The history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom cannot be discussed only in terms of Okinawa Island, so here is clothing from the Yaeyama Islands, which have a slightly different culture to Okinawa (assuming late 1800s). She is wearing a sudina (vest, similar to the dujin) and a kakan (skirt). The length is unique and cute. You might think this is special clothing, but you can see people doing normal work (babysitting, washing clothes, making tribute cloth) wearing this outfit. However, not everyone wears sudina and kakan; many wear the same bashofu outfit as on Okinawa. Maybe it's a difference of status or position..?

it’s still mind blowing to me that indigenous taiwanese people and ryukyuans are not related. how close taiwan and the ryukyu islands are, yet they don’t speak the same language family nor are they even descended from the same ancestral stock. taiwanese aboriginals came from pre-austronesians in mainland china (presumably the yangtze where the austronesian-associated haplogroup was found) whereas ryukyuans are descended from native jomon and yayoi people from the korean peninsula.

"80 years ago today, USS TEXAS (BB-35) delivered some payback for a friend at Iwo Jima. The previous day, the heavy cruiser USS PENSACOLA (CA-24) had been hit six times by a shore battery, killing 17, including her executive officer. TEXAS received orders on February 18th to take station near those guns and destroy them. She left a small gift of 195 fourteen-inch shells, silencing the shore battery.
