU in the theater based on your recommendation! She's a really good artist and I showed her your analysis of The Dover Boys and she loved it, she literally said while we were driving to the theater "well if that person thinks this is good, i gotta trust them." AND YOU HAVE COME TO THE EXACT RIGHT PERSON! DO I EVER! i'm going to throw a lot of stuff at you that may seem overwhelming at first, so PLEASE don't be! it's just to give you a lot of options. there's no right or wrong way to enjoy the series, and i know it's intimidating to get into, especially since there's not really a right way TO do that. but i'm just gonna tell ya what worked for me.

first thing's first, some friends and i in an animation server made a "30....+1 Essential Looney Tunes" list, inspired by going back and forth and asking for everyone's opinion. THIS IS ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE. there may be some shorts on here that make you go "why is that on here?" (which truthfully i feel about a few choices here too HAHA, but, if it at all helps, i enjoy every single cartoon listed.) this isn't an end-all be-all list, i'm sure people reading this are like "i'd nominate ______ instead!", but it's a starting point. these are listed chronologically, but you can watch in whichever order you like. i'm personally noting shorts that i ESPECIALLY love with a *, if that's any sort of additional help, too! bolded shorts are top of the crop shorts, included in my top 5 favorite cartoons ever made. again, entirely subjective! and each short has a link to where you can view it. so, without further ado:

now, how I got into LT is a bit more scattered, but i think is worth replicating here too, in case that's also helpful. so here was my path:

there are several convergent paths that amounted to where i am now. one of them was catching a batch of shorts on Boomerang since i had nothing else going on--this really kickstarted my interest and is truly how i got into it. i was very impressed with the animation and how fluid it was, and was impressed at how old some of the shorts were ("this came out in 1953?? that's ancient!" <- now 1953 shorts feel so new and modern to me!). loved the humor, the music, the characters--this was how i knew i wanted to get into it more.

another path was that i was looking up Scott Bradley scores on YT, who was the composer of the Tom & Jerry shorts. someone in the comments of a video mentioned Carl Stalling's work for LT, and i looked him up. came across a compilation of his scores from the Depression-era, and saw someone in the comments give a timestamp to a cue used in a short called Porky's Romance. directly go to the timestamp, am absolutely floored by how gorgeous the harmonies are, and decide to look up the short. am amazed at how old the short is, that it's in black and white, that Porky used to be actually fat (I ❤️ FAT PORKY), and was amazed at how CYNICAL the cartoon was (Porky attempts suicide because his girlfriend rejected his marriage proposal!!!!)--this was so unlike anything i had seen before that i HAD to see more. Porky's now my second favorite cartoon character of all time, and very narrowly behind Daffy for first.

BUT MY MAIN PATH WAS THIS. i knew a little bit about the LT directors before getting into the shorts, but not much. Bob Clampett was a name i wanted to look out for, and so after catching one of his shorts in the Boomerang run and being blown away, i had to see more. my main foray into LT was by watching every single Bob Clampett short chronologically. i looked up his filmography and just went from there. this is a pretty unconventional method and i don't know how much i'd recommend it to other people, but he's still my favorite cartoonist of all time and i'm a VERY loud champion of his earliest shorts that are sorely overlooked, so it did something right!

i didn't just stick to his shorts, though. i kind of "spidered" around--it was clear Porky and Daffy were becoming some of my favorite characters, so i'd see screenshots of their shorts on YouTube or people talking about them in my search for more LT stuff, go "that looks interesting," and watch it. so i had my main Clampett run of shorts, and was also sort of just splintering off and letting the winds take me where i wanted. i would recommend paying attention to the credits, and if you keep seeing a director's name pop up on the shorts you like best, look into his filmography and go from there! find what you like!

a few months into this, i decided to watch every single Porky short chronologically as well, as i was curious about his history. this, in turn, got me more interested in some of the older and undiscovered shorts, and a month or so later, i decided to watch every single cartoon chronologically, writing reviews about them as a way to incentivize me through.

obviously, my review operation got so much more complex, and it was clear i was churning them out for obligation purposes, so i just sort of went at my own pace. it took me a few years, but i have since seen all 1,000+ cartoons! this isn't something i really recommend with my full chest, because it's a LOT and there's a lot that deserves to be left in the past. but i will say that seeing every single short has vastly bolstered my understanding and knowledge and love of these cartoons and the figures behind it. i feel like i know just so much more, i can appreciate things so much more, i can appreciate them in their proper context, etc.

and this is also where i come in with the "these shorts are nearly 100 years old, and reflect the attitudes of 100 years ago" statement. i'm sure it's a given at this point, but i still do feel it necessary to warn that, yes, a lot of these cartoons are racist, misogynistic, ableist, homo/transphobic, etc, etc. i know it feels silly to say that about these shorts but i do feel responsible to say that it's out there and, unfortunately, it's not as easy as "oh, these are the racist ones, just skip them" because there's unfortunately a lot of overlap. even some of the cartoons on this list have some unfortunate moments in them, off the top of my head being Porky in Wackyland, Book Revue and Mouse Menace, but i'm certain there are more. i still think these cartoons are worth watching. but they're reflections of their time, and deserve to be treated as such. it's actually been incredibly fascinating to learn about through an anthropologist perspective, discovering where some of these stereotypes are born, how people reacted against them at the time (there was more pushback than you may have imagined--i know Chuck Jones was rather uncomfortable with the racism, though he still of course has his name attached to some pretty racist gags and shorts..) i'm not here to finger wag or anything, especially since my opinion on this means absolutely nothing at the end of the day as i'm not afflicted by these stereotypes, but i just do feel the need to mention them. i think the shorts are still very much worth watching, and it's interesting and illuminating to learn about the history of some of these prejudices. but i do just feel the need to stress that for absolute transparency. these shorts are a product of their time, which is a huge source of intrigue for me, but can also be an exceptionally heavy burden. soapboxing over!

other recommendations i'd give are @kaiserbeamz' EXCELLENT series on the history of the franchise, the videos are very well researched, and very engaging but also easy enough to watch just the same (i say that because i'm very picky with video essays and tend not to watch many because i'm either annoyed by presentation or something as unfair as the sound of someone's voice, which i know is awful.. but that's all the more reason why i recommend their videos, because they pass my test! and i'm not just saying that because i'm credited in them, thanks KB!!)

CartoonLogic is a great podcast that has many episodes dedicated to analyzing LT shorts by some of the most knowledgeable historians around. i also give a big shoutout to my buddy @baxterfilms, who's done an incredible amount of research on these films for years. subscribe to his Patreon! read his articles on Cartoon Research!

Frank Young has a brilliant blog on the history of Tex Avery's WB cartoons, which was a monumental help for my own reviews of his shorts and a resource i relied on for years.

as for book recommendations, Michael Barrier's Hollywood Cartoons book is required reading for anyone looking to get into the history of golden age cartoons in general. incredibly well researched, has plenty of interviews with the people who made these shorts, and is essentially the bible for golden age cartoons. i also recommend Keith Scott's books on the unsung heroes of voice acting in these cartoons. Jaime Weinman's book on the history of LT shorts has a more personal analysis angle that's absolutely wonderful too, and incredibly illuminating.

and, not to toot my own horn, but i will toot my own horn by linking my LT Review Blog (though it sounds like you're already aware of it!) just because it covers every single cartoon chronologically. do be mindful that the further you go back, the less elucidated the reviews get HAHA.. it's an operation that has exploded out of my hands in the best way possible. i didn't know what i was doing at all when i first started (and was writing for Tumblr, where the limits were stronger and i was much more relaxed), so there's that as well.

BUT THAT'S IT! i know that's a lot, so please don't feel too overwhelmed! there are a lot of places to start, and there's no right or wrong way TO start. but i hope this can at least give you some ideas or be a helpful resource!! thanks so much for the incredibly kind message!!

What Silly Creature

Note: gosh I'm a bit late. Sorry. I ment to post this hours ago I just randomly fell asleep. Anyway this is apart of the Orb factory. You may not understand everything. This is also on ao3!

The ride on the bus or was it a train? False wasn’t sure, she was told that it was a bus by Xisuma. It was bumpy. The sudden stops, and the world going by. It was very strange nothing like she experienced before even when she was tiny. This time when the bus stopped, Xisuma motioned them to follow him, and they got out of the strange vehicle.

Outside was very different from where they started. There were huge buildings towering over them, and lots of people walking around, coming in and out of buildings with signs.It reminded False of the shop district.

The other hermits also looked confused, everyone but Grin and Xisuma. “We need to figure out where we are going next,” he says.

”We should go to the bank.” Grian suggested, “I know a couple of things there.” Xiuma nodded. “My father was one of the people to work there.”

”All right, Grian and I will go to the bank to figure out what we are doing. and..Doc you're in charge, make sure no one wanders off.” Xisuma gestures to Grian and the two walk away.

False wasn’t sure what a bank was but whatever it was, it must've been important.

Quack! False jumps at the sudden noise, what was that? False looked around, the other hermits didn’t notice, she then looked down to see a strange chicken-like creature. They made that same noise again. She bends down to look closer at them. They had a green dark head and many feathers. They rubbed their beak against her leg like Scar’s cat did often.

What strange creature, she pets the animal, not exactly sure if she’s supposed to. Sitting down with the duck who quacks again and walks in circles around her.

What a silly creature. She glanced up seeing more, there was a whole flock of the silly creatures. Some of them were even in the water using their webbed feet to paddle in the water. She had never seen this type of animal before but she was amazed. The creatures quacked at each other, swimming in circles around each other. Some shook their feathers off as they left the water.

What silly little creatures.

Maternity Ward part 2

Part One

Salim had been working the maternity ward for almost two years now, and quickly learned it was best to allow couples to settle when they were admitted. Adjustment times varied, but an hour seemed like it gave them long enough to relax and familiarize themselves with the room. He smiled thinking of his newest patients, the Kolcheks. The father in particular acted frazzled, barely able to speak. Salim looked forward to helping them.

He entered their room and found that the two of them already made themselves comfortable. The blinds were pulled up to allow sunlight into the room. A radio was set on the bedside table. The couple were each armed with a soda, and they were chatting while playing cards.

“Hey, doc!” Penny greeted him. “Want Jason to deal you in?” At the sound of his name, Jason tensed. He turned to look at Salim then quickly snapped his eyes back to his cards. Salim reassessed the man: maybe he was just shy.

“Maybe later,” Salim said. “I wanted to see how you were doing. May I?” He gestured to Penny meaningfully. She shrugged and set her cards aside. Salim pulled on some gloves before approaching her. Jason shot to his feet and scooted out of the way. “Not a fan of hospitals?” Salim asked him sympathetically.

“No. I mean, I just figured to give you room.”

“Thank you, that was considerate.” Salim gave him a smile. Jason's ears turned pink and he looked away. The shyness was sweet; Salim would have to think of a way to put the man at ease. For now, he focused on his patient. “Could you walk me through your latest contraction, Penny?”

She was more than happy to do so. She described how it felt, leaving a significant pause that Jason filled in with the duration. Salim shot him an encouraging look.

“It sounds like things are progressing well,” he remarked. “You have more hours ahead of you, so be sure to keep hydrated and fed. The food provided at the hospital cafeteria is decent, though you're allowed to order out. I'll be checking in with you frequently, but of course you are welcome to call me if you have any questions or problems.”

“How many more?” Penny wondered. She cradled the underside of her belly.

“It's hard to say; it can be anywhere from twelve to twenty-four hours for a first birth.”

“Holy shit,” Jason gaped.

“That's why it's encouraged for you to stay active, and rest when you can,” Salim explained. “Now, I usually like to discuss this before the labor becomes too intense: do you want to have a natural birth?”

“Fuck no!” Penny burst out. “Do what you gotta to make this easier.”

“All right,” Salim agreed, chuckling. His gaze shifted over to Jason again. The man was rocking back and forth on his heels. “You look like you could use some air,” Salim noted. “How about you and I walk down the hall for a bit?”

“Uh.” Jason's ears turned red again. “Okay.”

“She's very spirited,” Salim said.

“Yeah. She's always been like that.” Jason fell into step beside Salim. “So how long you been a baby doctor?”

“I've worked at the maternity ward for about two years. It never stops being a miracle.” He reached out to pat Jason on the shoulder. “Don't worry, my friend. Your family is in good hands.”

“Uh. Yeah.” The blush had spread to Jason's face.

“Would you like to hear a joke?” Salim offered. When Jason didn't answer, Salim told it anyway: “Do you know why ducks can't be doctors? They're all quacks.”

“Wow.” Jason let out a snort, his lips cracking into a smile. “That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.”

“You still laughed at it,” Salim pointed out. Jason's smile grew a little more.

“I didn't say I didn't like it.”

Salim was more than happy to tell him more jokes. He liked seeing Jason laugh. By the time they got back to Penny's room, that initial shyness from Jason was gone. Jason caught his eye and smiled before taking position next to Penny.

Salim almost didn't want to leave.

i was also just made aware recently that there’s a good possibility it’s a Snow White reference?? i never caught this until someone sent this screenshot! which, since Snow White is one of Bob Clampett’s favorite movies and Daffy has already referenced Dopey once before (he does the Dopey gallop from Heigh Ho in The Daffy Doc!) makes sense… and Doc stutters!

but it’s just SO CUTE i’ve always been stricken by how sincerely it’s played, especially since all other examples of this gag/line (Daffy says it again in another short, You Were Never Duckier, also a favorite) have been so much less sincere or having the characters react in disgust.. it’s special to me!!
