Socceroos reach crunch time with FIFA 2026 qualification in sight

Australia’s quick salvage under Tony Popovic in charge for the FIFA World Cup 2026 has left the Socceroos on the point of a place in North America with two group games to play, and an involuntary place could be protected as initial as Friday morning. These two are expected to uphold a very traditional and sugary sweet romantic idea of what it means to be a married couple. Their first meeting will involve a dual scavenger hunt, which will lead them to a meeting place in the studio. They will solve clues throughout the broadcast station, all pointing towards different locations to find the subsequent clue, each with casual notations or references to their respective personalities or groups. When they solves the clues, they’ll be led to an unused studio, where there will be a picnic set up with snacks and music. This will be their icebreaker first date part one. After that they’ll have a stroll through a traditional market, leading to a nearby cafe and will then separate to film their interview portions regarding the first meeting. This prompt can be filled either via a thread referencing these events or a solo that integrates the following interview questions: What is your ideal type? Does your WGM partner match that type? what was your initial reaction? what do you think so far, after your first date?

This filming session is an extension of the previous filming on Jeju Island. Having now been split into pairs for the duration of their stay, they will be spending the next two days on various planned outings with their partner, depending on questionnaires filled out during the plane ride. THere are a few courses the dates may take, from hiking, bike riding along the coast, horseback riding, cafe and food tours, visiting waterfalls, and visiting the green tea museum or folk village! At the end of the 2 days of dates, they will prepare for the grand finale, the filming of which will also take place on the island. Essentially, consider the 3rd, 4th, and 5th filming session to have taken place concurrently on Jeju Island, much as the original show did IRL, in late April-early May, but divided up for the purposes of the rp.

With the pilot set to air early in June, the idols are expected to begin working their way towards the filming of the second and third episodes. Episode 2 gives the characters a glimpse into their pasts on the show, which provides the idols a chance to work with the child actors representing their younger selves. As the school is introduced and focus is narrowed in, we’ll move through introducing the majority of the cast in these filming blocks, which means everyone should be on the top of their game. Episodes will begin airing imminently and the pressure is on for everyone to deliver passable performances that can bring attention to their up and coming groups and careers. It is, also, an ideal time to begin networking with others!

UNPRETTY RAPSTAR. now airing. final filming session.

After a significant run, UPRS is coming to a close. This episode filming will cover the final three members of the show competing to perform a joint song, with each taking a verse, and a notable second generation female vocalist taking on the chorus and vocal parts. They’re all given the same amount of time to work on their verse and are not allowed to adjust the instrumental. Then, the final two will face off with their own performance over a beat given by a guest producer. This time they are allowed to make minor modifications. Live voting at the 200 person performance as well as via the televised audience through text votes determines the final winner. The finale will air in mid June.

SHOW ME THE MONEY. now airing. final filming session.

With an impressive run, SMTM will be finishing up the season with this opportunity prompt. Similar to its sister show, the final three contestants will be battling it out. However, each is given the opportunity to perform with their mentor from the show on a shortened track. The same stipulations of not making adjustments to the beat are provided, and it will be performed in a similar venue, in front of 200 people, as well as televised live. The initial round of voting will eliminate one contestant, and the final two will go on to perform a rap done to a beat given by a guest producer (to which minor modifications may be made).  The final voting will determine the winner, with 50% from the audience present and 50% from the sms voting. 

SIBLINGS DAY OUT. now filming: boys. 1st filming session.

To break the ice and celebrate the early days of summer, the boys will be heading out to a pension in the countryside! They’ll take a nice hike, enjoy nature, and finally return to their lodgings,  where they will have the chance to cook a meal together (including grilling some delicious meat!) with each required to make a special dish for the other. After that, they’ll have the chance to sit around the fire pit on the patio and discuss the ups and downs of idol life, giving and getting advice in turn, from one another, and hopefully opening their hearts to one another more and more! This will of course be paired with the usual studio interview interspersed thereafter, which will be filmed once the boys return to Seoul. Filming will last for 1 night and 2 days. 

IDOL DRAMA OPERATION TEAM. now airing. 4th filming session (boy team and girl team).

As we approach the penultimate filming sessions, the teams will take on the hardest part of the process- recording and promoting their webseries! It will be a project that takes a good bit of time to complete, and thus the filming will be split over this and the next, final, opportunity prompt for the show. Interspersed with acting coaching moments and content from behind the scenes of the show, the teams will be spending time promoting via a fansign and filming the promotional spots for the webseries. These promotional spots will be between 10 and 30 seconds long and will be aired on the network to advertise the webshow, hosted on the network’s website. Get ready to act and promote your pants off, kids, we’re heading towards the grand finale!

As the show winds down, we find more and more of the episodes feature the interactions between the castmates. Playing games together, domestic activities, and volunteering opportunities are the name of the game. Today it is announced that they will be joint fostering three kittens until the end of the show. They’re tasked with preparing the house for the little kittens, purchasing the necessary items, naming them, and helping them get used to their environment in this episode block. They’ll also briefly volunteer at the shelter from which the animals came, as well as do a promotional photoshoot for adoption awareness.

With the two groups thus far tied, we face an enthusiastic response from the audience, who have submitted songs from current years for our newest challenge. The two teams have been assigned the most voted on submissions from the website, with the results as follows. The Blue Team will be working with their mentor’s choreography to perform Far East Movement’s Bang it to the Curb while the Red Team was voted to perform their mentor’s choreography for Imagine Dragon’s Radioactive. With the finale fast approaching, the result was left on a cliffhanger, with the members themselves still unsure of the outcome pending the final episode.

Kidnap, Racism and a Beaten Bike...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (22nd - 26th April 2019)

The daggers were out for Sienna this week following her accusation of sexual harassment towards Laurie at the Easter fete. Despite most of the village being on his side, Laurie found himself suspended from work pending investigation but this didn’t make Sienna feel any better as she realised that no one other that Brody and Liberty believed her. Brody was so enraged by the injustice of the situation that he did what every Hollyoaks resident does in times of crisis and resorted to kidnap! However, kidnapping Laurie only made the situation worse, as Sienna pointed out that Laurie could use it against her. As Sienna met with Sally to discuss her complaint against Laurie, the headteacher informed her that they’d had concerns from parents, and she felt it would be best if Sienna didn’t continue her training at Hollyoaks High, for now at least, leaving Sienna devastated.

Meanwhile, despite standing in support of Laurie publicly, it was clear that Sinead was privately having doubts about his innocence and her concerns were seemingly proven when Laurie grabbed hold of her. Sinead’s screams were heard by Hannah, and it was this altercation that made Sinead see that she had to get herself and Hannah away. Lying to Laurie that Misbah was sending her on a residential training course, Sinead packed a bag and planned to leave, collecting Hannah from nursery on the way. However, her plan was rumbled when Laurie dropped into the hospital to find out more about the course, and Misbah revealed that she knew nothing about it. Unfortunately for Sinead, she hadn’t managed to flee in time, and she was talked into giving Laurie another chance. 

Elsewhere this week, Ste’s extremism story was back to the forefront as he posted an offensive meme about Misbah online. Ste was delighted by the positive response that Stuart and Jonny gave his ‘creativity’ but one person who wasn’t happy was Peri, and she demanded that Ste remove the meme. The bad atmosphere between Ste and Peri soon escalated when Peri told Ste about Jonny’s crush on her. Ste felt betrayed, however, with encouragement from Stuart, decided to forgive Jonny, and the group ordered a takeaway. However, the delivery driver turned out to be Shahid, the man that Jonny and Stuart had viciously beaten a few weeks back. Shahid was horrified to come face to face with his attackers, and the next day, returned to the village and told Jonny about the impact that the attack had had on his life. Typically, Jonny couldn’t have cared less and a fight broke out between the two men. Jonny ended up falling over during the ruckus and Stuart insisted that he visit the hospital, even though he wasn’t badly injured. Ste was concerned for his family’s safety following the attack, but he was soon in for an even bigger shock when Stuart revealed that Shahid was the man they had beaten up at the football match...

Despite initially wanting to call the police, Ste was talked round by Stuart, who insisted that they had to teach Shahid a lesson. With encouragement from Stuart, Ste phoned the same takeaway and Shahid’s brother, Amir, soon arrived at The Teahouse. With Stuart, Jonny, and the rest of the racists shouting words of encouragement, Ste angrily trashed Amir’s motorbike. The situation was captured on camera by one of Stuart’s mates, claiming that it would be their insurance if Ste ever got cold feet...

In other news this week, James tricked Donna-Marie into confessing to Mac’s murder whilst Martine and Lisa tried to put a smile back on Scott’s face by organising a quiz night. In a bid to cheer Walter up, Cleo and Goldie set him up on a date with Marnie, much to her horror! Finally, over at The Dog, Mercedes was beginning to tire of Breda’s interference in their lives and asked her to leave. However, after seeing how much the murdering nanny meant to Max and Bobby, she relented and allowed her to stay. 

5 Things We Learned This Week:

1. The parents of Hollyoaks High are a strange bunch. Apparently a trainee teacher reporting someone for sexual harassment should not be tolerated and they’re concerned about Sienna being around their kids. As a result, they have to let her go. This is the very same school that continued to employ Patrick Blake after he’d been accused of domestic violence! No consistency! 

2. Marnie’s had lots of embarrassing moments since she arrived in Hollyoaks. She’s had to wear a curfew tag after taking the blame for pushing Mac from a window, she spent months living in the McQueen’s hovel after she was made homeless and she had to share a bed with Cindy Cunningham night after night. But the worst thing to ever happen to her is, of course, being set up on a date with the local shopkeeper. Oh, the shame! 

3. Prior to this week, Ste didn’t know what a ‘meme’ was. He’s got so much catching up to do! There’s a whole world of amusement and wasted hours awaiting him! 

4. Breda likes to do all the voices when she reads a story to Max and Bobby. I bet she’s great at the baddies! 

5. Hollyoaks loves an original business idea. Goldie managed to pick up a tanning booth from The Emporium and Nana was immediately seeing pound signs. Get ready for ‘Golden Grannies’! Now, remind me what happened to Ste’s tanning business, again?

The Hibees have had a mixed bag of results so far this campaign, with three points in four outings. But boss Lee Johnston reckons big games like this will allow his side to shine.

Hibernian host Glasgow giants Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday lunchtime.  Hibs have endured a decidedly mixed start to the new campaign, following up an opening day victory with a 95th-minute equaliser in the Edinburgh derby, Lee Johnson's side lost away to Livingston last weekend.

Rangers experienced their own range of emotions in the space of 90 exhilarating minutes against PSV Eindhoven in midweek. The Gers drew 2-2 at Ibrox in the first leg of their final Champions League qualifier after falling behind and taking the lead.  Here's everything you need to know about the meeting between this up and down duo.  A draw against Hearts was followed up by a 2-1 loss at the hands of Livingston in their most recent outing, which is something that they will now be attempting to put behind them.  The Hibees fell behind in the sixth minute of that game, but an equaliser from Nohan Kenneh seemed to provide Lee Johnson's team with some hope, only for them to concede an 86th-minute goal in the 86th minute.

Last season the club finished eighth, which they are aiming to improve upon, with a potential victory at the weekend giving them the chance to potentially move up to third place.  In order to do that Hibernian will need to do something that they failed at last season, which is defeat Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers were dominant in their performances against the Hibees in the SPL during the 2021-22 campaign which led to them picking up nine points from their three matches.  Ultimately, those results were not enough for Rangers to win the title as they fell short of the mark, but they have immediately started this season in strong form as they look to get back on top.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has witnessed his team win all three of their opening league games in impressive fashion, with the latest outing seeing them defeat St Johnstone 4-0.  All four goals came from different players in that match, showcasing the attacking qualities that the Gers have across the squad, while their defensive abilities were just as clear as they secured their second clean sheet of the season.  Rangers also continued their European campaign in midweek with a 2-2 draw against PSV where Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence got on the scoresheet, with their second leg taking place next week.

Both Rocky Bushiri and Josh Campbell are in contention to be available for Hibernian this weekend after returning to training during the week, which would provide a major boost to Johnson's options.

Saturday's fixture will come too soon for Kyle Magennis though, who has been on the shelf for 11 months, as he is not expected to be back on the grass in team sessions until the end of this month, while Aiden McGeady is also unavailable due to a knee ligament problem.  Kevin Nesbit has been involved in some aspects of training, but he is also not expected to be available for the Hibees yet, and Demetri Mitchell is also injured due to a hamstring problem.  James Sands was able to return for Rangers in midweek despite an illness that kept him out of the 4-0 win against St Johnstone, and he should retain his place in the back line.  Alfredo Morelos was an unused substitute in their recent European outing as the forward continued to battle back to full fitness, which will likely provide Colak with more opportunities.

I had an ok couple of weeks. I was pretty ill in the middle, but I got some good work done overall. .wav files are now supported, PSD files get thumbnails, vacuum returns, and the Client API allows much cleverer search.

I have added some features to the Client API. It was more complicated than I expected, so I couldn't get everything I wanted done, but I think this is a decent step forward.

First off, the main 'search for files' routine now supports many system predicates. This is thanks to a user who wrote a great system predicate text parser a long time ago. I regret I am only catching up with his work now, since it works great. I expect to roll it into normal autocomplete typing as well--letting you type 'system:width<500' and actually getting the full predicate object in the results list to select.

There's a giant list of the current supported inputs. You'll just be submitting system predicates as text, and it handles the rest. It turns out FFMPEG can figure this out as long as the PSD isn't too complicated, so I've done it like for .swf files--if it works, the PSD gets a nice thumbnail, and if it doesn't it gets the file default icon stretched to the correct ratio. When you update, all existing PSDs will be queued for a thumbnail regen, so they should sort themselves out in the background.

Thanks to profiles users sent in, I optimised some database code. Repository processing and large file deletes should be a little faster. I had a good look at some slow session save profiles--having hundreds of thousands of URLs in downloader pages currently eats a ton of CPU during session autosave--but the solution will require two rounds of significant work.

Database vacuum returns as a manual job. I disabled this a month or so ago as it was always a rude sledgehammer that never actually achieved all that much. Now there is some UI under database->db maintenance->review vacuum data that shows each database file separately with their current free space (i.e. what a vacuum will recover), whether it looks like you have enough space to vacuum, an estimate of vacuum time, and then the option to vacuum on a per file basis. If you recently deleted the PTR, please check it out, as you may be able to recover a whole ton of disk space.

I fixed Mr Bones! I knew I'd typo somewhere with the file service rewrite two weeks ago, and he got it. I hadn't realised how popular he was, so I've added him to my weekly test suite--it shouldn't happen again.

/get_files/search_files now supports most system predicates! simply submit normal system predicate text in your taglist (check the expanded api help for a list of what is supported now) and they should be converted to proper system preds automatically. anything that doesn't parse will give 400 response. this is thanks to a user that submitted a system predicate parser a long time ago and which I did not catch up on until now. with this framework established, in future I will be able to add more predicate types and allow this parsing in normal autocomplete typing (issue #351)

this is a complicated system with many possible inputs and outputs! I have tried to convert all the object types over and fill out unit tests, but there are likely some typos or bad error handling for some unusual predicates. let me know what problems you run into, and I'll fix it up!

the old system_inbox and system_archive parameters on /get_files/search_files are now obselete. they still work, but I recommend you just use tags now. I'll deprecate them fully in future

/get_files/search_files now disables the implicit system limit that most clients apply to all searches (by default, 10,000), so if you ask for a million files, you'll (eventually) get it

a new call /manage_pages/add_files now allows you to add files to any media page, just like a file drag and drop

in the /get_files/file_metadata call, the tag lists in the different 'statuses' Objects are now human-sorted

added a link to https://github.com/floogulinc/hyextract to the client api help. this lets you extract from imported archives and reimport with tags and URLs

simple psd files now have thumbnails! complicated ones will get a stretched version of the old default psd filetype thumbnail, much like how flash works. all your psd files are queued up for thumbnail regen on update, so they should figure themselves out in the background. this is thanks to ffmpeg, which it turns out can handle simple psds!

vacuum returns as a manual operation. there's some new gui under _database->db maintenance->review vacuum data_. it talks about vacuum, shows current free space for each file, gives an estimate of how long vacuum will take, and allows you to launch vacuum on particular files

the 'maintenance and processing' option that checks CPU usage for 'system busy' status now lets you choose how many CPU cores must exceed the % value (previously, one core exceeding the value would cause 'busy'). maybe 4 > 25% is more useful than 1 > 50% in some situations?

removed the warning when updating from v411-v436. user reports and more study suggest this range was most likely ok in the end!

Superbowl Sunday is finally here with KC matching up with TB.

First, let’s start out with This season’s record for my plays in the NFL:

Season to Date Sides:  17-8-2 or 68%

Season to Date Totals: 8-7  or 53.33%

Combined Season to Date: 25-15-2 or 62.5%

If you are laying -110 on these picks you would be +8.5 Units for the NFL Season.

Not a lot of plays, but it was a very steady NFL season with virtually no drawdown.  I will take these results every year:)

As those of you that have been following me for the last 12+ years I have been online, the NFL has been as steady a sport for me as you will find. While most struggle every year in the NFL, for some reason I find it the easiest to handicap.

All my past year records are available either here on this site, On slack, or on Google sheets. If anyone has any interest in all my past records just send me an email and I will provide them for you if you cannot find them.

So that brings us to today’s Superbowl.

Every season I give the caveat that you do not have to wager on the game. I look at it as one game of many. Unless you are a fan, which I am, as a gambler you only make wagers if you feel you have an edge.

That is the purpose of handicapping, to try to determine if there is a positive EV wager on a game.

No two handicappers have the same methods. Some use an analysis of the player matchups, some use external variables, many use a combination of techniques.

One thing is certain in all of this. While handicappers may share their picks, the good handicappers will not share their methodology. This is something they have generated over many years of hard work.

I have been handicapping now for over 40 years:)  I can tell you when it comes to handicapping sports nothing is static. What worked 5 years ago most likely does not work well now. So you have to constantly evaluate your methods and adjust when needed. It is time-consuming and requires a substantial amount of knowledge of various handicapping methods. Including the ability to develop your own methods that few handicappers use.

But much of what I wrote years ago still has some significance today. I typically do not write articles, but a poker player who I became friends with worked for 2 +2 and asked me to write an article for them as he followed some of my handicapping.

Now, let’s start my analysis of today’s game:

Let me start out by saying as I always do every Superbowl, that you do not have to wager on this game. Most bettors feel some compulsion not only to wager on it but also to wager more than they typically do over the season. It is similar to poker players who play 8/16 Omaha 8 all year round trying to grind out a few 100 a day. But then the world series rolls around, and you see the same players in the 75/150 Omaha 8 game. It’s the same mindset. What they have done is essentially have their entire year depend on how they do in 4 to 5 weeks of 75/150  after spending the other 47 weeks playing 8/16.

Saying that let’s look at the game to see if I see something worth betting on here. The models lean toward TB. Of course, at +3.5 there would have been enough EV to wager on the game. At +3 your edge if you have one is so slight its not worth betting. Remember the lower the edge the higher the variance. The variables lean even less to TB than the models. The public % edge is absent. At 41% on a +3 game, there is no edge. And there is no line move edge as the line has stayed pretty steady on this game. I look at Cris for that number. Pinnacle’s line comes out after Cris. You want to use the book that puts out the line first for that.

As far as the Total I do not see any value at all in the total. No leans either way on that wager.

Myself, I will not be betting the game. At least as the numbers stand right now. If the line were to move to +3.5 I will take another look at the game.

Now I know some of you are going to ask why I did not take +3.5 when it was available. The way I handicap most sports is I look at a number of things that move around right up until game time. So I did not know what all the numbers were going to be weeks ago.

These trades include Mean reversion trades, swing trades, income trades and options trades. The option trades are restricted to selling puts and calls for income.

When sports betting was shut down completely I started doing some research on a short put selling technique where you would sell a put that expired after the close the next day. These trades are made on Thursday morning and either expire Friday after the close or you take delivery of the stock if it closes below the strike price. (which rarely happens)

Since I started sharing these with subscribers this is a graph of those trades:

As you can see there have been 265 trades with a 93.58% win rate and a profit factor of 4.57

A few things to note on these is that most have annualized returns of over 40% and the drawdown has been minimal.

We had a brief consolidation around trade 81 and pulled out of it around trade 110 and then had our only drawdown around trade 143 and recovered it all by trade 172. Other than that it has been virtually straight up.

It’s rare to find a trading method as consistent as this. Although, We are only looking at 265 trades. I suspect we will be over 500 trades by year-end and will have a better picture of whether these numbers are going to hold up.

Now These short puts are only those I sell on Thursday for Friday expiration. There are other short put sales I make where I would not mind owning the stock at the strike price. These typically are 1 month out short put trades.

Since posting these trades I have only made 8 closed trades with 7 winners and 1 loser for a profit factor of 11.85. I have at last count 4 or 5 of these trades pending right now for expiration Feb 19th. All are far away from the strike price.

In addition, they all produce annualized returns of over 40% if they expire.

The mean reversion trades I have posted have a 70.83% win rate with a profit factor of 6.34.

So far I have posted 24 of these types of trades.

When a football match in 1969 caused a war between the two countries

New York, 29,5,2020, Friday

El Salvador beat Honduras 6-3 in the 19th FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament. This began to hit the citizens of El Salvador origin living in Honduras. The popular demand to invade Honduras and teach a lesson similar to football in war was gaining momentum in El Salvador. Cricket is played in a handful of countries while the game of football is popular in every continent of the world.

Whether it is Africa or America, Europe or Latin America, there is a kind of passion for football. Held every two years, the FIFA World Cup is the biggest football event. The atmosphere in the stadium becomes tense due to emotion and excitement during a football match. Sometimes there are incidents where supporters get into fights. However, it would be surprising to know that a football match caused a war between the two countries. In the history of football, it is known as football war or soccer war.

The 16th FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament was between the Latin American country of Honduras and El Salvador. The country that wins by an average will have a chance to participate in the World Cup to be held in 190. Honduras and Salvador are both neighbors but relations have always been sour. El Salvador is five times smaller than Honduras in terms of area on the northwestern border of Honduras. In the 20th century, there was ample border between the two countries.

The people of the Mestizo ethnic group moved and lived freely. Large numbers of refugees began arriving in Honduras from El Salvador, especially after 150 AD. Eighty percent of Honduras' population, or one in five, were native to El Salvador. Displaced people of El Salvador descent also became owners of arable land and property in Honduras over time. In 190, more than half a million people came to Honduras from Salvador.

The people of Salvadoran origin in Honduras lived with their identities rather than merging. This often led to violent riots and fights between the two groups. The problem of refugee citizens of El Salvador origin was also a burning question in Honduran politics. In 1903, the Honduran government began the process of stripping people of El Salvador descent of their land rights and property. On the 19th, the border to El Salvador was sealed off and the entry of refugees was stopped. The Honduran government blamed neighboring El Salvador for the growing chaos and intolerance in the country.

On the one hand, the harsh action of the Honduran government created a nationalist atmosphere at home, on the other hand, the people of the neighboring country of El Salvador and the government were incensed by the action of the Honduran government. In this regard, relations between the two countries became tense and the citizens living together began to be harassed. In such a delicate period, the football match between Honduras and El Salvador served to ignite the fire. The first match of the qualifying round was played on June 16 in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. People of El Salvador descent living in Honduras favored the El Salvador football team and provoked local football fans. So the Honduran extremists threw stones at the hotel where the El Salvador football players landed.

Honduras won the first match 1-0 in a tense and tense atmosphere. The result of the match in El Salvador caused Ritsar to mourn. Eighteen-year-old Amelia Bolanos was watching a match on TV in El Salvador. When Honduras striker Roberto Cardano scored in the last minute, he got angry. The coach kept applauding the players despite losing, saying that if you had won the match you probably wouldn't have survived. The third match of the qualifying round between Honduras and El Salvador was pending. FIFA decided to hold the last match in Mexico City in a neutral place due to tension. The clash on June 8 saw a thorny issue between the two countries.

In the final, El Salvador won the match 3-2, qualifying for the 150th World Cup for the first time. News of El Salvador's defeat to Honduras in a football match spread through the airwaves and began to hit citizens of El Salvador descent in Honduras. The demand to invade Honduras and teach it a lesson similar to football in the war gained momentum in El Salvador. The El Salvador government came under so much pressure that it finally attacked Honduras on July 15 with tanks and fighter jets. Honduras also responded to the attack. A 100-hour war broke out between the two countries in which more than 2,000 people were killed. Women were raped and hundreds were left homeless. As international pressure mounted, both countries agreed to declare a ceasefire. Both countries have been knocked out by the International Court of Justice on the issue of refugees.

Kirk Cousins 2018 NFL free agency sweepstakes

Just how much will quarterback Kirk Cousins make when he hits the open market next month, and what could the contract he signs look like?

We asked NFL Nation reporters to make their best offer — on behalf of the teams they cover — to the most-coveted free agent, who won’t be back in Washington after the Redskins traded for Alex Smith.

We wanted specifics and perspective, so the offers below are based on what each reporter believes their team’s front office will do, and how said team views free agents and quarterbacks.

We then had ESPN NFL Insider Mike Sando take on the role of Cousins’ agent and pick the best offer for his client. Check out which one he picked here.

The Jets can make Cousins the highest-paid player in the league without significantly hurting their ability to build a strong supporting cast around him. They have approximately $73 million in salary-cap room, and that amount will exceed $90 million once they’re finished with veteran cuts. In other words, they have the flexibility to address their biggest needs on offense — center, tight end and wide receiver. They can welcome Cousins to New Jersey with a nice housewarming gift in the form of Allen Robinson or another playmaker.

The quarterback is a pending free agent, and the Redskins just traded for Alex Smith, which means Cousins could become the NFL’s highest-paid player in 2018. You like that?! Here’s where he could land.

While the Jaguars are believed to be interested in Kirk Cousins, the stats indicate they may be better off sticking with the less-pricey Blake Bortles.

You’ll notice the first-year cash payout is $52 million — $1 million more than Lions QB Matthew Stafford received on his record-setting deal last year. The Jets are in a unique position; they can afford to front-load the contract with a huge roster bonus, absorbing a massive cap hit ($36 million) in Year 1. That will result in lower cap hits in subsequent years.

Looking into the future, they will have the same flexibility in 2019, as no key players will be eligible for free agency. They can continue to build the foundation without having to worry about dumping contracts to stay under the cap. Yes, there are holes in the lineup, but it’s a young team on the rise. Only one current starter is over 30 — nose tackle Steve McLendon. They unloaded most of the deadwood last year, cleaning up the cap in the process.

If scheme familiarity is important, this is the place. New offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates will install Mike Shanahan’s version of the West Coast offense. It should be old hat for Cousins, who played under Shanahan in 2012-13 with the Redskins. Knowing the playbook will make the transition to a new city and a new team that much easier. Bates is from the Shanahan coaching tree, the same tree that produced 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and the Rams’ Sean McVay. Bates sees the game the same way as them, and that will create a comfort level that can’t be duplicated anywhere else.

Lastly, there’s legacy. The fan base, hungry for a Super Bowl after a 49-year drought, is waiting to throw its arms around a savior. A total of 30 quarterbacks have started for the Jets in the post-Joe Namath era, only four of whom have produced a winning record, let alone a championship. If the Broncos want to sign Cousins, they will have to make him the NFL’s highest-paid player and give him one of the biggest contracts in league history. Why? Just look at San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo and his $137.5 million deal with seven NFL starts on his résumé.

Cousins’ camp will almost certainly put the asking price at something close to a $30 million per year average and Stafford’s $60.5 million fully guaranteed at signing — still the highest total of any deal. That’s where the Broncos will have to be to get it done, especially if the Jets or Browns, with far more cap room, are willing to go big. The Broncos already have a nine-digit contract on the books in linebacker Von Miller‘s $114.5 million deal. He is set to enter Year 3 of the six-year contract.

Why should Cousins choose Denver? The Broncos will sell Peyton Manning’s tenure, as they are the only team in the running for Cousins that once signed a high-profile quarterback in free agency and kept their promise to build a roster around him. The result was two Super Bowl trips in four years for Manning, one Super Bowl win, and another free-agency binge in 2014 that reeled in receiver Emmanuel Sanders, DeMarcus Ware, safety T.J. Ward and cornerback Aqib Talib. If Broncos GM and executive VP of football operations John Elway tells Cousins the Broncos will do what’s necessary to build around the quarterback — and they already have a top-five defense — the proof is in the trophy case.

If Denver is going to keep the roster deep and talented, it will have to cap Cousins’ offer in that $30 million per year range and try to lure Cousins with more guarantees. Stafford’s deal has $92 million in potential total guarantees, and the Broncos guaranteed almost every dollar in Manning’s four-year contract in 2012 to snag the future Hall of Famer.

Denver did the same with Miller in negotiations, sticking to the $114.5 million total and closing the deal by increasing the guarantees.

The Broncos will have to create some room to sign Cousins; they have approximately $26 million in cap space. Veteran players such as Talib ($11 million cap space created if released) and running back C.J. Anderson ($4.5 million in cap space created if released) would be at the front of the line. — Jeff Legwold, ESPN Broncos reporter

The Vikings have their chance to (finally) sign a long-term option at quarterback. Minnesota has the eighth-most cap space of all teams with an estimated $57 million, which means it could allocate upward of $30 million in 2018 for a quarterback.

If the Vikings choose not to re-sign any of their upcoming free-agent quarterbacks (Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford), Cousins could be the primary target. The sweet spot for the team is around $28 million per year for Cousins, who has performed at a consistent level the past three years, doesn’t have a history of injuries, and has the potential to be a franchise quarterback and put Minnesota over the top.

Minnesota likely cannot offer as much as teams with more cap room. The Vikings have several young and talented players — receiver Stefon Diggs, linebacker Anthony Barr, linebacker Eric Kendricks, cornerback Trae Waynes and defensive end Danielle Hunter — due for extensions in 2019 and will be tight against the cap even if they don’t sign a quarterback to a huge deal.

But the Vikings’ offer is strong for a few reasons. Take a look at all the weapons Cousins would have on offense, in addition to being backed by the league’s top defense. And with the return of a healthy Dalvin Cook, the Vikings will add even more playmaking. Another bonus? If playing closer to home/family is on his wish list, the Michigan native/Michigan State grad will always be guaranteed a yearly trip to play in Detroit. Although Cousins has no history with new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, the former Eagles assistant is seen as a bright offensive mind.

Cousins made it known during Super Bowl week that he wants to go to a team that can help him achieve success quickly. Minnesota made it to the NFC Championship Game last season and is poised to return stronger in 2018. What solidifies how far the Vikings will be able to go is whom they have under center. — Courtney Cronin, ESPN Vikings reporter

The Jaguars can offer Cousins the money he wants as well as the opportunity to win a Super Bowl. The latter is obvious based on the team’s run to the AFC Championship Game last season. The defense was one of the NFL’s best — ranking first against the pass and second in sacks, turnovers and scoring — and every starter returns in 2018.

The Jaguars led the NFL in rushing, and with some additional work on the offensive line in the draft and a year of experience for running back Leonard Fournette, their running game should again be the focal point of the offense. Re-signing (or using the franchise tag on) wide receiver Allen Robinson is a priority to give the offense the downfield threat it lacked last season because of his injury. It’s a good draft class at tight end, so the Jaguars will boost their talent there, too. That means everything is in place for a deep playoff run with the right quarterback. Teams went all-out to stop the run last season because they did not respect Blake Bortles. That won’t happen with Cousins, and the Jaguars’ offense would no longer play second fiddle to the defense.

As for the money, the Jaguars have approximately $16.5 million in cap space for 2018. Take away $10 million to sign the draft class and that leaves the team with $6.5 million. The Jaguars can clear $19.053 million by cutting Bortles. Cutting running back Chris Ivory ($3.87 million) and receiver Allen Hurns ($7 million) would help, too. That would leave the Jaguars with approximately $36.4 million in available cap space — more than enough to afford Cousins — and that’s not even adding in any other veteran cuts, salary-cap savings and cap rollover.

The Jaguars structure their free-agent contracts and extensions to include all (or nearly all) of the guaranteed money in the first two years, so a lot of money gets freed up in 2019 from defensive end Calais Campbell, cornerback A.J. Bouye, defensive tackle Malik Jackson and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus. — Michael DiRocco, ESPN Jaguars reporter

If the Browns decide Cousins is the answer, they need to act with certainty and aggressively. They also have to recognize that the bidding for Cousins will be higher than it ever has been, and that coming off a 1-31 record they are at a severe disadvantage in selling their team and culture. The failure of the past two seasons means the Browns have to overpay. So be it.

They start from strength with a league-leading $110 million in salary-cap space. Their highest offer for Cousins shouldn’t even make them blink.

That’s why $33 million per season over six seasons for Cousins is the offer. It bypasses all the per-game bonus nonsense and other stuff that would only tell Cousins the offer is good, but the team is also worried. It’s a direct offer designed to appeal to him, and based on the premise the Browns believe he is “the guy.”

After Year 3, Cousins would be due an $8 million roster bonus. This gives the Browns an out. If 2021 is the year they want to turn to a young quarterback, they don’t pay the bonus and Cousins is a free agent, able to command another large deal. If Cousins has them in the playoffs or even (gasp) reaches a Super Bowl, the Browns will happily pay it.

Garoppolo set the floor for Cousins, but this offer is one year longer, its per-year average is higher ($33 million to $27.5 million) and its three-year average also is higher ($32.2 million to $28.4 million). Let Cousins turn that down. — Pat McManamon, ESPN Browns reporter

With approximately $22.5 million in cap space available, the Cardinals aren’t in a position to sign Cousins in their current economic state. They’d have to make space available if they want a shot at giving Cousins the type of deal that could convince him to come to Arizona. Any deal the Cardinals offer Cousins would have to be back-loaded, at least after Year 1, when their salary-cap situation improves drastically starting in 2019.

With new coach Steve Wilks wanting to be aggressive in free agency, the Cardinals would have to give themselves enough breathing room to chase other players as well. Cutting tackle Jared Veldheer, guard Mike Iupati and linebacker Deone Bucannon would create about $21 million more in space, giving Arizona about $43.5 million left to use — enough to give Cousins a sizable and back-loaded contract that doesn’t weigh down Arizona’s cap in 2018. The Cardinals don’t have any big-ticket players they need to re-sign, but they could be in play for a high-priced wide receiver or cornerback. A back-loaded deal with Cousins would give them flexibility to be aggressive in free agency.

As long as the Cardinals can get through 2018 with a manageable cap number, they’ll be in the clear. They’ll have about $90 million available starting in 2019, giving them ample space with which to work. In this proposed offer, Cousins’ first year with the Cardinals would net him $45 million, which includes a $15 million roster bonus. He’d earn $20 million in base salaries the next two seasons with $12.5 million in roster bonuses available each season, which would very likely be earned. The only year that wouldn’t come with a guaranteed salary would be the fifth season.

The Cardinals are in serious need of a long-term answer at quarterback. With offensive pieces in place for 2018 such as receiver Larry Fitzgerald, running back David Johnson and tight end Jermaine Gresham, Arizona would give Cousins an immediate chance of winning. — Josh Weinfuss, ESPN Cardinals reporter

If Cousins was interested in joining a team that made the playoffs last season, the Bills would have an edge over the Broncos and Jets, who both missed the postseason. Signing Cousins also would allow Buffalo to use its four draft picks in the first two rounds this April to build a better team around him, instead of packaging some of those picks to trade up for a quarterback.

Cousins’ price tag and long-term financial commitment make him an unlikely target for Buffalo, but it’s still possible to craft an offer. There are two main goals for the Bills in an offer. One would be to minimize Cousins’ salary-cap impact in 2018, when Buffalo is still relatively tight against the cap. The second goal would be to give the Bills an easy way out of the deal after 2018 in order to turn the offense over to a developing draft pick.

If the Bills trade or release quarterback Tyrod Taylor, they should have about $35 million in cap space. In order to give Buffalo enough cap space to re-sign some of its key free agents — or find replacements — the Bills would need to keep Cousins’ cap hit in the range of $15 million to $20 million.

Buffalo’s offer to Cousins would be a fully guaranteed base salary of $18 million in 2018, with an additional $10 million in not-likely-to-be-earned incentives for passing touchdowns, passing yards and playoff wins that would hit the Bills’ cap in 2019 if earned.

The Bills would then have the choice to “buy in” to another four seasons of Cousins in the form of a $40 million option bonus due by the start of the 2019 league year, which would count $10 million against the salary cap from 2019 through 2022. The option bonus would then trigger fully guaranteed base salaries of $20 million in 2019 and 2020, as well as non-guaranteed base salaries of $24 million in 2021 and 2022. Which offer should Cousins take?

The Jaguars are the choice, and it’s a relatively easy one to make. My client wants a fair deal maximizing his ability to win right away. The deal with Jacksonville sacrifices average per year relative to the other offers, but the $28 million average still resets the current market. My client has earned more than $40 million over the past two seasons, so squeezing out every last dollar from a new deal is not critical. The absence of a state income tax in Florida lets my client keep a larger share of his income anyway. Every other offer comes from teams situated in states with an income tax. Rates are especially high in places such as Minnesota, New York and New Jersey.

The Browns’ offer is legit in some ways, but after living under questionable management in Washington all these years, my client isn’t ready to trust Cleveland’s ownership. The Jets’ offer was another strong one, but I’m not sure what the future holds for the leadership there, and the tabloids will crush my client if the team doesn’t contend for whatever reason. Denver is intriguing for the win-now potential and the opportunity to develop trust with a general manager in John Elway who understands the position. However, the Broncos’ four-year commitment was on the lean side.

By making wrist and hand ergonomics central to workplace operations, industry leaders, employers, and employees can prevent hand injuries and ensure a more productive environment. However, there are common misconceptions about how the workplace contributes to the development of wrist and hand conditions and how to prevent them.

If your mouse is placed too far away, you’ll be forced to repeatedly stretch your arm outward and risk making awkward hand and wrist movements

MYTH 3: Only Repetitive Activities In The Workplace Can Contribute To The Development Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

It is not only repetitive or prolonged wrist motions that can trigger carpal tunnel. Certain working conditions can contribute as well. Examples include:

Exerting force with your hands

Being in an awkward position (e.g., tasks that involve reaching above the shoulder or the angulation of your wrists)

Excessive and continuous vibration from tools or gadgets you use (vibrations can cause the tissue to swell, causing carpal tunnel symptoms to flare up)

Cold temperatures (an extremely cold office can restrict blood flow, causing muscle tissue to expand and add pressure on the median nerve)

MYTH 4: It Is Best to Always Use The Same Tools, Gadgets, And Equipment 

Actually, you should consider switching things up and trying a different tool or grip when working. Many employees benefit from using a split, V-shaped keyboard. You can try it for a week and see which style works best for you. And when using tools and gadgets, try modifying the way you hold them or simply switch hands.

Q: How Should I Setup My Workstation?

A: It is important to take a comprehensive and holistic view of your workstation. Aside from keeping all your necessities (keyboard, mouse, documents, and supplies) no more than 16-18 inches away to avoid awkward movements while reaching for them, you also have to think about your desk, chair, and monitor. This UW Health article explains what an ergonomically correct workstation is:

Your computer monitor should be at your eye level

Using a telephone headset will help you avoid any awkward movements while typing, talking, or doing other tasks

A wrist pad at the bottom of the keyboard will help keep your wrists in a neutral, almost straight position (not bent up or down) while you take a break from typing. When typing or using your mouse, try raising your forearms a little so your wrists are in a neutral position while allowing your arms and hands to move freely. When resting your arms on your chair, make sure your forearms are parallel to the floor and your wrists are neutral. 

Using a footrest will help reduce the pressure on your lower back

Armrests should allow your elbows to be close to the side of your body and bend at an angle between 90-100 degrees.

Your chair should be adjustable. Modifying its height will allow your feet to rest on the floor or on a footrest. The back of the chair should also be adjustable to accommodate different positions.

Aside from having an ergonomically correct workstation, be sure to have little breaks every hour. You can also do wrist stretching exercises to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.

Q: Should I Get A Wrist Rest?

A: Any support given to the wrists and forearms can help ease a lot of muscular tension from the neck, shoulders, and arms, as well as prevent any other parts of the body from having unnecessary strain or pressure. Therefore, any rest device should be selected as part of an ergonomically-designed workstation. If choosing to use a wrist rest, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suggests the following:

Your hands and wrists should move freely and be elevated above the wrist/palm rest while typing. When resting, the pad should contact the heel or palm of your hand, not your wrist.

Reduce bending of the wrists by adjusting other workstation components (chair, desk, keyboard) so the wrist can maintain an in-line, neutral posture.

Match the wrist support to the width, height, and slope of the front edge of the keyboard (keeping in mind that the goal is to keep wrist postures as straight as possible).

Provide wrist/palm supports that are fairly soft and rounded to minimize pressure on the wrist. The support should be at least 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) deep.

Q: If I Have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Is Surgery My Only Option?

A: If diagnosed early, wearing wrist splints, taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroid injections may help relieve pain in the short term. If your condition does not respond to these treatment options, surgery is usually the only other alternative. However, open carpal tunnel surgery which involves a large incision and a 6 to 8-week recovery period isn’t the only solution.

I’m a long-time classical music & opera fan, so this news is of interest to me and I thought I’d post about it here.

Yesterday, the Royal Opera House suspended the star of its latest tour, the Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, for alleged sexual misconduct - he groped a member of the chorus during curtain call, in full view of the audience, despite people around him telling him to stop. He is being suspended and replaced, pending results from an independent investigation.

My first thought was: good on the ROH for taking these kinds of allegations seriously. Stars shouldn’t be allowed to get away with unprofessional behaviour just because they can sell a full house. It’s like in professional sports like football, when a player gets carded s/he has to miss the next match/season, and if the offence is serious enough they’d be under a lot of pressure to resign. Honestly that should be the standard everywhere.

Although, I can’t help but wonder if the ROH was so ready to treat this seriously this time round, because: (1) he is not that big of a star so perhaps considering the financial aspects they could still afford to let him go, and (2) they saw how the Met Opera was criticised for not taking things seriously enough and want to avoid the same negative publicity.

Last year the Met had a bitter fallout with conductor James Levine, who basically engineered a bunch of ‘casting couch’-like situations over the years where he behaved inappropriately with several teenage boys in exchange for advancing their careers. More recently, they asked tenor Placido Domingo to resign, after multiple women have accused him of sexual harassment on the job.

I have personally encountered these kinds of unwelcome sexual come-ons from older men, they happen often enough that I can’t chalk them up to bad luck/rare occurrences anymore, so I don’t have a hard time imagining these things could happen. But thankfully none of these people have any kind of authority over me, and most of the time I could simply distance myself and get on with my life.

But in the case of the Met staffers - the make-up artists, singers, stagehands, etc. - this harassment was part of their professional lives. It makes me angry that not only did Domingo manage to get away with this kind of behaviour for decades, but as he rose to fame and became more and more indispensable to the theatre companies, it’s his victims who had to make concessions. They could either put up with it for the sake of securing their jobs, or reschedule/take sick leave/whatever to avoid working with him, sometimes even forgoing & jeopardising their own career opportunities just to protect themselves when they have done nothing wrong. 

This quote from The Guardian from a soprano who was harassed by him says it all: “What woman would ever want him to grab their breast? And it hurt,” she said. “Then I had to go on stage and act like I was in love with him.”

Because the sad truth for her and for most of us, is that we need our jobs more than our jobs need us, and oftentimes when shit happens we can only tough it out. Meanwhile the Met tried to drag out some ‘innocent until proven guilty’ shtick for as long as they could afford to, because profit$$$.

Anyway, good riddance to these lowlifes. It honestly boggles my mind how someone like Domingo can sing all the righteous heroic roles that he has (like, basically all his Puccini characters?!!), and still turn out to be such a disappointing human being. It’s starting to make me question all his interpretations of all this stuff now.
