okay so the in the shadow of two gunmen flashbacks are really genuinely set up like a rom com. wow. that was crazy. heartfelt mouthed thank yous across a party. showing up in the pouring rain to whisk someone away. the most bizarre reaction to your friend getting engaged. abandoning your whole life because of the way he smiles. vague references to some concept you've built your relationship around. and don't get me started on josh! I'm here! we went to new hampshire, you came and got me. oh aaron sorkin I’ve got questions…

Y'know Josh really does have a lot of, like... Connections? In the office, compared to Sam. Like, there's Donna of course, and Leo, and in season one even Mandy. I guess you could say from season 2 Ainsley is more connected to Sam, but that's a newer relationship. And, y'know, Toby, but that's very professional. (And, uh, later in s2... Not going so great.)

It's just: Josh is easily the person he's the most personally close to in the west wing, right? Whereas Josh has a few other comparably close ones. Which presumably in retrospect is why he and Sam got less screentime together as the show went on. But it's an interesting dynamic, if possibly unintended in-universe.
