One day, Gin tells Atsuko about how Dazai saved them. And mentions how he trained her brother. And Atsuko just. 8| Nopes out if there, and immediately goes to find her friend because Ahe Has Words to share with him.

She goes to the Agency and finds Atsuhi, and he takes one look at her face knows something is up because she has legit never been that angry since he's known her. He points her downstairs, and it is there that she finds Dazai.

She drags him outside, and calmly asks about what Gin told her. There's an edge to her voice that he has never heard before, and briefly he wonders what has her like this.

Once he affirms the story though, he realizes, cuz she immediately starts berating him intensely, with a fire in her eyes he had never seen before and she's shaking with indignation. How could you treat Ryunosuke like that?! He was a boy! He didn't need to be strong, he needed to be SAFE! HE WAS A CHILD!

He's stupefied, which he was not used to feeling. She wipes angry tears from her eyes, and pokes him in the chest, hard. "You need to make this right, Osamu," she uses his first name with that edge and he almost feels ashamed. "Soon. You better not visit Yume until you fix this."

And she leaves, still shaking and holding back tears and angry. He watches her leave, bewildered at first, but then he settles into thought.

Atsuko was not easily angered; annoyed, yes, but she was rarely actually angry. She was also one of the few people who could almost see through him; she rarely put up with his bullshit on the days where his mind was dark.

And it was no secret how she felt about his former pupil. That likely fed her anger in this instance.

He returned to the cafe silent, and spent the rest of the work day thinking about his next course of action.

It was not very much in his nature to speak to people plainly. He favored the cryptic sort of speech that others look back on and go "Ohhh that's what he meant"

He left the Port Mafia, and left Akutagawa to fend for himself, after teaching him to be a monster. Part of him twisted at the realization; how had he never noticed? Why did it have to take an outsider standing up to him for even think about the damage he had done to somebody only two years younger than himself.

He would have to talk to him properly now, wouldn't he? He couldn't go on without being able to visit Yume... Or rather, seeing the waitress there, and teasing her to the point of blushing. His heart twisted this time; his pupil was very lucky indeed, to have that girl on his side.
