Water
Step right up and rest your peepers,
on a liquid that'll make you say jeepers.
It may look plain and unassumin',
but what if I told you it could get your plants a-bloomin'?
And that's not all, you ever have a thirst?
I tell you friends, ain't that the worst.
Your mouth's all dry, your spit is sticky,
but this potion will fix you, in a jiffy.
It goes great in soups, from chowder to bisque,
you can drink it hot or have it brisk.
Is that all it does? Why, don't be a fool,
heck, you can use it to fill your pool!
Too runny you say? Well, here's a trick,
put it somewhere cold, it gets hard as a brick!
Or maybe gas is more your scene,
simply give it a boil and now you've got steam.
Most impressive of all, and I'm not telling you fibs,
all living life needs this stuff to live.
It's everywhere, from the sky to your cells,
from the tip of your tongue to the bottom of wells.
What's this miracle substance you all want to know?
This stuff that's made with two H and an O?
Well pay attention and go with the flow,
it's hydratin', condensatin', precipitatin', evaporatin',
Water!

Todd McFarlane Productions Announces "The New U" Titles
Todd McFarlanes Spawn Universe is laying the foundation of a lineup of new comics called "The New U." This new era will follow the events of Spawn #350. The first three "The New U" comics are Sam & Twitch: Case Files, Rat City, and Monolith. "The New U" comics will span a variety of genres, including crime, horror, science-fiction, drama, and comedy.
Sam & Twitch: Case Files puts the detectives front and center in their own series. The comic hails from McFarlane and Jon Goff and artist Szymon Kudrański.
Sam & Twitch: Case Files #1 goes on sale on March 27, 2024.
Rat City, from Erica Schultz and Zé Carlos, follows Peter Cairn, ex-soldier, amputee, and Hellspawn in a post-war future. "But Peter isn't dead like Al. Peter got his Spawn powers from the nanites in his prosthetic legs—nanites that were affected when Al Simmons initiated his necroplasmic detonation in the present. Al had no clue that the effects would ripple across—not just space—and but time as well." (Image Comics)
Rat City #1 goes on sale on April 10, 2024.
Monolith, from Sean Lewis and Valerio Giangiordano, is a three part miniseries that explores the Hellspawn Monolith's origin and what his connection is with Omega Spawn.
Monolith #1 (of 3) goes on sale on May 15, 2024.

I think the reason Laura works so well on Kyle and Yost X-Force because it is a case of she shouldn't be there and it was a mistake for Scott to put her on there and Logan to keep her on there for so long. New Avengers seems to just have her there because they want a Wolverine to kill people. There isn't an inherent problem with Laura killing people but the story needs to be more than "isn't it cool that this Wolverine is killing people"
I would say Anon- “let’s give the book a chance.”
Maybe it’s a case of “Laura’s just there to be the ‘Wolverine’ character”…. Or it could be that Humphries wanted to explore characters that have often been used as weapons.
Liu had Laura work with Black Widow back in 2011- and it worked! It was definitely one of the better pair-ups Liu did!
Schultz has been exploring Laura interacting with characters like Bucky and Elektra in LKW…
“Laura is usually angry, and, despite my being able to relate to that, I wanted to show that she has an optimism, too,” Schultz shared. “It’s buried deep, but it’ll be unearthed a few times in this series. She’ll be exposed to other players that will show her that there is still good in the world despite the constant stream of horrors daily. Sounds a little too real, all things considered.”
I will give Schultz this- I definitely think her end goal is to have Laura realize that while life is HARD… sometimes you just have to make the best of it… that Laura DOESN’T have to be alone and that by choosing loneliness… she is effectively “missing out”. That life isn’t some “ALL or nothing” zero sum game that she often thinks it is- while it may not be “Laura’s perfect fantasy”… she can still have a “good life”.
Hellion…Gabby…Jubilee…ect all objectively know they might die being close to Laura… but they all still want her in their life anyway. They chose to be there, knowing the risk. And that’s often something Laura refuses to acknowledge.
I think it’s fair to say that Schultz run hasn’t been the strongest…but like Mariko Tamaki, I definitely see the points she’s trying to make and I think it’s an interesting choice.
If Humphries continues this storyline… I am willing to give it a chance!

What's the deal with the Emcee?

Yesterday I watched the 1972 film adaptation of Cabaret for the first time. I loved it so much I couldn't contain myself and I watched the Sam Mendes production with Alan Cumming as the Emcee right after it. And then I had to watch the Super Mario Bros film to cleanse my mind and sleep well afterward 😂.

One character managed to stay with me.
What's the deal with the Emcee?
He's the most evil character that I ever saw in a stage show. He makes my skin crawl in a way very few characters do. He makes the Leading Player from Pippin look moral by comparison. He absolutely terrifies me.
If there's a devil, Joel Grey as the Emcee is him. I can't think of a character with a more demonic aura than him in the film adaptation.

I was really surprised to learn that he is considered a "neutral character".
In the original production and the film version he is a more malicious character, representing the darkness that is slowly spread through Germany and that is distracting people with cheap tricks.
He's the distraction that keeps people from noticing that the Nazis are taking over everything.
I think in the post Sam Mendes productions he is depicted more as a symbol of political apathy. In Alan Cummings' portrayal, he is shown to be wearing a concentration camp uniform by the end, showing that as queer and Jewish artist, not even he and Kit Kat Klub could ignore the Nazis forever.

However I think this depiction of him as a victim comes from out of nowhere, since over the course of the whole show he is depicted doing nothing more than enjoying and celebrating the Nazis rise to power. He is explicitly depicted wearing a Nazi uniform, he's the one that sings the most antisemitic song in the show, and he is the one who smashes Herr Schultz's windows.

I really think by the way the show is staged, the Emcee is nothing more than a malicious presence, an omen of doom, and everything else just doesn't fit that well.
What do you make of this character?

WIP INTRO: NEON VIOLET
The light-leaks and scratches on the old film flicker over her face, masking her reflective white eyes. The video kicks back and loops. “My name is Nettie Schultz and I have died three times,” she repeats.
Blurb: On the island of Tombedel, no one dies. At least, no one stays dead.
After separating from his wife of over twenty years, London-based private investigator Abe Tannen visits the exclusive medieval island of Tombedel during their Saint Martin’s Day celebrations, but his much-needed vacation takes an unexpected turn when a man is murdered in his hotel: the first person to actually die on the island in over 1,000 years.
With the local law enforcement unprepared to handle a real murder, the investigation falls to Abe, who enlists the help of an eclectic group of ghosts.
When the investigation leads them to begin uncovering the island’s long-buried secrets, Abe and his team find themselves in far more danger than they could have anticipated. After all, there are far worse fates than death.
Setting: Tombedel, a mysterious medieval island off the coast of England. November of 2025, but also 1983 and 1934 and 802 AD and 509 AD.
Genre: Adult, sci-fi mystery
Series: 1 of 2
POV: 3rd person present tense, multi-pov
Vibes: glitter-smudged faces, foggy coasts, chainmail under t-shirts, crystal balls, ancient church towers, neon lights, dimly lit labs, tape recorders, ren faires, crumbling castles, rundown pubs, cable-knit sweaters, old magicks.
Soundtrack: Seventeen Going Under - Sam Fender / I'm Set Free - The Velvet Underground / Night Shift - Lucy Dacus / The Body Electric - Hurray for the Riff Raff / Yuri-G - PJ Harvey / My Darling Faye - Songs for Moms / Vampire Empire - Big Thief / The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen

Surgery
Scrubby up my hands nice and clean,
we gotta take out this guy's spleen.
Put on my gloves so I don't touch,
his belly full of squingy guts.
It's time to do medicinal battle,
nurse hand me that shiny scalpel.
I assess the patient with a steadied gaze,
should I make this incision at length, or sideways?
Eh, either way I'm going in,
a slice, a spurt, I need suction.
I'm in wrist deep and feeling round,
till that pesky organ is found.
Give me a dab, my brow's all sweaty,
these guts, they feel just like spaghetti.
He's flatlining, hurry! Those shock-y things stat!
Damn it man, we've just got to bring you back.
Give me 50 ccs of some medicine stuff,
whoo, his heart's restarted, alright pal, hang tough.
Ah, that's it! The forceps now!
To heal this man's my solemn vow.
Pull out the spleen, stitch up his slice,
procedure's done, nice and precise.
At least, that's what it looks like on TV,
If I left something out, please educate me.
- Sam Schultz

Hi there! I read your review of Cabaret and saw that one of your main complaints was that a lot of Jewish culture was staged/written out. I’m not Jewish and don’t have that baseline understanding of the religion/culture and was wondering if you could elaborate further?
Hi Anon, I'd be glad to elaborate a little more, with the caveat that I'm not Jewish either, but I do know a thing or two about the history of this show. I'm also long-winded, so... buckle in.
I don't believe the production team intentionally went into it and took an eraser to Judaism as they went, but I do believe that being an English team with far less Jewish influence in their culture and society has made them blind to the inherent Judaism of the story beyond the glaringly obvious. As I've said before, this is a revival made by gentiles for gentiles right from the very conceit. In centering the show on this nightmare puppet spectacle of a cabaret, it does a disservice to the real heart and moral of the story's true epicenter: the boardinghouse and Schneider and Schultz and the grounded people around them. The very fact that it's officially been retitled "Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club" (frankly redundant) shows that this production is no longer about the actual book, but about the frivolous hedonism. Schultz's Jewish storyline is an afterthought hastily plopped down into the cabaret setting. Because of this staging, the focus is never away from the now-very goyish cabaret. Cliff, Schneider, Schultz, and even Ernst were very much given the "I don't care much" treatment by this director who wants everyone to ooh and ahh over the exorbitant pre-show gimmicks and whatever the fuck the Emcee and Sally are doing, and to hell with the actual plot.
Everything from the direction to the marketing to the creative tone seems to scream out that no one on this creative team actually understands the message. The nightclub might be the titular setting, but it's a looming figure in the shadows. A seedy little joint in a back alley where everyone's just trying to survive. Vaudeville could be bawdy, certainly, but the staging and choreography here is vulgar and tiresome, and says to me that the creatives also have little to no knowledge of that artform either.
Cabaret is an inherently Jewish musical. The three original creatives (Joe Masteroff, John Kander, and Fred Ebb) were Jewish men who were all alive during WWII and old enough to understand the horrors happening around them and overseas. Director and producer Hal Prince was Jewish. Revival director Sam Mendes is Jewish. Both Joel Grey and Alan Cumming are Jewish and/or gay. Eddie Redmayne is the first major Emcee on Broadway (baring a few late-run replacements, in the other runs, I'm sure) who is neither. Rebecca Fracknell is not Jewish and beyond the fact that I just don't think she's a good director of musical theatre (which is an incredibly hard artform that differs from directing straight plays), she has no inherent understanding or trust of the rich material already in place. She chose instead to create spectacle without actual spectacle, and focus all the time and energy into the Emcee--a character who was never meant to be the protagonist. The charisma and iconic performances of past Emcees have elevated this role in all subsequent productions, yes, but always as a centrally Jewish (and subtextually queer) figure. By having that representation and interpretation, Cabaret remains a centrally Jewish musicals. By stripping this particular Emcee of that, we get a goyish nightmare puppet, not a man. Not a Jewish man hiding or highlighting his Jewishness. We get a re-centered gentile production dead behind the eyes.
Antisemitism in Weimar Germany takes on a featured role in what should be a starring turn. Fracknell clearly sees herself as Sally, and she's made it all about the Sally in a painfully white goyish feminist way (don't get me started on a rant about the "girlbossification" they're trying to make happen), but the VERY CLEAR intent of the material is that we should not want to be Sally. We should not be proud of being this willfully ignorant girl who doesn't care about the rise of fascism all around her, and actively states that it has nothing to do with her. We should be horrified at her complacency and shamed that we might have gone in feeling the same way. And Schneider says it, she says it right there in what's meant to be the scene, that Cliff and Sally can just run away when the going gets tough without a care in the world, but she can't. When a show takes a Jewish story, written by Jewish men, and turns it into a gentile funhouse carnival and refuses to acknowledge its Jewish-centered book characters and actors (notice how Bebe Neuwirth and Steven Skybell were almost entirely excluded from promo materials until late into the Award Season publicity) to instead prop up a white gentile man and a white gentile woman...well, that's just blatant Jewish erasure.
#cabaret#broadway#musical theatre#i've listened to several jewish friends and strangers (i like talking to people i sit with when i go see cabaret acts) with these critiques#edit: meant to say “and/or” Jewish and gay and didn't catch the omission so apologies

watched the new production of cabaret at a community theatre and it was. AWESOME.! i didnt like how they changed kit kat klub to club obviously but they msutve taken creative liberties at this theatre cuz they kept the klub. alhamdulila. i didnt actually KNOW that the new production changed the ending so the entire time i was really confused why the cabaret were nazis? dancing with swastikas, saying antisemitic shit. how were they gonna reveal that the emcee was jewish all along if he has a gun on herr schultz? and when that reveal never happened, i felt real life dread watching the stage cuz the ending is just soo awful to watch but i also felt a little bit of disappointment. cuz i liked that the sam mendes production had that reveal cuz you fell for the same "at least its not me" sentiment that everyone else had. u never believed the EMCEE could be sent away. and you realize youre just as complicit as the rest of them.
BUT. then, after the emcee shoots herr schultz and the stage went dark, they played trump speeches on the speakers (mirroring earlier, when intermission started and they played hitler speeches) and suddenly it all clicked. if the first production was about guilt, this one is about fear. cuz its not hypothetical anymore. its not "what WOULD you have done" its "what are you GOING to do." cuz we're living it right now. it all made sense and it made me SICK!!!!!!
