You guys have @tumblingxelian to thank for this post as it seems they want more thoughts on Blake not managing to catch Ruby. So if Blake missed Ruby in volume 8...she'd want to go feral on Neo since it's more her fault but as we know...Neo fell with Ruby. So that leaves Cinder. And we all know Blake is gonna be crying and screaming. Even more feral than when Yang fell cause she just lost her brand new sister too. Now this does not mean I think she'd win. Of course not. Cinder is a maiden. But I think she might get a few actual hits in before falling. And I also think it means she'd be much more protective of Ruby in volume 9. Talk about splitting attention. Girl would be flipping back and forth between Ruby and Yang like a damn light switch. Might put more pressure on Ruby to open up and talk. We all know she won't but hey. Just means Blake is even more devastated when Ruby tells her to shut up and then leaves. But also means the hug is ten times better when Ruby comes back and kicks the cats ass.

Remember they are the same but different-
Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee: Foils Reflecting Shared Yet Divergent Paths
Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee, central characters in RWBY, are crafted as foils—characters who contrast to highlight each other’s traits—yet share fundamental similarities that underscore their parallel journeys. Both are driven by a desire to protect and redeem, but their backgrounds, personalities, and approaches create a dynamic interplay of similarity and difference. Below, we explore how Ruby and Weiss are "the same but different," focusing on their family dynamics, social struggles, combat challenges, relationships with older sisters, opposition to Cinder Fall, mental health struggles, and additional shared traits drawn from their character arcs: leadership burdens, pursuit of heroic ideals, and evolving combat versatility.
1. Distant Fathers and Primary Caregivers
Both Ruby and Weiss grow up with emotionally or physically distant fathers. Ruby’s father, Taiyang Xiao Long, is downplayed in the narrative; Yang reveals she primarily raised Ruby after their mother’s death, suggesting Taiyang’s limited emotional presence. Similarly, Weiss’s father, Jacques Schnee, is abusive and controlling, using his children as tools for his ambitions rather than nurturing them. While Taiyang’s distance is benign neglect and Jacques’ is actively harmful, both leave Ruby and Weiss reliant on others—Yang for Ruby, and Winter or herself for Weiss—for emotional support, highlighting their shared experience of paternal absence but with different emotional impacts.
2. Absent Mothers
The absence of their mothers profoundly shapes Ruby and Weiss. Ruby’s mother, Summer Rose, is deceased, leaving a memorial stone and a legacy Ruby strives to emulate. Weiss’s mother, Willow Schnee, is alive but emotionally unavailable, descending into alcoholism after Jacques’ betrayal. Both mothers are "missing" in practical terms, driving Ruby and Weiss to seek purpose in their absence. Ruby idealizes Summer’s heroism, aspiring to be a Huntress like her, while Weiss seeks to redeem the Schnee legacy tarnished by her parents’ failures. Their shared maternal void fuels their determination but manifests differently: Ruby’s optimism versus Weiss’s initial cynicism.
3. Friendless Beginnings and Social Struggles
Ruby and Weiss start RWBY with friendless backgrounds, struggling to connect socially. Ruby’s introduction shows her isolated, wearing headphones and lacking social skills, botching early conversations at Beacon. Weiss, raised in a lonely, abusive household, hides her vulnerability behind arrogance, alienating peers with her haughty demeanor. Both are initially terrible at making friends, but their approaches differ: Ruby’s awkward enthusiasm contrasts with Weiss’s cold superiority. Over time, their shared journey in Team RWBY helps them overcome these barriers, with Ruby becoming a charismatic leader and Weiss a compassionate teammate, reflecting their parallel growth from isolation to connection.
4. Combat Challenges and Growth
Despite their prodigious talents, both Ruby and Weiss struggle in combat early on, requiring time to secure solid victories. Ruby, a scythe-wielding prodigy, is admitted to Beacon two years early but is crippled without Crescent Rose, as seen in her capture at Mountain Glenn. Her overspecialization in scythe combat and impulsiveness lead to mixed success. Weiss, with her versatile Semblance and Dust-enhanced rapier, Myrtenaster, is a Glass Cannon, often knocked out in early fights due to low durability. Both face significant losses—Ruby fails to save Pyrrha and Penny, while Weiss loses battles against stronger opponents like Vernal. However, their growth diverges: Ruby’s tactical leadership shines in team strategies, while Weiss masters summoning and elemental versatility, showcasing their shared need to overcome initial weaknesses but through distinct combat styles.
5. Older Sisters as Role Models
Ruby and Weiss idolize their older sisters, Yang Xiao Long and Winter Schnee, who serve as foils to each other. Yang’s fiery, protective nature contrasts with Winter’s icy, disciplined demeanor, mirroring the fire-and-ice thematic divide. Ruby looks up to Yang’s strength and confidence, relying on her as a surrogate parent, while Weiss admires Winter’s independence and strength, seeking to emulate her escape from Jacques’ control. Both sisters guide their younger siblings toward resilience, but Yang’s warmth encourages Ruby’s optimism, while Winter’s strictness shapes Weiss’s discipline, highlighting how Ruby and Weiss draw similar inspiration from contrasting role models.
6. Foils to Cinder Fall
Ruby and Weiss both oppose Cinder Fall, reflecting her traits in inverted or exaggerated ways. Ruby, with her red motif and silver eyes, embodies purity and selflessness, the antithesis of Cinder’s red-themed ambition and sadistic ego. Ruby’s desire to protect contrasts with Cinder’s destructive pursuit of power. Weiss, at her worst, mirrors Cinder’s arrogance and sense of entitlement, but seeks redemption for her family’s wrongs, unlike Cinder’s self-serving vengeance. Both Ruby and Weiss challenge Cinder’s worldview—Ruby through moral opposition, Weiss through rejecting a path she could have taken—illustrating their shared role as her ideological counters but with distinct motivations.
7. Mental Health Struggles
Both Ruby and Weiss grapple with significant mental health issues stemming from their responsibilities and traumas. Ruby’s idealism buckles under the weight of leadership, culminating in PTSD and suicidal ideation in Volume 9, as she feels she only makes things worse. Weiss, shaped by an abusive upbringing, hides loneliness and insecurity behind a frosty facade, struggling with self-worth until she reclaims her identity. Their mental struggles manifest differently—Ruby’s despair is overt, Weiss’s is internalized—but both stem from the pressure to be perfect and the fear of failure, underscoring their shared vulnerability beneath contrasting exteriors.
8. Burdens of Leadership
Ruby and Weiss both face the heavy responsibilities of leadership, grappling with the pressure to inspire and guide others. Ruby is appointed leader of Team RWBY by Ozpin, who warns her that leadership requires constant excellence to earn respect. Her burden peaks in Volume 9, where the weight of her choices drives her to despair. Weiss, initially envious of Ruby’s role, seeks leadership to prove her worth but learns from Professor Port to prioritize being a supportive teammate. Both struggle with the Chains of Commanding—Ruby as the appointed leader, Weiss as a potential leader who learns to support—but their approaches differ: Ruby inspires through optimism, while Weiss grows into a nurturing Team Mom, reflecting their shared leadership challenges but divergent styles.
9. Pursuit of Heroic Ideals
Both Ruby and Weiss are driven by a desire to embody heroic ideals, inspired by fairy tales and family legacies. Ruby dreams of being a fairy-tale hero like her mother, Summer, aiming to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Weiss seeks to restore the honorable legacy of the Schnee Dust Company, inspired by her grandfather’s values and her sister Winter’s independence. Both face disillusionment—Ruby learns the real world isn’t a fairy tale, and Weiss confronts her family’s moral failings—but persist in their quests. Ruby’s idealism pushes her to inspire others, while Weiss’s determination drives her to reform her family’s name, highlighting their shared heroic aspirations expressed through personal versus familial lenses.
10. Evolving Combat Versatility
Ruby and Weiss share a journey of overcoming initial combat limitations to become more versatile fighters. Ruby’s reliance on Crescent Rose leaves her vulnerable without it, as seen in Volume 5 when Ozpin forces her to train in hand-to-hand combat. Weiss, initially overdependent on her Semblance and Dust, struggles with summoning until Volume 5, where she masters it but learns not to rely solely on it after nearly dying at Haven. Both start with specialized skills—Ruby’s scythe mastery, Weiss’s Dust-enhanced glyphs—but grow to address their weaknesses. Ruby gains basic unarmed skills, while Weiss balances summoning with direct combat, reflecting their shared need to broaden their fighting capabilities but through different technical paths.
Conclusion
Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee are masterfully crafted foils, sharing core experiences—distant fathers, absent mothers, social isolation, combat struggles, admired sisters, opposition to Cinder, mental health challenges, leadership burdens, heroic ideals, and evolving versatility—yet expressing them through contrasting lenses. Ruby’s impulsive optimism and red-rose symbolism clash with Weiss’s calculated discipline and snow-white motif, but their parallel journeys toward self-acceptance and heroism reveal they are two sides of the same coin, striving to protect and redeem in a world that tests their resolve.

RWBY Theory: Glyphs, Hallucinations, and Ancient Magic Connections
This theory explores the potential links between Semblances, Magic, and the characters Weiss Schnee, Emerald Sustrai, and Neopolitan (Neo) in RWBY. It suggests that their unique abilities—Glyphs, Hallucinations, and Overactive Imagination—may have deeper connections to Remnant’s ancient Magic, possibly hinting at their ties to the world’s forgotten past.
Magic in Remnant: A Brief Overview
Magic is a mysterious and ancient power that shaped Remnant’s creation. The Gods of Light and Darkness used Magic to form the world, and the God of Darkness granted the original Humanity the ability to wield it. After Humanity’s rebellion, the God of Darkness purged the planet, leaving no trace of Magic for the second era of Humanity. Only a few individuals retain access to this power:
Salem: As an original Human cursed with immortality, Salem wields powerful Magic, including energy blasts, telekinesis, flight, superhuman strength, clairvoyance, and the ability to manipulate shadows or summon cyclones. Her immortality allows her to regenerate from any injury, even complete destruction, though regeneration time varies.
Ozma/Ozpin/Oscar: Ozma, another original Human, possessed vast magical abilities, such as energy blasts, flight, and creating pocket dimensions (e.g., the Vaults). His reincarnations, including Ozpin and Oscar, retain some Magic, though it has dwindled due to creating the Maidens and repeated reincarnations. They can conjure energy barriers and fire energy beams.
Maidens and Branwen Siblings: Ozma used his Magic to create the Maidens and grant Qrow and Raven Branwen the ability to shapeshift into corvids, showing his ability to bestow magical traits.
Eddy Rivas confirmed in a Reddit AMA that Semblances and Magic are linked, though the exact nature of this connection remains unclear. This theory posits that certain Semblances, particularly those of Weiss, Emerald, and Neo, may reflect traces of ancient Magic.
Weiss Schnee’s Glyphs: A Magical Semblance
Glyphs, the hereditary Semblance of the Schnee family, are unique in their versatility and magical aesthetic. Unlike most Semblances, which are individualistic, Glyphs are passed down through the Schnee bloodline, suggesting a deeper, possibly magical origin. The Semblance manifests as snowflake-shaped symbols with various effects:
Propulsion: Glyphs can accelerate objects or people through the air or across surfaces, as seen in Players and Pieces.
Barriers: They can form solid shields, as Weiss did against the Boarbatusk in The Badge and The Burden, Pt.2.
Summoning: Weiss and Winter can summon avatars of defeated foes, such as the Arma Gigas or Queen Lancer.
Time Dilation: When combined with Lightning Dust, Glyphs can speed up actions, as seen when Weiss enhanced Blake’s speed in Painting the Town....
Power Source: In the RWBY x Justice League comic, Weiss’ Glyphs powered Victor Stone’s cybernetic parts, suggesting they generate centrifugal energy.
The Glyphs’ snowflake design mirrors the Schnee family symbol, which resembles Salem’s emblem, hinting at a symbolic or historical connection. Winter Schnee describes Glyphs as a “muscle” that grows stronger with practice, but their hereditary nature and magical aesthetic set them apart from typical Semblances. Their ability to manipulate time, summon avatars, and interact with Dust in unique ways suggests a closer tie to Magic than most Semblances.
Emerald Sustrai’s Hallucinations: A Mind-Bending Power
Emerald’s Semblance, Hallucinations, allows her to alter sensory information in a target’s mind, creating vivid illusions that only the target perceives. Unlike Neo’s illusions, which are visible to everyone, Emerald’s hallucinations are individualized. Key aspects include:
Versatility: Emerald can make targets see or hear things that aren’t there, as seen when she made Amber see an invisible attacker in Beginning of the End. She can also affect multiple targets, though this initially caused headaches.
Evolution: By Volume 8, Emerald’s Semblance has grown stronger. She can affect at least three people without strain (Witch), evade Grimm detection (War), and even influence Salem, a being of ancient Magic. She can also sense minds within a certain radius.
Weaknesses: Maintaining hallucinations requires concentration and Aura, limiting Emerald’s mobility. Subtle mistakes, like stirring dust while invisible, can break the illusion (Beginning of the End). Her Semblance is less effective against advanced cybernetic sensors, like Penny’s heat vision.
Non-Biological Targets: Emerald’s hallucinations work on synthetic beings (e.g., Penny) and cybernetic enhancements (e.g., Maria’s prosthetic eyes), though with limitations.
Emerald’s glowing red eyes, which don’t match her green hair, are notable. Many RWBY characters have eyes matching their hair, but Emerald’s solid red eyes glow when using her Semblance, suggesting a connection to something otherworldly. Her ability to affect Grimm and Salem, beings tied to ancient Magic, further supports this. Her lack of family or home adds mystery, possibly implying an origin linked to Remnant’s magical past.
Neopolitan’s Overactive Imagination: Illusions Evolving Beyond Limits
Neo’s Semblance, Overactive Imagination, creates physical illusions visible to everyone, which shatter like glass when broken. Her Semblance has evolved significantly, particularly after her fall into the Ever After, suggesting a connection to ancient forces. Key features include:
Basic Illusions: Neo can disguise herself or objects, as seen when she altered her appearance in Round One or disguised an airship in Our Way. Her illusions can mimic others’ appearances, voices, and expressions, as when she impersonated Nora in The Enemy of Trust.
Camouflage and Teleportation: Neo can blend into surroundings (Witch) or fake teleportation (No Brakes), enhancing her combat deception.
Evolution in the Ever After: After landing in the Abandoned Acre, Neo’s Semblance gained the ability to create tangible, semi-autonomous clones of herself or others (Rude, Red, and Royal). These clones can replicate abilities, weapons, and voices, as seen with Jabberwalker clones (The Parfait Predicament) and recreations of Penny, Pyrrha, and others (Tea Amidst Terrible Trouble).
Complex Constructs: Neo can create entire environments, like the Vanille Manor tea room, complete with functional furniture and weapons (Tea Amidst Terrible Trouble). Her clones can bleed and mimic personalities, blurring the line between illusion and reality.
Possession by the Curious Cat: When the Curious Cat possessed Neo, it used her Semblance with equal mastery, creating distorted Ruby clones and transforming Neo’s body (A Tale Involving a Tree).
Psychological Projection: Neo can project her psyche through clones, as seen when her Roman clone voiced her subconscious thoughts (Of Solitude and Self).
Neo’s changing eye colors (pink, brown, green) and her Dissociative Identity Disorder-like childhood manifestation of “Neopolitan” as a separate entity suggest an unstable, possibly magical origin. The Abandoned Acre, described as an experimental ground of the Gods, amplified her Semblance, implying Neo’s power may be tied to ancient Magic. Her ability to create life-like clones with abilities and personalities pushes her Semblance beyond typical limits, resembling magical feats.
Theory: Connections to Ancient Magic
The Semblances of Weiss, Emerald, and Neo share traits that suggest a link to Remnant’s ancient Magic:
Magical Aesthetics: Glyphs have a mystical snowflake design, Hallucinations affect even magical beings like Salem, and Overactive Imagination creates near-real constructs, all resembling magical effects.
Unusual Origins: Weiss’ hereditary Semblance, Emerald’s mysterious background, and Neo’s evolution in the Gods’ experimental ground hint at connections to Remnant’s magical past.
Eye Symbolism: Emerald’s glowing red eyes and Neo’s shifting eye colors align with RWBY’s pattern of unusual eyes indicating powerful or magical traits (e.g., Yang’s purple eyes tied to Raven’s spacetime-breaking Semblance and Maiden powers).
Versatility and Evolution: All three Semblances are unusually versatile and have evolved beyond typical limits, suggesting they tap into a deeper power source, possibly Magic.
Hypotheses
Weiss’ Glyphs: The Schnee family’s Semblance may descend from a magical bloodline or an ancient ritual tied to the Gods, explaining its hereditary nature and magical versatility. The snowflake symbol’s similarity to Salem’s emblem could indicate a historical connection.
Emerald’s Hallucinations: Emerald’s ability to affect Grimm, Salem, and synthetic beings suggests her Semblance may derive from a magical anomaly, possibly tied to her unknown origins or exposure to a magical artifact.
Neo’s Overactive Imagination: Neo’s Semblance evolution in the Ever After, a place linked to the Gods, implies her power may have been amplified by ancient Magic. Her childhood manifestation of “Neopolitan” as a separate entity could indicate a magical or supernatural origin.
Supporting Evidence
Eddy Rivas’ confirmation of a Semblance-Magic link.
The magical aesthetics and effects of Glyphs, Hallucinations, and Overactive Imagination.
The unique traits of Weiss, Emerald, and Neo (hereditary Semblance, glowing eyes, shifting eye colors, and Dissociative Identity Disorder-like symptoms).
The Abandoned Acre’s role in evolving Neo’s Semblance, tying it to the Gods’ influence.
Conclusion
Weiss’ Glyphs, Emerald’s Hallucinations, and Neo’s Overactive Imagination stand out as Semblances with potential ties to Remnant’s ancient Magic. Their versatility, magical aesthetics, and connections to unusual origins or divine influences suggest they may be remnants of a forgotten magical era. Further exploration of their backgrounds and the nature of Semblances could reveal how these powers bridge the gap between Aura and the lost art of Magic, deepening our understanding of RWBY’s world. (Raven and Ruby are other examples as well. ) Basically some are able to be much more connected to old magic than others
