Pony by R. J. Palacio
Twelve-year-old Silas is woken up in the middle of the night by three scary men on horseback who take his father away. Silas is left feeling shocked and scared. He is alone, except for his friend Mittenwool. But Mittenwool is a ghost. When a pony arrives at his door, Silas bravely decides to leave home and set off on a dangerous journey to find his father. He will face his fears as he goes on his journey. This will help him to unlock the secrets of his past and explore the mysteries of the world around him.
On April 27, 1858, a ten-year-old boy got out of the way of a thunderstorm by hiding under an oak tree. Shortly afterwards, a bolt of lightning hit the tree and set his clothes on fire. It also left a permanent mark on his back that looked like a tree. The result of a series of unlikely events led the boy's father to start experimenting with photography. He invented a new way to develop images that was different from the popular daguerreotype. His new method used a collodion process to produce what he called an irontype. The boy who had that awful experience is telling the story. Silas Bird and his father are the same person. His father invented a new system for processing photos.
His father's photographic technique proves amazingly popular and before long he has become famous. In fact, Silas' dad becomes just a little too famous. One night, Silas's best friend, Mittenwool, wakes him up suddenly in the middle of the night. He tells Silas that some strange riders are coming towards them. There's one important thing to remember about Mittenwool: he's a dead boy who only Silas can see. Three scary men on horseback soon arrive carrying a fourth horse with no rider. It is a big black horse with a very white face. The strangers make the situation more mysterious by having a tense meeting with Silas' dad. They ask him if he is a man named Mac Boat. Then they say they have come with an offer from their boss, Roscoe Ollerenshaw. Roscoe is like a mix of a Wild West outlaw and a Mafia boss: he makes offers that you can't say no to. Silas' dad says he's never heard of a Mac Boat. He says his name is Martin Bird and he's not accepting whatever offer Roscoe is making through his intermediaries.
Before long, Silas has lost one father to kidnappers and gained a pony that seems to be more than just an animal. Silas sets out to find his missing dad. His only companions are his invisible dead friend and a strange-looking horse. The three unlikely companions eventually come across a man shaped like a barrel with a white beard and a silver pistol. His name is Enoch Farmer. Enoch is exactly what Silas needs: a federal marshal working for the United States government. He's on the case of the most notorious fake money ring in the area. Mac Boat is one of the most talented counterfeiters in the world. And just like that, Silas is caught up in Farmer's chase of a well-known criminal and his group. They have kidnapped Martin Bird and want him to help them make fake money.
Eventually, Sheriff Chalfont and Deputy Beautyman join them on their mission. It also becomes clear that Mittenwool is not the only figure in Silas's experience. The dead boy is real. He used to be a real person, but now he's just a ghost. He doesn't like being called a ghost, though. He can only be seen by the living under very special conditions or to very special people like Silas. Silas has special abilities that let him see and interact with the dead, and not just in Mittenwool. Not at all.
The police finally catch Roscoe Ollerenshaw and his gang. Things don't always go as planned. Roscoe is captured, Pony kills one of his enemies, and Silas loses his dad, but this time it's permanent. Roscoe is wrapped up warm and put on a horse. He is going on a long journey to the courtroom. There, he will meet with the judge. But because he's a really bad person, Deputy Beautyman makes sure his ride is backwards, sitting on the horse so he can see what happens at the back. But it is not the tail that Roscoe is looking at. Instead, as if he was getting his own back for the insult, he stares angrily at Silas, who is riding behind him.
The boy, who can no longer control himself, suddenly starts crying because he finds the look in her eyes so cold and unkind. And it is very shortly after this outburst of uncontrollable emotion that Silas learns a secret about his invisible companion that Mittenwool has never had reason to make known up to then. Using only the word "Murderer!", which can only be heard by Silas and Roscoe Ollerenshaw (and only Silas can see the voice coming from the person speaking), Mittenwool turns the rude criminal into a blubbering blob of horrified flesh. Mittenwool finally shows some mercy towards the man. He whispers a warning into Roscoe's ear: if he ever approaches Silas again, he will face the spirit of every person he ever murdered.
For the next six years, Silas lives with Sheriff Chalfont and his family, who look after him. But remember that those six years include the four years between 1860 and 1864. And during those four years, America suffered more deaths than it had ever suffered before. The Civil War provides lots of chances for Silas to meet people who really need a way to talk to the dead. He eventually moves on from Mittenwool as he finally becomes older than the age at which his ghostly friend died, but not before finally learning his real name: John Hills.
On 27 April 1872, the Boneville Courier published a short story. It said that a young man had recently received a large inheritance from his grandmother's estate. Amazingly, this young man was also the same person who, as a child, had survived being struck by lightning. He plans to use the money he gets from the inheritance to build an orphanage on the grounds of the estate. This orphanage will be called the John Hills School for Orphaned Children. The school's emblem is going to be really unusual: a lightning bolt going across the white face of a pony.

Wonder Book Summary: Heartfelt Lessons To Discover
Introduction: Why Wonder is More Than Just a Children’s Book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio isn’t just a novel for young readers—it’s a heartfelt narrative that resonates with readers of all ages. This moving story explores themes of acceptance, empathy, and resilience through the eyes of August Pullman, a boy born with a facial difference. The story starts with August, or “Auggie,” stepping into the…

Reading Pony by R.J. Palacio, and man, someone should have bullied me into reading this earlier. Is the foreshadowing blunt and obvious? Is the parallel between Sailas (I'm not reading the book in English so might be misspelled) and Telemachus (from the Odyssey) really being pointed at by the author? Yes, but this is also middle grade, so I'll allow the book to fit the target audience. Despite what I've said so far, IT'S SO GOOD. The plot is quick paced and we have character development even in the very few chapters we have with each characters. I'm halfway through this book at 116 pages, and as much as I like a quick read, I wish we had more time with the characters? I like that the whole story is very efficient, but I just want more! More with Silas, more with Marshall Farmer, I love them!

ok. i guess
#i'm willing to forgive the acting lmao i'm biased & i've grown attached to these characters anyway#& i love that they gave these actors the exposure so. honestly idc. even if this seems rushed#yea they could've cleaned the script but. the substance. the depth they're giving the backstory...ok. go off. scream that shit#i mean ya the class inequality had been set in the beginning & in fairness is a theme they didn't forget no matter how tiring the plot had-#gotten#[i think it's a shame how the extension rlly brought down the quality. these past few months had been honestly unbearable & tiring so i-#understand the frustration & disappointment from the others & i can't blame them for setting their expectations high.#me tho. marupok. <3 willing to settle for less. <3 jk]#& i know it's predictable from inigo & juliet. but i was thinking they might go the unpredictable route & introduce the other k1ller/s-#as someone rich & powerful & was just petty enough to fuck over their lives. for vengeance yes but not rooted in injustice but just dirty-#politics#like the Barbara route#but. this is good at least#i wish they didn't give away much on those previews tbh the surprise is ruined :/#but whatever we're here now. *sigh* 2 days left......what else do u have in store another wasted-potential-show :')#widows' war#now i'm wondering like. did the writers & production team got fucked over bc i really refuse to believe this is what they would settle for-#if this show was managed correctly#like who decided for the extension exactly. was it offered & they accepted or were they pressured to agree & extend idk how gma is so awful#@ handling this shit bc it happens to a looot of their shows.#stop wasting. literally everything. to ur scummy corporate business-oriented operation fkn. whatever stop whatever u're doing right now#sooo tacky. omg#s-z-t-e d0c i understand she's. in a league of her own. (a shitty one). but i refuse to believe the other writers r this incompetent...#can we re-do the show :( ye all of it :( & just follow what the writers & production team wanted for it originally :( that'd be great ty#edit: episode 143 finally utilizing their flashbacks correctly everyone clap & scream /j#edit: jericho...idk. idk about this one.#like it makes sense. he's a palacios. he's embittered by what happened to him & his mother. but to reveal it this way....idk. off.

Wonder
by R.J. Palacio
I love it so much, because it tells a beautiful and timeless story about how kindness and courage can affect the lives of different people in different ways and that tolerance and friendship hold the world together.
Since it also takes place in a school, at least partly, it would fit perfectly in your context...
ATTENTION BOOKLOVERS
I’ve been asked (forced) to write a column in my school’s newspaper dedicated to book recommendations (despite the fact that I’m neither part of the newspaper nor have I ever read it before). It’s supposed to be a Valentine’s Day special edition column about books that you could just fall in love with. Now, being a book lover myself, (which is most likely the reason I was given this task) I have many, many books I’d like to add to the list. However, my book taste is very limited to certain genres and types, and I don’t want the recommendations to be limited. If possible, I’d like to get a variety of different types so there is a little something for everyone! Which brings me to my question…
Do you have a book that you just absolutely adore? It may have changed your outlook on life, or it could have just been a really good read. If so, please let me know!! I’d love to know why you love it as well. If anyone at all is reading this, thank you!
