going insane thinking about franziska being the one who asks maya to channel gregory first. i don't even know when this would take place but it's just making me bonkers so i had to share
to franziska, gregory edgeworth is the man her father killed; to gregory, franziska von karma is the only thing that didn't leave his son completely alone with his murderer. why would you say this to me
like, listen. i can't find the screenshots right now but in aai, franziska actually defends miles from her father by very gently and masterfully derailing the conversation from one thing to the other, and that is where i fully understood Why she was the older sister. it's not just the inferiority complex and not just the competition - it's her being the first child in that family chronologically, her being the one that teaches miles how to properly respond, how to live in this household, how to be a von karma. gregory edgeworth would probably be at least a little grateful to her, and gratitude would be the last thing she'd expect. jesus christ what a concept
#fuck!!!!!!!#again. why would you say that to me#raysanswers#gregory edgeworth#franziska von karma#ace attorney

Give me your worst aa take
worst one objectively as in "i'm wrong and i know it": i don't care for godot. i just don't feel any soul in his character, if i'm being honest. he Should be interesting to me and he has an absolutely amazing design but his writing just isn't convincing to me. sparks zero emotion.
some other bad ones, in various ways:
- maya fey should have gotten her own beanix arc after aa3. girl remake that system and refuse the burden of being the master after it was so cruelly thrust upon you!!! makes no sense that she made her own calculated decision to leave fey&co in aa1 (rejection what her dead family authority figure told her to do) but didn't do the exact same thing with being khurain master
- aa4 sucks in a good and tasteful way that i can appreciate. aa5 and 6 are somewhat tolerable but suck in an entirely bad and boring way
- they should have given franziska an even bigger whip in aa5. and put her in aa5 but that's not a bad take that's a brilliant take

i’m thinking about mvk right now wtf happened to him? why is he like that? who did this to him? what do you think his tragic backstory is i know he has one and i need to know right now
oh anon you're gonna wish you didn't send this ask.
what i think people often forget when trying to understand certain characters is that characters are a part of a story first and a person second. to understand manfred and some other related things, let's look at this from the beginning, specifically, from the first "evil" major character we get introduced to (and by evil i mean someone the protagonist opposes) - miles edgeworth.
miles edgeworth is introduced to us as the demon prosecutor, the guy who uses dirty tricks in court, is famous for being ruthless and thinks everyone should be punished, a guy who strives for perfection is his job as a prosecutor. that brings us to a point where we think miles edgeworth represents something the justice system overall should not be - biased, devoid of empathy, driven by a perfect record and a desire for a good career instead of the genuine desire to find the truth. the story could as well have made us defeat edgeworth because of that - that approach is not needed in the court, so we expose him for some kind of crime and get him fired, goodbye, who's the next character going to be? however, the writers make the decision to humanize him, make him not just a character that represents a wrong idea but a person who has a backstory and some good in his heart, a person with a pretty good moral code, actually, a nerd, a friend, a man. this is where we start to question what exactly made him like this - this is why miles gets a tragic backstory. he is meant to be explained, he is meant to be human, he is meant to be more.
so manfred von karma becomes the answer. he is the reason, he is the influence, the part of miles's life that made him like this and the part that he starts to oppose. manfred von karma is an asset, a tool we are given to understand edgeworth better and draw some conclusions: "hey, maybe the guy wasn't, like, evil and demonic, he was manipulated as a kid, you know". manfred is like a mirror of edgeworth, which is a tool one can see frequently in ace attorney writing. there are characters that represent one character trait of another character, hyperbolized and extended. damon gant is edgeworth's authority mirror, representing what could happen if miles went from cutting salaries to grabbing more and more power to himself. manfred is miles's perfection mirror (self-explanatory).
what do we get from this, then? manfred von karma is undeniably linked to a more important character, appears for one single case (if we don't count aai) and serves one purpose - get the idea across. "don't get too focused on perfection, kids! this is a job that determines other people's lives, and to manipulate the verdict in order to serve your own selfish purposes is yucky!". manfred is a symbol first, person second, that's why he doesn't get a backstory.
manfred von karma is not just a man - it's what every prosecutor could become. a prosecutor gets a high salary, which the game establishes, and that salary depends on the amount of cases won, or, if i'm wrong, one's reputation depends on that, and the reputation causes bias. in such an objectively terrible system any prosecutor would slowly go from "i'm going to find the truth!" to "i'm going to win", and manfred went there a little too much. manfred's backstory is his habitat, he is the product of the system. with every case won and every close call, every paycheck earned, with all the competition in the field empathy and common sense leaves him - it gets to a point where a penalty causes him to commit murder. he is not a sane person at the moment of the crime - he is quite literally delusional thinking it was some kind of fate that the gun was there. he is what happens when a man loses himself in his career, what happens when the law is about money and success and not fairness, what can happen to anyone and should not happen.
so, to me, manfred does not need a backstory, apart from the one i mentioned above - he on his own is one.
but let's imagine this is the real world for a second and ignore the fictional, ideal aspect of it all. it's quite definitely possible manfred was somehow abused, but do i think it HAS to be so? no. a person does not need to be traumatized or a victim to grow up shitty. he could simply be spoiled, actually, with all of the wealth he clearly has. to prove my point, imagine a scenario where you raise a child with nothing but praise. you give it all the love and care, feed it, cherish it, but a child is curious by nature. eventually, it will do something bad, like pinch you or hit another child. you, the universally loving parent, still give it love and feed it candy after it does the bad thing, and you continue to do so. with nothing but love and care, the child will grow up with a defected sense of right and wrong, selfish, entitled, unempathetic.
point is - i don't find a tragic backstory to be a necessary thing for manfred's character. i don't think he needs a backstory at all.
however, that is not to say i'm somehow trying to prove anon wrong. theorizing and coming up with explanations IS fun and good. i'm just giving my personal view of his character here.

not to sound like an idiot but what's that thing that starts with U that you're into and what form is it in? (show, movie, manga?)
it's a very cool murder mystery visual novel called umineko no naku koro ni! somehow it manages to be about undying classics like love and truth and war while also being an amazing anti-capitalist story about queerness and misogyny. it has amazing music and forces you to stop only accepting sterile and "un-problematic" media in order to develop your own opinions and views. it also ruins your life forever with the toxic ouroboros yuri and everyone doing everything wrong all the time. there isn't a single character that is good or comes from good. it's a story that was killed, cut open and toyed with, resurrected and killed again over and over. you should read it it's really fun. the sprites are great too look at this fucking thing
[id: original sprite of beatrice from umineko with a gun, smiling. end of id]
#i have spent the entirety of today with a notebook theorizing bc that is what this fucking game told me to do#and i loved it#raysanswers#umineko naku koro ni#umineko

"oh my family? well.. my dad died when I was really young no like it doesn't even bother me I was so young it's fineee.. my mother left a while after so it was just me and my sister- no no don't worry I met my mom again after a.. few years and uhm.. well.. yeah she died. oh and my sister died too but it's okay because I met this cool guy but he kind of viewed me as a replacement of my sister and then like ghosted me for a while but we're close now! yeah we met when I was accused of my sisters murder! no haha its not that serious don't worry it happens all the time.. any other family? well there's my aunt and my cousin! my cousin is great we are like sisters, super close..! I mean I'm practically raising her now, yknow? oh why? well. her mother tried to frame me for murder a few times. yeah apparently there was something with half sisters..? one of them wanted me dead because she had beef with my now dead older sister. oh that guy I mentioned, yeah he dated one or.. was it both or just one of them? I don't really know, I was unconscious for it if I'm honest yeah but it's fine I'm fine I'm like 19 now so I'm an adult and I should be responsible at this age anyway so it doesnt either bother me, yeah. anyway.. do you have any family? :) " <- pov ur on a date with maya fey
i would pay real money to be her therapist and hear all that in a professional setting instead. maya i'm so sorry but i would not want to date you. i can't deal with all that. someone in the tags will probably say "well i can. MOVE" and i will respect that
#great summary btw. this really is her life huh#what is it with 19yo girls being tragic#<- umineko fan#raysanswers#wait i forgot to say hi. hello lanamia person#(probably)

Spill the tea what bad takes
you know when people are too busy crafting a perfectly morally correct stance on a character that they forget how characters are meant to be engaged with. like man i feel like so many posts i see about "evil"/murderous/manipulative characters are simply about what we should feel about them and if they deserve sympathy/understanding/etc, as if the characters are, like, real people that we know and need to state a public opinion on. characters are made so that you can blindly give your entire heart to them, let them mould it and give it back to you changed. okay. a character is an idea and a message. people need to read umineko smh
also saw other non-fandom stuff but i will not talk about that ever for the sake of my personal fucking sanity

OKAY listen I've wondering this for a while while reading your AA5 posts - which are hilarious, by the way, I like the game on some level but it's a TERRIBLE AA game and ignores canon so badly, so it's fun to see you poke holes in it. But I have to ask - what do you MEAN Simon Blackquill makes no sense as a character? Is this just the general dislike for AA5?
OH no i mean it as a compliment. i mean it in the most affectionate way possible. it's just that, you know. he is a convicted murderer prosecutor samurai with a pet hawk who threatened to hit me with a wet noodle (?) forty times and goes on walks mid-trial with his detective buddy who electroshocks him sometimes. he also told phoenix wright his face was astonishing and presented an updated autopsy report unashamedly. he is doing what edgeworth couldn't

they both knew each other before they were who they are and they both knew each other at their worst. the idea of Miles not helping Phoenix after he gets disbarred is ridiculous when you look at the basics of either of their characters. like phoenix would 100% want miles to Not help but there is no way in hell that Miles is just going to let Phoenix stew in the horrors and not try to help him. to know every form and flaw of a person and still want to love them is so. Gggghhahhhhh
- lanamia hiya
lanamia person how is everything you say so fucking CORRECT???? I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS!!!! I HAVE BEEN FUCKING SAYING THIS!!!! miles-chateredaprivateplane-edgeworth would NOT just ignore phoenix's disbarment and distance himself when their whole thing is helping each other time and time again. phoenix very obviously is in a depressive and distant state in the first few weeks of his disbarment and becomes more hard to read/reach out to overall, but miles edgeworth is an unstoppable force when he wants to be. he dragged phoenix to fancy european hotels multiple times a year for "legal help" bc phoenix wouldn't be able to refuse a friend in need and edgeworth knew that would work every time. seven year gap means sm to me because they are forced to, like, communicate outside of court and be friends properly. stopping now bc if i don't then i never will. lanamia person you're so fucking right you have no idea

i'm agender! i think... i have these times where i experience a lot of gender dysphoria and try to present more masculine most of the time but overall, i just don't understand gender. it does not exist to me because i said so. so yeah, you're right, if one uses trans as an umbrella term!

When the make Acr Attorney 7/AA : Athena Cykes they should let Phoenix be the co-counsel for the first case only. They should put Edgeworth in a coma. And also give Trucy a bracelet so she can be her true superweirdgirl self.
honestly? speak your truth, anon
#put edgeworth in a coma 2023#i agree with the sentiment though. the focus should be on athena and her own damn cases#not bringing old characters back#ace attorney#raysanswers

yeah okay life advice me doc. tbh I don't even know if I have any issues. (THIS IS A POST FROM THE LANAMIA ANON🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣)
1. reject the increase in the speed of life that social media brings with it's existence and teach yourself to get lost in a singular activity again. give yourself the gift of a full immersion in art: dust yourself in flour while baking bread, put on a silly apron and roll your jeans while making pottery, make popcorn before you watch a movie, etc
2. you can always make a sandwich with mozzarella and tomato slices but make sure to do it with two slices of bread and fry them on the frying pan for a while with the cheese and tomatoes already in it so that it's all hot and melted and tastes very good. it's so good i'm telling you it's my favorite thing
3. return to the basics when you feel unmotivated to do art. by that i mean both drawing still life and sitting down on the floor and doing some fucked up finger painting. deadass just free yourself it's shapes and colors
4. this blog would be nothing without you. i really appreciate the discussions we have on here and it feels like some kind of special light hearted episode in the weird show that is my life. you are a very nice person

I found that in aa5/6 the sprites for the new characters look really good or flattering but for the old characters, they suck hard. like Phoenix, Trucy, Pearl, Apollo, Maya and Miles all look just Off. But like Jinxie or Athena look really good to me? I don't really understand why this is because like Phoenix, Maya, Pearl and Miles all got redesigns???? but there's just something so uncanny to them? I don't feel like that at all with the new characters but maybe that's just coz I don't have an old frame of reference..?
-lanamia opinion hour
LANAMIA OPINION HOUR (the crowd cheers so loudly the entire town can hear it) (i'm the crowd) (hello lanamia person)
a person just commented on one of my posts saying that the reason for that is because they relied on the 2d sprites, so. yeah. you're right. i do still feel like they could have done a better job despite the complications of trying to recreate designs??? honestly, i think *i* could have done a better job. capcom hire me and fire yourselves
