My girlfriend was sexually assaulted a couple weeks ago, and I was almost assaulted myself stopping the assailant.

We were at a concert—Born of Osiris, Reaping Asmodeia, et al @ Black Circle—and Kaleigh had to step outside because the flashing lights were too much for them; they were dissociating, and they'd almost passed out. I tried to stay out there with them, but I couldn't stay outside in the cold. But they said they needed it — the vestibular shock was helping them come to.

After the show ended, my friends and I stepped outside to find Kaleigh dissociating very badly, and a strange woman with her hand on Kaleigh's breasts. The woman was very drunk, and claimed she was trying to "talk about the Lord". Kaleigh was wearing her red Anita Velveeta "TERFs Will Not Get Into Heaven" shirt, and I guess that pissed her off enough that she thought she had the right to grope my girlfriend.

When I stopped the assailant, she tried to reach for my breasts and said she wanted to talk about the Lord with me. I warned her that I had pepper spray; my friends came over to protect me as well.

After we got her to leave, we were too traumatized to do anything other than go home. We didn't get the chance to go to the merch tables, which extra sucked because BoO and RA are two of Kaleigh's favorite bands. My friends had invited me specifically, but when I saw the lineup for the concert, I had to let Kaleigh know so they could come along…

Before the assault happened, Kaleigh and I were starting to get to the point where we could cuddle each other without asking. Previously, Kaleigh was very big on explicit consent for almost everything, but for about a month or so we had gotten to the point where I could come up to them while they were lying down and start cuddling (or vice versa), and that not be a problem. And even before that, if either of us asked for hugs or cuddles, rarely would it be the case that the other had to say no.

But since the assault, they've been so touch-averse…

I love Kaleigh more than anything else in the world. I understand that they have their needs, and I appreciate them communicating their boundaries.

But it hurts. It hurts being this touch-starved (especially given my own trauma from the event), but moreover it hurts me to see them hurting like this, where what used to comfort both of us now brings them pain.
