The Housewardens' Music Taste

Summary: Having your own private dorm room at NRC means having the freedom to blast whatever you want through your speakers. But just what exactly are our dorm leaders listening to when nobody else is around?

Characters: All Housewardens Pairings: None CWs: Swearing, she/they pronouns for Idia.

A/N: I'm sorry this took *checks calendar* almost ten months for me to answer, I promise it hasn't been for lack of interest! Sometimes writing is hard and my brain is mean. Thank you for your patience! These takes are admittedly heavily biased by my own music taste and knowledge, so feel free to let me know if you think I missed any artists!

Riddle Rosehearts

You can't convince me his mom wasn't constantly playing classical music for him when he was growing up. I honestly think he still defaults to classical music, especially to improve his focus while reading or studying.

I also think Cater has definitely exposed him to a lot more modern music and, though he is undoubtedly very picky, there's even some of it he likes.

Artists that come to mind for Riddle include Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Red Velvet, and Mitski.

Leona Kingscholar

For the most part, I'd imagine Leona mostly listens to pretty chill music that's easy to nap to, like R&B or soft rock.

That's not to say he doesn't actively enjoy listening to music though. If he's in the mood to jam, I could see him turning on some hip-hop or even some angry punk music.

Artists that come to mind for Leona include Lil Nas X, Gorillaz, Gym Class Heroes, and The Weeknd.

Azul Ashengrotto

Lounge music feels like the easy answer here. Lots of smooth jazz and easy listening.

However, I also can't resist suggesting that Azul might have a secret fondness for electro-swing that he keeps secret due to the genre's reputation for being considered "cringe".

Artists that come to mind for Azul include Frank Sinatra, Kenny G, Michael Bublé, and Caravan Palace.

Kalim Al-Asim

Kalim strikes me as one of those guys that would say that he likes every genre of music, only he would actually mean every genre- rap and country included.

That being said, his preference definitely skews heavily in the direction of songs that he can dance to. Bonus points if the composition and instrumentation have a clear Scalding Sands influence.

Artists that come to mind for Kalim include Cascada, Saint Levant, Shakira, and Christina Aguilera.

Vil Schoenheit

For Vil, my brain immediately jumps to all the gayest, poppiest, cunt-serviest stuff I can think of. Imagine every song you and your friends might put on a playlist for pride with some sad girl music sprinkled in for flavor.

Being in Film Studies Club, I'd also imagine he spends a decent amount of time listening to and analyzing movie soundtracks, though whether this counts as part of his "music taste" is up for debate.

Artists that come to mind for Vil include Lady Gaga, Todrick Hall, Britney Spears, and MARINA.

Idia Shroud

This bitch's playlists are absolutely filled with Vocaloid songs, nightcore remixes, anime openings, and video game soundtracks. She is an absolute fucking nerd and I know her music taste reflects this. Let's not forget she is canonically an idol stan.

As for "normal" music, I think they probably listen to about what you'd expect- weird emo shit.

Artists that come to mind for Idia include My Chemical Romance, Utsu-P, Yasuharu Takanashi, and Will Wood.

Malleus Draconia

I genuinely don't even know where to start with Malleus. I feel like this guy listens to Gregorian chants and spooky Halloween sound effect compilations.

In all seriousness, I feel like Malleus would greatly enjoy pieces involving stringed instruments, seeing as he has a talent for playing them. The rest of his music taste probably stems from whatever Lilia and the others have exposed him to, and so is likely very strange.

theo is a straight-up stalker. he will learn anything and everything about you and use that information to weasel his way into your life. theo doesn't do casual. he is obsessive, possessive, and manipulative. the type to follow you around the castle, steal personal items, and hurt those who get in his way. he will worm his way into your heart and make you fall madly in love with him before he lets the mask slip and shows you how dangerous and unhinged he actually is, but by the time you realize it, it's way too late.

mattheo jealousy and anger issues is mattheo's downfall. this man cannot handle it when your attention isn't on him 24/7. he constantly gets into fights if anyone even dares to look in your direction because in his mind, you're his and his alone, which should be concerning but damn you'd be lying if you said an angry, jealous mattheo wasn't an absolute turn on.

enzo i've talked about this at length, but sweet angel face enzo is 100% a master manipulator. enzo is all about the long game and he doesn't care what he has to do to come out on top. he will gaslight, gatekeep, and girlboss his way into a relationship with you and once he has you, you'll never be allowed to leave.

blaise is notorious at ghosting. given his mommy issues, this man is terrified of commitment and will avoid it at all cost. even if you feel like things are going extremely well, this man will go ghost like danny phantom. it'll take a lot of confrontation and arguments, but once he does decide to commit his loyalty knows no bounds.

draco isolation is draco's go to. like his namesake, draco has a tendency to hoard. your time, your affection, your attention — draco needs it all. his whole world revolves around you and he expects the same out of you as well. he absolutely hates sharing and he will go to great lengths to keep you all to himself.

regulus being a black means regulus is notoriously emotionally unavailable. not only does he have mommy and daddy issues, he has brother issues as well. his fear of abandonment pushes him to self-sabotage his own relationships. the smartest thing to do would be to walk away, but reg pulls you in by showing you a soft, vulnerable side of himself that he would never show to anyone else.

tom babe, tom riddle invented red flags. I wouldn't even know where to start. he's controlling, he's manipulative, and he's quite literally insane. but once he sets his sights on you, you don't stand a chance. tom will stop at nothing to have you. he wants to own you, to possess you, to corrupt and ruin you in every possible way and tom will have you absolutely begging for it.

I went full little prince theme with Riddle here this time and removed the other stuff I referenced back then. I wanted his clothes to look like they're eating him up a bit to show that his responsibilities are a little too much for him. And I made him thinner...except for his cheeks which I need to keep chubby or else.

And Che'nya is a punk! (Albeit I'm not 100% on his color palette...it's good for now!) I don't know too much about this guy sadly, other than he's Riddle's childhood friend along with Trey and that he's a little quirky...

Mattheo Riddle had always been hypnotic chaos. The kind of beautiful that felt like a warning—untamed, volatile, and draped in sin. The son of the Dark Lord, born into infamy and raised in shadow, he carried his father’s legacy not like a crown, but like a curse. Everyone knew his name before he ever opened his mouth. That last name whispered like a hex in the corridors, carved into the bones of Hogwarts itself. But still, they watched him.

He partied like he didn’t expect to see tomorrow. Always late to class, always smelling faintly of smoke and something forbidden. And the girls? Girls were just another vice. He slept around with a reputation carved in stone—not many made it past a night, and none made it past three weeks.He got bored, or cruel, or vanished. Sometimes all three. He didn’t break hearts gently. He shattered them and walked away without looking back.

He laughed too loud, fought too hard, and kissed like it was a war he planned to win. He didn’t need to chase—he let them come to him, drawn to the dark, magnetic pull of something so deeply broken it looked like freedom. They wanted to be the one to fix him. They never were.

Softened, in ways no one thought he could. People whispered that maybe this was different. That maybe someone had finally cracked through. You started to believe it too.

Until that night.

The corridor was dim, and the voices echoed around the corner before you even realized who they belonged to. You were on your way back from the Astronomy Tower when you heard them. You stopped walking. Pressed yourself into the shadows. Listened.

“I still can’t believe you actually went through with it. You made it look effortless.” Theo said, smirking.

Mattheo’s voice followed, lazy and amused. “Ten galleons is ten galleons, it wasn’t even hard. She’s just another girl, Theo, a few dates, some soft touches, telling her she’s not like the others. They always eat that shit up. I barely had to try. Just said what she wanted to hear. That’s all it ever takes.”

They laughed.

So from what I know, the three big works you are working on right now are Rook's, Carter's and Riddle's Dreaming of you correct?? Between those three, which has been the easiest to write angst for? Who has given you the easiest inspiration for writing?

I love you. Thank you for sending your ask. It makes my life so much easier in terms of posting. Plus, I love discussing the behind-the-scenes process of my writing. I plan to have a big ask "event" after posting Riddle's Dreaming of You. I expect there will be a lot more questions about how I wrote and characterized him. Regardless, you're amazing for asking me beforehand. Let's get into the real answer!

I haven't been working too much on Cater's Dreaming of You at the moment, so I can only predict my future responses to it. Riddle's Dreaming of You has been taking up most of my time, but Rook x Observant Reader is 45k words, so I have a majority of it.

Unexpectedly (or perhaps expectedly, since I like to be way too thorough, thoughtful, and detailed with my responses. For my own sanity, I'll try to be concise. Edit: it didn’t work), this is a difficult but interesting question.

The reason is that each fanfic has a different "type" of angst.

Riddle's is 100% hurt/comfort. There are many panic attacks, but each one is immediately followed by a comfort section. These were the easiest to write because the comfort isn’t delayed.

Rook x Observant Reader has a combo of what I'd consider "slow angst," plus one instant of "sharp angst." The latter was easy because it was resolved quickly. The drawn-out “angst” was the big hurdle. There are multiple moments where Rook doesn't act out of uncertainty and fear. My first instinct was always to comfort him immediately. However, I quickly learned that it threw the pacing way off for multiple reasons. For one, I had to delay them getting together until later, but the more important one was that it would take Rook more time to open up. Reader could say all the right things, but ultimately, Rook wouldn't believe them. This method would only agitate him further because he'd probably feel like they were prying. That's the last thing Reader wants to do, so I had to adjust and let him process it slowly, and on his own. Ironically, I treat him like a deer. You have to be calm and non-threatening to get them to come closer. You can't make sudden movements, or else you'll spook them.

(Side Note/Fun Fact: In this fanfic, Rook becomes very still when it's just Reader and him having a borderline vulnerable moment. Instead of having him be flamboyant and deflecting, I decided to play into his internal conflict of wanting to be seen and understood, and his desire to stay safely hidden. When this happens, he becomes very still and quiet to fully focus on Reader and their actions. He looks for any signs that they're a threat because they unintentionally exposed him once. Therefore, he has a reason to treat them as such. He's never one to underestimate an enemy, so he treats them with caution. Yet, he knows this person understands him, and it's natural to seek companionship.)

I haven't written or fleshed out much of Cater's Dreaming of You. However, I suspect this will be the hardest by a mile. I'm almost positive. This is still in the planning process, so it's subject to change. However, based on the intention of this series (which is to peel back the layers to see who the character is and elaborate and showcase their insecurities) and Cater's character, there will undoubtedly be a lot of angst.

From what I've gathered, Cater doesn't believe someone can love him for who he actually is. When he was younger, his sisters and mother trampled all over his feelings, desires, and autonomy. They guilt-tripped him into eating their sweets when he didn't want to. It was severe that he eventually began hating sweet things. It may not seem like much, but that's just the surface. They treated him like a butler when they went shopping. His sister got him stuff that they wanted for his birthday. They didn't bother asking what he wanted. Through their actions, he was told that his thoughts and feelings didn't matter and weren't valued.

The women of his house also probably judged him for not being cute enough (I'm sure there's evidence for this, but again: late and tired), which is why he developed the persona he did. He became the ditzy magicam influencer. The facade is a survival mechanism to evade getting emotionally hurt by most of his family. He had to suppress his desires to accommodate them.

Considering Cater's unique magic, they must've demanded so much from him, ordering him around to do everything. Unique Magic is a form of ancient magic. UMs are created by a deep and absolute desire for something. It could be the individual, like in ADeuce, Epel, and Azul. It could also be from intense outside desires, like Idia (the expectation and need for someone in the family to be able to control the Underworld) or Leona (people believed in the story that the second son was cursed, resulting in King's Roar). For regular people, the former seems more common. Therefore, Cater had so many things to do that he wished he had multiple versions of himself.

I'll have to play around with it and see.

(Quick Side Note/Fun Fact: While Rook and Cater are both secretive, it's in different ways. Rook has more physical stealth and attributes than Cater, who's more adept at covering his tracks socially. However, they both give out the same amount of personal information, which is essentially little to none. Out of the two, Cater is actually far superior in terms of hiding information. Sometimes, Rook doesn't bother to hide that he's not telling someone everything. He just gives the dangerous, narrow-eyed smile, and people back off. On the other hand, I think Cater is so good at concealing his depression, feelings, and desires that he's got most of the fandom fooled. Many people overlook the orange-haired junior and chalk him up to a one-note character. That's exactly what he wants. He doesn't look suspicious. Instead, he plays into a stereotype to go under the radar when he needs to.

(Therefore, trying to get close to Cater in a way that he doesn't get overwhelmed too much and completely spiral is going to be insanely hard. With Rook, he's willing to get close to other people, even if it's something different and potentially a little risky. He's more open to it than Cater. Plus, Rook doesn't hate himself or think that he doesn't deserve good things. Cater? I feel like he hates himself, which is part of why he keeps the facade up all the time. I'm struggling to figure out how to help the Heartslabyul junior love himself. To have a healthy relationship, he needs to love himself first.)

I know this is almost exactly what you said in your response to my ask about him, and I honestly 1000% agree with your reasoning. I will also admit the way I view him is heavily influenced by my own experiences with gender and sexuality (minus the demisexual part). During the timeline of the game, I see Riddle as pre-everything, likely due to discouragement or fearmongering by his mother. Even after moving out of his mother's house, I honestly don't really see him transitioning medically; however, I think that would be a conclusion he would come to on his own after extensive research rather than due to his mother's influence. I also think he would use neopronouns if he didn't feel like he would be breaking some unspoken rule by doing so. I don't really feel the need to explain why I think he's gay to be honest, but as for his demisexuality, I will introduce my Treyrid agenda. I feel like the connection Riddle forms with Trey in their childhood ultimately blossoms into romantic and sexual feelings after reuniting at Night Raven. Since this would likely be his only experience with such feelings up to that point, I can see it greatly influencing the way he views his own attraction from that point forward.

I'll admit, I don't really have a ton of specific thoughts about Ace. Most of this headcanon comes purely from vibes. Ace feels like a fuckboy to me. He feels like the type of guy that would hook up with dudes and then make some excuse as to why it isn't gay because "we kept our socks on, guys!" and "what's a little dick-sucking between bros?". He'd probably treat sex pretty casually and thus not really understand why people think that because he fucks dudes he has to be gay. I think as he gets older and works past some of his internalized homophobia though, he'd probably end up coming to terms with his attraction towards guys and identifying as bisexual. As for the aromantic part, I feel like I need only direct you to his Suitor Suit vignette. This is one of many lines that sparked this half of my headcanon.

This headcanon honestly rubbed off on me from my boyfriend. He's a bi trans guy who projects heavily on Deuce, so I basically absorbed his thoughts and ideas through osmosis. I honestly kinda just want to direct you to this post of his because his Deuce takes are so perfect I have nothing to add to them. I love you sukeban girl gang delinquent Deuce. I love you Deuce who is attracted to anyone who could beat him up. Unlike Riddle, I think Deuce is on T by the time he's enrolled at Night Raven. This is partially because I think his mom would be way more supportive than Riddle's would be.

Back at it again with my Treyrid agenda! I really enjoy seeing and writing relationships between cisgender gay guys and transgender gay guys, since I personally feel that there's a strong sense of gender euphoria to be found in that situation: for someone who likes men to see you fully as a man and be attracted to you as a man. All that's to say that my headcanon for Riddle has heavily influenced the way I view Trey as well, since their relationship is one I'm extremely attached to. I don't really have any specific support or evidence for this one. Like with Ace, it's sorta just the vibes I get from him. Trey is like the epitome of that "I'm not gay enough for the gays" Reddit post to me.

I'm so sorry that like 3/5 of these headcanons have just been me going "it's about the vibes" instead of properly explaining them. Sometimes for me it truly is just about the vibes, and Cater gives me the vibes of someone who doesn't fuck with either side of the gender binary. I do think they still present as mostly masc and tend to avoid more traditionally feminine clothes and accessories due to trauma involving their older sisters, but I also don't really think they fully click with the idea of manhood either. They're literally just hanging out. Also, I may not be fully informed on this given that I only play on the EN server, but isn't bisexual Cater basically confirmed in the JP version? I've seen a lot of posts supporting it, so like... is it even a headcanon at this point?

I totally agree with you there. He had a lack of love and genuine feelings in his life while growing up, so he would be clingy and obsessed with someone who's in a relationship with him. And, of course, the important thing here is the fact that his father constantly told him that he needed to be better, stronger, that he was not doing enough right now. It definitely played a role in his self-esteem. Yes, Mattheo is a cocky jerk. But I believe that deep down he has a lot of insecurities. He thinks that he need to earn love and praise, to deserve it.

Before you two even started dating, he would scare off every guy who breathed in your direction. You were his before you even knew it, and he’d scared off anyone who tried to steal you away from him.

But I also think that he would be very, like VERY cautious about it at first. Like, babe, it's all new to him. He doesn't even know what to be in a healthy, loving, and caring relationship means. So if someone is showing a genuine interest in him first, he would be like, 'Why do they keep coming to me? They want something from me or what?'

In my head, he would be scared to death to show his vulnerability and emotions. But once he's in, Merlin saves you, he would be a lovesick fool for you.

Also, I believe that possessiveness can be a healthy thing. His very high pda level - a desire to protect you as his partner, both emotionally and physically. Not from a place of jealousy (but from it too, in his case) but from genuine care. He wants you to feel safe and loved around him 24/7. And it comes with constant praise during your intimacy. He would just shower you with it — 'You look so beautiful underneath me, babe', 'Yes, pretty thing, keep moaning my name just like that'.

It's kinda related to exclusive commitment and feeling of belonging too. Possessiveness there can show up as a natural desire for exclusivity — he wants to be your person, and you want to be his. And maybe he likes to show it off to everyone, to let them know that you're off-limits, and he's a lucky bastard who has you. He would feel proud to have you as a partner in his life and naturally want to keep your bond strong and acknowledged by the others. Cocky and cheeky 🤭

To sum up, I think his possessiveness is out of question. It's just vary from "Why sit in a chair when you have my lap, babe?" with absolutely puppy eyes to "Know your place, darling. It's right there, on my lap." with a low and possessive murmur — depends on the version of Mattheo and the author's view.

Yeah I'm taking care of myself, life as usual being messy but we must keep moving forward with lil baby steps at a time. Some art or even doodling helps a bit to settle nerves.

I reaaally like Idia's ENORMOUS FLUFFY HAIR and his bulky hoodie, also his face lololol he looks a lot like the og Disney Hades, wanna see him open a big smile and show all of those teeth

ALSO MALLEUS, MALLEUS IS SO. UGHHHHH i can feel the WHIMSY radiating off of him, just look at those eyes, they're soooo sweet and kind but also. OMINOUS. He really looks like something out of an old dark fantasy movie I wanna take a bite off of him

As for Riddle.....I cannot draw him properly without designing his mom first. Because she raised him to be just like her (funnily enough, the way I pictured her is scarily similar to how she looks like in the comics- except that in my head she was a bit thicker like the actual Queen of hearts from the animated movie...I also hc Riddle's dad to be small, and that's where he inherited his height from 😭) (Ignore how stiff Riddle's pose is...actually don't it's in his character to look like he got a stick up there)

For his face, I wanted his cheeks to be really soft and rosy...I need Riddle's face to look cute (it's Floyd's fault 😭, he put the cute petite red goldfishie in my head) However, I wanted his eyes to be striking. Deep enough to make you fess up your mistake with just one disapproving look (skill acquired from mama Rosehearts)

As for his clothing, I took inspiration from two things: those young prince designs with the pantaloons and a boy scout.

I wanted his clothes to look like they're eating him up. Like they're a little too big for him but he makes it ✨work ✨ because I wanted to show that responsibility and expectations are overwhelming him without making it too obvious. I also need to mention that his face is painted white, because insert deep meaningful "mask your mistakes" symbolism here.

The royal prince look is there because...well judging by how ridiculous the Queen's rules are, the clothes she likes are probably just as ridiculous (plus I think that they're really cute and cute Riddle is a necessity)

The Boy Scout is there because well, boy scouts work towards a certain goal. Then they get rewarded with an insignia (feels good in the moment but those little trinkets are kind of useless and for looks only....tho it's nice to bedazzle bags with em..not like Riddle would be allowed to do that LMAO) and then they work towards another goal

This constant work-"reward"-work thing is common in Riddle's household. And you bet he's a completionist and wants all the insignia no matter how much they end up weighing on him in the end

I also removed the crowns from his design because he has too many symbols (roses, all card symbols and a crown... Very hard to balance) You can headcannon the little triangle design on his hat as a crown tho if you feel like it :)
