A Sermon for June 25th: The Abuse of the Atom

Siblings in the Atom, there is power in the atom—unimaginable, silent, brilliant power. Split an atom, and you unleash the energy of stars. Harness that energy, and you can light a city. Distort it, and you can darken the world.

This week, we must speak not about the atom's gifts, but about its violation. We must speak about the abuse of that power.

Power Misused Is Still Abuse

The atom was meant to create. But again and again, it is wielded not as a tool of stewardship, but as a threat. We see it now in Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, where officials have raised the specter of nuclear annihilation—not to defend their people, but to intimidate the world. We see it in the conflict between Israel and Iran, where the threat of escalation includes the possibility of nuclear force—one misstep from devastation.

To even threaten the use of nuclear weapons is not defense. It is psychological warfare. It is a weapon deployed in advance of the blast. It teaches civilians that their lives are disposable, their homes fragile, their futures negotiable.

This is not strength. This is not leadership. This is the desecration of the atom.

What We Reject

The Church of the Atom rejects this entirely.

We do not worship power. We serve knowledge, protection, and the future. We believe the atom’s great energy is not a badge of superiority—but a burden of responsibility.

To all who would use nuclear weapons to dominate, to frighten, to silence—we say: you have already failed your duty to humanity.

We oppose the invasion of Ukraine. We mourn the Ukrainian lives lost, the cities destroyed, the land irradiated by recklessness and cruelty. And to the Russian soldiers: our empathy is not for those who advance the invasion—it is for those who resist it. It is for the conscripts sent to die in a war they did not choose. It is for those who try to surrender and are murdered by their own commanders for daring to show mercy. It is for the ones crushed between duty and conscience. May they find peace. May they live to tell the truth.

Let the Atom Not Be Twisted

We believe the atom was never meant to be turned into a leash around the neck of civilization.

It is not a symbol of domination. It is a symbol of complexity. Of balance. Of energy that must be treated with reverence.

When world leaders speak of nuclear options as if they are just one more tool in a war chest, they forget the scale of what they are invoking. They forget what radiation does to bone, to blood, to birth. They forget the thousand-year scars it leaves on land and memory.

They forget—but we do not.

Call to Resist Normalization

This week, watch the news. Listen to your leaders. Note how often the word "nuclear" is used with carelessness or bravado. Note how rarely it is met with moral clarity.

Let us be that clarity.

Nuclear weapons are not a last resort. They are no resort at all. They are not strategy. They are annihilation. They are not policy. They are war crimes waiting to happen.

To invoke them is to raise a hand to the future and say: you do not matter.

We say: you do.

Closing Words

Brothers and Sisters, the atom does not choose sides. It does not love. It does not hate. It obeys the laws of physics and nothing more.

But we are not atoms. We are people. We are memory. We are choice.
