random headcanon: when elliot worked at allsafe, he once forgot his name for two days. he would notice his work badge in the morning and feel like he’d never read his name before, and in those two days he felt no attachment to it— delaying his response time considerably when coworkers or supervisors tried to get his attention by voicing it. these people attributed it to “elliot’s spacing out again. angela says it’s probably because he usually doesn’t sleep very well.”

Did he hit his head? Great question. Carlos wasn’t even sure he remembered the event correctly, which only worked in his favor. He was fairly certain his mom threw something at him. It could have just as easily been him bumping his head when he woke up. His money was on the former, his mom was angry yesterday. Apparently he went over his allotted lunch limit, so she took it away, while also giving him more chores. Yeah his mom hit him with something, his bet was a shoe, but that was even fuzzier than the event itself.

He carefully rubbed his head, trying to gauge just how bad it was by feel. He nodded, best go with the lie— the terrible lie. “Yeah, when I woke up this morning, thought I missed my alarm, jerked up and hit my head.” It was a lie that could easily be found out, namely Carlos always woke up before any alarm. His internal clock did not let him sleep past 5:30 AM.

“Is it that bad?”

The bruise was pretty dark, so Elliot had no idea why he’d thought he needed to ask, anyway. It was painfully obvious that Carlos had hit his head somehow. Maybe Elliot was just...trying to get him to talk about it. If he wanted someone to listen. Or whatever.

He heard the explanation and his eyebrows drew together, the motion subdued and easy after he’d already smoked up. Like he always did during lunch.

“You sleep in a bunk bed? I didn’t know your head was close to the ceiling like that.” Huh. “Shit morning for you, man...”

His eyes move over the mark. Light purple. Effervescent.

“Nah, man. S’not that bad... Can barely see it.”

THE PERSON who’d just sat down next to him didn’t budge, so Ed just scoffed and had another sip from his two fingers of scotch sitting in front of him. Pretty amber liquid keeping him warm and loose and not thinking about every fucking thing he needed to do in order to get Elliot to help him with this fucking project.

IT WAS KILLING him, all the preparing. He just wanted to move, not bait him into playing along. Why couldn’t they just talk, like they used to? It didn’t used to be this difficult... And now this stronger won’t get out of Ed’s personal space.

“ Y’KNOW ” he said, turning to face the stranger, “ if you wanna sit in my lap, all you have to do is ask. ”

d.i.d. term 001: rapid switching

when a d.i.d. system of two or more identities switches at a rate which is uncommonly rapid. each alter might feel entirely dissociated, “distant,” or “foggy” during the process, have a difficult time remembering what goes on around them at the time (dissociative amnesia), and likewise feel ill, nauseous, or exhausted.

rapid switching might occur during times of high stress for a system. it is also possible for rapid switching to occur for reasons no member of the system is quite able to identify.
