A Little Postal Cheer

How do people even get pen pals? It looks fun but also seems scary if that makes sense

I get you! There’s always going to be a bit of risk when it comes to giving your address out on the internet. If you’re super worried, but also keen to start exchanging letters and postcards, you can rent a post office box (P.O. box) to have your mail sent to.

If you don’t have a P.O. box, you might look to ask your penpal to see if they’re alright with starting out with just email exchanges, until you can get a sense of them. If you don’t get a genuine good feeling about it, don’t feel bad if you decide to not share your mailing address. You are not obliged to give anything out if you don’t feel safe.

As for finding a penpal, there are some communities out there dedicated to helping you connect with others! As always, please read the rules of the community and abide by the etiquette. You’ll need to register for a Reddit account to get started.

For those of you who are minors, please check with your parents/guardian/family before you give your address away, they might not be as enthusiastic as you might be. If it's a problem, a P.O. box might be a solution! Or, penpalling is not a strictly snail mail if the circumstances don’t allow it to be! You could find yourself an email penpal, instead. 

It’s a cultural exchange after all and it’s certainly not limited to the old school form!

As part of the r/randomactsofcards for reddit, I like to create watercolor postcards to send to people. This person asked for either Minecraft or Chris Pratt, so I figured why not combine the two into an awesome card. I am used to working on an 11x17 or larger format, but this one is roughly the size of a standard postcard, so getting the small details into the image was difficult; I decided to keep it as simple as possible for the image so we can see 90% and let our brains subconsciously fill in the other 10%, such as the mixed pixels on the center creeper, folds in the clothing, ext.

I also liked the idea for this because I wanted to play with wet on wet with heavy pigment for the nebula background. A little bit of masking fluid for Rocket, the Enderman, and some stars kept them from being colored in.
