In 1995, Tokyo-based Street Magazine (@streetmag) invited Belgian avantgardist MMM to publish a special edition dedicated to its work. Maison Martin Margiela was founded in Paris by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens in 1988. "The Six of Antwerp" made up of Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee is an avant-garde collective of Belgian fashion designers who graduated from Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s under Linda Loppa's eye (head of fashion department). In 1986 - the fashion gang loaded its clothes into a truck and showed up in London where they created a sensation with the audacity of their presentations. As they could not pronounce the designer's names, they just started calling them the "Antwerp Six". The "+" refers to Martin Margiela but also Raf Simons, Vandervorst.. alongside photographers, make-up artists like @ingegrognard, @ronaldstoops, @peterdepotter - who also strenghtened the impact of Antwerp fashion image. Filled with photographs and press articles, this book is a fascinating insight into the processes of a generation of visionaries from Antwerp which fashion legacy still remains (now more than ever).
