Did somebody say Meryway PJO AU?

Introducing: Ruby Summers and the Olympians!

Ruby is the protagonist, Daughter of Posideon and Heroine of the Great Prophecy. Since she never got sent to Meryway in this AU, school wasn't exactly great for her and she got bullied a lot. She's still bright and bubbly and optimistic, it's just despite what she's been through in this AU. She doesn't like Posideon for what he did to her Mother. "you are Posideon's Daughter." "'I am Lucy Summers Daughter."

Edith is the Daughter of Artemis and deurotagonist. She's also been bullied pre coming to Camp Half-Blood, so she acts pretty similar to Meryway Edith. She's Snarky and sometimes not the nicest, but she has a good heart. She quickly befriends Ruby when they meet, and their attached at the hip for the rest of the series.

Reyna is the Daughter of Hades. She initially has a somewhat Rivalry with Ruby since they're both daughters of one of the Big Three, but it's mostly one sided since, again, Ruby doesn't like Posideon. Reyna gets over it and has an arc where she realises that Hades doesn't care about her and learns to do stuff for herself instead of for his attention.

Viva's the daughter of Aphrodite. She gets annoyed when people assume that her Cabin in the 'weak one', Aphrodite is a war goddess guys. She isn't really the 'Piper' of this AU since she loves being feminine but she does end up taking over as head of the cabin in the HOO equivalent of this AU. She's protective of the others in the cabin and can and will fight you if you claim one of her siblings either isn't pretty enough to be in the Cabin or say they're weak or stupid because they're an Aphrodite kid.

Mary is a Daughter of Ares, but she's notably weirdly chill. Like, WAY to calm most of the time. She can fight dirty and bloody but she will be SILENT throughout it. Sometimes she creeps the other campers out (they still love her though)

Nadia is a Hermes Kid. she's head of the Cabin despite being 12, and she looks out for her siblings as well as most others in the camp. She's pretty friendly but isn't afraid to fight. As a small nod to canon PJO, I think she mentions at some point having a brother (Luke) who turned out to be awful and it kind of really messed up the cabin.

Victoria is a daughter of Demeter. She literally couldn't be any other God's kid. She's one of the strongest Demigods and she uses that power for good. Deeply connected to nature and plant life. She's head of her cabin and a real sister (both younger AND older) to the other kids there. She's deeply respected and liked in the camp too.

Isabella is the daughter of Athena. She's a clever girl, witty as can be - and it turns out she uses that wit as a form of manipulation. She's turns out to be the main antagonist of the AU (she's also the main antagonist of Meryway but I'll explain her lore for that later!) and plans to overthrow the Gods. She's not exactly Luke since she's also 12/13 and NOT a groomer/pedo, but she has similar goals to him and a lot of people's trust are broken and hurt when her true nature gets revealed.

Hannah is an Apollo kid. She's still really shy and tends to avoid leading the sing alongs unlike the other Apollo kids. She still has DID and Emi as an alter, the only difference is that she can't shape shift here. She trusted Isabella a lot, so it's safe to say she isn't doing great when Isabella is revealed to be a Bad person.

Time for another au I got cooking

So hear me out. A universe, where the members of RWBY and JNPR, were adopted by the arcs for one reason or another.

Now I’ve seen ren and Nora being adopted by jaune’s family before beacon, but this time it’s all of them so let’s do the set up

Blake: during one of the rallies for the peaceful white fang an attack against the Faunus happened. Which was orchestrated by sienna to bend more Faunus to her side of thinking by making it seem as though humans are violent, but before she acted ghira wanted his daughter to be close to him up front

With the attack Blake gets separated and really lost (she’s about 3-4) and wonders into the forest and is attacked by grim only for papa arc to come to the rescue

Now this will have some changes with ghira’s attitude towards sienna and he’d be a bit more of a protective member and would probably fight more when sienna tries to take over the white fang would most likely start a more peaceful group after her takeover

But Blake would be raised by Arcs

Yang and Ruby: I’d like to think that during the mission wears summer goes missing tai, decides a tagalong and as a result, the only person that could take care of Ruby and Yang was Qrow which he was woefully under prepared for, but he was good friends with the Arcs and managed to give Ruby and Yang a good home

Ren and Nora: just look an any fan fic where this happens they get found after their home is destroyed

Weiss: for this all I can see is failed kidnapping planned by her father

Picture this, Whitley was just born, winter was too publicly known so what does Jacque try to do. Kill the unnecessary child but the plan is botched by mama arc a really old and dear friend of willow, who asked the arc matriarch for help after finding out the plan of her husband now this essentially is where Willow would start drinking unlike normally with during Weise’s birthday she found out just how evil her husband is and essentially ask if they can look after her daughter

Pyrrha: now this is more difficult to do and would require hmmm a more further meddling and adding of oc characters

In some fics Pyrrha is part of a family with Olympian names (names of the Greek and Roman gods) and she is treated quite poorly given her mother is a mistress. So in this case her mother passes and her father kicks her to the curb but her uncle Hephaestus takes her To the arc’s a family he knows would be able to help and the rest is history

Out of sheer boredom and temporary loss of impulse control, Sally Jackson lists the God of the Underworld, Hades, as her daughter's godfather. She fully expected nothing to come of it. Then, a package arrived at her door.

Based off of the prompt: Your parents listed Hades as your godfather as a joke, That would not be an issue if it were not for the 3-headed puppy delivered to your doorstep by Persephone and Hades themselves, planning to protect you from the Olympian's shenanigans due to Zeus' bulldickery

Chapter One

The sun hangs high, casting an inviting warmth across New York City, as white fluffy clouds drift slowly as a glacier across a vast sheet of pastel blue. A spring breeze whips around the diverse city, ruffling hair and skirts, carrying the captivating scent of freshly bloomed flowers, cut grass, and street food. Car horns blare, drivers bicker over who has the right of way, and tourists trek around the city to see the only two tourist attractions they know.

At eight thirty that morning, a glossy yellow school bus, its windows down and students' disorderly conversations echoing down the street, came to a stop in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

With a pull of a lever, the doors opened inward. Students’ leapt out of their seats and shuffled out onto the sidewalk in a single file line, dispersing and grouping up with their friends. Lively laughter and friendly cursing rang out, several students voicing their displeasure at having to spend the day at a museum. A few bragged about the luxurious vacations awaiting them at the end of the school year, and others quietly mentioned the urge to pay someone to buy them beer over the summer. “Just to see what it tastes like,” they said in a joking manner, in case a teacher overheard.

A loud “E' una vera stronza!” erupted from the bus, followed by more Italian words in what people could only assume was a scolding.

Four students got off the bus – the four outcasts of Yancy Academy.

Bianca Di Angelo-Jackson: A kind girl in a band of misfits, she is the oldest of the four and a Yancy Academy graduate, having left as a straight A valedictorian. Her silky black hair was tied back in a tight braid and her olive skin shimmered in the sunlight like sand at a tropical beach. The only reason she was on this trip was as a personal favor to the teachers, who expressed their condolences to her for having siblings like Nico and Adrestia.

Nico Di Angelo-Jackson: A Mythomagic fanatic with a look that could kill, Bianca’s little brother was the definition of a closeted emo. His black hair was always messy, like he refused to brush it after getting out of bed, and his hands were as cold as ice. It was suspected that his wardrobe consisted entirely of black clothing because it was the only color anyone saw him wear, along with his aviator’s jacket and steel-toed boots. Unlike the other two, he sent chills down everyone’s spine with his blank stare and the madman glint in his brown eyes.

Adrestia Jackson: With jet-black hair as wild and untamed as her personality, the six foot tall skater girl was a powerhouse and the definition of sass. In the midday sun, her tanned skin glittered like polished bronze and her sea-green eyes blazed with defiance, firm muscles embellishing her lithe form. Several rumors about her run-ins with the law and past expulsions had circulated around the school since the start of the year, giving her a troubled kid reputation. Her friends call her Addie or ‘Desti.

Grover Underwood: A new addition to the group, he is not as intimidating. He was a scrawny boy with a wispy beard and curly brown hair, and he had a muscular disease in his legs. He’d cry whenever he got frustrated and walked funny. Everyone believed he only joined their group for protection.

Adorning Bianca, Nico, and Adrestia’s neck, its silver sheen glinting, was a skull pendant. It was a creepy piece of jewelry, too realistic looking for anyone’s liking, and the rubies in the eye sockets made people feel it was truly looking at them. As far as everyone knew, they never took it off their necks.

Nico aggressively points to Adrestia, saying more words in Italian that no one could understand, gesturing for her to get closer while gesturing to Bianca, as if he was asking her to step in or something. The girl shakes her head as she replies in Greek – another language no one could understand – and raises her hands in surrender, taking a step back. Grover steps forward, nervously putting his hand on Nico’s shoulder, telling him something in Greek. The people who stopped to watch and listen wondered how one could know what the other was saying, because Italian and Greek were vastly different grammar wise. Nico visibly relaxes at Grover’s words, reluctantly relenting from whatever he couldn’t let go.

Mr. Brunner, the Latin teacher, rides up in his motorized wheelchair. He stops and says, “May I ask what has upset you so much, Mr. Di Angelo? I wouldn’t want whatever is bothering you to affect this trip.”

“It’s nothing,” Nico grumbles, stuffing his hands into his jacket.

Mr. Brunner turns to Bianca with a questioning look.

“He’s angry he can’t get revenge on Nancy,” she explains.

Nico sends her a glare, speaking in a hushed voice through gritted teeth. “Bianca!”

“And why exactly does he want to get revenge on Nancy?”

“She threw pieces of her peanut butter and ketchup sandwich at me the entire bus ride,” says Grover sheepishly.

Nico sneers in disgust, muttering, “Che schifo.”

“I would’ve decked Nancy,” Adrestia butts in, leaning against the bus and crossing her arms over her chest, “if I wasn’t on probation.”

“Well, I’m glad that stopped you,” Mr. Brunner says, giving her a stern look. “I wouldn’t want that one mistake to threaten your future, Ms. Jackson. I expect great things from you.”

Adrestia raises a brow at his words, a flicker of disbelief appearing on her neutral expression. When Mr. Brunner told her that, or something close to that, she wanted to be angry. Not only did her dyslexia and ADHD let her never get anything above a C-, she was constantly in trouble with authority. She believed you shouldn’t expect great things from a person like her, and she wished he wouldn’t.

Mr. Brunner turns to Nico. “Mr. Di Angelo, I suggest you follow Ms. Jackson’s lead and avoid retaliating against Nancy. You may not get in as much trouble as your sister, but that doesn’t mean you should put your future at risk as well. Do you understand?”

Nico looks away, stubbornly avoiding his intense brown eyes that look as though they belong to someone who’s lived a thousand years.

“Do you understand, Mr. Di Angelo?” Mr. Brunner asks again, his voice firmer this time.

Nico growls. “Yes, I understand,” he answers, grinding the words out through clenched teeth.

Mr. Brunner glances at each of them, staring longer at Grover, before rolling away. The group watches him leave.

The moment he’s out of earshot, Adrestia comments, “He’s weird.”

“He’s not weird,” Bianca lightly chides. “He’s just trying to help you.”

“Why?” Nico questions, glancing at his older sister. His skeptical gaze returns to the middle-aged man in the wheelchair.

“Does it matter why? He’s one of the only teachers who actually doesn’t want to give up on you two.”

“Yeah, the other one’s Mrs. Dodds.” Irritation flashes across Adrestia’s face, a corner of her lip tugged into a sneer.

A throat clearing steals the group’s attention. They look up to lock eyes with their fifty-year-old math teacher, Mrs. Dodds, wearing her usual black leather jacket and strict expression, eyes boring into their souls.

“I think she heard you,” Nico whispers, leaning towards Adrestia.

“Ya think?” Adrestia’s voice is just as low, a chill running down her spine as Mrs. Dodds eyes narrow.

A small sound similar to a bleat escapes Grover’s lips. The trio looks at him, noting the pink coloring his light-brown cheeks. Grover clears his throat, hurriedly saying, “Mr. Brunner is calling for us. We should get going.”

A murmur of agreement rises between them as they join the others, ignoring the derisive stares they had more or less gotten used to. Bianca, Nico, and Adrestia had the looks and the personality to be one of the popular kids. The only thing stopping them was a number of things: Adrestia’s troubled history, Nico’s homosexuality, Bianca’s loyalty to her siblings, their poor background, and them not caring about popularity. It didn’t help that they had foreign roots. Their peers often mocked the way they spoke, purposely mispronouncing words with a terrible accent. Although, it was more tolerable than the stereotypes.

“What’s wrong with Mrs. Dodds?” Bianca asks in Italian, turning to her younger sister.

Adrestia shrugs, replying in Greek. “She’s too . . . harsh, I guess.”

“What? Is she abusive or something?”

“No, but,” Adrestia pauses, shaking her head as she sighs. “It feels like she hates me or something. She gives me the evil eye a lot.”

“She’d probably stop giving you the evil eye if you paid attention more,” said Grover in Greek.

“Maybe if she didn’t sound like the teachers from the military academies I went to, I would actually try to pay attention,” Adrestia retorts as they walk towards the museum with the rest of the group.

It was twelve thirty, and the students were outside having lunch. They sat on the steps of the museum, watching the Fifth Avenue foot traffic as they ate.

Bianca, Nico, Adrestia, and Grover sat off to the side, hoping anyone who passes by assumes they aren’t with the school filled with kids who can’t make it elsewhere. They ate their chicken alfredo with a side of Moussaka – their mother had kindly sent Grover vegan Mac ‘n Cheese – watching the teenage boys pelt pigeons with Lunchable crackers. Nico pats their arms, pointing at Nancy Bobofit attempting to sneakily steal something from a lady’s purse, only to be caught and berated by Mrs. Dodds.

“I don’t know why she needs to steal,” Grover remarks, his mouth full of Mac ‘n Cheese. “She’s rich, isn’t she?”

“She’s a kleptomaniac,” Bianca tells him with a sigh, her eyes on Nancy as she shakes her head in disappointment. “I don’t think she can help it.”

“Still,” Nico says, gulping down his food before continuing. “How can you be rich and feel like stealing?”

“The same way you can be poor and burn away money you don’t have,” Adrestia answers, watching Nancy be forced to apologize to the woman she tried to steal from, a corner of her mouth lifting into a satisfied smirk.

Dark clouds rumble overhead, thunder booming in the distance. Swirling her fork in her pasta, Adrestia asks, “Have any of you noticed how weird the weather has been lately?”

The others look up, watching as the clouds light up every few seconds and steadily block out the sky. Since Christmas, New York State has been experiencing a wide variety of weather. Flooding, snow storms so big they take down phone lines, and wildfires from lightning strikes. It wouldn’t be so crazy if it wasn’t happening in one place, but it was. Strangely, no one seemed to notice.

Bianca turns to them. “Last week, I was walking across campus, heading to the cafe for some lunch, when, out of nowhere, lightning hit the ground right in front of me. There were, like, zero clouds in the sky – except maybe for a tiny one – and it just appeared. It was so close, I could swear it was aiming for me.”

“Maybe Moses came back,” Adrestia quips, her smirk turning to amusement.

“Yeah,” Nico chuckles. “Or maybe God just had enough of seeing your ugly face.”

Their chuckles turn to laughter as they take light jabs at each other, almost choking on their food. It had been such a stressful time for them the last several months that it felt nice to laugh for once.

“Or a more likely scenario,” came an annoying voice, “is that God wants to punish you losers for existing.”

Nancy Bobofit and her friends had appeared in front of them, hell-bent on getting some form of entertainment.

As always, Adrestia’s wit didn’t falter. “Must you speak?” she asks, a brow raised. “You shouldn’t overwork that one brain cell of yours.”

Nancy’s friends hide their sniggers behind their hands, their leader’s confident expression faltering slightly. “Good one, ‘Desti,” Nico mutters with a grin.

Nancy turned on him. “Shut up, fag!” she growls. Bianca’s face drops to barely concealed anger; she never liked it when people oppress her brother for being gay.

“Oh, fag,” Nico mocks, a hint of amusement in his voice. “How original. You bully as well as you steal.”

Her face starts to turn red from frustration.

“You know, Nancy,” Grover starts, feeling a bit brave. “Instead of worrying about how you look, I think you should worry more about your terrible personality.”

Nancy’s friends couldn’t control their laughter anymore. The red-faced and curly haired girl pivots towards Grover, and she screams, raising her hand, “Shut up, you crippled freak!” Nancy’s arm rears back, stiff as it propels forward, aiming for his cheek and –

Fear contorts her face, eyebrows rising to her forehead as Adrestia towered over her. The taller girl’s expression is as dark and threatening as a storm above a violent sea, her grip on Nancy’s wrist painfully tight. A slight whimper leaves Nancy’s lips as a grin grows on Adrestia’s face, the kind where a person is trying to pass off as friendly but the murderous glint in their eye gives them away. Her voice is a whisper, sickly sweet as she speaks.

“Careful, Nancy. I’m not afraid of jail.”

She gulps down a breath. “I-I’ll tell on you.”

“Go ahead. Mrs. Dodds and Mr. Brunner can’t make it here fast enough to save you.”

Nancy glances at Bianca, Nico, and Grover, silently begging them for help. However, the three offered no sympathy. The Di Angelo siblings' brown eyes appeared demonic under the blackening skies, the air dropping to below freezing around them. She could swear the smallest bits of frost popped up at their feet.

“Don’t poke the bear if you know you’re not going to survive its attack,” Bianca advises, giving Adrestia a nod that made her let go of Nancy’s wrist and plop down beside Grover.

Nancy pulls her wrist to her chest, checking to see if it was damaged. “Yeah, well, at least I have my family’s last name,” Nancy retorted, determined to come out on top.

“Your family is stuck with you,” Nico points out bluntly. “Sally chose us.”

Nancy scoffs with a roll of her eyes. She turns, muttering, “I wonder how many men that bitch serviced this week just to pay your tuition.”

That did it.

Much like Sandy Cheeks after Spongebob and Patrick insulted Texas, Bianca, Nico, and Adrestia did not react kindly to their mother being insulted. If it wasn’t for the Di Angelo siblings’ birth father paying child support, Sally would’ve worked herself dead to give them a good life.

Adrestia abruptly stands, towering over the kleptomaniac girl once more, a blinding, protective rage emanating from her. It was clear and overwhelming, like an enemy pounding at the door or a tsunami drawing closer to the shore. Nancy wanted to stand her ground. She tried to act like she could take on Adrestia. However, she’ll find that more challenging than she expected.

In a matter of three, confusing seconds, Nancy finds herself soaking wet in the fountain, spluttering as she sits up.

“Adrestia pushed me!” She cried, pointing at Adrestia.

A crowd gathered. They glanced from the fountain, to Nancy, to Adrestia with a mixture of shock and bewilderment. “Did you see –” they whispered.

“– the water –”

“– like it grabbed her –”

Adrestia turns to her siblings, who share her confusion. They couldn’t believe what she had done, or what she hadn’t done. They could all swear the water had, indeed, jumped out and pulled Nancy into the fountain, but it had happened so fast they assumed they were imagining it.

None of them noticed the realization washing over Grover, or the fear that replaced it when he looked at Mrs Dodds, who’s eyes glowed as she lifted a finger to her lips.

The chasm opened.

And she fell. The darkness seemed to consume everything. As if the sunlight was drained from the world. Everything had gone cold. It seemed like moonshine, but not the cold fall of winter. A million stars shone and inside, she knew. Wherever she had fallen now, the sun never rose. There was only ever twilight.

This place, she had only ever heard about it from her mother. This was where rivers of darkness flowed. Hope was found, but only when looked for. Echoes were eternal. Souls lived and rested forever. The living told stories about this realm. It all came back to her now.

She got up and looked around. A dark fortress loomed over her head. It was made out of shadows. Looking at it, either she was getting delirious from her fall, or the castle itself wavered. A black stream flowed close by. It seemed to be wailing in agony, consumed with tortured beings.

The meadow had the strangest colours she had ever seen. And she would know, being the goddess of flowers, the fair animals and summers. The flowers glowed fluorescent colours, colours she had never seen before. The pinks and yellows and reds and purples shone with an eerie radiance. This place was unheard of, even by the nymphs and naiads above.

She bent down to smell one of the roses, which was oddly black and red, something that had dropped out of an artist’s canvas. It smelled of nostalgia. This was strange, she thought. She had only ever liked the jasmines, but this new scent was oddly enchanting. She picked up another. This one was neon yellow. The smell of sitting by a fireplace in a brittle winter wafted out. The next flowers all felt like something. The smell was alive in her nose...bringing back memories of times spent with her aunt Hestia, near the eternal coals…

What was this place exactly?

She decided to venture out towards the castle. There were no doors to it. She saw a cute little puppy in the antechamber.

She recalled his name from the legends...wasn’t he supposed to be big and ferocious? Devour the lives of the tarnished and guilty souls?

He seemed pretty harmless to her.

“Here, spot!” she called out to him, offering an apple she had just summoned.

Cerebos stood there, looking at her, with all six eyes.

“Seriously, lady?” He seemed to be saying…”You’ll feed my three mouths with one apple?”

Right.

She summoned another two and spot approached her and ate them with great gusto. Didn’t Hades ever feed him? Spirits aren’t a healthy diet for dogs, everyone knew that!

Ahead, voices were booming with a great ominousness. They were the judges of Erebos. The ones who decided who got asphodel or elysium. That sounded very serious, especially for a goddess of fun springs and picnic summers.

Only one sound stood out. Coming from one of the dozens of hallways. An ethereal bird. A creature, an omen of potential. Plain and raw. The underworld was the realm of emotions and feelings, she realized. Where the past lived with you, caught up with you, decided you, and made you. And this bird sang about people with great capacity, capacity for good, and bad. She followed it.

What she found was not...not this. This was never supposed to be real. Never, in any dimension. Her greatest gardens were paltry compared to this.

Lush trees grew from the ground. Touching the ever starry skies. The bark was the richest brown, purer than even chocolate. Were the leaves really made from emeralds? The grass itself was scattered with tiny jewels, rounded like rocks near streams. A waterfall of pure, blue water flowed from high atop a cliff she couldn’t quite see. The flowers were even more abundant here, as if someone had taken the brightest colours from the spectrum and painted the flora with them. The stream flowing here, an offshoot of the waterfall, sang of hope and of paradise, of good times, headed towards elysium. She sat down on the grass, which was ever so mildly wet with dew and smelled of rain, but with an offness she couldn’t quite perceive. The bird she had heard earlier was actually part of a flock, who sang songs about happiness and life on Earth. In fact, they really did seem like distant images of the nature nymphs who followed her on Earth.

What was THIS place?

There was a grove of trees quite nearby, which had the most enchanting fruit she had seen so far. It was rounded like an apple, but she could tell it wasn’t one. It shone like a ruby and had a hard shell just like one. She walked towards it, entranced by it.

As she reached the fruit, she climbed on her tiptoes and plucked one. It was even more beautiful up close. She didn’t know how she knew, but she had to break the shell. She did. It was filled with hundreds of tiny seedlings, each of which were brilliant red. She plucked a few and put them in her mouth. Sweet…

“Who are you, goddess?” she heard a voice.

She turned around and saw a god. His aura was as strong as her mother’s. His hair was dark as the night, eyes golden like the olympians. His face had a distant feel to it, cheekbones sharp like the diamonds that lay around the water, something windswept, cheeks gaunt and pale but remarkably handsome. He was wearing a shirt and comfortable pajamas and a strange scarf that calmed her. He felt sweet, but containing lightning to rival zeus, gentle and just and unbelievably kind, but avenging those he cared about. He radiated the most loving and soothing persona she had ever felt. Hades...the lord of the underworld. God of the dead, of true justice and of paradise...

She realized how she looked. A tan cheery goddess who shone like the sun, even in erebos. Red juice dripped from her mouth onto her now ruined spring dress. Her wood sandals still stood, though. Her features were soft, her eyes pure and golden, her blond hair like a beacon under the stars of this garden. She was light here. The fruit in her hand still called.

“I am Persephone, goddess of summer and hope” and she thrust her hand out, offering the fruit to Hades, who accepted it, gladly, like one feels the sun in their eyes, and looks for warmth, in the underworld, where apollo never rides, but a goddess lights up his whole world.

And they shared the pomegranate.

A brief RedQueen take on Hades/Persephone

For @loudestdork in response to this incredible post. It’s your fault I’m still up at 6 am.

Also, I haven’t even proofread this, so please blame any errors or general crappiness in quality on either mental fatigue or sleepless mania. :)

Slowly Regina rises from her chilly onyx throne. The flickering embers stirring back to life within her breast had compelled her to rise, and as they burst once more into flame, the line of silver candelabras begin to glow with an intensity that hurts her eyes. Darkness recedes as light suffuses the chamber, bathing her in warmth that steals her breath away.

Equal measures of excitement and dread war within soul, for within the hour she will leave this place for the surface.

Eyes slipping shut, she conjures up an image to quell her fears – it is one she often draws upon whenever the tenacious, insidious claws of despair dig into her psyche during the interminable, desolate months of spring and summer. Rich chestnut hair cascades in waves and curls over shapely shoulders and down a finely arched back. Pale skin lacking scar or blemish, smooth to the touch like the silk produced by Minerva's loom and sweet as honey to the taste, bared to her greedy hands and eyes. Sea green irises merry with youth and vitality and unbridled curiosity that will burn a brilliant amber when angered or aroused and fade into sickly blue while in the throes of anguish. A frame to rival Diana; a visage more comely than Venus; and a smile and laugh even brighter than those of Apollo and Laetitia that alone is capable of banishing the perpetual gloom that drapes the realm of the dead in a curtain of despair; all belonging to the only person in all of existence that truly matters to Regina anymore.

Soon, so very soon, a voice more beautiful than any of the nine Muses will caress her longing ears. She recalls in vivid detail how it sounded upon the first such reunion.

“Oh! How dreary you have allowed our home to become in my absence,” Ruby (for that is the chosen name of Regina’s beloved) had trilled, an effective chastisement delivered in tones so affectionate and gentle that even the Goddess of the Dead cannot summon a word to speak in her own defense. “I shall spend a week at the very least removing cobwebs and dust, no to mention relocating all of the industrious little creatures that have taken up residence in the shadows. Really, love, why must you continually refuse to utilize the resources at your disposal? Sydney is a splendid caretaker, if not an incorrigible gossip, and Maleficent a wise and capable counselor. How many times must I come back home to an unfit abode before you take my suggestions to heart? Honestly, your continued stubbornness on this issue is most disappointing!”

“Bah! Due caution would appear as stubbornness to your disgustingly naive notion that redemption is possible for those whose misdeeds are as numerous and grievous as mine,” Regina had replied, nose curling in rebellious distaste at any suggestion she be so lazy – or efficient depending upon perspectives not her own clearly superior one – delegate the tasks laid upon her by laws more ancient than her fellow deities or the beastly titans who birthed them.

Oh how Ruby had bristled at that well-aimed dart. “Your sarcasm is not appreciated. Nor is your conclusion. I do not believe it is naive to hope for those who have made mistakes so long as they are capable of remorse. I would not be here otherwise.”

“Perhaps that is your great error. You have blinded yourself with optimism to the truth that I am indeed beyond hope and have doomed yourself to an eternity of sorrow by consequence.”

Regina knows how best to hurt with her words. The skill is, according to her peers, the one most responsible for her being an outcast. Her sister had offered an olive branch after their cataclysmic war, but she had refused it in a caustic speech that is recited in worshipful devotion by her Terran acolytes to this day.

Words are a weapon to be used with precision, their mother had taught them as youths just blooming into their cosmic powers, for they are every bit as devastating as fire or lightning.

When she was banished from Olympos and cast into Dīs upon a searing bolt a lightning, Regina was robbed of her fire. But they could not take her words, and she has used them ever since in both condemnation and reward to pass judgment upon those who arrive upon her shores. That Ruby is too commonly a target for her verbal pila is a stain upon her conscience that irritates her far more than it should considering who she is and what she has done.

Life would be much simpler the six months per annum they are together if she could learn to hold her barbed tongue in check, but Regina has never been one for simple. And so they are often at odds over the banal. They will quarrel over contentious adjudications. They will spend hours in mutually stubborn silence while offended or emotionally injured. They will disagree on meals, spar over Olympian philosophy and art and politics, and speak to one another in outbursts of raw angry passion wielding razor sharp phrases which leave wounds so deep as to be nearly visible.

But there is also love between them. Immeasurable love. Love that time and distance cannot erase when they are forced apart for half the year. Love that is blind to faults and annoyances, that weathers storms of rage and frustration and misunderstanding, and that forgives trespasses and inspires self-improvement however glacially incremental. A love that twines their immortal essences together so tightly that they share a dreamscape while sleeping, and that they have no use for repose is of no consequence when the aching of loneliness or separation becomes unbearable.

It is that boundless, magical, incomprehensible love which revived Regina’s moribund heart and made her start to care again. For that reason she is grateful beyond description on most days and on her worst regretful she ever laid eyes upon the gorgeous creature who single-handedly turned her entire world upside down.

“If I am blind to love you, then may I never see again,” Ruby had said, those enchanting eyes glimmering so brightly in the faint light that the individual strands of her irises were visible. “And if this is to be my doom as you say, then I accept it with open arms, for it shall be one of bountiful joy. The only sorrow for me will come when we are again forced to part. I spent the past six months yearning for you just as I shall the next six when our bell proclaims the arrival of spring.”

“Well, if not blind then you are certainly foolish,” Regina said, throat choked with so much feeling that she felt as though she might suffocate.

Ruby had merely smiled in that way only she could, playful and loving and sincere all at once. “I am guilty as charged of being a fool, my Queen. Your fool.”

Unable to help herself, Regina felt her lips curl up at the edges. “Well, we cannot all be perfect. Not even the celebrated daughter of Ceres Eugenia, it appears.” So as to change the reverse of their conversation back toward less emotionally distressful directions, she had cleared her throat and then returned to the original topic. “As for your so-called suggestion: it is, quite frankly, absurd. One of the two miserable wretches you mentioned earlier is a driveling sycophant while the other is a maudlin dragoness whose fits of fire-breathing mania lead me question my decision to retain her. No doubt they both would abuse such positions to undermine my authority. Prudence would dictate that I should cast them both into Tartarus and be done with their annoyances!”

Ruby’s gasp of affront was so dramatic that it echoed through the cavernous chamber and caused the nearest candle flames to flicker.

“Morta Plutonia Regina! One of these days I will finally teach you how to be nice to those in your charge, especially those who would call you their friend.”

Regina winced as she always does at her given name and returned the favor in kind with as much snark as she possibly could.

“I need no friends, Proserpina Libera,” she said. “I have the dead to keep me company.”

The story of their first meeting, and incidentally how Proserpina Libera became Ruby, then begins to play through Regina’s mind. Before long, she becomes so lost in the memory that time ceases to have any meaning whatsoever.

Her musings last until a ghostly bell rings in the distance. She emerges from wistful recollection to mournful chiming accompanied by plaintive voices singing an announcement that summer has ended and autumn has begun.

Once, there was no bell to quarterly drone and chant in languid harmony with the turning of seasons. Once, she was painfully alone amongst a swelling sea of souls thrust cruelly into her charge. Once, she was content to nurse her hatred of her elder sibling and ruler of Olympos whose envious betrayal resulted in Regina’s current circumstance, and she had bent that hatred and bitterness toward piling ever-more layers of jagged ice upon the impenetrable fortress that was her irreparably damaged heart. Once, there had been no evidence of life at all in this place that she called home save the frost of her breath and tortured moaning of the damned that plagued her every waking hour. Once, she had believed herself incapable of love and took great comfort in that belief.

But that was before her beloved rosa rubra strolled through the forest she was traversing in secret, and left upon every inch of earth those bare feet trod over a carpet of lush red roses.

The surface back then felt much further away, too far for Regina’s overtaxed attention to be concerned with happenings above yet too near to ever escape hope of being freed from her endless confinement. The only reason she kept up with current events was to better evaluate the lives of those she was constrained by unbreakable law to judge. One day she learned of a scandal detailing how her sister had become impregnated by a mortal man through spurious means and birthed a daughter who was a gifted huntress that won the heart of a princess. Knowing that her unforgivably wicked sibling Zelena would be unable to resist interfering, she arranged a brief excursion to terra firma. It had taken countless hours of planning and work, but she had managed to slip through an isolated section of the great Gates of Dīs while Cerberus was distracted (the brutish if not mildly adorable mongrel had still been hopelessly under the thrall of her sister, an enchantment that Ruby was blessedly able to break) and emerge in the land of the living for the first time in millennia.

At first Regina had been unable to do much more than marvel at the scenery. For thousands of years she had been trapped in a world of darkness that smelled and sounded and felt like death. But the world above was teeming with life, even the air smelled as though it were animate, and the overload of so much sensory input had nearly paralyzed her. Once she recovered, she began picking her way through the forest by foot as using her powers to travel would have alerted the Olympians that she was no longer present at her station.

About halfway through the journey, she was stopped cold by the sound of singing. That angelic verse was carried upon the wings of a gentle breeze straight through the mountainous walls of ice surrounding her heart. In moments so swift she was helpless to react, she physically felt her defenses shatter and her resolve to remain aloof from all emotion crumble. A single verse of that song had accomplished what the assembled armies of Olympos could not upon the bloody plains of Thessaly, a verse that she would eventually decree be recited each year by siren spirits upon the autumnal equinox. She was so mesmerized by the soft melodic quality of the singer’s voice that she would not know the rest of the song until Ruby performed it much later.

Recklessly, like a starving lion desperately trailing its only hope for survival, Regina followed the song to the edge of a tiny clearing. And then Regina saw her. In the midst, haloed by Apollo’s rays, she danced and sang as birds joined in with the melody and branches swayed hypnotically to the rhythm. Clad in a flowing crimson-trimmed dress, draped by a lavish red cloak, crowned by a wreath of fresh flowers with roses crawling up her bare arms; her expression open in untold wonderment, cheeks ruddy with the exhilaration of living; she was – and still is – the very epitome of beauty, and grace, and charm, and hope, and joy. Save for the wedding night, no sight before or since has ever rivaled that first glimpse of embodied perfection.

A deafening rumble shakes the cavernous hall as the earth above lazily yawns as if arising from a seasonal slumber, snatching Regina’s focus away from that first fateful meeting. From above, rubble rains down as mote and stone, and the prevailing sunlight filtering through the haze casts a diluted shadow across the hall.

She turns her eyes up, squinting to mitigate the intense pain of photo-sensitivity, and watches impassively as the detritus begins to mold itself into a great spiral staircase. One by one the steps arrange themselves, each uniform in shape and perfectly spaced out as she had commanded centuries ago via laborious incantation, until they have spanned from polished obsidian floors to vaulted granite ceiling.

With measured steps she ascends the newly formed stairway, her raven-down cloak billowing behind her. She holds her head high, proud and regale, as she ascends. Eager anticipation has caused her heart to thunder and her limbs to buzz with energy, but she is still a Queen. Always a Queen.

The afternoon sun hangs low on the horizon, her cousin having turned his attentions elsewhere in the world, and the air is crisp and clean. Death has yet to arrive in earnest, the foliage of the forest remains mostly verdant, but Regina can feel it approaching from every angle, a stooping, skulking specter whose insatiable hunger is gnawing to the point of agony. For a split second she falters, inundated by the cloying scent of nascent decay which beckons her to turn heel and descend into the realm where such monsters as herself belong.

And then she hears it, the introductory lines of a new song written solely for her:

My love, my love, to thee I call;

My love, the fairest of them all

With raven’s hair and silken skin.

I come at last to thee again!

As if an insect brushed away from one’s collar, death recedes into the back of her consciousness so that life can inhabit the space it has abandoned. Life that reverently whispers her name into the crook of her neck and the flesh of her shoulder, that holds her hand and brushes away the tears that began to fall again after infusing her with vitality she had never before experienced, and that loves her beyond any logical explanation and refuses to ever give up on her. Life that has a name, Ruby, and is currently waiting for her in meadow they both hold so dear.

Squaring her shoulders, Regina strides forward with renewed strength. She has a reunion to attend that she has been awaiting for six very long months. Until Ruby points it out, she will not even realize she is smiling.

rating my books on their aesthetic by color

this is a very small sample of my actual book collection, i have easily hundreds more. these are just the ones that i have on display. they get rotated around on occasion (usually when i get new books) but for the most part these have been the ones ive had on display since i built the shelves when 5 years ago.

red/orange/yellow

overall okay aesthetic. wide variety of genres, soft and hard covers and heights. endless summer and the heroes guide to saving your kingdom are two of my favorites. minus points for catching fire that was the weakest book of the series. could use some more decorations.

overall: 7/10

greens

pretty good stack. the magnus chase series slaps. shadowhunters and downworlders is pretty decent literary criticism. theres a gallagher girls book which is a yes. i dont think i finished burning maze but that was a good seres. and i like those shells.

overall: 8/10

turquoiseish

another magnus chase, yes. the ex games is by far the best freaking romance novel ive ever read (i went through a phase when i was like 13 dont ask). lost hero was not my favorite. and i like my smiley doll she's cute. colors are very aesthetically pleasing.

overall: 8/10

lightish blues

good height variation. and color variation. big fan of that. contains the entire dark artifices series which kinda slapped. mockingjay was by far the best hunger games book. and ofc tfios. the romantics was absolutely hilarious. and the driftwood and the ohm are very good.

overall: 10/10

dark blues

a pjo with original cover. another gallagher girls and that one was funny but no zach so... city of ashes was not my favorite one but its in my favorite series. and my 10th anniversary copy of city of bones that my best friend and i exchanged for our 5 year friendiversary. i like the boxes but the other two things are a little much.

overall: 9/10

blue/purple/pink

too many hardcovers. they're all practically the same size. mostly decent array tho. they're alright i guess. the blood of olympus was funny and so was the sword of summer. and i think those two gallagher girls ones were pretty good.

overall: 6/10

whites

three gayle forman books. just one day and just one year were really good but they're too close together. between shades of gray slapped. but they're all the same size. plus the unicorn pot i made in 7th grade. i think it might be possessed.

overall: 7/10

browns

all solid books. dont remember a super lot about any of them. united we spy was a good one i think ? shoutout to the duck i got out of an arcade during prom weekend

overall: 7/10

blacks

some of my absolute favorite books are in this section. two of the infernal devices books. city of lost souls and city of heavenly fire. the hunger games is really solid. the last olympian with original cover. i remember really liking six of crows but i dont remember what its about. ruby red fort take your last breath is hilarious and boys bears and a serious pair of hiking boots is up there on the best romance novels list. and the jar of stuff i found in maine. could have more decorations but the goodness of the books compensates for that.

HADES AND PERSEPHONE Chain of Gold AU - James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs

James Herondale never wanted to be the God of the dead. Technically, he was god of the Underworld, with his right hand man Thanatos god of the dead, but no one cared about semantics.

What with James’ apparent ghastly appearance and pale skin, no one made the mistake of assuming him a living creature. No one person on the sunny side of the world had ambrosial eyes like James. No satyr, Demi-god, or even nymph had irises the color of his. More than living creatures feared his name, they feared his eyes more.

Some people, however, did not mind James’ eyes. His friend Matthew, god of sunlight and poetry, compared them to the first rays of daylight that sparks off the edge of his sun chariot. James has blushed. He did not get compliments often, especially by beings with sun-kissed skin.

He does not understand why the Olympians fear him similar to that of a mortal. After all, gods are immortal. Why should they fear appearing death?

It does not due well for James to focus on this. It’s been four thousand years, he should be over it by now.

James sits upon his throne of obsidian, pondering many things he should not think about lest he fall into a hole of despair. If that abyss could even be darker than hell itself.

Many of James’ subjects wander around, dusting off his ceiling long paintings of various things found above ground. Some of them believe James is mocking them by hanging up such photos of the world they are no longer part of, but that’s not why James do it.

James loves paintings of the sea, of sunflowers and dandelions and trees with weeping leaves. It’d been nearly a thousand years since James had been on the sunny side of things. He dared never take a step, as his yearning would cause such a fulfillment that he would no longer return to his domain.

“You should just do it.” Thanatos said, startling James.

Thanatos - or rather Jesse as he liked to be called - arched a Stygian brow. His green eyes were similar to the emeralds that adorned James’ fanciful palace ceiling.

“You spoke out loud,” Jesse supplied.

“Oh,” James said. “Well why do you think I should go above ground?”

Jesse shrugged. “You have nothing to loose. Besides, you are getting pale, my lord.”

James rolled his eyes. “Fine, but if I get sunburned I shall have Matthew run over you with his Chariot.”

James stood, his royal robes falling around his long legs. The royal black velvet swished against the marble floor. Slowly, he reached inside and took out the books he kept in the inside pockets, setting them along the arms of his throne.

Jesse arched another brow, but said nothing else. Even he knew James lived vicariously through book characters. Book characters that could live in sunlight, who could ride magnificent beasts and marry their loves without the fear of being feared. Sometimes, James wished he could carve out the godly part of himself and become more... normal. Living.

It did not take long for James to walk up to the land of the living. He past his three-headed dog Cerebus and the Elysian Fields where the heroes James read about remained.

Sunlight was a funny thing to the god of the underworld.

Wind with a hint of cherries and apples blew past James, making him scrunch up his nose. He was used to pomegranates, really.

James appeared to have landed, or rather found himself, in a meadow filled with narcissus and chrysanthemums. Their vivid colors burst against the solid green Earth. No jewel could entertain their color.

James looked up, watching as sunlight shone through the leaves, dimpling on his skin giving him spots.

James took a deep breath. Why was he here again? It was not like he had someone to meet? Maybe Matthew-

James’ thoughts stopped short when he heard a voice. A feminine voice as soft as the summer wind.

James slowly turned towards it, treading lightly on the branches that littered the ground.

On a patch of grass in the middle of the meadow was a girl. A girl wearing a summer sky blue dress adorned with pink flowers at the neckline and hemline. Her skin was dark against the pastel dress, sun kissed mixed with cinnamon. Her hair was a vibrant red, dark as a ruby. She laid on the ground with a narcissus in her hand. At her side was a gleaming gold sword, one of which she traced absent mindedly with her free fingers.

“Marriage?” She said to the flower. “Marriage to a nymph I need not know?” Disgust warmed her words.

“Who does my mother think she is?” The girl asked. “Sona, goddess of flowers and fruit and all that, I get it. But this? Marriage? I do not believe it is in her power to ask me that, not even as my mother.”

“I will not marry.” She said and raised her sword. The gleaming weapon cast sunlight spots along the ground and her skin. “Lest I shall part with you.”

“I am the goddess of spring time. I do as I please.” She said again, as though she were trying to convince herself. “Not even Alastair backed me up!” She told the sword. “He just nodded and scolded me for opposing mother. They are too alike, my mother and brother.”

She sighed and lower her sword to her chest, letting the blade rest upon her sternum. “I shall only marry who I love, but what can I do when who I love does not love me?”

“Kill them.”

The girl started and sat up, whirling to look at James. Her eyes widened and her pink mouth dropped.

He hasn’t meant to say that. But as someone with first hand experience to heart break, he could not stop his resurfacing feelings. Although he no longer loved Grace, the woman who never loved him anyway, the feelings still burned like salt that would never leave a wound.

“James?” The girl asked.

James blinked. “You recognize me?” Although he did not look on part with a living creature, she shouldn’t have been able to tell so soon and so far away.

“Of course I do,” She said and then frowned. “Do you not know me?”

James opened his mouth but nothing came out. He thought over the hundreds of thousands of faces he’d seen during his existence, but he can’t remember hers. He would remember hers.

The girl crossed her arms and looked away from James, obviously upset. “Cordelia.” She snapped, her ruby red hair blowing in the breeze.

“Right,” James said realizing. “Yona’s daughter. You specialize in...flowers.”

Cordelia looked offended. “Flowers keep this world alive, you know that? Obviously you don’t, God-of-Death.” She bit her lip but did not apologize.

James was astounded. Many did not say sentences to him. Much less an insult.

“Have we met before?” James asked, wondering what he did to receive such vehemence.

Cordelia squeaked. “Yes! Numerous times in Mount Olympus!”

James needed to change the topic. “Who are you to marry?” James asked, daring to step closer.

Cordelia blushed, her cheeks as red as her hair. James wanted to touch her hair, see if it was as warm as the day itself.

“Someone I do not even know.”

“What about the on you’re in love with?” James asked. “Why not him or her?”

Cordelia watched him for a long moment with an unreadable expression. James thought perhaps she is searching his secret worthiness.

“Doesn’t matter.” Cordelia said at last. “Why, I bet they don’t even know my name.”

James nodded, trying to feel sympathetic. “I’m sorry.” He said. “I’m sure they would like you if they knew you.”

Cordelia scowled at him. Surprising, her scowl was as pretty as her smile.

She sighed. “It matters not. My mother will force me to marry since I cannot obtain a lover myself.”

“You could marry me.” James said before he even realized her could say such words. But he had been too busy looking at the flowers that adorned her dress, at the golden sword laid beside her like a hero fallen on the Earth.

Cordelia’s eyes were wide. “Truly?” She asked in disbelief. “Why would you...”

“I do not know.” James said. “But you have spoken to me longer than anyone has in over a century, and you are the most beautiful living thing I have ever seen.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You didn’t even remember my name.”

James sucked in a breath. “To be fair, Yona never allows me anywhere near her so out of that avoidance I must have mistakenly avoided you.”

Cordelia seemed to deem this answer good enough and stood. She was almost as tall as James, but much more graceful. She strode up to him and looked him in the eyes without flinching. Suddenly, she spun around him and laced her arm through his.

“I accept your proposal.” She said, trying to feigh non-chalance. “Take me to your palace.”

James heart sped up on the verge of hope. “Will you be alright in the underworld? With no sunlight?”

Cordelia thought for a moment before shrugging. “We can work something out.” She smiled. “Do you have food down there? I am famished.”

James, understanding the vow Cordelia had made, smiled. “I believe there to be the most delicious pomegranates.”
