my little project just now has been to approximate a smart speaker by plugging my old pixel 4a into a clock radio from 2011 and remote controlling the music using my normal phone via my spotify account uhhh total additional cost $11 cuz i did buy a new usb c charger for the 4a but other than that no additional costs. good project if u want the semi autonomous music playback of a smart speaker but resent that they r functionally wiretaps and also it reduces ewaste 👍

Heart Toy major Update

So i updated the Heart toy first the updates to the Heart suite (the part that was in the previous version)

New Features and fixes:

Help Menu Improvements: The Help Menu is now scrollable for better navigation. It includes more extensive and up-to-date information to guide users through the new features and mechanics.

Total Reset Button: Added a Total Reset button to quickly reset all settings and restore the heart to its original state. This clears any modifications from heart rate, irregularities, and medications.

Critical Fail Mechanic: A Critical Fail mechanic has been added to both CPR and Defibrillation. If a dice roll resolves to 1, the heart enters SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) or fibrillation, adding a new challenge to these life-saving actions.

Immortality Button: The Immortality button has been introduced. When activated, Immortality disables heart stoppage due to extreme high or low heart rates, This keeps the heart going, even under extreme conditions.

Breath Hold Mechanic: A Breath Hold button has been added as a new mechanic. The heart rate rises by 60 BPM, then lowers by 60 BPM after the maximum hold time of 100 seconds or upon pressing the button again. Irregularity and PVC chance gradually increase by about during the breath hold.

Refined Heart Animations: Heartbeat animations have been refined for better realism. Now, heartbeats closer together will show less contraction, adding a smoother visual flow when observing the heart’s rhythm.

UI Refinements Almost All UI elements are not minimisable with a press of a button making observing the heart mech easier, also the zoom and size reset mecanics are now avaliable on Android in the form of buttons(rotation is still a two fingered touch gesture)

Natural Vital Calming Mechanic: A Natural Vital Calming mechanic has been added. If the heart is in a moderate zone (moderate irregularity, SVT chance, and heart rate), the heart will gradually return to baseline resting rate (60 BPM), while reducing irregularity and SVT chance to 0. Medication administration pauses this mechanic for 30 seconds, preventing natural calming during treatment.

Seemingly overnight, everyone’s talking about Temu (pronounced “tee-moo”), an online shopping app that boasts deals that seem too good to be true, like $17 wireless earbuds, $1 “gold” necklaces and $23 wedding dresses.

Over 50 million Americans have downloaded Temu since it launched state-side in September 2022, after it gained traction with expensive Super Bowl ads promising to let you “shop like a billionaire.”

Today, Temu is the most popular shopping app in the U.S. behind Amazon. But most of us don’t know much about the app’s true origins. Reader Daniel Mayer asked an important question, “Is [Temu] something we should be concerned about?”

So, I did some digging. And as it turns out, yes, you absolutely should be. Here’s what I found:

Where did Temu come from?

This isn’t some fly-by-night operation. Temu is based in Boston, Massachusetts, by PDD Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PDD). PDD is headquartered in Shanghai, China.

PDD also owns the e-commerce platform Pinduoduo headquartered in — you guessed it — China. So, Temu is a Communist China-based app and site.

What you need to know before using Temu

First, you’re buying goods directly from manufacturers in China and other parts of the world. That’s why shipping times are often 12 days or longer. The prices are low because the goods are cheap. The pictures of what you see advertised may not be what you actually get.

Temu’s BBB rating is 2.21/5. Reviews at TrustPilot are interesting, with 38% 5-star reviews and 41% 1-star reviews.

But that’s not the worst of it.

Temu is downright dangerous.

The app is a clever, pervasive digital stalker. As you shop, Temu monitors your activity on other apps, tracks your notifications and location and changes settings.

🛑 It gets worse. Temu gains full access to all your contacts, calendars and photo albums, plus all your social media accounts, chats and texts. In other words, literally everything on your phone. This is scary

No shopping app needs this much control, especially one tied to Communist China. If you’re using Temu, delete the app from your phone ASAP.

On iPhone, Long-press an app, then tap Remove App > Delete App. Tap Delete to confirm.

On Android, touch and hold an app, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.

Pro tip: If you downloaded Temu, to be safe from Chinese spies, you really need to do a full factory reset.

But wait, there’s more! Temu’s sister app was removed from Google Play because of malware.

Do not buy from this company, or use their app!

Hey You Should Check Out Freegal!

I'm surprised I've never seen a post on this service before (Or if I did I don't remember it, but if you know of one please send it my way and I'll add it to the queue here!).

Just this week I was clued into Freegal at one of my local libraries and I love it! It's music streaming service somewhat similar to Spotify or Tidal that libraries can get subscriptions for. Not only is it all free for library card holders to use, not only can you stream music with no ads at all, you can download a limited number of songs every week. For free. No weird rules that restrict you by making it only accessible through the app or anything. The MP3 file goes right into your device and it's yours to move or copy or burn to a CD or WHATEVER non-commercial use you wanna do with it!

To use it, you'll just need a card from a participating library (You can search for your library on the Freegal website) and an email address to make an account. You can access it through your browser on a desktop/laptop, or there's an app you can download through your phone's app store.

If you're like me and want to stop relying on music streaming services, Freegal is a great place to start! The exact limit differs between libraries as far as I'm aware, but it lets you download three to five songs a week, resetting on Monday. Even after you've hit your weekly limit, you can still add songs to a wishlist to have a convenient place for everything you want to download in the future!

I'd say one of the only downsides is that the selection isn't as big as the other services like Spotify. You're probably not going to find many of your favorite indie artists on there, but there's still a really decent selection and you're more than likely going to find something you're familiar with and enjoy! Also the app is...a bit rough around the edges and slow to load things at times (at least on Android, I haven't seen it on an iPhone) but it's not too bad. Imo everything else makes up for it.

I hope this post is informative and that you all have cards to participating libraries! If you don't, consider looking around for other libraries close by! It's a great service that I highly encourage you take advantage of, and increased awareness and demand for it might encourage more libraries to participate!

I'm currently experiencing the issue that in the last 35min the (android mobile) app (German version in case that's relevant) repeatly (12-15 times) crashed (as in game freezes and suddenly I'm in the home screen of my phone) and it's becoming increasingly upsetting bc I CAN'T collect my daily season candles or my daily "days of nature" tickets, and in ca. half an our the daily reset (? is that what it's called?) is happening... 😡

And I can't report that over the app (if that's how it works) bc as I said the app is crashing...

... 🫤 I only have 7 days (of nature) left to collect 30 tickets

What's going on with the X-Men relaunch?

When they first used the Infinity Comic to reset Charles and Alex to their pre-Fall of X versions, I didn't think it was that big of a problem. Charles isn't appearing in comics at the moment, and the fact is that no one really cares about Alex Summers anyway. But Magneto is core cast of the flagship title. Fundamental alterations to his status quo need to be covered in that publication, not preempted by however many months in advance with digital only content that most readers will never even know exists. Even leaving aside inherent scumminess of paywalling required supplementary content, there's no indication anywhere in X-Men that you need to go open Marvel Unlimited if you want the full backstory.

This isn't the only mess they've gotten into with digital content since July. Previously, they spent two months inserting blank pages into the print and kindle editions of all of their comics, that could only be redeemed for a final page on the Marvel app. Before finally backtracking they spent two months fighting their fans on social media, and insisting that these pages were only fun bonus that you didn't have to worry about. Yet several titles used them to introduce their respective villains, and the X-Force relaunch chose to simply redact the actual final page of the issue, for phone readers only.

It's just not a fun way to read things. No one wants to have to put down a physical comic, or close out kindle, and then go open a separate app on their Apple/Android device to finish the story. Or to have to remember to check Marvel Unlimited every Tuesday for weekly backup strips to find out what's going on with the co-lead of the comic they're already paying for. I've seen it suggested that these amount to schemes by the publisher to get more people to install Marvel's various phone apps, and that's probably true, but whatever inanity is going on behind the scenes there is at least some measure of obligation on the part of the editors to not make the rollout so intrusive. The actual comics need to at least be readable.

you know what's really super awesome? I went to a place with overwhelmingly positive reviews to get my phone screen replaced and they fucked my whole shit up. my phone just factory reset itself and lost everything man. all my photos and videos from the past 5 years. no i dont have icloud it was an android. and now the sim card keeps disconnecting itself and it charges unreliably. i keep telling myself i could have just gone my merry way with a cracked phone screen and it would have been fine. which might be true but it was pretty badly cracked i could barely see anything on the top half of my display. the repair shop says they can reverse the repairs and refund me so I can have a busted screen AND no photos or contacts! isnt that great? i might just do it so i can at least afford a new phone since now ill have to start everyhting over from square one anyway

Stop! Have you checked your phone’s ad privacy settings recently? No? Here’s a guide. It’s from 2022 but I can confirm that as of November 2024 the Apple stuff is still correct.

Android:

Settings —> Privacy —> ads —> delete advertising ID

On older versions you might not be able to delete the ID, but can reset it and there should still be a toggle to opt out: do both of those things!

iOS:

Two things to take care of, here. One) Apple already makes each app ask permission, but you can still tell it to just not even let them ask:

Settings —> privacy —> Tracking —> toggle off ‘allow apps to request to track’.

Two) settings —> privacy —> scroll riiiiiight down —> Apple advertising —> toggle off personalised ads.

Samsung:

Settings —> privacy —> Customisation services —> ‘stop customising all devices’

Xiaomi:

Settings —> passwords and security —> Authorisation & revocation —> toggle off ‘MSA’

Why it Matters

‘The ad identifier is a string of letters and numbers that uniquely identifies your phone, tablet, or other smart device. It exists for one purpose: to help companies track you.

Third-party trackers collect data via the apps on your device. The ad ID lets them link data from different sources to one identity you. In addition, since every app and tracker sees the same ID, it lets data brokers compare notes about you. Broker A can buy data from broker B, then use the ad identifier to link those two datasets together. Simply, the ad ID is the key that enables a whole range of privacy harms: invasive 3rd-party profiling by Facebook and Google, pseudoscientific psychographic targeting by political consultants like Cambridge Analytica, and location tracking by the U.S. military.

Sometimes, participants in the data pipeline will argue that the ad ID is anonymous or pseudo-anonymous, not “personally identifying” information, and imply that it does not pose a serious privacy threat. This is not true in practice. First, the ad ID is commonly used to help collect data that is obviously personally identifiable, like granular location data. If you can see where a person works, sleeps, studies, socializes, worships, and seeks medical care, you don’t need their email address to help identify them. And second, an entire industry exists to help trackers link ad IDs to more directly identifying information, like email addresses and phone numbers. In a vacuum, the ad ID may be anonymous, but in the context of the tracking industry, it is a ubiquitous and effective identifier.

Disabling this ID makes it substantially harder for most advertisers and data brokers to track you. Tumblr, please help. I did a system update on my android phone and now everything is different.

My real issue is my wallpaper. I've had the same wallpaper for probably over 5 years now. It transfered over no problem from my old phone to my new phone. But the wallpaper reset now and I couldn't tell you exactly what the wall paper looked like now but I know in my gut that I'll know it when I see it.

Like, for the wallpaper to transfer to a new phone, the image has to be on my phone, right? I've already spent over an hour looking through my files for it (I really need to clean out my files, I have photos in my camera roll dating back to 2018).

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions or anything? I know it sounds really dumb but it's finals season and I'm already stressed and I'm genuinely getting upset at this.

(Also, if anyone knows how to move the app search bar from the bottom of the screen back to the top, that would be great)
