with the sound of the wind chime, you entered the diner looking for the person you came here to meet. scanning the restaurant, you recognize the spikes of dirty blond hair and instantly feel your heart quicken. it's crazy you think you could recognize the man from the back of his head; it also scares you to think how much you know about rusty.

rusty ryan, your brother's best friend.

rusty ryan, the man. you've had feelings for since meeting him all those years ago.

walking towards the booth he sat in, you couldn't help the smile breaking out of your face. you would feel embarrassed at how giddy you were if you weren't so excited to sit down with rusty for one of your weekly meetups.

ever since your brother went away to prison and rusty moved to L.A., he's been keeping you company with small things like these weekly check-ins. You think its more of the obligation rusty must feel towards your brother, which couldn't be further from the truth for rusty.

Rusty, unbeknownst to you for the longest time, has been harbouring the same silly crush, but how could he make a move on his brother's sister? especially when said brother is currently in jail. it just wouldn't seem right, rusty thinks, but still, he couldn't stop thinking about you.

"hey, rusty." you greeted as you slid into the booth. 

"hey (y/n), you look..." rusty leans forward and gives you a once over before meeting your warm gaze, "really good today." for someone who was supposed to not be flirting with his best friend's sister, he is doing precisely that. Rusty couldn't care less; he was already breaking the rules just by thinking of you romantically.

in response to the compliment, you grew flustered. once again, your heart quickened, but it wasn't your fault. how could it be when rusty sat across from you looking so good. you couldn't help it; I mean, at the end of the day, you were a woman who could resist the Ken doll in front of you?

rusty, as usual wore one of his very savvy suits. today, he decided to pair a grey dress shirt with a black blazer and black slacks. You couldn't help but feel underdressed in your own outfit. today you paired a pair of bootcut jeans with a shirt with some kind of motorcycle. unbeknownst to you, rusty could care less about what you wore. frankly, he thinks you would look good wearing a potato sack. even then, he would still want you.

"thanks, rust, you don't look too bad yourself." you complimented, noticing how Rusty's smile grew even bigger. at that, you couldn't help but mimic his smile. 

"hello! how are you guys today?" both you and Rusty were shaken out of your little lovesick moment at the sudden appearance of your waitress. you and Rusty ordered, and your food arrived not long after. both of you entered a comfortable balance of eating and talking, just relishing in each others presence.

"so your birthday is tomorrow; got any plans, kid?" you rolled your eyes at the nickname. Rusty knowingly smirked, knowing you hate the nickname, but found it amusing just to tease you occasionally (because he found you incredibly cute when you got a little frustrated, but he would never admit that aloud...actually, he probably would).

"rusty, I'm practically 30 now. You got to let the nickname go." you tried to sound annoyed but failed. As much as you pretended to be annoyed by his little antics, you couldn't help liking the little banter between you both (because you felt it was the only time the lines between you and rusty got blurred).

"maybe tomorrow I'll come up with a new one." rusty shrugged and leaned back in his booth. you snickered before responding, "Did it take all your brain might to come up with 'kid'?" Rusty mockingly gasped. "how did you know?" you laughed at his mock shock.

"but seriously, what are you going to do tomorrow?" your birthday was always a big deal to your brother; since your parents passed, Danny felt obligated to do anything to bring the family together. so spending this one without him or your sister would be challenging for you. the lack of plans just reminded you how lonely you were and how much you missed your family. 

you shrugged. "Danny's currently...unavailable. basher is halfway across the country on a job, my sister is in Europe, and Frank is currently well...not Frank. Lou and Tammy are also unavailable, so." you fidgeted with your cup of coffee while trying to fight, feeling disappointed. It was your 30th birthday, and I mean, you were allowed to feel a bit disappointed. 

rusty frowned at the sight of your disappointed face. from what Danny told him, he understands why you would be slightly disappointed. 

"so you got no plans." rusty confirms, trying not to make it sound like he was rubbing it in. 

"no rusty, none at all...why?" Rusty shrugs and leans forward in his chair. He reaches over the table and lays his arm close to yours, and you can't help but mentally kick yourself for feeling so giddy over the closeness. what am I? a schoolgirl? I'm almost thirty, and here I am, feeling flustered over not even a touch but the possibility of one. you thought to yourself.

Rusty taps the space near your elbow and smiles softly. "if that's the case, I'll take you out tomorrow, birthday girl. just be ready for my arrival." you frowned at him and shook your head.

"We don't have to do anything rusty; it's just my birthday." Rusty clicked his tongue before touching your arm. You couldn't help but feel a little bit silly for relishing in the slight touch.

"I don't think you understand that I'm taking you out, and that's that." Rusty firmly stated. you bit your lip to stop smiling too wide before looking down at your cup with a sigh. from his angle, you looked tempting. A stray piece of hair fell, and he instantly went to tuck it behind your ear but stopped. 

at the end of the day, rusty knew that you two were adults and free to make your own decisions. Still, if he were to swoop in now and make his move on you, it would look like he was just waiting for Danny to be out of the picture before making his move. as strong as he felt for you, rusty couldn't do that to Danny, hell he was like a brother to him.

rusty cleared his throat and leaned back into the booth, trying to increase the space between you two so he wouldn't do anything he couldn't take back. to calm his own beating heart, rusty cleared his throat again.

"Plus, what kind of friend would I be to your brother if I didn't care for you during this trying time." Rusty joked. internally, you sighed again, the warmth you felt before that comment instantly fading away. once again you were reminded that rusty was doing this out of an obligation to your brother. once again, you deluded yourself into thinking that rusty saw you more than your family. 

to fight back against your own disappointment, you also leaned back into your seat and forced a smile.

"so what time should I be expecting you then?" rusty felt your mood switch and couldn't figure out why. did I say something wrong? rusty asks himself, trying to find an answer before moving past your sudden change in demeanour. 

"it wouldn't be a surprise, would it now?" Rusty smirked at you before taking a sip of his coffee.

you narrowed your eyes at this, knowing no good could come from that ridiculously good-looking smirk. regardless, you still felt giddy at the idea of celebrating your birthday with rusty tomorrow. yet you couldn't help but remind yourself that Rusty most likely does not like you romantically. but you couldn't ignore the small delusional voice from the back of your head telling you that rusty could possibly see you outside of being his best friend's little sister.

The Rusty Danny Wedding headcannons 1

Danny: Groom. (Proposed to Rusty. Hands were surprisingly sweaty but gave a good speech about being partners in crime and whatnot.)

Rusty: Groom. (Let Danny propose to him. Said yes.)

Rueben: Rich mother-in-law who pays for everything and plans everything. (Cries at the dress fitting.)

Saul: Grumpy father-in-law who judges everything the whole time. (Cries at the ceremony.)

Tess: Maid of honor (Danny's side.)

Isabell: Maid of honor (Rusty's side.)

Linus: Best man (Both sides. They thought it would be really funny. He almost chokes on his water when they ask him.)

Yen: Flower girl. (He was in the circus, he knows the meaning of performance).

Livingston: Photographer. (Edits out everyone they don't like including Terry Benedict who for some reason came)

Frank: DJ. (Gets everyone to do the cha-cha slide at the reception 4 times. Gets jazzy with it.)
