As I'm doing a rags-to-riches challenge atm for gen 3 of my Random Legacy, I've been looking into mods that make the off-grid experience in TS3 a bit more realistic

I hope this list will be especially useful as a resource for anyone doing rags-to-riches, runaway teen, midnight sun, zombie apocalypse or any other similar challenge which requires your sim to live off the land - I personally love this gameplay style, and I hope this is useful for others too!

As always, if anyone has any suggestions of mods / CC I should add to this list, let me know and I'll update it - it's definitely not exhaustive by any means :)

Mods:

Moar Interactions by Buzzler on MTS

I recommend this mod regardless of if you're playing off-the-grid because it adds a bunch of great stuff, but the interactions particularly useful for this gameplay style are 'work overtime' at the small businesses around town, allowing your sim to earn a bit of extra cash without being officially employed, and also the ability to 'cancel the carpool / schoolbus' (because a carpool wouldn't agree to pick your sim up from their camp in the middle of the woods)

Nraas Careers via Nraas Industries

This mod allows your teen / child sims to be enrolled in home-schooling, which makes much more sense if they're living as a runaway - tutorial for how to assign them to homeschooling is here - I also reccomend using storyprogression to disable curfew for your teen sims if you're playing them as a runaway (tutorial here)

Nraas GoHere via Nraas Industries

This might be a bit random - but this mod is an abseloute lifesaver if your sim doesn't have a car, you can force them to walk long distances without automatically getting in a taxi (best used when combined with the taxi charge mod - linked below)

One with Nature by Spherefish on MTS

This mod is basically the GOAT for off-grid gameplay - it adds the ability to sleep on the floor, pee on the floor, have sponge baths in the ocean / swimming pool and also to relax / daydream on the ground

Pay for the gym by ani on MTS

Some people won't like this one as it definitely makes runaway / rags-to-riches challenges a lot more challenging, but in combination with the other mods I think it makes sense to charge for hot showers when your sim could just go for a wild swim instead!

No Fridge Shopping via Nraas Industries

No more magically buying ingredients from the fridge - your off-grid sim has to grow the produce themselves or go to the supermarket if they want to cook!

Taxi Charge & Subway Charge on MTS

Challenges such as runaway teen require you to buy a flamingo every time your sim takes a taxi - this removes that requirement as your sim gets automatically charged 6-20 simoleons depending on their age - Subway Charge does the same for your Bridgeport sims

No Stretch Children Can Series by Kapaer on MTS

I always recommend this mod for general gameplay anyway, but it's especially useful if you've got kids in your household for offgrid living, they're no longer completely useless!

Attend University online by TwinSimming on Tumblr

Similar to the homeschooling option from nraas careers (linked above), this allows your sim to attend university entirely from the comfort of their computer - they do still have to pay for the degree though!

Off-Grid Inventing Overhaul by SimState on MTS

Allows your inventor sims to create household objects through the inventing table - so you don't have to save up to buy them if your sim is crafty enough!

Ani's Various Mods

I particularly recommend the 'mountain bike' mod which allows your sims to ride a bike around without roads, as well as the 'ration box' mod & 'consignment'

Sleep on Sofa / Bench by Sammonsim on MTS

Scroll down to post #22 in this thread to get the link to this mod - it basically allows your sims to get a full nights sleep on a sofa / bench without having to queue up 50 'nap' interactions

Functional Wells / Off Grid Plumbing & Functional Washboard

This makes your sim have to collect buckets of water from a well if they want to shower / wash the dishes etc. The functional washboard allows them to wash their clothes in a less mechanical way, I reccomend using Danjaley's functional well cc in addition to the plumbing mod as it adds a few more options for your style of lot

Thanks to your mods I'm playing sims 3 again after years!!

I have 2 mod ideas

1: Do you think it's possible to make the sims walk faster?? They take like forever to walk to the other side of the room

2: Are you familiar with Carl's (try to make friends) mod for sims 4?? It's a mod that adds an interaction under the friendly category that alows the game to randomly select a friendly interaction so you don't have to chose like milions of interactions just to become friend with an npc

Since making friends takes forever in sims3 i think a mod similar to rhis would be amazing and soooo useful

Please consider making them (especially the 2nd one).it would be a true lifesaver

Hello! I don’t accept mod requests, but I do have answers regarding your ideas.

1. As far as I am aware, it’s not possible to alter a sim’s walking speed. However, if another modder wants to jump in and correct me, feel free!

2. I know some of Carl’s mods, but I’m not familiar with that one in particular. But from your description it sounds like the Moar Interactions by Buzzler on Mod The Sims. The mod includes several new handy interactions including one called “Socialize” that autonomously queues up different social interactions so you can be a bit more hands off when it comes to building (or ruining :p) sims’ relationships.

James's hand lands on her inner thigh, and suddenly Sarah can't breathe.

"Sorry," he mumbles, drawing back. "We should--"

She isn't sure how she wants that sentence to end. The two of them are quite frankly past the point of should. They should have a chaperone, regardless of father's insinuation that at 29 years old she has planted herself firmly in spinster territory. She should probably have written to James before showing up at his print shop unannounced.

James steps back from her, breathing heavily. She's pulled the ribbon out from his queue, so he has to brush his hair out of his face. His waistcoat, too, has been lost in the shuffle, and she looks appreciatively at his figure. He certainly did not look like that when they were children. She would have noticed.

"Did you -- uh--" he looks like he doesn't know what to do with his hands. Sarah resists the impulse to provide him with suggestions. "You're here."

He's taken the fact that she's turned up out of the blue to practically throw herself at him rather well, all things considered.

He glances over her shoulder, as though he'll be able to see through the curtains pulled over the windows. "Your fiancé isn't about to challenge me to a duel, is he?"

"He's not--"

"Because I won't -- I won't be a piece of entertainment for when you tire of the upper class." Her heart breaks, just the tiniest bit, at the sadness in his voice.

"He's not my fiancé," she manages. "Not anymore."

James blinks. His jaw slackens, until something shifts in his expression and he says, his voice a low whisper, "Did he hurt you? I'll--"

"No," she says forcefully. "Julian was... nice. Tolerably handsome." Financially secure, she doesn't add.

"So you just--" His Adam's apple bobs. "We should -- talk. And -- and tea. I should offer you tea. God, Sarah, I swear I have more manners than this. I'm not a rake." As if to emphasize his point, he sets about searching for her petticoat.

Logically, she knows that a conversation over tea is a completely reasonable expectation for the first meeting between two people who haven't seen each other in nearly eight years. She even has the presence of mind to marvel at the idea of James drinking tea again.

The wicked part of her wants his mouth back on hers.

"I tried," she tells him. "When we moved upstate. I tried so hard to find someone who could--" she pauses.

"Who could make you happy?" James offers.

Well, best have on with it, then. "Who could make me forget about you."

"What?" He's staring at her like she's suggested going on holiday to the moon.

Her face has to be as red as her hair. She doesn't know where she gets the courage to level him with a look and say, "Oh, come off it. You must have known."

He sputters something that she takes to be bewilderment. Eventually, he says, "I really should make you tea." And then, with a grimace, "I'm sorry about your dress."

She's fairly certain he means that her skirts and jacket are scattered across the floor. She looks him directly in the eye. "I'm not."

"I have manners," he insists. "I won't ruin you."

She looks up at him. "I'm not -- I'm not inexperienced," she says. And waits. She can't interpret his expression.

"Neither am I," he says eventually, his voice sounding strained.

"I assumed as much." She pauses. "You'll -- take precautions?"

He stares at her. "You want -- now?"

She answers him by drawing herself up onto her toes so she can kiss him again. It doesn't take him long to respond, to part her lips with his tongue.

"Upstairs," he gasps, and she nods and lets him take her hand.

She climbs onto the bed and sets to work at the laces of her stays. James kisses her, working his way down her neck to the top of her breast. She lets him help her toss the stays aside.

He'll bed her now, she reasons, anticipating the feel of him inside her. Except he doesn't move to undo his breeches. No, he's still kissing her, making his way down her stomach, one of his hands landing again on her inner thigh, his fingers dancing perilously close to her center.

"Oh," she breathes, when she grasps his intention. "You don't have to do that."

His face registers confusion. "Should I stop?"

No, her body protests. Don't you dare.

But she manages to gather the presence of mind to say, "It's just -- it'll take forever, and -- and you don't want to look at -- I mean it's -- it's unsightly--"

She feels James's fingers press into her thigh. "When we're finished, remind me to kill Julian."

"You really don't have to--"

"Sarah." His voice is practically a growl. "Let me help you come. Please."

She stares at him. Really stares, enough to register that he's being serious. Her heart feels like it's beating twice as fast as it should. A warm feeling starts to build in her abdomen, but this is plainly ridiculous. Within five minutes he'll complain that his hand is tired, and they'll be right back where they started.

Except he lowers himself down onto the ground by the foot of the bed, reaching for her legs. "Slide down. Fuck, you're beautiful."

Her knee is resting on his shoulder. She feels his hands at the place where her legs meet.

"You'll tell me what you like," he says, finally sounding at least a little bit unsure.

"Nothing might happen," she warns him.

Without missing a beat, he says, "Then I'll watch you do it. On your own."

"James!"

But he's brushing his fingers against her folds, sounding only the slightest bit smug when he says, incredulously, "How are you already so wet?"

She responds by gripping the blanket in her fists. He's teasing her, she's sure of it, with the way he drags his hand almost lazily across her. Then his finger flicks over the sensitive spot, just once, and it's enough to draw an embarrassing sound out of her.

"Good?" he asks, and she can only frantically nod.

And then she feels his tongue swipe against her and jolts so hard she nearly kicks him in the head. He chuckles -- heavens, she can feel him laughing against her -- and places a hand on her ankle to hold it in place while he presses his mouth directly over the sensitive spot.

She loses track of time. At some point he lifts his head, says only, "Fuck, Sarah," and then returns to his ministrations. She's far beyond the ability to say anything coherent, so she resigns herself to letting the world narrow to her, and him, and whatever his mouth and fingers happen to be doing.

He has a hand on her hip. She reaches for it, threading her fingers through his, and she thinks she feel him sigh against her. The pressure in her is building, and she marvels at it, at James's patience. It's been at least ten minutes, she's sure of it.

The growing feeling starts to falter. She's going to lose momentum.

As if sensing what's happened, James draws back. Only instead of declaring himself tired, he says, "You have no idea how many times I dreamed of this."

"You did not."

"I'll tell you all about it sometime," he says, his fingers replacing where his mouth had been. Sarah shudders as he plunges one finger inside her, followed by a second. "When you're less -- well."

It takes more time; Sarah can't tell how long. James gamely works at her until suddenly the pressure builds and then, with a gasp, she's finished, clenching around his fingers as he continues to stroke her through it.

He climbs up onto the bed beside her, and goddamn him, he sticks his fingers into his own mouth. He's going to destroy her.

She struggles to catch her breath. James turns onto his side to face her. "That was fun."

"Give me a moment," she mumbles. "I'll help you--"

He kisses her. "No need. We have time," even though she can see that he's hard. "Be careful, though. I've been known to inspire women to break off their engagements and practically throw themselves at me."

She smacks him with his pillow.
