Don't Give Up on Your New Year's Resolutions – Keep Pushing Forward!
Shaina Tranquilino
January 24, 2024
Every year, as the clock strikes midnight and we bid farewell to the old year, millions of people around the world enthusiastically embrace the idea of making New Year's resolutions. These resolutions often revolve around self-improvement, whether it be losing weight, quitting bad habits, or pursuing personal goals. However, statistics show that by now, many individuals have already abandoned their resolutions. But don't lose hope! In this blog post, we'll explore why people tend to drop their resolutions and provide you with some valuable tips to help you stay motivated and committed throughout the year.
1. Reflect on your initial motivation: When we first set our New Year's resolutions, there is usually a strong sense of determination and excitement driving us forward. Unfortunately, as time progresses, these feelings tend to fade away. To combat this decline in motivation, take a moment to reflect on why you initially made those resolutions. Remind yourself of the positive changes you were hoping to achieve and how they would enhance your life. This reflection can reignite your passion and remind you of what truly matters.
2. Set realistic expectations: One common reason for abandoning resolutions is setting unrealistic goals from the start. It's important to remember that change takes time and effort. Break down your resolution into smaller, achievable milestones that act as stepping stones towards your ultimate goal. Celebrate each milestone reached; this will keep you motivated and encouraged along the way.
3. Find an accountability partner: Sharing your resolution with someone else can significantly boost your chances of success. By finding an accountability partner—a friend, family member, or colleague who shares similar aspirations—you create a support system where both parties hold each other accountable for staying on track. Regular check-ins can serve as reminders and encouragement during challenging times.
4. Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities: Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are bound to happen. Rather than viewing them as failures, consider these moments as valuable learning opportunities. Identify the reasons behind your setbacks and use them to adjust your approach moving forward. Remember that resilience and perseverance are key to achieving lasting change.
5. Celebrate small victories: Often, people become fixated on the end result of their resolutions, neglecting the progress they have made along the way. Celebrate each small victory—no matter how insignificant it may seem—as it signifies progress towards your ultimate goal. Rewarding yourself for milestones achieved will create a positive reinforcement loop, motivating you to keep going.
As we enter a new phase of the year, it's common for people to drop their New Year's resolutions due to various factors such as loss of motivation or setting unrealistic expectations. However, by reflecting on your initial motivation, setting achievable goals, finding an accountability partner, embracing setbacks as learning opportunities, and celebrating small victories, you can break free from this pattern! Don't give up on your resolutions; instead, keep pushing forward with determination and resilience. Remember that true change takes time, but the rewards will be worth the effort in the end!

Before I move on to The Flux in my Thirteen Era Rewatch, I have to take this moment to call out Ryan Sinclair!
Ryan & The Doctor were such good friends.

I'm not just saying that they were good like two people who get along. They were good for each other. Honestly, after how RTD wrote Ruby and Belinda's relationship with The Doctor, the whole Fam is that much more refreshing. They're a support network!
Wow is that why so many people hate on this era?? Are you just not entertained by people who legitimately help each other become the best versions of themselves? Lol oof pocketing that one for later... 😂
These two are truly underrated for their chemistry. They share plenty of comedic moments together and Ryan's scene with The Doctor in his last episode, The Revolution of the Daleks, is so candid. He shows so much maturity. It even becomes clearer that after he leaves, his reason for leaving is having found purpose in the time since being parted with the Tardis.
He knows he is needed by his friends. He feels important to the planet. He sees an opportunity to help in a way that flying around on the Tardis feels a bit like...running away from it all. He found purpose and he's going to run in its direction not the other 'round.
I love you, Ryan Sinclair.

Woah, whoops...how'd that picture get uploaded right here? 😳 *clearing throat; knocking things over in a rush*
This guy was an adorable ball of energy when he wasn't being Mr. Cool standing behind his Granddad taking in the whole of the universe. Just seeing sights and winning at FIFA against his mate. 😄
His most notable moments aside are definitely being the object of King James's affection, his big brother moment with Ada, when he emotionally supported a man he'd only just met give birth (so help me if y'all don't see the beauty of that moment from a science fiction and queer perspective), his conveyor belt moment in Kerblam!, his cute and dorky reaction to meeting Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, the gadget bit in Spyfall, and the time he blew up a bunch of Cybermen on a dying world stranded in time and space.

Hey, I get it if you don't have taste and wanna be like "but he wasn't that well written" or "he was such a background character for most of the show" but I think it helps to pay attention to moments when they happen on screen. I'd say erase your biases too but that's not as easy of a solution. They're not exactly visible or easily perceived. Ryan Sinclair's bright and shining face, however, is right there! Clear as can be 😉 Just look at it!

Did you look?
...lol okay I'm done being a goober.
Here's to you, Ryan Sinclair (and Tosin Cole for playing the role)!

Bonus points for his last scene with Graham in their finale. He keeps trying; he keeps fighting to conquer his dispraxia. He isn't magically gifted with the ability to overcome it as a result of having traveled with The Doctor or anything like that; he simply has to keep at it. That's a highly motivating and emotionally validating subplot and it neatly coalesces with the grief of his grandmother. He's never weighed down by it because he and Graham learned how to open themselves up in their time with the Doctor. That vulnerability and the community that strengthens us in sight of grief becomes their parting gift.
What a lovely ending for a pair of lovely boys.

Linguine - Temporary Score: 7
Description: Flattened spaghetti, "little tongues". Great name for a human being controlled by a rat.
First Take Points: 4 - i really wanted to make linguine with shellfish (clams or shrimp or maybe even lobster), but i was just so extra lazy and did not want to put to sea (or like, go to a store), so i just made a a buttery garlicky sauce and shredded some leftover chicken and it was really quite good!
Remix Bonus Points: 2 - i haven't remixed it yet. BUT, i am giving it points because i think it would go really well in a thai chicken noodle inspired sauce base, and i also think it would go really well in a stir-fry featuring oyster sauce. it holds sauce well for just being flat.
Amusement Points: 3 - i dunno, there's nothing inherently entertaining about flattened spaghetti? ok, you could cook it and then use it as wraps to create a Pasta Mummy. that's fun to think about. also i'm giving it an extra point because it really IS a great name for a chef (rat-driven or otherwise) or just a person in general, and i feel like i should give all of my friends pasta-based nicknames now! except that they'll find this ranking and think that their nickname reflects where i would rank them personally out of all humanity and that's super unfair i would never rank my friends that way, they should know better really, all humans exist on a binary to me: 1 (they are tolerable and i like - sometimes LOVE! - them) or 0 (ew, people, gross)
Annoyance Deductions: 2 - my bias against long pasta is well established at this point. minus 1, go sit long-ly in the corner. also this pasta is no good for throwing and or dropping. it has no structural superiorities (not being round and all), so it just breaks.
Alternative Uses: well, see my above note on Pasta Mummy. or, let's harken back to the literal translation of "little tongues", if you had a large, lifesized Pasta Snake, this would indeed be the perfect little tongue; we'd need to cut a groove in it to help our PastaSnake smell/taste/see better. Patsy Pasta Snake needs a backstory now. submissions are open!

Wicked is a piece of art with two best friends who are separated by their differing ideologies around the corrupt system (Elphaba is an idealist revolutionary, Glinda is a 'realist' working inside the system)
The story ends with them agreeing the Idealist Revolutionary's death will fix the plot
Code Geass is a piece of art with two best friends who are separated by their differing ideologies around the corrupt system (Lelouch is an idealist revolutionary, Suzaku is a 'realist' working inside the system)
The story ends with them agreeing the Idealist Revolutionary's death will fix the plot
Difference being that in Wicked, Glinda (the 'realist') is seen more in the right and in Code Geass, Lelouch (the 'revolutionary') is seen more in the right.
The context of the two planned deaths is very different - one is basically a cover up, to affirm the previous system while Oz still sees Elphaba as evil and the other is to subvert the system entirely
Wicked being affected by Bush era politics is well documented so the Realist being more in the right and the one who actually "gets stuff done" is a lot more reflective of that political mood. The writers thought change from inside the system was the correct way to go about things
Code Geass is a japanese story about Britain forcibly colonising and taking over Japan ... so the story ends with saying "go revolution" because obviously. The work from inside the system guy is clearly wrong (and I can't remember many times the narrative outwardly reinforces his worldview with any results)
Is this interesting
#wicked#wicked musical#meta#i guess#there's a broader point here about how simple pop art tries to contextualise revolution vs inward change in fantasy and sci fi settings#especially because attack on titan also has a very similar ending#these writers very easily come up with these corrupt systems of power#and very easily think of the revolutionary response and the ideological opposite#but the effects of those elements and the plot resolution is in “idk he dies and loses but also things kinda change from there”#with a heavy emphasis on this ending being overly neat and tidy like they're scared to show us anything after that

These 10 Democratic Senators sold out their party, their colleagues, Federal workers, their country, and their constituents, by voting to advance the Continuing Resolution that gives FOTUS and Musk greater control over our government and budget.
And to be clear: this is not a "both sides are the same" or "Do nothing Dems" or "protest vote" post- even though those are all narratives that these peoples' despicable cowardice and treachery will fuel. The VAST majority of Congressional Democrats did do the right thing and voted against this- all but one in the House, and more than three quarters of those in the Senate.
But Republicans only needed a handful to bypass a filibuster and make this obscene resolution law.
The worst are the New York Democrats, Schumer and Gillibrand. Unlike the others, they aren't in a swing state. They are long-time incumbents. Their seats are not realistically threatened, except by a primary from the Left which this makes more likely. There is no reason at all for them to do this, other than corruption or cowardice.
And Schumer is Senate Minority Leader- arguably the leading figure in the party now, along with Hakeem Jefferies in the House. He not only surrendered to the regime here, but went against the bulk of his own caucus to do it. He is blatantly unfit to be minority leader, and he should be challenged for the position immediately if he will not resign.
All ten of these turncoats should face primary challenges at their next election (if there ever is one again), but especially Schumer, Gillibrand, and Fetterman (who has been cozying up to MAGA repeatedly since the election).
On one positive personal note, I am pleased to see that both of my Senators, Bennett and Hickenlooper of Colorado, voted against this, as I called and urged them yesterday to do.
Well, if the House Democrats don't have the votes, and the Senate Democrats are too divided to do so, then it is up to the people to shut down this fascist regime, via mass boycotts and a general strike.

Rant incoming!
I hate hate hate with a passion how Advent Calendars are advertised by stores. The whole idea of them is restricting yourself, allowing yourself only one treat per day and having to wait for it, to earn it by patiently waiting and denying yourself for Christ. But ads on TV are all like: "It's about treating yourself! 😉 Every day you give yourself a little gift to appreciate yourself! 😁 It's all about you! You feeling good and comfortable! 😌"
Just, aaargh!! Yes it's good to celebrate and treat yourself sometimes and yes we as a society have such a toxic relationship with work that we have to be reminded about resting and enjoying ourselves. But Advent is NOT a time for that! It's a time for ascesis - which is an equally forgotten and an equally important skill in our society without which the whole treating yourself loses its meaning! It's a time to be less focused on your work, yes, but instead of focusing on yourself in its place, to focus on God and building your relationship with Him. How could they twist this awesome tool and reminder so awfully?!
#brought to you by#your regularly scheduled ranting about the secularization of Jesus' Birthday#guess who went shopping today#happy fricking “birthday without the birthday boy” are you proud of yourself Western world?#the first week of Advent is about hope right and we have nothing to hope for if we're comfortable#this Advent for me is about finally getting angry#when i'm done with it you're going to be calling me Daughter of Thunder#and the birth of God-Man is going to become a revolution it deserves to be#i found my Advent resolution at last#better late than even later#let's punch some heretics together (especially including ourselves whenever we don't reflect Christ's image)#St Nicholas THE REAL GOD-FEARING ST. @sideguitars, video evidence as requested! It's kind of hard to see the bits pinging out, but you can kind of tell if you look closely? And with the sound on you can hear the snap-snap-snap of them going through. Perfect for all your pasta hedgehog needs.
@iglowindark I'm sorry your macaroni was too small :( Please enjoy this vicarious macaroni shooting instead

(my new years resolution was to be more brave, and here are some things that have paid off this month:
-candlelight sleepy girl yoga (so relaxing and lovely and it feels so good to move my body and stretttch. if they did this class every night i would probably go to it)
-got my eyebrows done (i know this is silly but ive always been weird about folks putting chemicals and products too close to my eyeballs but got SO TIRED up maintaining brows and also doing them every morning, so here they are!!! And im going to bed and theyre still there and i am *so natural* so glamorous)
-i said yes to a teaching opportunity, so will officially actually be a Professor Grey too, and Im actually very excited (i never thought i would ever teach art, i always thought if i taught something it would be something serious and idk practical, but, thats not what worked out, and instead i get to spend my time once a week playing with paint and youths and clay and—)
anyway, will add to this as i hopefully continue to be brave 2k24)

Capellini - Temporary Score: 6
First Take Points: 5 - FULL. POINTS. i ate capellini in a.... let's call it a modified pasta primavera. basically, i had lots of fridge veggies that needed to get eaten, so i diced everything up, gently sauteed with the liquid from some canned diced tomatoes, and lots of spicies (primarily oregano) and folded in the pasta. it was glorious. (in case it wasn't clear, the photo is not mine)
Remix Bonus Points: 3 - for now. i am now firmly in camp capellini over spaghetti. everything that is good about spaghetti is twice as good if you use capellini instead.
Amusement Points: 1 - as much as i love to eat capellini, i'm not sure i would call it cute? cuter than spaghetti, but it's just a vv thin conductor's stick. and if you want to build with it you have to glue lots of strands together in a bundle.
Annoyance Deductions: 3 - so fragile. like the eerily long bones of a baby bird. which makes it easier to break in half so it fits in the pot, but i actually enjoy eating capellini in twirled forkfuls, so i don't need to break it?
Alternative Uses: it's too fragile to use for anything fun when it's uncooked. i guess you could do some intricate doll braids with cooked capellini. i'm gonna need some help here team.

There's only one New Year's resolution that really matters:
To do all we can to build a world where no person dies or loses their autonomy or voice because of the greed, cruelty or indifference of another.
Make that our Project 2025.

ppl who larp about the Revolution™ almost seem to expect someone *else* to take the leading role in it all so they can sit inside on their asses and do jack shit, they know they have no meaningful skills to offer and would only slow people down, but expect to *somehow* magically radicalize most americans into doing all the work for them because awww dey're just such a weak wittle babu that needs to be pwotected and defwended awlways uwu
like. come on. get a grip. if everything went your way and someone actually stronger than you came along to take the lead, you're likely not being invited, and you'll likely be left behind... which means left to the alt right, who will no doubt come to your house to see if you're perpetuating anything "woke", and you gotta know they wont just ask, they'll barge in and look through everything even your computer.
though, you should really focus on your plan. your first step: get along with people enough to even actually convince them its a good idea, and we all know you'll never dare to try that shit. you cant even be on here w/o blocking someone like me for even suggesting you are approaching this like a child playing war and you have NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
you think you want a second holocaust (which is essentially letting trump win, i mean hitler got the majority vote in germany. thats how he rose to power. didn't just materialize out of thin air), but you dont seem to grasp the gravity of what that entails, or even that you'd be thrown in the camps with everyone else, all to stick it to jewish ppl and "the libs", even if it means you and all the ones you love die along with them. you are a net negative to humanity and quite frankly should be on a fucking watch list.
#tankies#accelerationists#i dont think the power of love and friendship is gonna carry you through this one guys#you're waiting for someone to come along and save you- this revolution is nothing more than a complex fantasy of you being saved#and protected. nothing more.#i understand you're scared. i understand you've made this idea your whole life and the only thing you dream about to feel better#about living in a world where you're oppressed and constantly in pain and have no power. it makes sense. i create such fantasies for myself#sometimes. but when we come back to reality- we cant expect to take the whole fantasy with us per se#the world isnt one day going to magically go exactly your way. its just not going to happen. it'd be nice if it did- we think- but it wont#you have to be more practical in this. you can use your fantasy as a motivator. a goal. be the change you want to see etc. etc.#but YOU have to take steps making it a reality. no one is going to be the all knowing person who saves you from all the problems#and can do all the things you cant do and save the day or whatever. it's never going to happen. you have to be that person#for yourself. if you're gonna larp about a revolution you have to at the bare minimum have this understood.#after that- you need conflict resolutions skills and to know how to communicate#you'll need to learn how to get along with people you dont like at all. you'll need to learn how to communicate your ideas effectively#you'll need to learn how to argue and defend your ideas and how to have the humility to be wrong and accept it and the ability#to change your mind. you'll have to educate yourself and keep educating yourself. you'll have to learn how to actually listen to other#ppl instead of trying to find a way to manipulate them to believe what you do#and after all that social stuff is out of the way- you need to learn some mother fucking SURVIVAL SKILLS BITCH#how to FIGHT and SURVIVE in any kind of environment. how to use weapons and build fires out of nothing n shit#if you cant manage all of that? you're fucked.
