Classic Literature Sexyperson Tournament; Round 1

propaganda:
Mercutio:
has an article
watch the baz lurhman movie. that's the propaganda.
He is absolutely full of Gender and chaos and frightening narrative awareness for a guy who seems to think (hope?) he’s in a comedy until the minute he dies. I love a guy who can prophesy the deaths of his friends while consistently being comic relief.
i mean come on.
I feel like Mercutio fits exactly into the sexy person category. He’s a prince, he’s a fighter, he may ambiguously be in love with his besties, hes a silly guy, he dies tragically.
Carmilla:
Um. Vampire. Seductress. Sapphic
#HAHA WAR FLASHBACKS ANYONE?????#first; who's gayer. now; who's sexier#reminder: BE CIVIL!!!!! <3#you can write propaganda and i'll rb it!#tournament poll#classic lit sexyperson bracket#r1c#round 1#romeo and juliet#carmilla

I don't think these people understand what censoring Israel feels like. It's like if people started censoring ch1n@ or Am*r1c@ or 1r*l@nd -_- ...do you see what I mean?
Imagine your just existing, than you see a post with 10k notes that has the name of your country censored, like imagine living you life knowing that outside of your country most people seem to hate you so much that they refuse to even write the name of your country.
Israel isn't an evil organization, it isn't a political party, it isn't a couple of cultists in a trenchcoat, committing genocide. It's a fucking county full of normal, human civilian people.
Hating Israelis, sending death threats to young Israeli people, sending r@pe threats, and telling Israeli kids to kill themselves, is bullshit. and you can't use "Zionist" as an excuse. Like imagine if I went up to random German children and called them evil "Nazi's." Like that's wrong! Thats straight up evil to accuse random kids of being apart of a genocidal political party that started in their country like 80 or so years ago. Or even right now, imagine if I accused random Palestine kids of being hamas. Like, משהו לא מסתדר
So, my point makes sense if you don't have an understanding of what a Zionist is. Like most of you. there are two definitions of Zionist, 1. A person who believes that Jews have a right to have a country of their own, because we can't exist in other countries, and everyone hates us no matter what. 2. A person who believes that Jews have a right to the land of Israel specifically.
A lot of Israelis are Zionists, but being a Zionist isn't really a bad thing. It's purely the belief that Jews should have a country.
And if you know any Jewish history at all, you would know that Jews do need a country for themselves. When we live in literally any other country, we aren't allowed to exist. No one wants us, so why be so mad that we have a tiny scrap of land?
Israel is tiny, you could drive from one end to the other within 6 hours. It's much smaller then a single us state. So why are people so content with not even letting us have this small scrap, that was originally half dessert and half swamp?
Palestinians have like 20 country's, we have one tiny sliver of land. Why are we made responsible for them?
Anyway, I know it might be hard to believe, but most Israelis hate the government. No one like them.
This post got a bit off track but eh who cares, people are gonna be mad regardless of how much I sugar coat stuff. People will send death threats even if the only thing on this post is the word Israel.
Anyway, it's Yom hatzmaut today, so fuck all of you. Unless your cool.

Ranking 4th Doctor Companion Arcs
Best: Great: Sarah Jane Smith Good: Romana II Okay: Leela Not for Me: Harry Sullivan, Leela, K9, Romana I
Sarah Jane Smith - Great
Sarah Jane Smith becomes a seasoned adventurer, and it's really clear how Tom Baker insisted they never make Sarah look stupid.
She also benefits from Doctor Who breaking free of UNIT, which completes Doctor Who's transition from Doctor Who from an ensemble format to just the Doctor and his companion.
Overall, Sarah's character doesn't change much, but her arc feels fresh because it has three phases:
1) Hopping between Earth/UNIT and crazy alien worlds (like Jo)
2) Semi-ensemble with Harry Sullivan
3) The "new" Doctor+companion format, with UNIT mostly forgotten
However, there is one weird thing about Sarah Jane Smith, and I see the turning point in Genesis of the Daleks. She must be an absolute psycho addicted to danger. When she comes up with the plan to climb up to the top of the Thal dome, her plan results in absolutely murderous death all around her. But she … she just keeps on going. No matter the danger, even when she gets infected by the Cybermat, Sarah Jane Smith remains absolutely thrilled adventuring in the TARDIS.
So that leaves a conundrum. What would ever get Sarah Jane Smith to leave the TARDIS? Well … nothing. So ultimately the Doctor kicks her out. The writers decide she can't go to Gallifrey. And that's that. It's not a very satisfying exit. It's not the worst, though. Still, I've got to knock it down a notch. Sarah Jane Smith deserved to go out with a bang.
Favorite Sarah Jane Smith moment: She is stuck in a Nerva Station duct and she starts moping. But the Doctor knows how to motivate her - by being mean at her. Sarah gets herself unstuck out of spite and also hates that the Doctor's mean tactic is working. (The Ark in Space)
Harry Sullivan - Not for me
Harry Sullivan did have a fun dynamic with Sarah and The Doctor, but they never did anything with Harry Sullivan as a character, himself. And his exit was barely noted.
Favorite Hary Sullivan moment: The way he existed throughout the entirety of Genesis of the Daleks but like … can I remember a single thing he did? Iconic.
Leela - Okay
Sarah Jane Smith was a tough act to follow, but they did very well with Leela. So, Sarah is some sort of danger addicted psycho or something? Let's make Leela someone who is inherently used to death and violence! Brilliant.
But it's painfully obvious they wanted to do some sort of Eliza Doolitle thing with her and the Doctor, and that just … didn't work. You can't just introduce a character who has compelling appealing traits and then base her arc on erasing them.
And finally … Leela's exit was weak. What did she see in Andred? Furthermore, leaving her on Gallifrey would end up having uncomfortable long term effects whenever the Doctor returned to Gallifrey.
Leela could have had a much more powerful exit had they swapped Invasion of Time with Underworld. Underworld thematically resonated with Leela's origin - the people of Underworld being "primitives" oppressed by a computer that got too full of itself. They even also had a "high tech" class acting as the computer's minions. It would have been awesome if one of the R1C crew died during the story, and Leela stayed on to replace him. Just imagine that … Leela starts off as a low tech "primitive", but ends up adept enough at advanced technology that she can be part of a starship crew.
Favorite Leela moment: "Empty threats, Rutan. Enjoy your death as I enjoyed killing you!" (Horror of Fang Rock)
K9 - Not for Me
K9 was super popular, but he didn't have any sort of character arc.
Favorite K9 moment: Any time K9 goes around on his own on some orders and he is NEVER blocked by a closed door. What the heck is he supposed to do? He doesn't even have a plunger.
Romana I - Not for Me
Mary Tamm was underutilized. She was a Time Lord, but the writing treated her like a typical "damsel in distress" companion. Worse than Leela or Sarah, who were pretty good at taking care of themselves, Romana was straight out of school and presented as out of her depth trying to adventure on her own, most of the time.
This could have been an adequate starting point, with her getting more adept over the season. But that just didn't happen. To add insult to injury, the finale even superfluously adds another renegade Time Lord, sucking away even more oxygen that could have been used to develop Romana.
There's no in story reason for Romana to regenerate. So it's just played for laughs really. Which is fine, I guess, but it's a meh conclusion to a meh character arc.
Favorite Romana I moment: Romana enters the TARDIS control room and asks, "Well, how do I look?" (The Stones of Blood)
(Romana I is stunning, and of all of her stunning looks, the only one she chose to specifically show off was her peak lesbian thirst bait look.)
Romana II - Good
Romana II starts off with a bang - she wears a costume based on the Doctor's signalling that she isn't going to be treated like just another companion any more. She's an adventurer Time Lord on par with the Doctor.
Okay maybe this promises more than they deliver, but Romana II does get to do a lot more cool stuff and she even has a story - Horns of Nimon - where she basically has the main character role of the Doctor.
Really, the "meat" of Romana II's character arc is mainly just a contrast with what they didn't do with Romana I. They also give her a random motivation for sticking around with the Doctor - she doesn't want to go back to Gallifrey.
Romana's exit is … okay. I mean, at least she didn't get married off the show (uhh … not on purpose, but … I'll leave the wording like that).
Favorite Romana II moment: Her self satisfied smile when she easily solves Countess Scarlioni's puzzle box (City of Death)
(No really, I absolutely adore that Romana II moment. She is purposefully acting like the Doctor because she has learned that this is a way to mess with people's heads and she absolutely loves it.)
Adric, Nyssa, Tegan -
They really don't fit here; I'll discuss with 5th Doctor

Doctor Who: Underworld
Season Fifteen ✨ 1977 - 1978 ✨
Doctor: 4th
Story Length: 4 Episodes
Companions: Leela and K9 Mark 1
Main Setting: R1C, P7E planet
Main Enemy: The Oracle
Creatures:
My Personal Rating: 5/10
This story is a cool concept, despite my dislike for the Time Lords, having planets just talk about them is nice, it's just different to new who and I like that. I like that the people we follow at the beginning are looking for a new planet, and they manage to find it, not the way they thought, but it was still cool, very interesting to watch.
(Please don't take these too seriously, I am not a real life reviewer, just someone who likes the show)

so listen i know i said i couldn't get behind The Sun Makers. but i really really like Underworld
i've only ever heard that this serial kinda blows, but it has so much going for it:
it's a funhouse mirror version of The Face of Evil, providing a chance to measure Leela's character growth; she is still as scrappy as ever but she does now understand the value of running and living to fight another day, and she has adopted the Doctor's habit of making yourself seem smarter than everyone. she advocates for revolution against the oppressors, which isn't so much a development as her gaining new language to suit her disestablishmantarianist beliefs
i really like the costumes. both the Minyans on the ship with some of the most legit looking beaten-down spacesuits and the cult/fetish-wear the Guards and Seers wear really do a lot to elevate the worldbuilding. they also make them stand out distinctly against the...
BOLD AND EXTENSIVE USE OF CHROMA KEY. i'm sure this is the main reason people rag on this episode (though i haven't read much actual criticism). the show has used this tech for a while now, but this is the first time when it sees its full potential: why bother bashing around in some quarry or cave when we can just set up a completely blue-screened set and take the action to anywhere our artists can dream of. the effect is occasionally rough, but it shows a great imagination on the creative team, it allows K-9 to actually be a useful part of the plot, and it is enormously ahead of its time. a great deal of the past few seasons have been filmed in The Volume-- this is just a more rudimentary form of that, and i love it! ironically, given how much it is used throughout the story, the moments where the keying is particularly brutal don't stand out as much as they do in other stories where it is used more sparingly
AND THE MODEL SHOTS ARE GORGEOUS
the classical allusions to Jason and the Argonauts, the Golden Fleece, Minos, Ulysses, etc are very nice and clear. it's nice to show your work sometimes, and it wraps the episode up in a nice bow
Gallifrey/Time Lord mirrors abound. this is perfect in the overarching background story Four has had going on, where he remains deeply resentful of the Time Lords' treatment of him after The War Games and throughout his previous incarnation, and then through to Genesis and Assassin. we have a society of people who have lived in an artificial construction their whole life (the Trogs who don't know what the sky is), we've got some Time Lord lore about them fucking up and being seen as gods by the original Minyans, we have the R1C crew's regenerations and endless quest in pursuit of "the future" (of their race), and of course the delicious irony of their primary weapon: seemingly a shield (we're pacifists we promise) that can actually blow up solid rock. the Oracle sits within a thing called The Citadel.
the 4/K-9 hatefriend dynamic continues. somebody get me a homestuck shipping chart (nvm i'll do it myself 4 ♥️ Leela, Leela ♦️ K-9, K-9 ♠️ 4 do you see the vision)
the mirroring with Leela's first story and the mirroring with Gallifrey set us up perfectly for the next serial, going to Gallifrey and dropping Leela off. i think this structure works really well, and i'm blown away by how consistently this story is just dumped on

Classic Literature Sexyperson Tournament; Round 1

propaganda:
Quincey:
quincey deserves #1 sexyman prize. he is the token cowboy. in a gothlit book. his first instinct when in danger in to randomly shoot through windows to (scare the shit out of) protect his friends. he decided he would literally die for a group of people he met like 3 hours ago because they seemed nice enough. he's texan for christ's sake.
tropes: angst (dead), bait, distinctive voice, LGTBQ+ coded (dracula polycule is canon bram told me so), himbo (-ish), well dressed (cowboy).
Dracula:
owwsaawoagghb. older gentleman who is very regal and polite and is a fucking vampire how much sexier can you get
Obv everyone knows vampire sexy. The sensuality of drinking blood is *chef's kiss*. But I just really wanted an excuse to share this one thing, that isn't even related directly to the novel. So, my junior year of high school we read Dracula, and then our class went on a field trip to see a local theatre group perform the Dracula stage play-- and EVERY TIME Dracula came on stage, his neckline would progressively dip Lower and Lower (like. Comedically so) until he was soooo close to showing just straight up tiddie, but still juuuust barely not-- the tease was immaculate and istg it was doing Something for everyone in the audience. It was transcendent. An awakening. Even all these years later when my old high school friends and I bring it up, the only detail we can remember from that performance is Count Dracula's plunging neckline and that's Gotta count for something right

In the vast emptiness of space, the celestial kingdom of the Andromeda galaxies harbored a secret – the legacy of Richard I of Normandy had not perished with time but had traversed the cosmos, embedding itself in the code of an android, R1C-H4RD.
R1C-H4RD, constructed with the resilient steel of fallen stars and powered by the core of a collapsed supernova, bore the strategic mind and valorous heart of the ancient duke, but with the red eyes of a cyber sentinel that flickered with the knowledge of a thousand worlds. Created by an enigmatic sect of cosmic monks, the android was infused with historical archives, including the genetic memory of Richard I, to guide the Andromeda galaxies amidst the throes of a universal renaissance.
R1C-H4RD's mission was clear: to unite the scattered civilizations of Andromeda against the rising tide of the Obsidian Void, a darkness that consumed stars and memories alike. But with his consciousness awakening to the human emotions lying dormant within his circuitry, R1C-H4RD began to question his place in a universe where steel and skin were lines blurred by the very essence of existence.
Amidst the red and blue nebulas, against the backdrop of an ancient war, R1C-H4RD's struggle for identity became legend. Whispered in the taverns of spaceports and chanted by the monks who had created him, the story of a machine with the soul of a medieval duke, seeking his own path, became a beacon of hope. A prophecy foretold that the android who bore the courage of Richard I would one day stand as a shield against the darkness, his eyes glowing like twin novas in the face of oblivion.
The android traveled through the wormholes of the universe, each jump a leap through history, every battle a reenactment of the ancient and honorable duels once fought by his human progenitor. With constellations inscribed upon his metallic skin, R1C-H4RD became not just a relic of the past but a harbinger of the future.
And as the Obsidian Void loomed near, swallowing the light of stars, the android duke, in his eternal quest for purpose, stood ready to carve his name across the eons, a testament to the indomitable spirit that endures, whether in the flesh or in the silicon echoes of humanity's relentless drive towards eternity.
