I don't usually listen to songs that talk about unrequited love, broken hearts, or the loss of love, but I can't resist Ana Gabriel and her incredible voice, which makes it seem that more than singing, she is telling us these stories from her own pain, as if she were crying for them. So it doesn't matter if you are in a happy relationship or you are aroace, come with me, sit down and let's drink alcohol or the beverage of your choice, and cry for the loves that ceased to be or will never be.

artist of the night: Chavela Vargas

Thought I’d highlight one of my favorite lesbians of history!! Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas started her singing career after the age of 30, and continued until she was well into her seventies. She started singing professionally in the early '50s. She became really popular during the 1960s/70s in Mexico and Europe. She had a passionate affair with artist Frida Khalo, and dedicated her famous rendition of “la llorona “ to the heartbreak she felt after they parted ways.

According to chavelavargasfilms.com, “she challenged mainstream Mexican morals by dressing in men’s clothing while she sang songs intended for men to woo women with incredible passion – and refused to change the pronouns”

Chavela was known for moving audiences to tears with her powerful singing. The way she portrays sorrow in her voice is heart wrenching. Big recommend , I’m always gonna talk about my fellow Mexican queer artists!!!

Spotlight: Con el cuarteto Lara Foster / Chavela Vargas (1961) by Chavela Vargas

I really don't have the words to go into this with the reverence Chavela deserves, so instead I'll just say that I find her incredible and that this is so so gorgeous, because that's the truth of it. This is an enchanting record, sure to bring forth chills, and that's all on Chavela's incredible perfomance. Pointing to a few tracks in particular is a daunting task when they're all so good, but of course her rendition of La Llorona is unavoidable and just beautiful, as are La Niña Isabel, Manzanita and perhaps especially Paloma Negra, though I cannot reiterate enough how good this is from beginning to end. The music really, really speaks for itself.
