He may have not shown any signs of fatigue, yet Inosuke passed out the moment his head hit the floor. This environment was familiar, and safer than any other sleeping spot he could have chosen, the ideal cocktail for a restful, deep slumber.

He didn't stir with the sunrise, as was his habit. His body was finally processing the struggles of the last two days, from when he had fallen into that well, searched all around that impossibly crowded human city, and come back to his home to finish the fight he had started a day prior. Clawed hands idly scratched at his chest, where his wounds used to be.

Not even the solid kick to his frame was enough to entirely rouse him awake. It wasn't until she gently shook him that Inosuke emerged, lips clicking and eyelids slowly blinking.

"What're you doing, Saruko... I'm sleeping..." His head lolled back to the ground for a second, before her second round of questions had him protest a little more vehemently.

"I'm not sick! I just slept there to keep the yokai outta your room! Though the grandma said that yokai can't come in here anyway... Not unless she allows them."

He leapt into a crouch, hands set on the ground, head snapping let and rap to observe their surroundings. No sign of the grandma yet.

"Okay. We gotta find out where breakfast is happening." For all his ignorance, he seemed to have memorized human eating schedules to perfection. "Let's get go–"

He stood up and spun on his heels, only to find the old lady standing right behind him.

"Good morning, Inosuke-san, Haruko-san." A deep bow. "Breakfast is served in the dining hall. If you would please follow me..."

Haruko slept tight and peacefully until the early morning came, and the gentle light woke her up. When she stood up, she glanced around, lost, taking a moment to remember where she was and why. Right, the old lady's mansion. The room was empty, so Inosuke probably left to go to bed at some point. She felt guilty she hadn't even bid him goodnight, she really was exhausted.

She stood up with a yawn, streched with a long sigh, and fixed the yukata belt which had loosened over the night. She headed to the door, sliding the panel open and stepping out to go fetch Inosuke... When her foot tripped on a large shape and she fell face-down on the floor, letting out a loud grunt.

"What the..." She rolled on her back, massaging her nose with a groan. When she focussed the figure at her feet, she blinked, baffled.

"Inosuke??"

She knelt by the boy and gently shook his shape, a hint of concern rising in her chest. "Inosuke? Hey! Are you okay, did I hurt you??" She asked, worried. "Are you sick?! Why did you fall asleep here on the floor in the corridor, what happened?!"

Eighteen years ago, I was in the middle of Grad School Hell, in my last year of my three-year Master's program -- which is why my first contribution didn't happen Special Issue #1, which happened nearly a full year later. I was around for all the buzz of putting it together and seeing other people cluster aroud! But I didn't really have a chance to sit down and read more anything until the time Issue 3 came out.

Therefore, I don't really remember which SSBB story I read first, because it was a bit of a blur. I did, however, go back to check which one I commented on first, and that was Lunch Money by Tsukizubon Saruko, because of course it was, because at that point we would have been dating for almost a full year. (Context: We celebrated our fourteenth wedding anniversary this past March.)

Early SSBB issues are definitely a trip. They've got a whole different aesthetic from the current ones -- and I don't mean that in a bad way! Things just shifted over time, changing along with the interests of contributors and readers alike. I know there were a lot of people at the time who were vocally, sometimes very nastily upset about this shift, which, you know, I get. But I don't think we would've made it this long trying to keep strict adherence to the original vision -- which, in case you've never seen it, was articulated like this:

Shousetsu Bang*Bang is a webzine for original gay fiction/boy's love oneshot stories, intended as an online, English-language text equivalent of one of those All Yomikiri Bimonthly Summer Special 100 Extra Pages!! manga phonebooks where every story is about the torrid romance of an ordinary schoolboy and his soccer club captain - or a yakuza boss and his faithful lieutenant - or the prince of an exotic desert country and the emerald-eyed winged youth he rescues from the sawtoothed sand monsters of G'or, self-contained in 30 pages and heartwarmingly predictable. Our policy is to welcome all comers, from the most flippant bit of cliché to the greatest of literary works... as long as they have fellas in love in them.

It was a great starting point! What SSBB is now, though, speaks to different needs and interests. In particular, broadening issues from strictly m/m to queer pandemonium has brought in a new and exciting bunch of contributors and readers alike. And these people are the ones who keep coming back, issue after issue, to make this whole thing work. Power to the people who show up.

I'm surely biased, but I think that SSBB is something special: a place to show off original work, regardless of your skill or confidence level, no matter how melodramatic or self-indulgent it gets, to an appreciative audience. Heaven knows I wouldn't have produced 1/100th of the writing I have without it, and neither would have a lot of other people I know. Eighteen years is a long time to keep an all-volunteer, all-free, zero-budget project going. I'm proud of us.

Many thanks to everyone who's contributed, commented, and shared our links and posts on social media. It's not easy keeping this whole thing going, and we appreciate every bit of love we can get.

while I was translating the info on the new hamefura game, at the part that says “cannot be renamed”, google translate read the characters incorrectly and it came out as “Mugi Sarako” (that I mentally corrected as Mugi Saruko) which caught me off guard because I thought they were gonna reveal her old name gjsdgf Mugi Saruko would have been a very cute name (as well as accurate bc yknow “Saru” equals monkey, which is past-Katarina’s old nickname. it checks out basically)

I guess a tl;dr is that while i was thinking about an au for my yumeship and ended up having a really cool concept for the universe.

I really like the concept bc its like! I had A different story i wanted to make with a similar premise but idk how to work out the little details, so i left it alone but my brainrotting actually made the concept really good now and im just in awe at myself!

Okay so i was brain rotting as usual about jigen lol

And a long while back i was inspired by a kdrama my parents were watching on netflix about grim reapers and i really liked the concept of it! Like it was really cool so i made this au where my yume oc, i call them saruko but their name is lum siuhei, is a shinigami who happened to be collecting the souls of a shootout and jigen, the human who lived through that but injured, being able to see them. Saruko is surprised bc like there’s only certain people that CAN see them which is well— it is a bad thing.

That’s how they first met each other! And well they keep bumping into each other afterwards because they kept getting assigned wherever jigen is at. The two sorta just become like friends at one point and sorta got to know each other more.

Saru felt like smth about him was familiar but didnt want to jump to conclusions or look further into it. Jigen did kind of wonder why he could see them. Its not like he could see ghosts or anything before and if he did, he likely forgot or something.

They followed jigen around for years till he met lupin and stopped doing as much dirty work so he eventually saw saruko less too but sometimes they’ll meet up and chat for a bit.

There is the dramatic plot where the lupin crew got wrapped up into underworld shenanigans, partially due to the fact that lupin has a penchant for this sorta wild stuff, fujiko being part succubus, goemon possessing some strong 6th sense despite not being able to physically see ghosts, and jigen being able to see saruko.

So saruko was basically smth like a god. Well in this case, even evil spirits are gods of some sort. But saruko was actually a god of high rank. In this setting there’s basically a ruling system in heaven so saruko works under a god. The god was basically the god who made the 12 zodiac. So saruko is basically one of the zodiac members!

The title can get passed down as even gods can die or can choose to die/retire so saruko gained the title of the monkey guardian some hundreds of years ago (now u know why i call them saruko lol). This is basically in line with their original lore which i never talked about here but one day i might!

At one point, saruko went down to the mortal realm to do something and somehow ended up falling in love with someone. Sadly though, through a very tragic incident, they killed their lover. Killing someone is considered a felony as these gods arent supposed to harm anyone, but as it was a mortal, the punishment was not as severe as if they killed someone else with divine/godly power.

So as punishment, they were stripped of their powers (well more like part of it was sealed in them and the other part they placed elsewhere) and was banished to the underworld to learn how to “appreciate” mortal souls.

Fast forward till present day and that’s that! However, this all happened because someone caused it to happen!

This person, who was also a god/divine being, really wanted power to rule over the heaven and initially wanted to goad saruko into harming him so he can take their power for himself and crushing them with the iron clad rules of the heavenly realm, as trying to harm another god is a felony punishable by death.

Just then their lover who happened to be nearby jumped in to stop saruko from harming the bad guy. Despite it resulting in his death.

Perhaps it was because of his intervention that saruko didnt get such a harsh punishment.

However, what happened to the lover? He was reincarnated several times, funnily enough trying to look for his lover. The first handful of times, he didnt approach it properly and also skipped out on drinking that memory wiping tea so he retained a lot of his past memories but still couldnt find saruko. So he took one final bet the right way, and he was reincarnated into someone we all know. :)

Saruko had only worked in the field so overseeing souls receiving judgement or punishment in hell was not something they would be having contact with often, hence why they hilariously missed each other for a couple hundred years.

Saruko’s goal was to find the guy who did this to them and kill them, because it didnt matter to them anymore. Their lover is dead and if they(he) got reincarnated, they want them (him) to live a new life.

The bad guy was keeping tabs on several people for years because of his grand master plan! He managed to trap most of the 12 zodiac guardians into a gourd (look im very chinese) but was missing saruko’s. So he sought out to get them and pretty much used the lupin gang to do so.

At their final meet up (basically everyone convening at one location), all secrets are revealed. Jigen finally learns what happened to saruko after all these years and that his past life was their lover. Made sense why he could see saruko in the first place, saruko sorta had a feeling he mightve been their lover but decided to let him life his life. Lupin actually had a key to victory that the bad guy needed. Goemon was there because he may have gotten a lil close to one of saruko’s friends (the tiger guardian) and wanted to save them.

Saruko does a cool super saiyan move (its called a heavenly equip) and got most of their divine powers back, but very limited because they can only break the seal placed on them and summon their weapon (basically the staff the monkey king used as he’s… technically their ancestor lol) and cant get the other part that was separated from them. Told lupin to steal the gourd somehow while they stall the bad guy because the bad guy also did this thing where he split his soul up into pieces so if one part fails the other can pick up the slack and so he’s technically weaker than normal but its like a god v god battle so humans cant really do much. They put a magical spell on one of jigen’s bullets that can basically almost kill a god, if not bind their soul. Humans can challenge god but gods cant do the same without consequence.

Then skipping all the details (i skipped a LOT of details already actually lol), they win the battle! BUT! Saruko gets injured in the process bc the bad guy was all: if im gonna die, i’ll drag someone down with me!

But they recover in about a month or so thanks to the other zodiacs help. And ya kno, the 12 zodiac guardians invited lupin’s crew to visit and thank them. Its very rare for humans to even go up there but they all stopped someone they were trying to catch for years so yeah! Time to celebrate!

Well the guys never really did care that much about rewards that werent monetary, but they did want to see if saruko was doing alright after all that. Esp because well jigen and saruko needed to talk to each other likewise.

while i never went into detail about the romantic aspect of it, it was slowly brewing after all the times theyve met with each other! Saruko was prolly someone who was outwardly not his type (they dont look that bad tho) but their personality was defs smth he fancied. He could never really put a finger on why he felt an attraction to them until the past life reveal which made everything click together. Saruko does admit that jigen really isnt their type but after spending some time with him, grew to like him and was very like “oh no, thats not good”.

And yes they both confess and they’re technically together lol

But yeah uh,,, see what i really liked about this was the setting tho.

Kinda like how different religions/cultures have slightly different heavens and underworlds/afterlife so its like they all exist but in varying degrees and p much in the same way we have different countries and nations.

So at least in my version of all this stuff, gods can officially pass their title down to someone else. If that god dies before finding one, they do get “reincarnated” if a lot of ppl believe in that god (a lil like noragami for this second bit). But, gods dont truly die. Their soul gets split up and go places or they return to the spirit of origin (or whatever creation god is in cn folklore bc i havent googled names yet). Only the creation gods can destroy their souls entirely but contacting them is very troublesome so its like the ultimate form of punishment should they have to do that.

So yea, the title of “monkey zodiac” is passed down. And hilariously, their ancestor is in fact sun wukong. He’s still alive bc he cant die easily anyways but he doesnt give a shit about what goes on anymore after he retired and gave the title to his nephew or somebody.

I did envision the underworld to be a little like hozuki no reitetsu where its pretty organized with towns and all that. The setting a little bit too like that! Like different gods or other religions existing and all that! The only thing is that its more modern and not as old fashioned, but not too modern where it looks like an office building.

And so! yes, gods do follow a lot of rules. This is to ensure the balance of the world and to make sure no one is going to go on a power trip bc usually horrible things in the mortal realm when that happens. Its pretty easy to abuse ur power when u have a lot of it after all lol

So to clarify with the soul splitting thing. What happened at the climax to the whole plot i had there was because lupin stole a cursed gem which had the final piece of the bad guy’s soul in it. Saruko just took it from lupin while he went off trying to steal that gourd. At one point, after lupin stole the gourd, saru binded the bad guy’s movements and told jigen to shoot him. Bad guy retaliates and pulled saruko who had to be close to him in other to restrain his movements to be a meat shield. Jigen hesitates for a moment then saruko was like “dont worry about me, i dont die easily anyways! Im a god after all!” He shoots and it hits— the gem that they took from lupin which they put on their chest under their shirt.

Theoretically speaking, since the soul is split into parts and a “main” body still exists, it’s possible to harm the main body as they’re all connected. As a part of his soul is in the gem and that magic bullet hit the gem, it basically dealt really strong dmg to him directly to his soul which is one of the most lethal type of damage to deal to a god and hard to recover from if you live.

Of course he tried to turn tables it but saruko knowing he’d do that, stood in to protect everyone else from getting hurt!

And uh yeah’ i need to sleep now so this is all ill talk about for now!! I hope u enjoyed my brainrot!!

The elements are water (controlled by Inoshishiko and Nezumiko), wood (controlled by Torako and Usagiko), fire (controlled by Hebiko and Umako), metal (controlled by Saruko and Toriko), wind (controlled by Ushiko and Inuko), and earth (controlled by Tatsuko and Hitsujiko).
