Prince’s Legacy on the Minneapolis Music Scene

April 21, 2016 marked a national tragedy, Prince’s death.

Growing up in Minneapolis, Prince has always been a significant musical figure in my life. Prince greatly influenced the Minneapolis community through his daring musical experimentation, electrifying performances, and creative spirit.

At the time Prince was emerging, around the 80’s, he brought an unusually captivating sound to a relatively segregated city. Prince’s ex-bassist and childhood friend André Cymone on this says, “It’s funny to see ‘Purple Rain’ from that perspective, because you could almost take the audience and the whole vibe of that [first] performance and put it in that movie. It was just a really weird time,” Cymone said. “Everything was very eclectic. All the black people weren’t just into this, and all the white people weren’t into that. Everybody was just having a whole lot of fun, enjoying the experience.” Prince’s sound transcended racial boundaries and created a space for everyone to enjoy music and celebrate life.

As far as his sound goes, Prince defied any genre and took bold risks when experimenting with his music. As said in the New York Times, “Prince’s music had an immediate and lasting influence: among songwriters concocting come-ons, among producers working on dance grooves, among studio experimenters and stage performers. He sang as a soul belter, a rocker, a bluesy ballad singer and a falsetto crooner. His most immediately recognizable (and widely imitated) instrumental style was a particular kind of pinpoint, staccato funk, defined as much by keyboards as by the rhythm section. But that was just one among the many styles he would draw on and blend, from hard rock to psychedelia to electronic music. His music was a cornucopia of ideas: triumphantly, brilliantly kaleidoscopic.”

Even former President Obama would agree, saying,“Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent.” He added, “He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer. ‘A strong spirit transcends rules,’ Prince once said — and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative.”

Prince also made a conscious effort to promote local sound at Paisley Park. He often called The Current, a local radio station supporting emerging artists, to discover new sounds and promote local artists. He would also surprise locals with impromptu shows and eclectic performances. My mom still reminisces on the days she would dance with Prince until the late hours of the night.

I didn’t understand the magnitude of Prince’s death on the community until I went back to Paisley Park and saw the mile long memorial of fan artwork. Ranging from murals, poetry, to personal letters, it was obvious Prince impacted a lot of people. He touched the hearts of so many people and his presence will be forever cherished. Although Prince may be physically gone, his legacy and spirit will live forever in Minneapolis. His vibrant and genre defying music has had a tremendous influence on the biggest stars, as well as transforming the local Minneapolis music scene.
