Saturday Movie Night: Freight & A City
youtube
In Victorian times, the railways of Britain expanded in an atmosphere of bitter competition, with many companies vying against one another for business in the same areas. This resulted in many parts of the country being served by multiple railway lines when just one or two would have done. Nowhere was this more obvious than in the Sheffield area, and in the 1960s, BR decided to sweep away all the old depots and redundant lines. In their place were left a single freight terminal, a single diesel depot, and one of the largest marshalling yards in Europe.

SR-71 pilot recalls when his RSO Flipped Off a French Air Force Mirage III Pilot (Then They lit their Blackbird’s Afterburners and Outran him)
The SR-71 Blackbird
The SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft was the world’s fastest jet-propelled aircraft and the most advanced member of the Blackbird family developed by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’s clandestine “Skunk Works” division.
The Blackbird was in a different category from anything that had come before. “Everything had to be invented. Everything,” Skunk Works legendary aircraft designer Kelly Johnson recalled in an interesting article appeared on Lockheed Martin website.
The speed of the SR-71 exceeded 2,000 mph. Other planes of the era could, in theory, approximate that speed but only in short, after-burner-driven bursts. The Blackbird maintained a record-setting speed for hours at a time.

One of the most entertaining stories about flying the Blackbird comes from Lt. Colonel William Burk Jr., who shares about a particular mission he flew [according to SR-71 pilot Stormy Boudreaux, Tom Henichek was Burk’s RSO for that mission] over Lebanon back in 1982 in the book Skunk Works by Ben Rich.
Blackbird over Lebanon
‘In the fall of ’82, I flew from Mildenhall on a mission over Lebanon in response to the Marine barracks bombing. President Reagan ordered photo coverage of all the terrorist basis in the region. The French refused to allow us overfly, so our mission profile was to refuel off the south coast of England, a Mach 3 cruise leg down the coast of Portugal and Spain, left turn through the Straits of Gibraltar, refuel in the Western Mediterranean, right turn into Lebanon and fly right down main street Beirut, exit along the southern Mediterranean with another refueling over Malta, supersonic back out the straits, and return to England.
‘Because Syria had a Soviet SA-5 missile system just west of Damascus that we would be penetrating (we were unsure of Syria’s intentions in this conflict), we programmed to fly above 80,000 feet and at Mach 3 plus to be on the safe side, knowing that this advanced missile had the range and speed to nail us.
SR-71 pilot recalls when his RSO Flipped Off a French Air Force Mirage III Pilot (Then They lit their Blackbird’s Afterburners and Outran him)
‘As we entered Lebanon’s airspace my Recon Systems Officer in the rear cockpit informed me that our defensive systems display showed we were being tracked by that SA-5. About 15 seconds later we got a warning of active guidance signals from the SA-5 site. We couldn’t tell whether there was an actual launch or the missile was still on the rails, but they were actively tracking us. We didn’t waste any time wondering, but climbed and pushed that throttle, and said a couple of “Hail Kellys.”
SR-71 crew flipping off a French Air Force Mirage III Pilot
‘We completed our pass over Beirut and turned toward Malta, when I got a warning low-oil-pressure light on my right engine. Even though the engine was running fine I slowed down and lowered our altitude and made a direct line for England. We decided to cross France without clearance instead of going the roundabout way.
‘We made it almost across, when I looked out the left window and saw a French Mirage III sitting ten feet off my left wing. He came up on our frequency and asked us for our Diplomatic Clearance Number. I had no idea what he was talking about, so I told him to stand by. I ask my backseater, who said, “Don’t worry about it. I just gave it to him.” What he had given him was “the bird” with his middle finger: I lit the afterburners and left that Mirage standing still. Two minutes later, we were crossing the Channel.’

Some bits from Shrewsbury [12/02/24 + 04/08/24]. I was planning to do Sheffield but got waylaid by the sight of the market hall in my photo library.
From top to bottom:
The side of the Lloyds Bank building + detail shot. I don't have a good picture but the front is also gorgeous. I love the bulkiness a bank building warrants.
The curvaceous exterior of the Market Hall. Like all market halls, it's yet to ever be open when I'm there, so the interior will remain a mystery (although there is a viewing platform you can go up).
A colourful row of shops.
Shrewsbury Railway Station, built in 1848, is absolutely not modernist, but I found the wooden doors with the Rail Alphabet sign above absolutely charming.
And finally, a logo on The Quarry Swimming & Fitness Centre, another one of my weaknesses.
Shrewsbury is a very nice market town with plenty of modernist icons to look at, more so than I've included here, it's well worth a visit!

💥Is there a chapter, scene, or WIP you're most excited to write? Share a snippet or tell us about it!
Hope you're starting to feel better 😊
I think (atm) it's either the bonus chapter of wwyd where cc takes fran shopping OR the holiday party chapter of the agony aunt au where cc brings a date who looks a little familiar, niles loses his mind and fran loses her temper (in a hot way). i'm also planning to write the birthday party referenced in the chanukah fic bc i can't stop thinking about it 😭
an (unedited) snippet from the bonus chapter under the read more!
Fran knew CC was wealthy. It’s not even just about her things, the expensive clothes and the frankly ridiculous Upper West Side apartment, it’s in the way she holds herself and talks, the way she commands a room the second she walks in. CC is rich beyond her wildest dreams. Which is why she shouldn't be surprised when CC guides her to the personal shopping counter at Bergdorf’s and addresses the woman there by her first name.
“Anna, I called earlier to book an appointment for Fran Fine.”
“Yes Miss Babcock, I have your dress here and I’ve already pulled some gowns in the colours you suggested. I’ll take you through.”
She leads them through to the largest dressing room Fran’s ever seen, a rail of dresses in shades of pink and red standing in one corner. She feels like she can barely afford to stand there, let alone buy anything. CC comes to stand next to her, her hand resting on Fran’s lower back.
“Is this ok, darling?”
She realises she's not really sure. It’s just the opposite of what she'd been expecting when CC had suggested taking her shopping. She’s used to a shopping trip meaning several hours browsing Loehmann’s with Val or her mother, debating how much she can afford to put on her credit card this month. She loves it, loves finding the perfect thing tucked away at the back of the store and giggling with Val as they show Sylvia a succession of hideous outfits. Once a year, around the holidays, she comes down to 5th Avenue and lets herself dream about affording this kind of thing one day. When she's not a nanny on six bucks an hour. And it's not like she was expecting CC to shop off label. But she’s treating this like it's any other Monday, as if there's not a rack of dresses in the corner which each cost more than Fran makes in a year, as if half the staff hadn't looked down their noses at Fran the second they pushed through the doors, as if Fran could ever fit in in a place like this. This is CC’s normal and Fran’s so far out of her depth that she feels a little lightheaded.
“Honey, is this really necessary? I was just gonna go to Loehmann's.”
CC leans in a little closer, gesturing for Anna to leave them alone.
“It’s not really necessary, no. But I like seeing you dressed up in beautiful things. So…indulge me?” It’s not fair, Fran thinks, the way her voice drops or the way her mouth forms the word ‘indulge’. How is she supposed to say no to that? “If there's nothing you like, we’ll go anywhere you want.”
“It’s just…so expensive.”
“Maxwell was kind enough to give me his credit card. He was just so grateful that I was taking you shopping,” she grins, “He thinks I'm going to have a terrible time.”
Fran smirks. Mr Sheffield's paid for enough of her fancy outfits. What's one more?
“Oh, does he now?”
CC unbuttons Fran’s shirt and pushes it off her shoulders, letting it fall crumpled to the floor.
“Mmm, he was so apologetic,” she undoes Fran's jeans and pushes them down over her hips, helping her step out of them and her shoes, “So sorry that I had to take time out of my day to do this. Kept saying I was doing him a huge favour.”
He clearly has no idea. Or he's a much better actor than they’ve given him credit for. Fran’s not bothered either way, because CC’s pulling her over to the rail of dresses and looking at her as if she’s sizing her up. She pulls a maroon gown down and holds it up, scrutinizing it against Fran’s skin.
“This one first, I think.”
Fran thought she loved shopping because of the search, because of the choice and the possibilities. When they got here, she couldn't understand why CC would want someone else to pick out what she should try on, what she should wear. Not that it’s not working for her, clearly, but she thinks it must suck all the fun out of getting dressed in the morning. Fran’s clothes are so much a part of who she is, she can’t fathom having anyone else choose them for her. But now CC’s helping her into another dress, this one a deep cherry red with the neckline cut across her shoulders, and it fits like a glove and CC can't stop looking at her. This is probably the 7th dress she’s put on, and she’s been watching CC get more and more flushed, less and less able to string a sentence together as she helps Fran change and then bosses her around a bit, tells her how to stand and to turn slowly so she can see her from every angle. And Fran’s starting to get it. She doesn't want a stranger picking out her clothes, although Anna has done a very good job, but CC choosing them? CC looking at her in her underwear with that slightly hard gaze, flicking through clothes and deciding what she wants to see Fran in? And then lounging back against the mirror as Fran models them for her? It’s liable to ruin both her and the ridiculously expensive dresses.
“What do you think, darling?”

Logically and realistically, American engines shouldn't be on Sodor (or the British Isles for that matter) because of gauge issues (regauging their wheels for British gauge is a complex matter), loading gauge (their size meant they're just going to crash into the first platform, tunnel, or bridge they ran into), and weight (they're just going to break the rails and derail). So what are the stories of American engines like Hank, Connor, and Caitlin? Were their basis changed or not?
hi 👋
their basis were changed, I know I’ve seen some takes on them being able to work as their current forms but I got inspired by other folks. Caitlin is a streamlined LMS Princess Royal Class/Coronation Class while Connor is a LMS Royal Scot Class, I just think they’re very pretty plus fitting their rivalry with the Gresley. (Gordon, Spencer, etc)
they’re owned by the earl and often do passengers or Railtours, they still have their energetic and excitable personalities though Connor is a bit more cautious and struggles to let himself loosen up wishing to keep his reputation intact making seem quite snooby but nah he’s just anxious meanwhile Caitlin is just one of my adhd icons she means well
Meanwhile Hank is basically everyone’s uncle along with Porter and Sam, dutifully serves anywhere he is at and is a USATC S160 since they went all over the world, he Sam and Porter basically raised Sheffield, Neville, Rosie and Molly when they all came to the NWR to help with the war effort and tried his best to train and protect them mostly from their engine colonel’s wrath right now he’s switching between chilling at museums or hopping about place to place
he is very loud and proud of his heritage, and talks endlessly about his adventures abroad, from which he has learnt many things like with Sam and is never afraid to give others advice (in his own jolly way), and rarely doesn't have a smile on his face.

Fooooor the recent writer's questions:
6 (AD&VD), 12 but both for smut and general, 18 (SbS), 26, 34, 50!
6. What’s one fact about the universe of A Dark & Verdant Door that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
I didn’t really get a chance to explore Yaz’s world beyond Sheffield, or the world the Warden is from, since those were beyond the scope of that story. Things that would be fun to think about/write about would be the politics of Yaz’s world, what was up with her early military training, maybe some sort of new conflict arising from the history that I threw hints at with the ruins around the town. And the Warden, well there’s not much DW canon to draw from on the Doctor’s place of origin, so that would just be me pulling a world of shapeshifters out of a hat and making up a bunch of stuff about it. Which sounds FUN.
12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you? (smut and general)
For a DW-specific general trope, I’d say I’ve never really liked fobwatch fics, and yet I find myself playing with the concept in something I’m working on currently. (Sort-of. Because it’s also an AU. And very hard to describe.)
Smut-wise, hm, that’s actually a difficult question, I tend to stay not-interested in the few things I’m not interested in… I’ll say roleplay scenarios in general might be growing on me a bit.
18. If you wrote a sequel to Star by Star, what would it involve?
Oh you got me with this one, because I have a pretty robust outline just sitting here in my google docs folder… It involves the growing conflict between the Alliance and Gallifrey, money problems, more of Theo’s secrets, and an increasingly complicated quest gallivanting across the galaxies to find Theo a new cybernetic heart.
26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?
If I had to choose, I’d go with no dialogue, because you can pry action and description from my cold, dead hands! I think I could still get my point across writing something like that. Hmm… that one’s going into the “concepts that interest me” file…
34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?
Any time you find me waxing poetic about art or throwing art-related terms into a story, that’s because of my background in fine arts. The way plants creep into every story is mostly cause I think they’re neat, but also because of childhood summers spent building forts out of branches and my current obsession with gardening. Other weird ideas come from reading approximately 1 zillion books and mixing and matching bits and pieces of them with stuff I’m interested in!
50. Answer any question of your choice, or talk about anything you want to talk about!
I’ll answer "49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!"
One of the many projects I've been juggling lately is an western-fantasy AU that I’m going to have a hell of a time tagging if I ever get it done. I’ll throw in a little bit to try and get the vibes across:
“I know what you are.”
Does she, now? How can that be possible?
Deep shadows under Grace’s eyes betray her exhaustion, but her gaze is pointed, dangerous. “I should have seen it last night. But the Oncoming Storm only appears under the light of the full moon. Why are you still here?”
She’s sharp; not that Yaz isn’t, but Yaz is young. Not experienced in the way Grace is.
“I don’t know,” they say. “I seem to be stuck.”
Grace paces to the end of the porch, boots thumping against the boards. She leans on the rail and looks out over the street. “I’m sorry.” She glances back, then to the street again. Rain dampens her shirtsleeves, droplets hang in the threads of her poncho. “I think we might have tethered you here, somehow, when we summoned you.”
Thanks for the asks!

The electric countermeasures that were in the SR 71 were able to blind North Vietnam’s radar.
THE SR-71 PLAYED A MAJOR PART IN LINEBACKER II
The bombing of the supply channels of Vietnam, which led to the ending of the war (Jan. 1973) Linebacker II, an SR 71, was flying with the B-52 shielding them with their electric countermeasures.. ⭐️by blinding the North Vietnamese radar.⭐️
The following story was sent to me by Chris Cobb, who is my neighbor and went to high school with me, about his father, Colonel Darrel Cobb, and Reg Blackwell, “My Dad passed away four years ago. . . .but boy, did we hear some of the stories in the latter years. For example, in this mission, my Dad said that he was watching the SAMs coming toward him and took his eye off the speed. He checked with Reg, the RSO, what speed he showed, and he replied 2150 KTAS (which translates to 2474 MPR).”
Essentially, this mission blinded the North Vietnamese radar by the SR ECM. And within one month, the Paris peace talks were held, and the was over.
An hour before midnight on 27 December 1972, Giant Scale mission GS663 got underway when SR-71 975 lifted off Kadena runway on what would prove to be the only Habu night sortie of the entire Vietnam War.
Col. Darrel Cobb and RSO Capt Reggie Blackwell's mission objective was to conduct a coordinated EMR/HRR sortie to determine if the North Vietnamese had acquired new equipment or employed updated procedures for the SA-2s that were responsible for generating such high B-52 losses. To achieve this, the SR-71’s arrival over the Haiphong/Hanoi areas was timed at precisely the exact moment that 60 B-52s were to begin dropping their bombs on the rail yards at Lang Dang, Duc Noi, and Trung Quant, the Van Dien supply center, and three missile sites.
With the North's defensive radar systems running at full stretch to cope with the raid, intelligence planners reasoned that this would be an ideal time for such a sortie. In addition, the SR-71, with its unmatched ECM suite, would provide additional electronic support for the bombers.
As they arrived at the collection area on schedule, Cobb and Blackwell observed numerous SA-2 firings. During the fleeting moments when they were crossing the immediate target area, they were able to radiate a blinding ECM blanket. During the raid, only one Guam-based B-52 was lost. Darrel and Reggie landed back at Kadena at 0239 hours. The next day they learned that their mission had produced a wealth of intelligence data.
The two 60-bomber raids launched on the final two nights of Linebacker II saw all B-52s arrive back at their bases safely. Following the action on the night of 29/30 December, the North Vietnamese government expressed a willingness to return to the negotiating table.
The Habus had faithfully recorded a record of Linebacker's enormous level of destruction. The conflict in Vietnam ended for the United States when the Paris Agreement was enacted on 27 January 1973.

Riverrosetober 2023- Day 7, Prompt: Home
THE WOMAN WHO FELL TO EARTH- TARDIS INSIDE, 13 HAS FALLEN
Rose hit the side of the TARDIS walls, she twisted and grabbed onto the railing. Somewhere to her right was River who had slammed into the console and gripping onto the controls for her life, she may have regained more regeneration cycles but she did not want to regenerate right after her husband-wife. Especially in the TARDIS which had just dealt with their regeneration. She and Rose had been scolding him for holding it back, but when he got into one of those depressive states. Gods, there wasn't a whole lot they could do.
Eventually the shaking of the TARDIS stopped, though she kicked the two of them out of the console room. Which was more then fine with the two of them for the moment because despite both of their superior biology's (Rose shivered, that sounded far too much like her husband-wife. Blimey, that'd take some getting used to.) being that close to a regeneration, especially one that's part of a fresh set... best they go to the Med Bay and make sure neither of them are injured, and then when that's finished they can go and see what their lovely girl has come up with for a new console.
Earth- 2018, Sheffield
"-oh! And I need to get back to my Rose and my River. Ooh, will they still like me?" 13 looked down at her body, then quickly looked into the microwave that she was using to help locate the TARDIS. She was quite short in this body, shorter then she'd been in others. Her eyes flicked up to her hair, she rather liked it-though she was afraid that Rose might say she stole hers.
Standing back up and spinning to face the three humans that stood nearby she had a grin on her face, "Right! One... Two... Three!" she used her makeshift sonic, for a moment nothing happened and then-she was floating in deep space. The Doctor sighed, then panicked, looked, and saw Yaz, Graham, and Ryan nearby. "Fuck."
TARDIS Interior
Carefully Rose rose from the table and stretched, full body scans were a nuisance. She turned towards River, "So? Anything abnormal with me?"
"Nope. According to the scans you are perfectly fine-well, as much as you ever are. Your cell degradation has slowed down some more, so your life expectancy has increased more."
"Great," she swung her legs off the table, looking down at her outfit, "New clothing time?"
River sighed, "New clothing time indeed. And perhaps some chips?"
Rose perked up, "hmmm, how about fishfingers with custard?"
"...sure, you can have custard with it, just, when the Doctor is back- please don't give any to them."
"Why not? They liked it perfectly fine in their eleventh body."
"Rose."
"Ok, ok! I won't... while you can see anyways."
"What was that last bit, Darling?"
"Nothing! Now, food-then outfits. And then we check out the console room."
THE GHOST MONUMENT- end of episode with 13
"Ohh! Oh, yes! C'mon, come to mama!" 13 has a manic grin on her face she called out to the TARDIS trying to stabilize her. Finally she succeeded.
Rushing over to pulled the doors wide open, and suddenly, almost reverently she walked in. Turning to look around, "oh, you've redecorated. I quite like it."
"You better since you're the reason she had to change desktops."
The Doctor spun, eyes landing on one of her wives, "Rose!" she rushed over and lifted her wife into a hug before setting her down. Then she noticed something was wrong, she had to look up. And at that realization she sighed, and Rose giggled.
Hesitantly, the Doctor stepped back. Suddenly self-conscious, what if they didn't like her now?
Apparently she had voiced that concern aloud and was being reprimanded, by River. "-d you absolute idiot! Of course we love you. Now- we are going to get you to the zero room and you are going to stay until your fully done regenerating. Don't think I don't see the wisps still circling."
Somehow she ended being led away by River, and Rose turned to the three people nearby. She sighed before shaking her head, "Would you like a 'cuppa?"
Yaz nodded, with Graham not for behind, but Ryan asked if he could have coffee. To which Rose simply smiled, "'course you can." and that was that.
