Time, Chess, and the Tower of Magic
(novel: 29-35)
(manhwa: 44-45)
I just reread the scene in the novel, and I'm kind of obsessed with it, but also am in awe of how well it established the dynamic between Desir and Zod, something that I feel like the manhwa didn't really do, so, I'm doing a bit of comparing under the cut.
Also, if you like these characters in the manhwa, then you should 100% read at least these few chapters, because, as I said before, they are amazing.
So the manhwa starts us off with how Zod is an "odd fellow", he's always been that, and how he lead civilization into a new era of magic, he's achievements are endless, and is Desir's irreplaceable friend.
Now, in the novel, Desir says that Zod accepted his request because he was intrigued by it. (True) He says that Zod single-handedly renewed interest in magic.
(Also, fun-fact: someone wrote a book about all of his accomplishments, and it's thicker than most encyclopedias.)
(Also also, in the manhwa he looks like 40, in the novel that's 30)
The next scene plays out almost the same, except that we learn, in the novel, that Zod has an 'archaic feeling to his words'.
While in the manhwa he's all nice, and smiley etc. novel!Desir points out that until the North Sea's rules are mentioned, Zod's so impatient to get on with the match that it can almost be heard in his tone, which for this old man is VERY impatient.
And then of course Desir drops the bomb, that yeah, he wants to play the Rule set that originates from Zod's homeland and n!Desir immediately points out how much more relaxed Zod gets from hearing that.
Tumblr media
The chess match starts, and in both mediums Zod's like, this kid is pretty good, but he's still just a kid, and "[He's] too hasty with [his] moves"
Desir, when he's on the verge of losing, makes the bet. It goes in the novel as it goes in the manhwa, except that a) Zod's like, 'I know that everything you did so far was to make this wager, and I hope you see how suspicious you are.' and b) At this Desir's just like, 'Wow, you're very interested, huh? Then I won't tell you until I win.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the whole 'you play like a whole different person' thing happens in the manhwa, 'oh, well, I played against him in the future so of course I know how he plays', 'I've been the same person this entire time' etc. etc.
So. That does not happen in the novel.
What happens instead is we get the explanation as to why is Desir losing:
He's been playing with Zod for 6 years, yes,
However, this Zod plays differently than other Zod
In the future, his play style is more aggressive
Now he focuses on counter-play and he's more reserved
And Desir deduced this in the first few steps in their game, and been sacrificing pieces since then to analyze Zod's play style.
And also, yes, Desir did figure the greatest mage of all time out in what? 20 minutes?
And Desir might be losing, but because of the time limit Zod's going to make some stupid moves, which Desir deducted will happen, then he makes even worse moves, and the next thing Zod knows is that he got ripped to shreds in 3 minutes.
In the novel, Desir mentions that in the last minutes of the match, Zod's straight up panicking over how bad the situation has gotten for him.
Then, when Desir mentions the trade, Zod tries to calmly explain to him why that's not possible "You're asking to exchange a bar of gold for a peanut"
Desir of course doesn't budge and after a bit of "bartering" it's clear just how fed up with this "boy"'s bs Zod is and reading this scene after the manhwa is kind of shocking
Zod expressed disdain at the boy's choice. "I expected you to choose more wisely. You've rejected my offer, and I can't accept your deal. With that, the negotiations are over." The man rose to get up from his seat.
(...)
"So you think this is a fair deal." The Tower Master was audibly upset by Desir's words.
And I'm very sad that this scene in this form didn't make it to the manhwa, because while we see Zod being dismissive and uninterested in Desir's idea before he sees it to himself, we don't see him being, well, like this.
Prideful, kind of cocky, and straight up offended that a mere student would even dare to suggest that his idea worth as much as support from the Tower of Magic, upset to the point that Desir has to actively put out 'fires' during the conversation so that it can progress.
Which is a beautiful way of showing us how, yes, Desir does know this guy, he knows why he's upset he knows what to say to get him to calm down enough to listen and also how to say it.
What in the manhwa is essentially just 'Well if I show you that my idea is worth it then it will be fine, right? Let me show you then.' in the novel is Desir going on first about how of course what he's saying is outrageous, and Zod is right to be upset, but shouldn't Zod know that impossible things are sometimes real? And then he starts explaining how 20 years old Zod Exarion becoming the Tower Master was an impossible feat, or maybe, perhaps, even more impossible, a student defeating him in chess! Which happened just now, and That is when Zod tells him to show him his idea.
This scene alone reaffirms to the reader, that Desir doesn't just know Zod as a tactician, but as a person, he knows how to talk to him, he knows how to talk sense into him, and that Desir did this enough in the past that this comes like second nature to him.
Zod being stone headed and stuck to his ways until Desir reminds him that he's been just like this boy in the past is also one of the most Old Person Thing TM Zod does in the entire novel, showing and not just telling us that the G is not just for show in that GILF he is actually old.
After that the "reveal" scene plays out pretty similarly except that Zod gets a bit more info out of Desir, one of them is that he didn't necessarily discover the technic but he "knows of it", and Desir lets the reader know that the person who discovered it was in fact Zod, just 3 years into the labyrinth, and as he starts explaining the theory Zod catches up extremely quickly, actually taking over Desir's explanation of how resonance is better than the enchant method.
When Desir mentions that he has more ideas like this, Zod tells his secretary to cancel every plan he has until he says otherwise, which is a very entertaining turn of events in my opinion.
So to wrap it up, while I love how the manhwa did this scene, (this is probably my favorite two chapters from it) I'm kind of sad that most of the little tidbits of building up the relationship between Zod and Desir, that would be important later got lost in adaptation.

I think you're a great TTRPG blog that attempts to shed light on many different systems. That happens especially through the discussions on your blog and it always leads to a great variety of games being discussed. Also, I bought the RMSS because of you! However, I do think that in a weird way you are a DnD blog because people keep wanting to talk to you about it and no one can escape its cultural monopoly.
So, sorry, but you gotta start an actualplay and sell your own 5e supplement now.
I'm gonna make a Rolemaster supplement and tell people it's 5e compatible because 5e can do anything
(also I feel this is a very good summary)

Why a Channel Manager is Essential for Hotels and Restaurants?
Tumblr media
In today’s digital age, the hospitality industry relies heavily on online bookings to drive revenue. With the growing number of online travel agencies (OTAs), metasearch engines, and direct booking platforms, managing room availability and rates manually can be a daunting task for hoteliers and restaurateurs. A Channel Manager simplifies this process, ensuring seamless integration across multiple booking channels, ultimately boosting revenue and reducing operational inefficiencies. Here’s why a Channel Manager is essential for hotels and restaurants:
1. Maximize Online Exposure
Hotels and restaurants benefit greatly from increased visibility on multiple online travel agencies and booking platforms. A Channel Manager connects your property to hundreds of booking channels simultaneously, expanding your reach to global and regional audiences. This allows potential guests to discover and book your services with ease.
2. Reduce the Risk of Overbooking
Manually updating availability across multiple platforms increases the risk of double bookings, leading to dissatisfied customers and potential revenue loss. A Channel Manager updates room inventory and rates in real time, ensuring accurate availability across all channels and minimizing booking errors.
3. Increase Revenue Opportunities
With all rooms and services listed online at the same time, hoteliers can take full advantage of increased occupancy rates. Dynamic pricing strategies can also be implemented within the Channel Manager, allowing hotels and restaurants to adjust prices based on demand, seasonality, and market trends.
4. Save Time and Reduce Admin Costs
Managing multiple booking platforms manually is time-consuming and prone to errors. A Channel Manager automates this process, significantly reducing administrative workload and operational costs. This allows hotel and restaurant staff to focus on providing exceptional guest experiences rather than managing reservations manually.
5. Data-Driven Insights for Better Decision-Making
A good Channel Manager provides analytics and reporting features that help businesses understand booking trends, customer preferences, and high-performing sales channels. With this data, hotels and restaurants can optimize their marketing strategies and maximize revenue potential.
6. Seamless Integration with PMS, CMS, and RMS
A Channel Manager integrates with Property Management Systems (PMS), Central Reservation Systems (CRS), and Revenue Management Systems (RMS), ensuring a smooth flow of data across all hotel and restaurant operations. This level of automation enhances efficiency and accuracy in managing reservations and pricing strategies.

Rolemaster journal
So I bought Rolemaster recently! By which I mean the RMSS. It's a hefty system and a big book. And because this might be fun and I think I'll need all the help I can get, here are some of my first impressions as I fight my way through this book.
Because context is valuable, I am young adult who's been interested in TTRPGs and wargames since her tweens. I'm familiar with DnD 5e, Lancer, ACE Agents and 10 Candles, though I played less than 10 games total (most as GM, most in DnD 5e). I've also looked a little into Shadowrun 1e and MERP.
So. These are my thoughts so far. I've finished Parts I - III, so I read everything up to performing actions.
A couple pages in and the book announces itself to only be a third of the necessary rules. Which isn't great. But I do appreciate the first five pages being dedicated primarily to explaining the product line and being very clear on which material you need, which material is optional, and which material is still compatible but not necessary for the new edition.
Which one of you was gonna tell me RM is MERP? My dad used to play that all the time.
What the fuck are these dice rolling conventions.
Oh my God these tables.
The stats are cool! And honestly way more useful than the conventions I'm familiar with, for roleplaying purposes. (What the fuck is "wisdom"? What the fuck is "charisma"?). Shoutout to "empathy" as a stat.
I feel like the game throws a lot of things at me without explaining them properly. I think I understand the difference between skill rank and skill category, but I don't understand how they are used differently. Because I don't fully understand how the game is played yet.
Stat gain is really cool! Kind of wacky, but really cool! Characters don't just improve in a linear fashion and their adventures can take a toll on them. I like it a lot.
The amount of personality traits, motivations and particularly alignment traits are downright radical in comparison to what else I know.
I appreciate the character building that takes place through the different stages of character creation (adolescence, apprenticeship, training) and the time that is included in learning these things. It's more restrictive than other systems, but it encourages genuine engagement with character creation and adds a refreshing lack of control to a character's past. However. What the hell is going on? Varak takes Composite Bow skill (4) but only gains 1 rank in it? Why does he spend 3 DP on it? I think I get the broadstrokes of the systems, but the specifics of the tables (and I assume race/class costs/bonuses/etc.) leave me confused.
"this depends upon the amount of effort that the Gamemaster is able and willing to put into it."
At least the currency system makes sense.

How to Choose a Revenue Management System for Hotels?
Tumblr media
In the case of low-profit margins, the selection of the appropriate RMS is critical for business success. A good RMS assists hotels in changing the price instantly, forecasting the occupancy levels correctly, and improving the guests’ experience. This blog will outline the key components of RMS by MMR Hotels, why they are relevant in the current business climate, and how they can transform conventional hospitality operations. At the end of this article, you will be in a position to make the right decision when it comes to choosing the right revenue management system.
Why Revenue Management Systems Are Essential for Hotels?
Revenue management systems enable hotels to make pricing decisions automatically through data analysis of trends, market, and occupancy rates. This analytical approach increases the revenue capabilities and allows hotels to make the right decisions regarding room rates and promotions. An RMS means that hoteliers do not make decisions based on guesswork but use data to manage guests’ expectations and business revenues. This not only increases the number of occupied rooms but also increases revenue in all the working sales points.
Key Features to Look For in a Hotel Revenue Management System
Certain features must be carefully considered when selecting the best RMS. Here are answers to how to choose a revenue management system.
Automating Dynamic Pricing: An RMS with real-time pricing features adjusts prices in response to competitor analysis, seasonality, and market demand. This function is key to maintaining competitive rates and maximizing revenue without manual adjustments.
Demand Forecasting and Analysis: Predictive tools in an RMS can analyze historical data and predict future occupancy trends, helping to optimize inventory management. This also aids in long-term planning by enabling data-backed forecasts for high and low seasons.
Channel Management Integration: A stable RMS should seamlessly integrate with online travel agencies (OTAs) and direct booking channels, ensuring that room availability and rates are synchronized across all platforms. This minimizes overbooking risks and improves guest satisfaction.
Personalized Marketing Insights: Some advanced RMSs can generate insights about guest preferences, making it easier to create tailored promotions or upsell opportunities. This personalized approach enhances guest loyalty and optimizes the overall guest experience.
User-Friendly Interface: Hotel staff may not have a tech background, so it’s essential to choose a system that is intuitive and easy to use. A well-designed interface reduces training time and enhances staff productivity.
Security and Compliance: With sensitive guest data involved, data security is paramount. Ensure that the RMS complies with industry standards to protect guest privacy and your hotel's reputation.
When asking, "How to choose a revenue management system for a hotel?" These features ought to be at the top of the list of priorities.
How RMS Transforms the Traditional Hotel Environment?
In the traditional hotel management model, pricing decisions and occupancy predictions often relied on manual tracking and subjective judgment. However, with RMS, hotels can switch to a streamlined, tech-enabled approach that brings significant benefits:
Enhanced Efficiency: Automated tools reduce the need for manual work, allowing staff to focus more on customer service than rate adjustments or availability tracking.
Improved Profit Margins: By maximizing the room rate potential during peak periods and maintaining occupancy during off-seasons, an RMS ensures that hotels maintain steady income streams year-round.
Informed Decision-Making: An RMS provides real-time insights and forecasts, empowering management to make timely decisions that adapt to changing market trends, leading to smarter, more strategic planning.
Enhanced Guest Satisfaction: With accurate occupancy forecasting, hotels can offer promotions, packages, or room upgrades, enhancing the guest experience while managing occupancy effectively.
Why MMR Hotels is the Solution for Your Hotel Management Needs?
MMR Hotels offers a complete revenue management solution that is tailored to the needs of the hospitality industry. MMR Hotels’ RMS provides hotels with powerful pricing, distribution, and forecasting capabilities that help to improve revenue strategy, guest satisfaction, and operational efficiency. MMR Hotels’ system is compatible with other property management systems and other channels to provide a comprehensive solution for managing all aspects of a hotel.
For hoteliers who wish to upgrade from being a traditional revenue management company to a more technological hotel revenue management, MMR Hotels provides features such as dynamic pricing, demand forecasting, channel management, and many others. They are a reliable hotel management solution due to their focus on security, ease of use, and the ability to provide valuable information.
Choosing the Right Revenue Management System
It is crucial to comprehend how to select a revenue management system for hotels that want to succeed in the current environment. Look for features that support dynamic pricing, demand forecasting, and easy integration with booking channels. Most importantly, an RMS should be secure, user-friendly, and capable of providing actionable insights. MMR Hotels’ system checks all these boxes, offering a solution that optimizes revenue while enhancing guest satisfaction.
Bringing in an RMS is an investment in the hotel’s long-term success, managing efficiency and profitability while guaranteeing a smooth guest experience.

The Importance of a Recruitment Management System for Your Business
The recruitment process can quickly become complicated, especially for larger organizations, making it seem impossible to assess every candidate adequately. Even with a small talent pool, keeping the hiring process organized and accurate is crucial for success. A recruitment management system (RMS) can help by upgrading spreadsheets and email chains, saving money by avoiding mis-hires, reducing manual tasks, and allowing employees to focus on more important work. This blog will explain recruitment software, how it functions, its benefits, and tips for selecting the appropriate one for your business.
Recruitment Management System: Meaning
A recruitment management system (RMS) is a software tool that helps recruiters organize the hiring and onboarding process to fill open roles with quality talent. Like applicant tracking systems (ATS), which post job openings, track candidates, and streamline employment offers, an RMS goes further by engaging candidates, managing candidate relationships, and automating routine tasks.
Functioning of a Recruitment Management System
Source candidates
Candidate sourcing finds potential candidates for a role. Candidate tracking software helps recruiters by using search functions to locate candidates based on skills, experience, location, and education. While recruiting involves assessing and hiring, candidate sourcing focuses on finding and engaging high-potential talent. RMSs assist by automatically posting to job sites, seeking referrals from current employees, and generating reports to identify where to find potential candidates.
Create and manage job postings
These online recruitment platforms offer templates or customizable options to list relevant job details, such as the job title, skill requirements, responsibilities, qualifications, and pre-employment testing requirements. Since recruiters create each job posting on the same platform, they can quickly and easily update listings and invite potential candidates to apply.
Store and manage candidate's resumes
A recruitment management system can store and centralize all candidates' resumes for easy retrieval. Some RMSs include tools that allow you to upload, analyze, and search resumes quickly, use secure cloud-based storage, create your resume format, and invite candidates to fill out resumes on the system.
Screen candidates with talent assessments
Some systems can integrate with skills-testing platforms, allowing applicants to complete talent assessments as part of the recruitment process. These assessments evaluate hard and soft skills, abilities, personality types, situational judgment, and cognitive abilities. For example, TestGorilla is a skills-testing platform that integrates with RMS platforms like Greenhouse. Candidates using Greenhouse can access and complete their talent assessments via TestGorilla's software.
Track candidates
Many candidate tracking systems allow recruiters to monitor each candidate's progress by tracking their place in the recruitment pipeline, updating application statuses, creating and managing interview schedules, documenting feedback from candidates and recruiters, and communicating with other hiring team members about candidates' statuses.
Automate routine tasks
An essential function of recruiting software is task automation. Recruitment management software automates tasks such as personalizing candidate outreach, sharing job descriptions on job boards, arranging interview schedules, posting job ads on social media, and sending onboarding information to candidates. Many RMSs also automate messages to previous applicants in case they are suitable for future openings.
Benefits of Recruitment Software in India
Increases hiring efficiency
In large organizations, valuable candidate data can easily be lost. Recruitment management systems boost hiring efficiency by streamlining the process with cloud-based software, data analytics, and customer management tools. They help keep track of resumes and assessment results, offer standard templates, automate tasks, integrate with calendar software, and simplify candidate communication. This allows recruiters to focus on identifying, evaluating, and hiring high-quality candidates.
Decreases recruitment costs
Recruitment software in India streamlines the hiring process by automating repetitive tasks like sorting resumes and scheduling interviews, saving time and reducing the need for additional staff. Additionally, it improves candidate matching, reducing turnover and associated costs. Centralizing data and using analytics helps companies make more informed hiring decisions, further cutting down on expenses related to bad hires and prolonged vacancies.
Financial costs
By automating many parts of the hiring process, recruitment software in India reduces the need for extensive human intervention, thus lowering labor costs. It also speeds up the recruitment cycle, which means vacancies are filled more quickly, reducing the costs associated with unfilled positions. Additionally, better candidate matching lowers turnover rates, saving rehiring and retraining costs. Overall, recruitment software offers a more efficient and cost-effective hiring process.
Helps make better hiring decisions
Recruitment management software provides data-driven insights and streamlines the process. It automates initial screenings, ensuring only qualified candidates advance, and centralizes all candidate information for easy comparison. The software also facilitates team collaboration, incorporates predictive analytics for forecasting performance, and ensures compliance with hiring regulations. These features collectively lead to more informed, efficient, and effective hiring decisions.
A recruitment management system is essential for modern businesses aiming to stay competitive and efficient. Recruitment is transformed into a strategic advantage by streamlining the hiring process, reducing costs, and providing valuable data insights. This system enhances candidate experience, supports better decision-making, and ensures compliance, which paves the way for a more skilled and satisfied workforce. Embracing a recruitment management system is not just about keeping up with technology—it's about leveraging it to build a more substantial, agile business.

The Relevance of AI-Based RMS for Hotels
Tumblr media
Hoteliers deploy AI-based revenue management systems (RMS) to pursue various objectives, such as expediting operations, boosting revenue, and making predictions. AI-based RMSs consist of complex algorithms that learn from existing data. After inputting enough data, the system trains itself and can make better decisions.
A price-optimizing system helps professionals understand how AI-based RMS work. For example, the structural model consists of past guest arrival days and length of stays. Then, algorithms sort the data according to guest types to determine behaviors that are generic to each guest category. From the analysis, the algorithm may determine the types of guests best suited for vacant rooms from a revenue perspective and adjust the room price for each guest category. The algorithm may also help reserve rooms for specific guest categories.
The benefit of AI-based RMS is its impressive analysis of data. Compared to human capacity, these systems can make projections and drive decisions more efficiently.

Review management systems (RMSs) are tools designed to track, respond to and showcase positive reviews online and through social media channels so your customers can keep abreast of them about your products and services. Review management systems also employ rich snippets to increase organic search engine visibility - an advantage when considering that most consumers read reviews before making purchases.

Why I hate the anime chess scene (aka. I still refuse to let it go a year later)
I wrote about how this scene establishes Zod's character and also his and Desir's dynamic pretty much perfectly, but how did the anime 'ruin' it? I mean, a scene can be bad for a large number of reasons, but "ruin" or "destroy" is a completely separate term that I think shouldn't be thrown around so easily.
The problem is that the scene doesn't work anymore.
In both the novel and the manhwa, Desir doesn't win the chess match because he is better than Zod, he wins because he makes him hurry. He says in the novel, that he never defeated him in chess before, and also that he is now at a disadvantage, because this Zod plays differently than in the future, so he doesn't know how he will react to his moves.
The only reason he manages to win, is because Zod has a meeting in less than half an hour, and he is a cocky old man, and makes a harsh move that loses him the match.
After this, Desir shows him his idea, and he pretty much loses any and all interest in anyhing that isn't this new shiny thing that he doesn't understand. He cancels his meetings, he gives Desir his credit card, he does not give a fuck! He needs to know what Desir did and he needs to know it NOW! That's his character. This side of him is shown in the novel and manhwa multiple times. If there's a shiny new magic trick he will not care about anything else but that.
And the anime made Desir show him the 'shiny new magic trick' before finishing the match. If Zod's character is the same as the novel and manhwa one, there is no meeting anymore. There is no 'I only have x minutes I need to hurry'. There is no 'There's no way this kid can beat me'.
There is however 'Oh fuck, I have to win, no, I NEED to win, I NEED to know how he did that, I can't risk not winning, there's too much on the line.' and Desir, if this scene made any sense, would now lose. Lose the match, lose the sponsorship, lose the whole story.
And he knew it. He knew how Zod works, he knew how to make him lose, and he made him lose in every other iteration of this story, except for the anime, because anime Desir is apparently a fucking idiot.
And that's why I'm not excited for the 2nd season, and why I hate everything about this, because the story should be over. Desir lost. He didn't have to, of course, but the anime needed half an episode of filler, so something had to be cut, and you know, why not the chess scene? It doesn't have any significance after all. Not like you can ruin the whole show by cutting it, right?
Right? :D

alright from one transfemme tabletop enthusiast to another because I keep seeing you post about Rolemaster and I am nothing if not impressionable and desperate to find a new book to gnaw on and see if I also get weird about it, what's a good entry point for Rolemaster in 2024, what's solid for a sniff test or sampler.
I don't quite want to recommend the latest edition, Rolemaster Unified, as a sampler, because it's divided across four books and only three of those are out as of now. The lack of a good introductory product is one of the worst parts of being a Rolemaster fan. There used to be a version called Rolemaster Express, which was a stripped down version of Rolemaster Classic, but because of copyright conflicts it is no longer available for purchase! (This is incidentally why I think piracy is incredibly cool, because if it weren't for some extremely good people compiling all their Rolemaster Express pdfs onto a cool website that game would be lost.)
But there are a few products I can recommend for a good taste test to see if you too might have Rolemaster brainrot! The first is Lightmaster, a free d20-based clone of Rolemaster. It is not an accurate simulacrum of Rolemaster and it has its own setting, but the vibe of the rules is correct, and it does have the cool attack and critical hit tables while sadly lacking in tables for other activities.
Next is the Against the Darkmaster free quickstart! Against the Darkmaster is for all intents and purposes Rolemaster Lite with some modern game design innovations, so it too would act as a good way to get a light taste of Rolemaster before injecting the raw stuff straight into your eyeballs.
Thirdly, there's this strange GitHub project where some extremely cool person has been transferring all of Rolemaster Standard System onto GitHub, probably to act as a reference and also to preserve the game, because as far as I know RMSS is also no longer available for purchase! This is as good a taste of the actual unbridled Rolemaster stuff as you can get for free!
