If you were truthful, you felt extremely out of place in a cowboy bar. The only reason that you were even there was because your friends knew that you had a thing for cowboys, and the only way you’d get one was to go to an actual cowboy bar. Although you had always gone with your friends to every single kind of party or club that they had the notion to go to, they told you you were on your own for this one. That’s how you ended up, alone, at a cowboy bar you’d never been to before, only visiting the town to take in a rodeo. So far, you hadn’t put yourself out there like you promised you would; it was just much more intimidating approaching these men like you thought. Boys raised on country and rodeos seemed to have a view on masculinity that didn’t involve being hit on by other men.

Suddenly, you’re pulled from your thoughts by the entire bar erupting into cheers and whistles. You have to sit up in the booth that you were currently lounging in, so you can see what’s going on. Part of you hopes that maybe a fight had broken out, it would add a little excitement to what was otherwise turning out to be a very uneventful evening. What you saw when you looked up, though, was not flying fists but the most handsome cowboy you’d ever seen in your life.

You’re staring, you know you are, but you can’t help it, especially when his friends start to chant his name, and you recognize it, it’s the name of the rider who was at the top of the leaderboard. You hadn’t gotten a look at him then— at least not his face but now you were, and then the unthinkable happened. He was looking right back at you.

It was just a split second, his eyes caught yours across the bar, and then he looked away, but to your surprise, he did a double-take and looked back, giving you a soft, shy smile. Far too shy for a champion bull rider.

That’s where it ended, that’s where it always ended. You had no reason to think that this time would be any different until most of the people in the bar had finally pulled their attention away from the man of the night. Just as you finished the last of your beer and decided to head home for the night, you saw him walking toward you.

“Figured you could use another beer,” Rhett smiles at you, lifting the bottle in his right hand toward you. “Looks like I’m just in time,” He nods toward the empty beer in your hand and then sets two new ones down on the table and sits without even asking.

“You are,” You can’t help but chuckle, grabbing the bottle. “I was just about to head out, actually.”

“Oh, you were, were you?” Rhett smirks lightly, “Well, I hope I can convince you to stay for this last beer.”

You hum softly, bringing the opening of your bottle to your lips. “Yeah, I think you could, I’m pretty easily convinced.”

“How easily?” Rhett asks, and his eyes sparkle even over the mouth of his own beer bottle that he was bringing to his lips.

“Let’s just say… I’ve got a thing for cowboys.”

That’s how both of you ended up in the bar bathroom that was dingy enough to rival a truck stop, your lips practically glued to Rhett’s and huffing air out of your nose whenever you remembered that you had to breathe.

“Wait I gotta um…” You pull back from him, still breathing embarrassingly heavy, soothing down your shirt. Your chest was flat now, but there was still another part of your body that you felt you needed to ‘warn’ him about before this goes any further. Rhett brings a hand up and runs it over his mouth. “What is it? You don’t wanna fuck in this bar bathroom?”

“No, I do, I definitely do,” You chuckle, happy that things still feel light and easy. “It’s just that um… well I’m transgender and I haven’t got bottom surgery yet so… I understand if you wanna stop this here.” It was a sentence that you had stated multiple times, so you fully expected everything to stop right then and there.

Flicking his tongue out over his lips, Rhett’s lips turn up slightly on one side, and his blue eyes track you up and down. “Now why in the world would I wanna stop, hm?”

You hadn’t realized how much you had been hoping to hear those words until you felt your body completely deflate out of relief. Instead of responding, you step forward and press your lips against his again.

You bring your own up, grabbing onto his forearm. “Wait, no… leave the hat on.” You can’t help but flush a little, biting at your swollen bottom lip.

Rhett gives a low chuckle, looking you up and down again. “I got a better idea.” He still removes his hat despite your protests, but instead of placing it on the sink behind him, he places it right on top of your head. “Hold on to this for me, will ya, Darlin’?”

The rumble in his voice makes your stomach tighten, and you answer by grinding against his denim-clad thigh with a soft whine.

“Such a needy boy, huh?” Rhett smirks. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of ya, I got exactly what you need.”

It happens quickly, Rhett is reaching in between your bodies and unclips his belt, popping the button and pulling his hard, leaking cock out of its confines. Hi Ally! Thanks so much for the request, and so sorry for taking a long time to complete it, I've been writing less frequently as of late. Thanks for your kind words and hope you like these headcanons I came up with. 💖💖 Sampo x fem!reader who works at Natasha's clinic Warnings: none, fluff, mostly sfw, g/n reader, no pronouns, no specific body parts mentioned

You’ve been with Natasha since she’s managed to open her clinic, with some age difference, Nat basically treated you like younger sister. It was nice to have someone looking out for you in the Underworld, so you did your best to help her with anything you could, basically becoming her apprentice as well.

When a weird self-confident but a tad smarmy guy showed up in the Underworld and assisted Natasha with providing some medicine from Overworld as well as some info and intel about what has been happening in Belobog, you didn’t pay a lot of attention to him.

It’s not until he started openly flirting with you, bringing small trinkets with him when coming to clinic to trade with Natasha. “To my precious customer’s precious person, free of charge” he’d say, offering you few flowers growing only in the Overworld, some intricate sweets you’ve never tasted, notebooks, postcards with Belobog views with some cheesy one-liners written inside them.

It all looked fairly innocent, and you didn’t seem interested, always making fun of Sampo’s manner of speech and antics, so Natasha could only roll her eyes at his antics and brush everything off, with you giggling on the backside.

You haven’t even noticed how Sampo’s visits became more and more frequent, him coming to hang out in the hospital even when Natasha was out just to chat you up. He’s been nothing but gallant and polite with you, even if a bit obnoxious, so you had no reason to reject his offers to walk you home when you ran errands, to just entertain him with an idle talk when he barged into clinic saying he’s terribly bored.

With Natasha and Seele always doting on you and nagging you about Sampo’s shady ways, you decided to keep your friendship low-key and offered him to meet somewhere outside clinic, to which Sampo wholeheartedly agreed with the biggest grin you’ve seen on his face.

You didn’t know it at the time, but that was how you basically went on a first date with him and how your more intimate relationship kick-started.

Even though it has been interesting to listen to Sampo’s overexaggerated stories about his adventures and heists, it has been even more nice when his tongue was busy with something (or rather someone) other than talking.

Kissing in the dark alleyways, giggling, and hiding in the clinic’s storage room, basically devouring each other and desperately grinding your bodies, while making sure Natasha or clinic’s patients cannot hear you, hiding from angry Seele who’s been chasing Sampo to chastise him for something he has done again, constantly patching up his wounds – it all became a part of your everyday routine.

Sometimes you still nagged him over the things he’s done that seemed too much for your standards, so Sampo begrudgingly agreed with you time and time again to repair the damage he's done to some people.

Natasha’s been fuming when she returned home one day a bit earlier and saw Sampo in your bedroom, him managing to say only “Wooops” with a shrug of his shoulders. She’s never expected this outcome, especially with Sampo’s lessened visits and flirting with you at the clinic lately. Sampo’s almost weaseled his way from under Natasha’s scrutiny, but it was mostly due to your assurance that you’re an adult person responsible for your own actions and you’ve got everything under control.

Pertemuan Pertama

Pertemuan pertama kami adalah karena konspirasi alam semesta yang menempatkan kami berada pada satu kelas. Kelas X-9. Di awal-awal semester, nampaknya kami tak terlalu dekat. Jujur, awalnya aku males sih melihat dirinya .. kombinasi antara seorang lelaki yang tak bisa futsal, pecinta K-Pop dan anime juga wajah yang tak ada garang-garangnya ngahahaha aku sih sudah skeptis untuk kenal dengannya lebih dekat. But somehow kita bisa menjadi dekat. Ah iya, aku ingat. Kita saling menemukan kesamaan saat kita mengobrol waktu itu. Inget gak wil? Kita teh dulu kan player game Point Blank dan Lost Saga. Aha! Iya dari situ rupanya. Itu menjadi langkah awal dari persahabatan kita.

Aku ingat betul, kamu mengajakku untuk bermain ke rumahmu. Kamu mengajakku untuk bermain game online tersebut di komputermu. Aku pun pergi ke rumahmu ketika hari libur. Pertama kali diri menginjakkan kaki di halaman rumahmu eh aku dibuat terkaget-kaget. Ini benda apa woooyyy???!!! Ada kaya kembang api di samping pintu depannya. Ah iya, dari luar rumahnya saja sudah terlihat banget sih kalau ini rumah punya orang cina ngahahaha gimana ga meyakinkan wong warna rumahnya kombinasi antara merah muda dan merah terang. Cina banget kan? Soalnya warga lokal kayanya tidak akan memilih warna-warna terang tadi sebagai warna dari rumahnya. Haha sotoy bet ini si Icad.

Masuk ke dalam rumahnya membuatku semakin yakin kalau dia memang cina murni bukan abal-abal. Ornamen-ornamen khas cina, lukisan khas cina juga ada mainan kucing yang tangannya gerak-gerak itu loh semua ada di rumahnya. Lalu, kulihat ibunya sedang membakar suatu kertas.

Aku tak tau mengapa dia meminta maaf, masalahnya kenapa saya harus protes dan terganggu dengan kegiatan yang anda lakukan wong kan ini rumah anda toh mas ya yang buat aturan anda bukan saya hahahahahaha.

Begitulah .. pertemuan pertama dengan dirinya, rumahnya juga ibunya. I never forget it.

Ini game apa wil?

Aku pun duduk disampingnya sambil melihat dia memainkan komputernya.

Rame teu? “ “ Rame pisan lah, ini game nya kaya DOTA tapi lebih rame lah pokoknya mah “ “ Coba atuh sok mainin “ Dia pun memainkannya. Aku tertawa kecil saat game tersebut sudah masuk ke homepage-nya. Pffft ini nickname dia apaan sih ga jelas, nick namenya adalah Chadelluchu. “ Anying ieu nick naon wil? “ “ Ini nick aing dulu dari SMP ngahahaha maapin alay “ “ aing ga masalah sih kalau chadel nya mah, tapi emang maneh lucu? “ sambil ku mencubit kedua pipinya yang chubby. HOEEEEEKKKK YA ENGGALAH ANYING IYA AJA AING NGELAKUIN GITUUU WKWK GETEK TEA. “ Nih kalau maneh mau cobain main pake akun urang “ “ boleh sok “ “ tapi jangan ranked match heeuh, normal match aja “ “ iyee iyee sini santai aje, aing pro dota dulu “

Aku pun mencobanya dan .. Woooow man! That game is really awesome! Permainan pertamaku dan aku langsung jatuh cinta dengan game itu. Game yang sampai tulisan ini aku publish masih menjadi game dengan player terbanyak di dunia. Maneh masih inget kan wil? Dulu ini masih server Oceania wkwk dulu ping normal tuh sekitaran 250ms lah. Game ini akan menjadi salah satu bagian penting dari persahabatan kami. Bagiku, ini bukan sekedar game. Ini adalah salah satu cara dari Allah s.w.t agar saya bisa berteman baik dengan anda.

Anjing Pertamaku

Kamu masih inget ini kan wil? Perjalanan ulin jauh kita pertama kali. Iya, pertama kali haha karena kita udah SMA kali ya, akhirnya orang tua kita mengizinkan kita untuk bermain yang agak jauh. Hari itu kita sekitar bersepuluh orang pergi bermain ke kawah kamojang. Entahlah saya lupa dimana lokasinya, kalau gak salah jalan menuju kawah ini adalah salah satu jalan alternatif kalau mau ke garut.

Aku ingat betul wil, waktu itu kita berdua menumpak motor yang sama .. motormu. Masih inget kan motor maneh dulu? Vega ZR yang penuh kenangan itu hahaha entah berapa kali kita pergi jauh dengan motor itu. Motor itu menjadi saksi bisu persahabatan kita.

Haha balik lagi ke cerita. Maneh inget ga sih? Pertama kalinya kita ngomong kasar wkwkwk. Iya kasar literally kasar. Ah, aku ingat betul wil. Let me tell you (re:all the readers) something, Icad yang dulu aduuuuh gak sama kaya yang sekarang wkwk selain fisik yang berubah nampaknya akhlak ku juga berubah. Dulu mah boro-boro marah, ngomong “ anjing “ aja ga berani. Takut hehe takut dimarahin bapakku yang galak. Iya, sepolos itu aku yang dulu wkwk makanya momen pertama aku ngomong kasar akan selalu aku ingat. Jadi, sebelum sampai ke kawah kamojang, ada jalan raya yang lega dan lengang sekali. Kita yang melihat jalan sepi kek gitu waduuuuh langsung dah tancap gas kebut-kebutan ugal-ugalan, biasalah anak muda. Saat kita sedang melaju kencang-kencangnya, aku yang dibonceng sahabatku melihat ada seekor Anjing lagi diem di pinggir jalan lumayan jauh di depan sana. Tiba-tiba terbesit lah sebuah ide.

“ Oh heeuh bener “

“ Kita teriak anjing yuk yang keras ke dia “

Motor melaju lagi dengan kencang, kami berdua tertawa puas. Kami merasakan sensasi yang menyenangkan di lisan kami. Sensasi kotor namun enak. Kotor memang tapi bukankah berani kotor itu baik? Hahaha. Aku masih tertawa sambil  melihat ke arah anjing tersebut yang nampaknya masih kebingungan dengan sikap kami yang aneh. Thanks wil, telah menemaniku mengucap kata kasar pertamaku.

Night Fury

Here it is, our beloved League of Legends team. Juara 1 se-Cianjur Raya. Iya, Cianjur. Jadi gini gini waduuuh ceritanya panjang banget yak wil wkwk. Jadi temen-temen dari Cianjur ini adalah teman-teman yang berkenalan lewat game nya itu sendiri. Iya, kami bertemu dengan mereka di dalam sebuah ranked match. Chatting di dalam sebuah match dan nyambung karena sama-sama orang sunda. Ah, semua berawal dari iseng saja eh tapi malah menjadi keluarga sampai sekarang.

Setelah match itu berakhir, a Rangga mengajak kami untuk bermain ke rumahnya di Cianjur.

“Sini main we ke Cianjur, deket lah Bandung-Cianjur mah .. Ini saya disini buka warnet jadi kadieu we urang main bareng di warnet hahaha”

Entah kesambet apa kita waktu dulu, kita mengiyakan ajakan a Rangga dan akhirnya berangkat dengan si Vega ZR. Bermodalkan alamat “ Jalan Aria Cikondang “ dan aplikasi Google Maps kita berdua berangkat kesana ba’da ashar. Bego emang, kita jadi harus melaui Jalan Padalarang sekitar jam 8 malam. Ngeri cuuuy, ya gelap ya menyebrang gunung dan juga truk-truk besar sedang beroperasi di jalan itu. Huft, alhamdulillahnya kita selamat sentosa.

Kami sampai di sana sekitar pukul 10 malam. Kami disambut dengan sangat baik di sana. Berkenalan langsung dengan teman-teman yang sebelumnya hanya tau nickname game nya saja. Menyenangkan, mereka baik sekali pada kami. Kami diperlakukan seperti seorang Raja hahaha sagala disuguhan. Akhirnya kami tahu mengapa nickname mereka memakai embel-embel NFR di depan. Ternyata nama warnet mereka adalah Night Fury. Katanya mereka begitu menyukai si Toothless dari seri How to Train Your Dragon. Ah, akhirnya aku tahu!

Setelah kunjungan pertama kami ke Cianjur, kami menjadi ketagihan untuk terus datang ke sana. Keramahan dan tentunya warnet untuk bermain League of Legends adalah alasan kami untuk terus datang ke sana. Nah, A Rangga ini dulu bekerja di Garena. Garena adalah publisher game LoL server Indonesia. A Rangga menjadi orang penting yang turut memajukan per LoL an di kota Cianjur. Suatu hari, A Rangga mengadakan turnamen “ Teemo Cup “ di Cianjur.

Teemo Cup adalah turnamen LoL tingkat regional. A Rangga yang mengadakan event ini otomatis tidak bisa ikut ke dalam tim yang berisikan minimal 5 orang ini. Akhirnya beliau mengajak kami untuk datang ke sana dan bermain di dalam tim.

“ Wil, kadieu deui maen teemo cup gantikeun urang .. ajak si Icad nyak bae keur cadangan we “ Kata a Rangga lewat Facebook

Kami pun memutuskan untuk berangkat lagi ke sana. Kami berangkat dari siang hari demi menghindari Jalan Padalarang di malam hari. Eh tapi eh tapiii takdir berkata lain. Sesaat kami sampai di alun-alun Cimahi. “ Ctaaaaaakkkk “ terdengar suara dari bawah motor. Aku yang sedang menyupir kebingungan.

“ Wil wil naha ieu di gas teh tapi teu maju “

Kami berhenti, mengecek suara keras yang kami dengan dari bawah motor tadi.

“ Ah anjir rante na putus cad “

Syiiiiitt~. Kami pun mendorongnya sambil harap-harap cemas semoga ada bengkel di dekat sana. Semua adalah kuasa Allah s.w.t, di hari itu semua bengkel yang kami temui tutup.

“ Wil kumaha yeuh? Mana geus ek maghrib deui “ keluh ku yang sudah lelah mendorong motor

“ Yaudah kita solat dulu we tuh di masjid agung “

Kami pun solat maghrib disana. Kami segera mencari bengkel lagi, kali aja masih ada yang buka. Huft, nihil tak ada satupun bengkel yang buka. Akhirnya kita pun I’tikaf numpang tidur di Masjid Agung. Edaaaan boooy~

Kita skip cerita sampai kita sudah sampai di Cianjur. Ternyata, turnamen “ Teemo Cup “ tidak dilaksanakan di warnet NFR. A Rangga memilih warnet lain yang lebih besar dikarenakan membludaknya pendaftar. Kami berenam pun berangkat menyusul a Rangga yang sudah sampai duluan di sana dari Pagi hari. Betapa terkejutnya kami saat sampai di sana. Peserta yang cukup banyak itu melihat kami berdua seakan alien yang akan menguasai Cianjur. Mereka berbisik sambil memandang kami berdua.

“ Hahahaha ieu pan barudak di dieu dibere nyaho bakal aya orang Bandung kadieu milu turnamen “

“ Enya mereka nyaho kalian ti Bandung berarti jago maen na kitu jadi we asa ningali bule hahahaha “

Benar saja, ketika kami berdua melewati gerombolan orang itu .. terdengar seseorang sedang mengobrol dengan temannya

“ Itu tuh nu ceuk a Rangga ti Bandung tea, anu jago tea gening pas ningali si a Rangga maen “

Aku tersenyum kecil. Aduuuh mereka ngomong apa sih kok bener banget. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA~

Kami pun masuk ke warnet tersebut. Kami bermain satu match sebelum turnamen dimulai. Aku duduk tiga kursi ke kiri dari kursi yang sahabatku duduki. Orang-orang masuk bergerombol. Aku berhusnudzon

“Wah pasti mereka mau lihat kita maen nih”

Ternyata prasangka ku salah. Mereka hanya ingin menonton sahabatku bermain. Aku? Tak ada satupun yang menontonku bermain. Nasib role nya support ya giniiii ga ada yang anggap~ wkwk

Akhirnya kami menang mudah di sana. Ah senangnya! Menjuarai turnamen game pertamaku meskipun aku cadangan~ Ngahahaha. Thanks wil, sudah menemaniku menjuarai turnamen pertamaku!

Tapi sorry ya wil, turnamen di Bandung aku juara 1 mmm sekitar 3 kali ada kali ya :p Ngahahahaha

Wil, sebelumnya aing minta maaf kalau ini dirasa sama maneh ga harus di publish tapi aing rasa ini gapapa di publish.

Jadi gini teman-teman, menurut penuturan sahabatku. Dia menjadi mu’alaf sekitar umur 7 atau 8 tahun lah ya. Alasannya sederhana, dia gamau diejekin sama temen-temennya yang muslim. Abong budak! Jadi kalau hari jum’at ini kan dia gak jumatan tuh sebelumnya nah temen-temennya tuh pada ngejekin dia karena dia ga jumatan. Menangislah dia dan mengadu kepada Ibunya.

Iya ceritanya kaya gitu. Asli. Hidayah emang bisa datang darimana aja dan salah satunya adalah ejekan dari teman~ Ngahahahaha. Dia pun tumbuh menjadi seorang muslim yang ta’at. Insyaallah.

Dulu saya sempat mengira bahwa dia adalah seorang non-muslim setelah aku melihat ritual-ritual yang dilakukan oleh ibundanya selama di rumah. Sampai akhirnya waktu itu, adzan berkumandang.

Dia bercerita kalau dia adalah turunan Cina, nama Cinanya kalau gak salah Lee So Hok ya wil? Dia dilahirkan dari sepasang orang tua yang agamanya berbeda. Ibunya yang turunan China menganut ajaran Buddha sedangkan Ayahnya yang asli Sumedang menganut ajaran Islam. Ayo kita bahas Ibunya!

Apa yang kalian bayangkan jika mendengar kata “ ibu-ibu “ ? Sein kiri belok ke kanan ? Tupperware hilang? Daster? No-no-noooo~ Apapun yang kalian bayangkan tentang ibu-ibu  tak satupun melekat pada Ibundanya Willy. Pokoknya keren cuuuy gaya ibunya, Unik! Dan terkadang bikin sobat aing geleng-geleng kepala, iya gak wil? Hahahaha.

China itu pelit? Awalnya saya berpikir seperti itu juga sampai akhirnya pemikiran itu terpatahkan oleh kebaikan yang maneh dan Ibumu berikan. Aku selalu dikasih makan cuy kalau main ke rumahnya dan emang aing gatau diri sih ini tiap ada jam kosong aing malah main ke rumahnya terus wkwk yaiyalah sampai Ibu maneh mikir “ Ini anak napa main ke sini mulu wil “ hahaha tapi aku membuktikan kan bahwa aku adalah sahabat dari anaknya yang baik hati dan rajin menabung~ Hahaha

Yaaa begitulah, unik sekali memang ibunya. Nyentrik, nyablak, lucu but I know it well wil .. Your mother love you so much. You are precious for her! Ah, I think you already know, right?

Aku sangat kagum dengan keteguhan dan keikhlasan hatinya. Disaat aku melihat Indonesia yang darurat toleransi, eh aku malah dikasih lihat oleh Allah s.w.t hubungan dua manusia yang berbeda namun saling tulus mencintai. Kasih sayang ibu dan anak yang tak peduli bagaimanapun keadaannya, mereka akan tetap terus mencinta.

Wil, aing belajar banyak dari maneh. Aing belajar tentang berbakti kepada orang tua dari maneh. Maneh yang mau disuruh jauh-jauh membeli dupa, maneh yang tak pernah berbicara kasar even maneh lagi dimarahin, maneh yang selalu mau nganter indung maneh ke Jakarta. Aing belajar banyak dari maneh wil .. aing belajar banyak.

Wil, believe me. I always pray for your willingness. Aku selalu berharap suatu hari cita-citamu terkabul. Aku melihat keinginan tulus dari seorang anak yang ingin hidup selamanya dengan ibunya hingga nanti di kehidupan kedua. When I saw your eye .. I couldn’t lie, you mean it.

Wil coba bandingkan diri maneh yang dulu pertama kenal aing sama maneh sekarang. Kalau maneh sadar, maneh banyak berubah. Maneh yang dulu polos sekali sekarang tidak lagi. Maneh tumbuh menjadi lelaki dewasa yang penuh tanggung jawab. Gatau lah, aing selalu kagum sama orang China wkwk orangnya ulet, kerja keras dan terus mau belajar. Kalau mau dibandingin duh aduuuh dulu aku ranking 1 cuy di kelas. Ente? Ranking 10 jauh sekali di bawah saya. Tapi nilai tidaklah menentukan kesuksesan seseorang. Kerja keras, ulet, terus belajar membuat anda terus maju meski tak berlari. Aing iri wil ningali maneh. Maneh terus berubah menjadi lebih baik. Ari aing? Kieu we wil berjalan mundur. Back in 2007 I wrote a story about a guy standing in line at an airport. Not much actually happened; he just shuffled along with everyone else, reflecting on the security check awaiting him (and his fellow passengers) prior to boarding. Eventually he reached the head of the queue, passed through the scanner, and continued on his way. That was pretty much it.

Except the scanner wasn’t an X-ray or a metal detector: it was a mind-reader that detected nefarious intent. The protagonist was a latent pedophile whose urges showed up bright and clear on the machine, even though he had never acted on them. “The Eyes of God” asks whether you are better defined by the acts you commit or those you merely contemplate; it explores the obvious privacy issues of a society in which the state can read minds. The technology it describes is inspired by a real patent filed by Sony a few years ago; even so, I thought we’d have at least couple more decades to come to grips with such questions.

I certainly didn’t think they’d be developing a similar system by 2015.

Yet here we are: a technology which, while not yet ready for prime time, is sufficiently far along for the American University Law Review to publish a paperi exploring its legal implications. FAST (Future Attribute Screening Technology) is a system “currently designed for deployment at airports” which “can read minds . . . employ[ing] a variety of sensor suites to scan a person’s vital signs, and based on those readings, to determine whether the scanned person has ‘malintent’—the intent to commit a crime.”

The envisioned system doesn’t actually read minds so much as make inferences about them, based on physiological and behavioral cues. It reads heart rate and skin temperature, tracks breathing and eye motion and changes in your voice. If you’re a woman, it sniffs out where you are in your ovulation cycle. It sees your unborn child and your heart condition—and once it’s looked through you along a hundred axes, it decides whether you have a guilty mind. If it think you do, you end up in the little white room for enhanced interrogation.

Of course, feelings of guilt don’t necessarily mean you plan on committing a terrorist act. Maybe you’re only cheating on your spouse; maybe you feel bad about stealing a box of paper clips from work. Maybe you’re not feeling guilty at all; maybe you’re just idly fantasizing about breaking the fucking kneecaps of those arrogant Customs bastards who get off on making everyone’s life miserable. Maybe you just have a touch of Asperger’s, or are a bit breathless from running to catch your flight—but all FAST sees is elevated breathing and a suspicious refusal to make eye contact.

Guilty minds, angry minds, fantasizing minds: the body betrays them all in similar ways, and once that flag goes up you’re a Person of Interest. Most of the AULR article explores the Constitutional ramifications of this technology in the US, scenarios in which FAST would pass legal muster and those in which it would violate the 4th Amendment—and while that’s what you’d expect in a legal commentary, I find such concerns almost irrelevant. If our rulers want to deploy the tech, they will. If deployment would be illegal they’ll either change the law or break it, whichever’s most convenient. The question is not whether the technology will be deployed. The question is how badly it will fuck us up once it has been.

Let’s talk about failure rates.

If someone tells you that a test with a 99% accuracy rate has flagged someone as a terrorist, what are the odds that the test is wrong? You might say 1%; after all, the system’s 99% accurate, right? The problem is, probabilities compound with sample size—so in an airport like San Francisco’s (which handles 45 million people a year), a 99% accuracy rate means that over 1,200 people will be flagged as potential terrorists every day, even if no actual terrorists pass through the facility. It means that even if a different terrorist actually does try to sneak through that one airport every day, the odds of someone being innocent even though they’ve been flagged are—wait for it—over 99%.

The latest numbers we have on FAST’s accuracy gave it a score of 78-80%, and those (unverified) estimates came from the same guys who were actually building the system—a system, need I remind you, designed to collect intimate and comprehensive physiological data from millions of people on a daily basis.

The good news is, the most egregious abuses might be limited to people crossing into the US. In my experience, border guards in every one of the twenty-odd countries I’ve visited are much nicer than they are in ’Murrica, and this isn’t just my own irascible bias: according to an independent survey commissioned by the travel industry on border-crossing experiences, US border guards are the world’s biggest assholes by a 2 to 1 margin.

Which is why I wonder if, in North America at least, FAST might actually be a good thing—or at least, a better thing than what’s currently in place. FAST may be imperfect, but presumably it’s not explicitly programmed to flag you just because you have dark skin. It won’t decide to shit on you because it’s in a bad mood, or because it thinks you look like a liberal. It may be paranoid and it may be mostly wrong, but at least it’ll be paranoid and wrong about everyone equally.

Certainly FAST might still embody a kind of emergent prejudice. Poor people might be especially nervous about flying simply because they don’t do it very often, for example; FAST might tag their sweaty palms as suspicious, while allowing the rich sociopaths to sail through unmolested into Business Class. Voila: instant class discrimination. If it incorporates face recognition, it may well manifest the All Blacks Look Alike To Me bias notorious in such tech. But such artifacts can be weeded out, if you’re willing to put in the effort. (Stop training your face-recognition tech on pictures from your pasty-white Silicon Valley high school yearbook, for starters.)  I suspect the effort required would be significantly less than that required to purge a human of the same bigotry.

Indeed, given the prejudice and stupidity on such prominent display from so many so-called authority figures, outsourcing at least some of their decisions seems like a no-brainer. Don’t let them choose who to pick on, let the machine make that call; it may be inaccurate, but at least it’s unbiased.

Given how bad things already are over here, maybe even something as imperfect as FAST would be a step in the right direction.

Alone, sendirian. Ada suatu qoutes dari anime yang pernah aku tonton, ya sebenarnya anime ini jadi favoritku, jadi quotesnya gini.

Iyalah siapa juga yang amu sendirian, jalan sendirian pas mau ke kantin, jalan sendirian di koridor kampus, sendirian nongkrong di indomaret point, nongkrong sendirian di Kfc. Awkward. Tapi sebagian orang ada juga yang kayak gitu, lebih nyaman sendirian, a looner is a looner. Aslinya aku juga lebih suka menyendiri, tapi dari sekala 100%, aku 50% lebih suka sendiri.

Nggak enak kan sendirian itu, pegennya ke mana-mana bareng temen atau pacar gitu kan, tapi jangan pacar orang ya. Nha karena hal semacam itu lah akhirnya jadi kebiasaan deh. Maunya ikutan temen terus. Gandengan, lengket ngak mau pisah. Sampe-sampe mutusin tempat sekolah, kampus, tempat kerjaan bahkan nikah juga maunya barengan. Heheh

Rasanya aneh kalau misalnya ngak barengan temen, ada yang kurang. Ah padahal itu cuma doktrin aja, kita bakalan ngerasa kehilangan kebersamaan bersama teman kita kalau misalnya udah ngak barengan lagi, jelas banget lah.Terus ngerasa khwatir kalo aja di lingkungan baru nggak ada yang kita kenal, takut nggak menyesuaikan, takut terasingkan. Nyatanya, soal adaptasi itu hanyalah masalah waktu. IKuta-ikutan temen itu juga nggak bagus. Ada nih temen aku dari lahir, dia itu dulu lengket sama aku, dari TK,SD,SMP Kita barengan terus. AKu ngiranya aku bakalan tetep sama-sama terus sama ini bocah, eh tapi suatu hari kebencian itu datang, entah itu apa aku bingung , seolah aku ngerasa dia selangkah lebih maju dari aku, dia mulai melakukan hal-hal yang dia anggap benar, nggak ragu buat jalan sendiri meski di belakangnya banyak omongan yang nggak enak soal dia, termasuk aku. Dia pernah bilang juga sama aku “aku nggak akan jadi seperti sekarang ini jika aku ikut-ikutan teman”. Iya kamu benar, kalau saja dia ikutan teman dia nggak akan sekolah di sampoerna akademi.

Ikutan temen , itu aku banget, aku sukanya ikutan temen. Aku silent reader, aku nggak selugas itu ngomong di depan umum.

Pas milih sekolah aku juga ikutan temen, maksudtnya kan enak kalo ada temen yang aku kenal. Kemudian aku akan berpikir “Ah, nggak apa-apa toh ada temennya”.

Begitu seterusnya. Seterusnya. Tempat les, tempat magang, ada aja semua. Seringnya ikutan. Lalu pertanyaanya adalah kapan aku akan berhenti ikutan teman ? kapan aku akan melakukan segala hal tanpa ragu ? kapan akan berani melangkah sendiri tanpa menunggu seseorang ?

Sekarang mungkin waktunya, jangan ikut-ikutan teman lagi.

Petunjuk Jalan & Transportasi Umum di Korea Selatan (Seoul, Busan, Jinhae & Jeju)

Buat solo traveler kayak gue, mau gak mau pasti bergantungnya sama transportasi umum. Untungnya sistem subway di Seoul itu bagus banget. Di Busan pun subway-nya udah menjangkau ke seluruh bagian. Meski ada yang harus sambung lagi pake village bus atau semacem angkot lah kalo di Indonesia.

Bahkan di Jeju Island yang semacam Bali gitu, gue naik bus ke mana-mana. Iya lah.. bisa miskin kalau naik taksi. Tempat wisatanya jauh-jauh dari kota Jeju.. bisa sampe 40 km-an. Bisa miskin dan dipelototin ahjussi drivernya.. Mau sewa mobil juga gak mungkin, kecuali gue anak horangkayah.

Oke, jadi bagi yang kemarin mungkin udah sempet baca post pertama gue tentang Itinerary Liburan 11 Hari ke Korea Saat Musim Semi, tentunya bertanya-tanya juga.. Ini si Metta ngasih itinerary, tapi jalan menuju ke sananya gimana? Nah ini gue kasih lengkap petunjuk jalan sama transportasi umumnya.

Beda ama yg kalian dapetin kalo hasil googling atau nyari di website tourism-nya Korea, gue kasih penjabaran lengkap. Biasa kan cuma tulisannya “turun di stasiun X, keluar di exit Z.” Trus, dari exit situ kemana? LOL... I know what chu feeling really well.

Selama di Korea, gue bisa terbantu naik turun bus dengan mudah karena bisa baca Hangul (huruf Korea) dan ngomong bahasa Korea. Bagi kalian mungkin akan agak kesulitan karena petunjuk bus dalam bahasa Korea semua. Supir bus di Busan dan Jeju juga relatif gak bisa bahasa Inggris.

Kalau di Jeju, naik bus antar kota (kayak mau ke Seongsan Ilchulbong dll), harus sebutin dulu tujuan kalian ke supirnya. Nanti dia itung tarifnya, baru kalian tap kartu T-Money di mesin reader. Jadi bukan kayak bus dalam kota yang jauh dekat sama aja.
