A bit of a hot take and I might change it, but it is the former Elder of Fire from before Rezek or Frifer went into the scene. I didn't want to make it too old though, so I need feedback whether Rezek would have seen its reign as Elder firsthand or not because that might be a problem. So uh. Here's a thing I wrote as an introduction to maybe a story because I'm not writing this all over again:

Anything that would have shaken the perfectly crafted worldview around it would have been enough to send the entire structure crumbling.

And crumble it did.

Fire-5, raised under the Malice, was sure an odd one from the start. It had an unusually optimistic attitude for a Wizzrobe half of whose waking hours were spent being beat for misbehaviour. No birch from the Elders was ever able to beat the enthusiasm out of it. Not permanently, at least.

Fire-5 was a maddeningly inattentive student, always looking for another way, or a workaround; always out of the box. Sneaking out to stargaze or even stealing from the little stash of wildberries the Elder of Lightning kept were not out of question. After a while, it got so good the Elders nearly stopped noticing its endeavours altogether.

When it was not allowed to use its rod for purposes outside of training, it resorted to secretly casting magic with its hands, the sheer glee of seeing things burn keeping it well ahead of its peers. And that same glee was what accidentally hauled it into the position of Elder of Fire. Or at least that was the best guess it had.<<<

Totally didn't do all that in one writing spree, nooo,,,

With that, WE HAVE A PYROMANIAC and also probably insane. Like, it would be the cool uncle, but that kind of uncle who would bring Ashen to Hyrule Castle to hide the Elder's rods as a bonding activity

Fwheri got hauled into being the Elder as it was very easy for Ganon to manipulate. It straight up killed the former Elder in a fight. After some time, Fwheri also began to break away from the Calamity's control enough to cause chaos, but still do whatever the Calamity wanted. Because it all happened way before Link woke up, there wasn't anything to do, so the Calamity didn't pay as much attention to whatever they were doing to kill boredom

It also had a very weird situationship with the Elder of Lightning that sprung after Fwheri got a hold on elixirs one time, I might elaborate on that someday

After 7 years of being Elder, one fateful day it was tasked to retrieve a newborn Fire Wizzrobe from somewhere around Illumeni Plateau. Due to a combo of the baby, getting separated and the Malice being weaker, it broke free and ran for Tanagar Canyon. After that I imagine they hid in the cave that would become the TotK Tanagar Canyon West Cave before inevitably being found by the Calamity. Baby Wizzrobe fucking dies TM and in a pretty long chase-fight Fwheri gets cornered in the Yiga Hideout and falls into the pit

THE DEPTHS (I used it as a shortcut for why it knows Dinraal, but I feel it makes it a little too OP)

After falling into the Pit, it traversed the Depths for almost a year. There, it found the Cliff Bargainer Statue and with its guidance, it stumbled upon Dinraal, who was kind enough to hear it out (in botw I headcanoned that Dinraal flew out of Death Mountain because flying out of the clouds was lame lmao)

Ever since (so for the next 10 years) it's been either flying with Dinraal, which caused it to be almost constantly overloaded on magic, or lurking around Hyrule Ridge and sometimes its corresponding sky islands. It eventually came back to Hyrule Castle for the Elder of Lighting (aforementioned situationship), but Ganon was on high guard, and it got the chest scar from the Elder itself as a result.

I don't want it to get too much into TotK before the actual story, so Fwheri didn't really do or learn anything in the Depths or the sky islands besides documenting a few things it saw and setting up a little hut. It didn't do any lore related things.

how long did ratc take you to plan & write? i see you published it over a year or so on ao3 but i’m curious about the planning & drafts too. ratc reignited my love for fics & inspired me to write as well but i’m spending foreevverrr in the planning stage and actually writing is so tedious (perfectionist) & i wonder if i’ll ever get to the point of writing something as detailed and fleshed out as ratc especially w other commitments like uni

follow up question, is there a particular book, series or piece of media that majorly inspires your writing?

fantastic question.

one of the big things folks ask me when they approach me about RATC is how i kept track of it and how long it took to plan. The answer to both is basically a month or so - from posting chapter 1 to chapter 33 took exactly a year (I planned it that way!) with a few months off when a relationship ended and I lost my job (that was UNPLANNED).

RATC became the beast that it is by answering questions I kept asking myself. I didn't set out with the answers already in hand - I kind of discovered them along the way. I'd ask things like 'what do I want to express with claggor?' and i'd answer 'well, a dude with depression who everyone thinks is dumb but is incredibly emotionally intelligent'. that leads to the question 'ok, what does that look like on the sumprats?' and the answer was as an assistant captain, and showing all the things that displayed how an emotionally intelligent guy would be really valuable to a team situation.

it's a trick i learned from professional tabletop DMs - worldbuilding is essentially asking yourself questions and being honest with the answers. that coupled with the fact that I knew the ending sequence - I wanted the Sumprats to come back from down five goals in the final game, the 'won't back down' crowd singing sequence, and Cait wearing Vi's journey - meant that I could basically lay out breadcrumbs that would pay off down the line. when the fic began to expand past my initial 9 chapter expectation (queue mocking laughter) I kept myself focused by completing what i called mini arcs - Caitlyn finding herself in the team and Vi protecting her with Claggor is act 1, Ahri coming back and them starting a romantic relationship is act 2, etc. etc. etc.

so, to say that I started off planning it isn't accurate. what's more accurate is that I decided on my endpoint and discovered all the little places the story could go along the way. it worked for me, and my adhd, and it worked for me because i loved writing it and wanted to keep revisiting the world.

as for the tedium of writing - one of the keys for me is that i really wanted it done, and had fun doing it. if it had ever been tedious for me i don't think i would've been able to power through, so it kept being fun for me.

regarding the series/books I read: I read a ton of romance novels because life is hard and i want to read warmth, but stephen king, dennis lehanne, and nora roberts (lol what a trio) have all been big influences on the way i characterize folks. my favourite TV show of all time is The Wire, but I love Chernobyl and the first season of True Detective and the Godfather trilogy - the media i tend to really cherish is media that makes me think, or makes me shut my brain off. it's weird that way.

The entire subplot about how Gerson was essentially brought back to life in the dark world only for a fleeting moment to both write a letter to his son and to pass his knowledge down to Susie has me thinking REALLY maliciously...........

Because the entire reason Gerson was temporarily resurrected was because his hammer and dust/ashes were brought into Alvin's office prior to the dark fountain being made........................
