“Convict’s Thrilling Escape: Leaps From Fast Train,” Toronto Globe. November 25, 1918. Page 08. --- Man With Bad Record in Toronto Fools County Constable and Flees Near Shannonville - Recaptured at Napanee --- John Gowans, who was on his way to Kingston penitentiary, where he was to commence a second five-year sentence for housebreaking, escaped from the custody of County Constable Frank Brown near Shannonville on Saturday morning. Gowans made his escape by obtaining permission to go to a lavatory, and then by leaping from the window of the train after he had slammed the door upon Constable Brown.
Gowans was the housebreaker who entered the house of the widow of the late Dr. Fenton, and assaulted her when she endeavored to hold him until the arrival of police. He was later arrested, and only recently completed his sentence. Judge Winchester on Wednesday sentenced Gowans to five years’ imprisonment upon convictions registered against him for housebreaking in Parkdale.
The convict was recaptured at Napanee on Saturday just before midnight.

TITLE:  One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
SETTING:  A Mental Institution in Oregon
PERIOD:  1960s
PRODUCER:  Michael Douglas
READ  BY:  Miloš Forman
GENRE:  Comedy/Drama
COVERAGE  DATE:  11-19-1975
LOG LINE:  A criminal is sent to a mental instituion to undergo evaluation, but soon  discovers that the patients here are mistreated/abused by the staff.
SUMMARY: Set in Oregon in 1963, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest follows Randall McMurphy, a recidvist criminal who has been sent to a nearby mental instituion after pleading insanity despite actually not being mentally ill. He has a tough time getting settled in with the other patients, but eventually gets more and more comfortable as time goes on. He enjoys messing with them in a bantering kind of way, and quickly establishes dominance over them by becoming a leader to them. The floor is run by a group of nurses, with Nurse Ratched in charge of everyone. The strict, cold nurse is an intimitating figure to the patients, all except McMurphy. Seeking to undermine her power and helping his new friends break out of her spell, McMurphy goes on to great lengths to anger the nurse, including breaking out, starting protests within the room, inciting fights, etc. Despite this, McMurphy ends up on the receiving end of punishments, including having items taken away such as cuggarettes, receiving electro-shock therapy, and eventaully subcumbs to being lobotomized, ultimately stripping away the person who once was.
COMMENTS: Book adaptations are either a hit or miss nowadays. Many fail, and very few slip through the cracks, becoming gems. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is without question, a gem, based solely on its screenplay.
The plot, as described above is great. It is very different from Ken Kessey’s book of the same name, from character appearances to the point of view. However, that’s not to say that it still works, because it does. The plot is clear-cut, told in a way that can be divided up into three acts based on the script.
Each character in this film is vastly unique from one another, with each having their own identity. What sets each person, whether it’s a nurse or a patient, apart form one another isn’t just their appearances, but the way they speak, their mannerisms, the way they react to certain things, etc. Since it’s a mental institute, there really is no such a thing as a “specific” demographic involved here. Instead, it’s a hodgepodge of different people of different cultures, heights, sizes and most importantly, mental state. Each patient (Besides the protagonist, McMurphy) all have something wrong to them, whether it’s Billy Bibbit, a suicidal man with a stutter that prevents him from expressing himself, or Chief, the 7 foot Native American mute, each person has something to them. In the script, there are about 15-20 characters who have some sort of significant role throughout, and it’s amazing to see how each person interacts with one another, given who they are.
The dialogue to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is solid as well. Conversations between two or more people set up for some interesting subplots, which is a result of, as mentioned before, the wide arsenal of characters created in this screenplay. The dialogue  that mostly sticks out are the ones that are between McMurphy and someone else. His personality reults in clashes almost 90% of the time with the other characters, which comes in the form of what he says and does. There are also some great quotes that come out of it, one of them being the last bit of dialogue before the movie ends when Chief finally puts down McMurphy, telling him, “You’re coming with me.” It’s an ending that is guaranteed to make you AT LEAST teary-eyed.
