Splish, Splash - Give Your Styling Tools a Bath!
Tumblr media
NOT the electrical ones, though.
For my wet-set darlings...I'm talking about those rollers. Your bestie that gets those curls bouncy each time while you sleep or are doing errands. Notice how they aren't as kushy as they used to be? Not as voluminous as your hair, and how it might be impacting the result of the curl itself?
I'm talking about those brushes, too! Removing the hair from the brush is not enough. The oils and other particles still remain on the brush and will be transferred onto your freshly cleaned hair. It's one of the reasons if you notice your hair gets oily and there's stuff in it even after you have freshly cleaned it.
Ew, right?
Don't let that hard work go to waste, bestie! This article is all about how to get your tools back in tip-top shape and you looking and feeling your best, as you should!
So, pitter-patter, let's get at 'er!
What you'll need:
Your brushes
Your hair rollers
A bowl / tub / container
Shampoo
Warm water
A Towel
Before we toss everything into the water of wonders that will revitalize our beloved styling tools, we must prep them for the journey. Just can't toss them in all 'Bon Voyage!' , ok?
Remove any hair strands that may be ensnared and unwilling to let go of your rollers and brushes. Separation anxiety might be strong with them, but you must proceed to trudge on through. Tough love.
After that, you then will want to remove the plastic framing / latch off of them, so they are now completely free from all bearings.
I can imagine just the feeling of those two steps alone are giving the foam parts the joys one feels after removing their bra for the day. If they had feelings, that is.
Next up is prepping their bath. See, it's just like pampering yourself in a way, but it's showing the same love to your tools!
Add the warm water to your container (Think, Goldilocks... not too hot that you're scalding your hands and you can hear your tools scream in terror as they question how they've ever wronged you in their existence...and not too cold. We ain't cold hearted here, ok?)
After the water has been added, you then will put in some of the shampoo. It's like a cute little bubble bath for your tools!
Why shampoo and not something like dish detergent? Well, shampoo is designed for the hair. Nice answer, Bree.... But honestly. It's meant to be powerful enough to remove previous product (like setting/texturizing spray when you wet set your hair, for example), as well as removes the oils and dirt tussled up along the way. The ingredients often times in most shampoos are meant to clean our hair of the same things, but without the harshness other cleaning substances use.
Now you're going to drop your rollers into the abyss of bubbles. Once everyone is all settled in, you're going to want to gently squeeze and roll the rollers between your fingers. We want that absorbency at 100%! When you feel satisfied that you have gently scrubbed them enough - Sorry, TLC! - You're going to let them sit there and stew in their feelings for 10 to 15 minutes. Once again, like we do in the tub or shower.
For brushes, gently massage the bristles of to clean them. If you have a wooden handle like I do with my boar bristle brush, you're going to want to keep the wooden handle out. So maybe do those separately after draining the water to make it more shallow, or if you just want to get it all done at once, have a different container off to the side. Try to avoid soaking for a long time as to not damage the wood. Because no one wants their wood damaged.
Just like with your hair, rinse them out after!
Next up you're going to spread them out on the towel. If it's nice weather out, get out and catch some rays (with sun protection, of course) while your tools soak up the sun. If it's colder weather / rainy / etc. you can let them dry on the towel in your bathroom.
When everything is all dry and there's no moisture left in your styling tools (sometimes one has to swap out the towel if it gets too waterlogged) , your curlers are good to be reassembled with their plastic casings, and everything can go back into their storage for next use.
Notice how vibrant everything looks? Both colour and texture for the foam rollers should be more noticeable. It's like they're coming right out of the package all brand-spankin' new!
We always (well, should always) make sure our makeup brushes and blenders/sponges are clean before we use them. These are no different.
Keep calm, and roll on!
