Since it's almost Christmas I just wanna share one of my favorite RvB extras

End of rvb6 really always hits you're processing all that exposition anf then you go what the fuck Church is an ai and then it hits you with while the law has many penalties for the atrocities we inflict on others, there are no punishments for the terrors that we inflict on ourselves sincerely yours, the former director of Project Freelancer, Doctor Leonard Church. So good

Recovery One and Reconstruction throughts

I mentioned before I was rewatching rvb with a friend and tonight we watched season 6! It was awesome, as much as I love the BGC this is the stuff I've been really excited to get to

Here's some Thought™ I had about it

First of all, I still love South in Recovery One, I believe she genuinely regretted betraying North

Also the difference in the interactions between South and Wash between pfl and Recovery One is jarring but I love it, in RO it really feels like they're more on equal grounds

Someone mentioned a while ago how perceptive Simmons is and that really struck me when I realised he was the first to point out that you can't copy an AI

I'm still low-key bitter about Wash manipulating Church into sacrificing himself, they absolutely could've worked out a better plan and as much as it really was Church's fight, it definitely seemed like wash wanted the AI to be destroyed more than anyone else, Church barely had time to form an opinion on it, and it certainly wasn't an informed one

I think its interesting that even though Maine clearly wasn't in control anymore, the director and counselor still refused to address the AI directly, they always addressed 'agent Maine'

Walter Henderson suggested that Omega knew the Meta was coming (when talking about trying to get the comm tower back up), it makes me wonder if Omega really wanted no part in the meta and was genuinely trying to leave Valhalla before he arrived

I wonder if Tex was helping him too? I very much doubt she'd want taken by the meta

Delta's "you're... abandoning me?" Always makes me so sad

I still love the headcanon that Delta was very specifically bitter about South letting Theta get taken, and that's why he was so insistent Wash kill her

The "you...are the alpha" scene still gets me so excited aaa

I can't wait to see Donut and Tucker again, y'all know I'm in a Tucker-loving phase rn and I always love Donut fhdj

The director and Chairman call each other "dear" a lot and it makes it sound like they're writing vaguely romantic hate mail ("It seems you will earn your place in history after all, dear director" "You must understand one basic fact for all this to make sense, my dear Chairman.")

I'm pretty sure I had more thoughts but I forgot them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

South’s Death

I feel like no one talks about South’s death enough.

Her last words are, “What’re you gonna do, sh—“, with the rest of sentence presumably bring “shoot me?”. This seems arrogant, which falls in line with her personality, but think about it from her perspective.

South hardly interacted with Washington after the Epsilon implantation, and lost contact with him in the years following the crash of the Mother of Invention. In her eyes, he’s still the dorky rookie. They were like family during Freelancer. Sure, they interact some during Recovery One, but she was still spared by him. His personality shift wasn’t as apparent.

What she doesn’t know is how much Wash has changed. He’s not the same person, something which is especially exemplified during The Recollection. The 180 in his character is really amplified in this scene. It shows just how terrible Freelancer was to him.

Sitting here watching reaction vids of RvB 6:16, and minds getting blown by that reveal.

“Meta” Wash theory

Delta in Season 6 told Wash that “Memory is the key”.

Wash in Season 16 is having gaps in his memory.

When Maine was the Meta, it was implied that he didn’t remember or recognize any of his old teammates except for perhaps Wash, given that he spared Wash’s life twice.

The first time when South shot Wash in the back, proceeding to take Delta and run.

The second time in Season 6, when the Meta activated his temporal distortion unit as Wash and Caboose were escaping the resulting explosion from “The worst throw ever...of all time”

We know that Wash has cerebral hypoxia (whereas Maine was influenced by Sigma). However, the music that was most often associated with instances concerning the Meta was used as soon as Carolina told Wash that his brain had gone several minutes without oxygen.

The music ended moments before Wash walked away from Carolina as she sought for words to justify her actions.

The first time an agent from Project Freelancer encountered the Meta, where his “identity” per say, was confirmed, was when Maine took Eta and Iota from Carolina before tossing her off the cliff. Promptly after, Sigma makes his proclamation of “We are the Meta”.

Maine walked away from Carolina after throwing her off that cliff as “The Meta”.

Wash walked away from Carolina with a feeling of betrayal, moments after the Meta music had played.

Both occurrences happened in Carolina’s presence, and it’s possible that Wash may begin to act similar to how the Meta did.

After all, it is revealed that the “cosmic gods” are nothing more than A.I. with seemingly magical powers.

Granted, Price did reveal in Season 13 that Wash has refused A.I. implantation due to his experience with Epsilon. But this isn’t the first time the Meta music has played when the main focus of the scene is on Wash.

The Meta music also played in Season 7 - right before the story arc where Wash became one of the villains.

If he does go Meta, does that mean he might react to Carolina similar to the way Maine did? And spare the BGC? How would him becoming the next Meta affect the plot?

Would Wash take the A.I. to fight Chrovos??

rvb season 6 commentary track fun facts

the voice over the speaker in the first episode is actually martha from trocadero

there were 72-80 characters on screen in the beginning of ep 1 and they had to film like 4 different games and glue them together n it took em forever

they said the counselor’s va being an improv guy fits him because like the counselor hes great with the uncomfortable silence

the mcrib is huge in japan. mcdonalds sponsored the commentary

gus and geoff like to get drunk and entertain people at conventions while burnie is forced to actually do the boring shit. very grimmons + church core

halo 3′s theater mode allowed them to do way better camera movements but also they had to do all of the headbobbing and then go into theater mode to set it up and see if the eyeline matched and if the headbobbiing will work with the camera movements. they basically had to film it without looking through the camera

which also made having to do retakes hell because theyd have to go back in the game and set everything up again

but we got nice sweeping long shots and good cinematography from it so it was worth it

reconstruction has a lot of different themes: reconstructing the bgc, reconstructing the alpha, and also the reconstruction of the world after halo 3 and the director and chairman squabbling for power after the war has ended

they took 6 months to play around with halo 3 when it came out before doing reconstruction and they were able to find out every exploit and possibility and familiarize themselves with the maps so they could write the story

for example when the meta calls sarge on a hologram they were able to do that because they figured out that dual-wielding the pistols and then lowering the weapons makes the characters arms stick out like that

the tex/shelia is one of their favorites because threading in the dramatic moments in both adds resonance/emotion to the story and makes the humorous moments mean more as a break from the drama. also kathleens voice acting is fucking good but we all knew that

shelia’s va is called first take yomary because shes the best

they used the mongoose’s headlights to light the scenes 

wash’s worst throw ever of all time line was improved and shannon did a lot of that in general in order to keep wash from being boring

mark bellman is burnie’s brother in law meaning both theta and delta are voiced by church’s family (and elijah wood is possibly burnies long lost father)

they were anticipating the flamethrower as a weapon for years since it was cut from halo 1 and 2 and theyre stingy with using new weapons and then they wasted it on wash burning south’s body 

donut’s va was having a baby during season 6 and said “I was too busy fucking to be in the show”

south and washes vas are improv partners oh my god thats so cute,

the meta’s character design uses different pieces from different armor sets which meant it took a week of playing halo to unlock the armor combos on all the different characters

they also cut the meta’s armor changing as he steals parts from different freelancers and even considered using after effects to make his limbs different colors, which would have been cool. however they said they were planning on having him change helmets so im glad they didn’t

fans could see the games on xbox live and predict what characters were going to be in what eps so they made fake donut and tucker accounts to trick people. they ended up taking them offline completely whiich caused about 20 different small annoying problems

they already had the plans for the AI that were going to be revealed in s10.

(they also intentionally based the different AI on different types of alters in DID systems and tried to say that theta is a little and omega is a persecutor) 

the creepy we missed you delta line when the meta gets delta is theta speaking 

at this point their idea was that carolina was dead and that having two AIs had killed her

they filmed the church shots by using two takes and overlaying the opacity of the church shot but then someone on the forums guessed that they used poor camo to do it and they were like “fuck thats a way better idea lets do that”

they talked a lot about maps but they didn’t say which scenes used which maps so i don’t fucking know what they were talking about what is standoff

burnie blasted through it but it sounds like they were planning the alpha reveal since s3

they cut references to tex because they wanted reconstruction to be a stand alone piece and didnt want to confuse people by talking about her if they hadn’t seen 1-5. there was a scene where wash told church that tex was the one who went to break out the alpha and that helped convince him to stay and fight the meta

i showed my friend season 6 to start. he was super confused anyways it doesn’t make sense to start there. this was a bad call and i’m mad

people really thought that with two episodes left they were going to go find tucker due to his cameo at the end of s6

its the penultimate episode and they’re still fucking talking about McRibs

they couldn’t remove the HUD in normal halo gamemode for shots that didn’t need camerawork and this made it take 3x as long as when they used halo 2

burnie added two lines to the director to emphasize that theyre not there and controlling remotely and then when joel watched it he instantly thought that the director was a robot and was mad they didn’t hype up the reveal enough

the emp shutting down the vehicles is just someone offscreen shooting the cars with a plasma pistol

no matter whats going down or what conspiracy is happening, the reds are just the reds. the sun could explode and theyll still be the reds

oh man. the closing monologue of rvb6. 

when we get an unsettling suspicion with the line “these AI, they all come from somewhere” 

and then it progresses to the line “there are no punishments for the terrors we inflict on ourselves” and we’re starting to think oh no, they wouldn’t, would they? and it’s starting to look like there’s no other explanation but you’re still hoping that’s not it. there’s a pit in your stomach because you’re starting to understand where they’re going with this. but it’s not quite real yet.

and we finally fade to black and get to “sincerely yours, the former director of project freelancer, dr. leonard church” and boom. the fucking bomb drops. “red vs blue reconstruction” shows on screen and the music plays. that’s the end of the season. alpha was fucking based on the director. they fucking did that. all the buildup of this past season (and the past 5 seasons) has paid off. and we’re just left with the harrowing revelation (haha) of what the director just dropped on us and how entirely fucked up that is.
