I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or I'm just crazy, but the first time I watched S2 Selene and Rant's relationship made me uncomfortable because there seemed to be a major imbalance between them. She's providing him with a roof and help, which in almost any other story would have made it seem like Rant was taking advantage of her, but the way they both behaved always told me that it was Selene who was extorting Rant. They just had vibes of dubious consent, you know? Like Selene was making it clear that the only reason she was helping him was because she wanted to have sex with him, The 'feelings' were secondary and perhaps a way to manipulate Rant.

Then we get to the point where Selene isn't Selene, the whole mess between her and the dragon. Her messing with Rand and the others' dreams, and I... I never stopped seeing Rant as a victim.

All this discussion about Rant being a terrible person for cheating on Ergwin and all I see is someone who was unknowingly exposed to emotional manipulation and emotional abuse (and possibly physical because, again, the first thing I noticed was that there seemed to be sexual coercion)and there is no one on his side to listen to him or to talk to. I don't want to pull the "if we reverse their gender..." card, but I think if Rant were a woman and Selene were a man, everyone would more easily see how messed up their dynamic was. Hell, even S3 Rant spends a good chunk of time with an 'I can fix her!' mentality.

I think that was a very intentional reading of the Rand & Lanfear dynamic. 'Selene' was the person who had the power in the interactions between her and Rand, and we learn that it's even more extreme than we realized when we find out that she's Lanfear. And she never stops manipulating him -- it's lies from start to finish. First, she pretends that she isn't Lanfear, and then she pretends that she isn't as bad as the stories claim and that she could be turned to the good.

And, if you go back and rewatch the Rand & Selene scenes, there are hints there that pre-Lanfear Mierin Sedai was lying to Lews Therin about herself as well, which Rand calls her out on in 3x08 when he says that LTT broke things off with her for the same reasons that he is.

Rand is intentionally kept in the dark and powerless by Lanfear as long as she can manage, until she finally goes too far and does something that enables Egwene to tip Rand off to the extent of Lanfear's cruelty. It's in 3x08 that Rand is finally able to grab control of their dynamic (and the first thing he does with that control is push her away and let her get tossed out of his mind).

It's an interesting idea! I think rather than making her actually Birgitte, they would maybe be their own heroes but who have a love story that is tied together in a similar way as Birgitte and Gaidal in the books. Because it makes sense (as we saw with Uno) that some of the Heroes of the Horn are already spun out into the world (Mat being another example and, in the books anyway though not completely confirmed for the show but I assume it's still true, Rand/the Dragon is another Hero who was already spun out) in order to help shape the ending of the Age.
