idk how much the remembrance association overshadows in the UK, but poppies are also opium, right? And apparently they're also a symbol for sleep, peace and death bc sedative I guess. So that checks out. ( @rearranging-deck-chairs )

Its use as a drug is also deliberately mentioned in Interstellar:

Cora: “Hellia was the most harmless world in the sky. Then the Corporation bought the entire planet, including its population, for one reason only. To harvest the Hell Poppy.” Belinda: “Is that like... drugs?

But in that case is a different kind of opiate of the masses (which television is referred to as being, if you’re on your TV meta game).

Belinda: “PoppyHoney? I'm sorry? Your planet was invaded for honey?” Cora: “No. My planet was invaded for honey flavouring.” They took the seeds and burnt the fields so we could never grow it back.

So Poppy is:

-Something in need of remembrance. Tick. -Can be used as an opiate/drug/sedative. -Not honey itself but just flavoured like honey.

And potentially specific to the Doctor’s offspring now, and the story he’s now telling about Gallifrey: the seeds (child?) were taken, and the fields burnt (Pythia2.0) so they could never have any more children.
